CASTROL-BACKED FPR BACK IN THE WINNER’S CIRCLE Castrol-backed Ford Performance Racing are back in the winners circle after Mark Winterbottom took Race 9 victory in the V8 Supercars Championship at the Winton 400. Winterbottom’s faultless drive sees the Ford factory man move up to second in the drivers’ standings with his Pepsi Max Crew FPR team third in the teams’ championship. “That was awesome. The tyres were a bit different in every stint but my Pepsi Max Ford was so hooked up I was strong all day,” said Winterbottom. At the end I just managed the gap and it is a really good result for us. It was nice to enjoy the closing laps with such a big lead and it was great to share such an important home win with all the fans. To

get a win with my new engineer Grant (McPherson) is a big confidence boost and this weekend we worked really closely and this success will provide great confidence throughout the team and pays everyone back for their hard work.” The FPR team enjoyed its strongest race overall with stable-mate David Reynolds and Chaz Mostert finishing fifth and sixth Reynolds gaining five places, Chaz nine from their original grid slots. Chaz’s performance was particularly impressive as he matched Winterbottoms pace for much of the race as he passed many of the key title challengers on Sunday. Castrol EDGE-oiled Supercheap Auto Racing driver Tim Slade showed his class at Winton on Sunday, driving brilliantly to take his first podium result since Sydney 2012. Slade, who started Race 9 from the fourth row on the grid, was happy with the podium result – especially given his return this year to the team with which he made his maingame debut in 2009. “It’s an awesome feeling to be back up on the podium,” said Slade. We’ve been rolling along with OK results in the top10, but it’s a lot to learn for me to have a

new car, new team, and new engineer. There’s a lot to learn as far as what I want from the car and the changes that you make to the car to get that. It takes a little while, and it took pretty much the best part of the weekend to get that. So it’s nice to finally get up on the podium and enjoy it.” Castrol-backed Norton Nissan drivers Michael Caruso and James Moffat finished the Winton V8 Supercars event with a double top 10 result. Caruso and Moffat finished 8th and 9th respectively, banking them valuable championship points after an up and down day on Saturday. Round 4 of the V8 Supercars Championship takes crews across the Tasman for the ITM 500 Auckland at Pukekohe Raceway - April 25-27.

CASTROL EDGE-OILED VW WINS IN PORTUGAL Sebastien Ogier and his Castrol EDGEoiled Volkswagen Polo R WRC has swept to victory at the Rally de Portugal in emphatic style winning the Power Stage to take maximum points. After trailing on the opening leg, Ogier put the hammer down on the second day and through the final leg’s stages he was untouchable. The Volkswagen driver’s final margin of victory over Mikko Hirvonen in another Castrol EDGE-oiled World Rally Car was 43.2 seconds with Mads Ostberg (Citroen DS3) a further 29.2 seconds further back. “So happy, really a great weekend and

Portuguese Rally is the perfect place for us,” said Ogier after he finished the final stage. It’s my fourth victory here and it was not an easy one with Mikko putting on plenty of pressure on the first two days and was really fast. In the end another victory and taking the Power Stage is perfect.” Robert Kubica, Elfyn Evans and Kris Meeke all crashed during the opening leg of the event, but perhaps the most notable was Jari-Matti Latvala who rolled out of contention having kept his VW team-mate Ogier honest before his mishap. The third Castrol-backed VW driver Andreas Mikkelsen grabbed fourth

when he emphatically beat Henning Solberg on the penultimate stage of the event. After rolling on the opening leg Ogier’s VW team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala took second on the Power Stage with Ostberg third. Australia’s Molly Taylor completed the JWRC in seventh position after battling back from a tough second day with punctures. She was also eighth in WRC3 aboard her Citroen with mother Coral alongside.

CASTROL BACKED HIGHT WINS 4-WIDE NATIONALS Castrol-backed John Force Racing driver Robert Hight has claimed his second win of the season and becomes the first driver to record two 4-wide Nationals victories in a Funny Car at the zMAX Dragway at the 5th annual FourWide NHRA Nationals. He defeated ‘the boss’ John Force, who came home second with Alexis DeJoria and Tim Wilkerson rounding out the finishers. This was the twelfth race in a row that John Force Racing has had a Funny Car in the final round going back to the U.S. Nationals last season. “The whole field is tough. You look at it top to bottom. Anybody can win one of these races. There are a lot of great cars out there. Kalitta (Racing) is running great. Schumacher (Racing) will be there. Wilkerson is running well. It is all tough,” said Hight. “If you let up

just a little bit you don’t take everybody seriously you are going to be on the trailer. We took the points lead over in Las Vegas. We don’t want to give it up. I didn’t want to have to wait between here and Houston thinking about getting the points lead back. I want to go to Houston knowing we still have the points lead.” Despite having the best reaction time of all the other final quad competitors, John Force and his Castrol GTX Mustang came up just little short of winning his second NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. “If it was just about the points, I’d feel real good as we moved up one and two but it’s about winning. I don’t like to lose to anybody but if I’m going to, I’d rather lose to a teammate who works just as hard as me and that’s Robert Hight,” said John Force. Brittany Forces chances of winning her first NHRA Top Fuel trophy evaporated in the second round of eliminations as her Castrol EDGE Top Fuel Dragster smoked the tires at the hit of the throttle. Despite having her best backto-back qualifying performances, she still came up short on race day. Regardless, the 2013 NHRA Rookie of the Year remains upbeat and positive.

STRENGTH TO PERFORM

“I’m still very proud of my Castrol EDGE team. To come out here to Charlotte and qualify number five at the fourwide is a big deal,” said Brittany Force. “That’s what we tried to do all of last year and we’ve improved. I’m also up against some tough guys, it’s not an easy group of racers so again, to go out and qualify number five at this race with these conditions and against some great teams is a big deal.” The next round of the Mello Yello Series takes crews to the 27th running of the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals, Houston, TX - April 25-27.

CASTROL-BACKED ROBINSON WINS AT ARCHERFIELD Castrol-backed Mark Robinson has won the V8 Dirt Modifieds race at the Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway. The V8 Dirt Modifieds were a popular category with the crowd and the starstudded field made for some exciting racing. Former Australian champions Robinson and Andrew Pezzutti were wheel-towheel for the lead in the feature race before the fifth and final restart; caused when Pezzutti ran out of room (and brakes) off turn two and slammed into the wall with 13-to-go.

Robinson went on to win ahead of current Australian champion David Clark who had clawed through from mid pack after a DNF in the heats. “That was a tough race up there in QLD,” said Robinson. “We had brake fade all feature so we were lucky to hang on for win!” Ray Klarich put in another strong drive but it was Kevin Britten who had the goods to round out the podium. The pair providing plenty of thrills for the fans. Barry Ashen won the Sportsman trophy within the division.

CASTROL-BACKED BRAYS RETURN TO CALDER PARK IN STYLE Castrol-backed Team Bray Racing has enjoyed a walk down memory lane and a semi-final appearance at the weekend thanks to the return of Top Doorslammer racing to Victoria’s Calder Park Raceway. On-track across Friday 4 and Saturday 5 April, Victor and Ben Bray were part of a 13 strong Top Doorslammer field for the Southern Nationals event which despite being dogged by poor weather successfully saw group one drag racing return to the venue for the first time in 13 years. “It had been a long time since we had been able to compete in ANDRA Top Doorslammer at Calder Park Raceway , it was really amazing to see the

category return to the venue,” said six-time back-to-back ANDRA Top Doorslammer champion Victor Bray. “While the results might not have fallen our way at the weekend, just to see the realisation of the return of ANDRA Top Doorslammer action to Calder Park was very pleasing for Team Bray, we have a lot of great memories here.” The racing at Calder Park Raceway was conducted over the 1000 foot distance with Victor and Ben sitting third and fourth following qualifying with just 1000th of a second between them. Qualifying was concluded on Saturday after Friday evening’s final session was rescheduled to race day due to wet weather.

For the first round Victor Bray faced off against Grant O’Rourke, with a hole shot to the ex-pat West Australian seeing Victor left to watch his son Ben’s semi-final appearance from the sidelines. Soon after, ANDRA officials

made the decision to abandon the event prior to the running of the finale as dropping temperatures raised safety concerns. “In the first round I faced off against Marty Dack and I was really happy with the win, my blower belt started to disintegrate just after I shifted into top gear at around the 330 foot mark, so to take the win was a very pleasant surprise,” said Ben Bray. “While the semi-final against our fellow Queenslander Stuart Bishop didn’t go my way, it was still a great weekend at the track for Team Bray Racing and it is just a shame that we didn’t get to see Stewie take on John Zappia in the final round!” Team Bray Racing were joined at Calder Park Raceway by selected members of an Instagram group known as ‘Igers Melbourne’, uploaded images from their TBR experience to Instagram across the event using the hashtags #slammergramers, #teambrayracing and #hogsbreath.

CASTROL-BACKED BIKE RACING WRAP Castrol-backed Pata Honda rider Jonathan Rea visited the Motorland Aragon podium for the first time in his career after finishing third in Race 1 of the second round of the 2014 World Superbike championship in Spain. It was the 34th World Superbike podium of the 27-year-old British rider’s career after he battled throughout the 17-lap opener to finish behind the Kawasaki machines of Tom Sykes and Loris Baz. Rea was unable to repeat his podium performance in race two, crossing the line in fifth place after a softer front tyre option left him with a loss of feeling from the front end of his Pata Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade. “It’s been a really positive weekend for us to go back on the podium this

early in the season,” said Rea. I really enjoy riding the bike at this circuit and we’ve made a lot of improvements since Phillip Island. We deserved two solid top fives and I feel we can now take some momentum to Assen where we

know the bike is good and build on this at a circuit I really enjoy. His compatriot and team-mate, Leon Haslam, took two top-ten placings, finishing Race 1 in ninth place and

coming home eighth in the second 17-lapper, which was also won by Tom Sykes. Both Pata Honda riders have moved up in the points standings ahead of the team’s home race at Assen in two weeks’ time. Rea holds fifth position with Haslam moving into the top-ten in ninth. World Supersport Castrol-backed Pata Honda rider Michael van der Mark put right his no-score at the opening championship round in Australia by finishing second in in the feeder category’s race at Aragon. In the MotoGP World Championship the Castrol-backed GO&FUN Honda team left the United States with a bitter feeling as both Alvaro Bautista and Scott Redding retired from the Grand Prix of the Americas. After a difficult qualifying in the early stages of the race, Bautista was keeping a pace similar to those riders fighting for third position, until he lost the front end, crashing at turn 6.

Team-mate Scott Redding suffered a problem with the right side of the front tyre, which dropped a lot after only a few laps, forcing him to slow down before crashing out on lap 20 of the 1

CASTROL HONDA SURVIVE WTCC MARRAKESH CHALLENGE TO SECURE SOLID POINTS The Castrol Honda WTCC team got off to a mixed start at the opening round of the 2014 World Touring Car Championship in Marrakesh, Morocco. Tiago Monteiro finished fifth in Race 1 behind a dominant Citroen 1-2-3 of Jose Maria Lopez, Sebastien Loeb and Yvan Muller. In Race 1, the Honda Civics started from rows 4 and 5 on the grid with Monteiro making a great start to be fifth into the first corner. “We have collected loads of data that can now help us improve the performance,” said Monteiro. “Our set up improved every time we went on track, this has been a big test weekend and we learned a lot. I’m sure we will be faster next weekend at Le Castellet.”

STRENGTH TO PERFORM

The WTCC race format saw Race 2 with the reverse grid format which put Honda teammate Mehdi Bennani on the front row, much to the noisy delight of his many local fans. Bennani had finished fifth for Race 2 but was later excluded after his car was found to be underweight in postrace scrutineering. This saw Monteiro move to 10th overall for Race 2. Castrol Honda’s star driver and WTCC legend Gabriele Tarquini sadly took no further part in proceedings after an incident in free practice two, caused by dust on the track from an earlier race. His Honda Civic was taken straight back to the workshop to be re-shelled before next weekend’s second round of the FIA WTCC at Circuit Paul Ricard in France.

Tarquini’s 200th race will now be Race 1 at Paul Ricard where he’ll be looking for a happier weekend come April 19-20. 2014 WTCC Standings POS

Castrol-backed BMW secure third consecutive USCC podium Castrol EDGE-oiled BMW Team RLL scored a third consecutive podium in the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, finishing second and sixth in the GTLM class in Long Beach. John Edwards and Dirk Müller scored their first podium of the season, racing the number 56 BMW Z4 GTLM to second place. After 75 laps of the 1.968-mile street circuit, the duo finished 5.408 seconds behind the winning Corvette of Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia in the 100-minute race. “Sometimes there are second places that come easily, but this was not one of those. John did a fantastic job in the beginning and really had a good start,” said Müller. “He made up one spot and was a solid second. With the prototype in front of all the GTLM cars but one, first place was gone. There were no yellows, which was good for the spectators, but unlucky for us. I had lots of understeer, which meant I could not attack, but my car was quick enough to keep Tommy Milner behind me.” Bill Auberlen and Andy Priaulx had a disappointing finish in sixth after an excellent start in the number 55 car. As Priaulx entered the pit lane on lap 32 he nicked the wall and knocked off the right side mirror, costing them an extra 15 seconds for the mechanics to replace the door. However, sixth was enough for them to retain the lead in the driver points standings.

STRENGTH TO PERFORM

“From the moment the car left the pits to the moment I jumped out of it I felt really strong. Unfortunately, I had some bad luck,” said Priaulx. “I got delayed by the prototypes and that cost us some seconds on the way into the pits. I lost the mirror and that cost us some more time. Unfortunately in a short race like this you can’t have that happen. There were no yellows and we just needed one to be back up there. It is just disappointing we are not where we wanted to be, but we are still leading the championship.” Round three of the championship takes crews to California for the Monterey Grand Prix - May 3-4.

1ST & 3RD FOR CASTROL TEAM TOYOTA YARIS ON SASOL RALLY The factory Castrol Toyota team’s Leeroy Poulter and Elvéne Coetzee consolidated their lead in the 2014 South African Rally Championship with a comfortable second round win in the Sasol Rally in Mpumalanga. In its long and illustrious history, only seven drivers have won the SASOL Rally. Until this weekend’s 23rd running of the event, only one driver on the list sported a single victory. But thanks to an emphatic win in the Lowveld, Poulter and co-driver Coetzee are now also multiple winners of the tough event. The pair started strong, despite being first on the road. They managed to stay in touch with early leaders Mark Cronje/ Robin Houghton (Ford Fiesta) who started an advantageous 8th on the road. Poulter took the outright lead on Stage 4 of the rally. “The conditions were really tricky,” said Poulter after Day One. “We were at a distinct disadvantage on the first three stages, especially after some early morning rain that made it very slippery in

STRENGTH TO PERFORM

places. But then we were into repeats of those stages, and road conditions were very different and much improved, we could go a lot faster and take the lead.” Poulter powered his Castrol Team Toyota Yaris S2000 through the last

four stages of the day, and had a 1:52.6 lead by the time the sun set over Sabie. Day Two saw the pair consolidate this lead, despite an early charge by Cronje/ Houghton. By the time the dust settled over the forests of the Lowveld, their

lead has shrunk marginally to 1:46.5 more than enough to claim an emphatic second victory on the SASOL Rally. “We had a bit of a scare in Stage 10,” said Poulter, “We hit a rock and punctured the left front tyre about 8 km from the end of the stage. We couldn’t afford to lose too much time, so decided to push on rather than change the wheel. In the end we lost only 10 seconds in that stage.” It was a different story for their teammates. Hergen Fekken and Carolyn Swan, in the second Castrol Team Toyota Yaris started in fine form, running in 3rd position after the first three stages. But disaster struck on Stage 4, when the pair had a puncture on the left front of their car. They tumbled to seventh overall as a result. “We knew it was going to be tough after that,” said the unflappable Fekken. “But we had no choice: We just had to push on and hope for the best.” His efforts paid off, as the pair ended Day One in fourth overall. They maintained this position throughout Day Two, despite an issue with the rear subframe on their Toyota Yaris, which forced them to use only front-wheel drive for the final group of stages. “Our service crew did an amazing job,” said Fekken after the event. “They kept us going despite the challenges, and we are overjoyed at the result.” The result in question was a second successive podium finish for Fekken and Swan, as they grabbed third overall. With this victory, Poulter extends his lead in the overall championship, while Fekken cements second place. The next round of the championship is Round 3, the PMC Rally, which takes place at the Rallystar facility in Bapsfontein, Gauteng, on 23 and 24 May, 2014. Toyota enjoys a mutually beneficial relationship with Castrol, Toyota Financial Services, IMPERIAL Toyota Group, Innovation Group, Bosch, DeWalt, Donaldson, Edgecam, Ferodo, 4x4 Mega World, FreeM, NGK, Robor, SKF and Spanjaard.
