2013 - A YEAR IN REVIEW 2013 was a huge year for Castrol in Motorsport across the globe, with world championship wins aplenty. Castrol lubricants were used to power the Polo R WRC which saw the Volkswagen Motorsport squad claim the World Rally Championship manufacturers’ crown. Frenchman Sebastien Ogier complimented that with his maiden win in the drivers’ championship aboard the Castrol-oiled Polo R WRC. In the World Endurance Championship the Audi R18 e-tron quattro run on Castrol EDGE was a class above the rest with the Audi Sport team winning all but two races for the season. The 2013 European Truck Racing Championship was once again run and won by Castrol Team Hahn Racing’s Jochen Hahn. Hahn clinched the drivers’ title for a third consecutive year after an incredible weekend at the final round in Le Mans aboard his Castroloiled MAN. Darren Morgan was crowned the 2012/2013 ANDRA Pro Series Top Fuel Champion in Australia aboard his Castrol-oiled dragster. It was Morgan’s fourth national title. South Australian teenager Todd Hazelwood was awarded with a drive in the final round of the 2013 Dunlop V8 Supercar Series after winning the Castrol EDGE-backed Shannons Supercar Showdown reality television contest last year. For the second year running a Castrolbacked driver won New Zealand’s premier motorsport championship with Greg Murphy crowned the 2013 V8 SuperTourer Champion. 2013 saw team Acc-sell-or-ators win a VIP trip to the 2014 Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar race for winning the inaugural Castrol EDGE V8 Predictor. An all-new online fantasy tipping competition the Castrol EDGE V8 Predictor proved a huge hit with V8 fans across the globe.

In the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship the competition was fierce with four drivers still in championship contention heading into the final round at Sydney Olympic Park - two of which were racing behind the wheel of Castrol EDGE-oiled factory Fords. The championship win was agonisingly close and while 2013 did not eventuate into series victory for Castrol it did see Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards claim Ford Performance Racing’s debut win at the Bathurst 1000 and Castrol’s 18th at Mount Panorama.

JOHN FORCE WINS 16TH NHRA TITLE The 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing tour saw Castrol-backed Ford driver John Force win an unprecedented 16th Championship in the Funny Car division. It was an exceptional year for the veteran racer who took four victories for the season. Force was led to victory by an outstanding team effort with crew chiefs Jimmy Prock and Danny DeGennaro. Prock became the third Funny Car crew chief to win NHRA Funny Car championships with two different drivers (Robert Hight and Force). It was a Force family affair in 2013 with daughter Brittany Force winning the Rookie of the Year award behind the wheel of her Castrol EDGE Top Fueler. Meanwhile older sister Courtney Force finished seventh in the Funny

In the World Endurance Championship the Audi R18 e-tron quattro run on Castrol EDGE was a class above the rest with the Audi Sport team winning all but two races for the season. Audi drivers Loïc Duval, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish took out the drivers championship. It was a fitting end for McNish who retired at the end of 2013 after an illustrious racing career. Audi began the 2013 WEC as defending champions after the

brand with the four rings scored the first victory for a hybrid racecar in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2012. Furthermore, Audi won the new FIA World Endurance Championship that year and is thus the first World Champion in history with a hybrid sports car. SKODA AND CASTROL EDGE DOMINATE 2013 EUROPEAN RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP The Castrol EDGE supported Skoda Motorsport squad dominated the European Rally Championship in 2013 with victory on eight of the 12 events on offer. CASTROL TEAM HAHN RACING WINS 2013 EUROPEAN TRUCK RACING CHAMPIONSHIP The 2013 European Truck Racing Championship was once again run and won by Castrol Team Hahn Racing’s Jochen Hahn. Hahn clinched the drivers’ title for a third consecutive year after an incredible weekend at the final round at Le Mans. At the final round, Hahn ranked himself to the top of the overall standings after the third of four races. After the last championship race of the season, the MAN pilot then celebrated as the old and new European champion.

From 1997 to 1999, Heinz-Werner Lenz and his Mercedes won the Race-Trucks class three times consecutively – and now, Jochen Hahn and Castrol Team Hahn Racing have secured themselves the #1 for the third time in succession with another successful title defense. An exceptional victory that will surely enter the history books of truck motorsport. After this renewed triumph, Jochen Hahn thanked his team, his partners and all other helpers who supported the team throughout the season.

CASTROL EDGE ROOKIE TODD HAZELWOOD WINS SHANNONS SUPERCAR SHOWDOWN South Australian teenager Todd Hazelwood was awarded with a drive in the final round of the 2013 Dunlop V8 Supercar Series after winning the Castrol EDGE-backed Shannons Supercar Showdown reality television contest last year. The 18-year-old toughed out eight weeks of fierce competition, beating seven other up and coming drivers, to be crowned as the winner of the 2013 Shannons Supercar Showdown competition. As part of the top prize, Hazelwood was also rewarded with an opportunity to test drive with his beloved Ford Performance Racing team. Unfortunately the youngster endured a Dunlop V8 Supercar Series debut to forget as a qualifying accident with Steve Owen

saw his damaged car sidelined for both races in Sydney. Hazelwood may have failed to gain any V8 race experience on his outing with Minda Motorsport at Sydney, but he says there were plenty of positives to take. “There were a lot of positives I have taken from it. To race on a street circuit like Homebush is very demanding and I learnt a lot,” he said. “To drive a V8 Supercar is something I will never forget. I don’t think I made a complete disgrace of myself and I was there and thereabouts in the times. I’m focussing on the positives and trying not to get too down on what happened. It was pretty tough to get over it initially.” Hazelwood will join FPR in 2014 to take up his testing role with the team.
GREG MURPHY CLAIMS 2013 NZ V8 SUPERTOURER TITLE For the second year running a Castrolbacked driver won New Zealand’s premier motorsport championship with Greg Murphy crowned the 2013 V8 SuperTourer Champion. Following Supercheap Auto Racing’s Scott McLaughlin championship success in 2012, Mike Pero Racing’s Greg Murphy won the 2013 BNT New Zealand V8 SuperTourers Championship, clinching victory after two thrilling races in the final round. Castrol was represented well within the series front runners, and Murphy entered the final race just one point ahead of another Castrol-supported driver, Ant Pedersen. The Mike Pero Commodore boasts a highly-tuned 7.0 litre, 575hp Chevrolet V8 that relies on Castrol EDGE 10W-60

INAUGURAL CASTROL EDGE V8 PREDICTOR A HUGE SUCCESS 2013 saw team Acc-sell-or-ators win a VIP trip to the 2014 Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar race for winning the inaugural Castrol EDGE V8 Predictor. Scoring the most points in the inaugural V8 Predictor competition sees team Acc-sell-or-ators win the amazing VIP trip which includes flights, accommodation, tickets, spending money and a hot lap of the Adelaide track in a V8 Supercar. Acc-sell-or-ators topped the overall standings by 30 points over ‘Kiwichik racing’ with ‘Clearly No Way’ rounding out the top-three. The battle amongst the Experts saw the Speedcafe.com Team win a close race with international sportscar racer Oliver Gavin by a mere five points.

2013 V8 SUPERCARS CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW In the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship the competition was fierce with four drivers still in championship contention heading into the final round - two of which were racing behind the wheel of Castrol EDGE-oiled factory Fords. The championship win was agonisingly close and while 2013 did not eventuate into a championship win for Castrol it did see Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards claim victory at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Driving on Castrol oil the #5 Ford of Winterbottom took the factory driver to his maiden Bathurst victory as he and Richards hoisted the Peter Brock trophy high above the podium at Mount Panorama. The victory also marked the first in the 11 year history of the Castrolbacked Ford Performance Racing outfit. The win takes Castrol oil to a record 18 Bathurst victories at the mountain, a feat not bettered by any other oil. Rick Kelly finished as the highest Castrol-backed Nissan Motorsport driver in the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship – the return year for Nissan in top-level Australian touring car racing. Kelly was the most consistent of the Nissan Altima drivers across the course of the year, taking 12 top-10 results and finishing inside the top half of the field. Sydney 500, the final round of the year, marked a

special moment in the career of Russell Ingall – a man who started, and has now finished – his full time V8 Supercars career on Castrol oil. Ingall bowed out of full time V8 Supercars racing in Sydney with a solid top-10 finish and a credible 14th in the championship despite a rocky year, which was highlighted by a podium result at the Armor All Gold Coast 600. In 2014 V8 Supercars will enjoy a 16 event schedule with a return to Sydney Motorsport Park as a new addition to the calendar.

HAYS WINS THE BATTLE, HANSSEN THE WAR! For the second consecutive year, Chris Hays was victorious at the final round of the Castrol EDGE CIK Stars of Karting Series, but it wasn’t enough to stop Joey Hanssen from taking the title to the Netherlands. In taking the title, the 21-year-old Dutchman becomes the first international racer to win a CIK Stars of Karting Championship. After dominating the heat races, Hanssen confirmed his stranglehold on the Jon Pizarro Trophy in the first final at the final round - his seventh final victory of the 2013 season. In the second final though, Hays took it to the 2011 World Cup Champion before speeding away with his second round win of the year aboard his Energy Kart.

The win by the outgoing Champion ensured that he was the only driver to inflict a defeat in a main event on Hanssen throughout the 2013 championship.
Grother - who switched to an ART GP chassis for the final round - recorded fourth and third placed results to secure third in the Championship despite a valiant effort from Treseder.
“Consistency is definitely the key to winning championships, we had a few issues throughout the year but it’s great to finish the year with another win, but it was Joey who was the most consistent this year,” said Hays
Liam McLellan etched his name in Australian karting history as the Pro Junior (KFJ) Champion alongside the likes of 2014 Supercheap Auto Racing recruit Tim Slade and IndyCar driver Ryan Briscoe.
The battle for third in the Championship was the major on-track interest in Pro Gearbox with John Grother, Kel Treseder and Jason Pringle all fighting it out.
Entering the final round second in the standings, three points adrift of James Abela, McLellan needed to be right on top of his game during the final round. Abela’s podium finish in the final round ensured that he held on to second place
in the championship while Andrew Kahl secured third place in the title chase with a fifth place in Melbourne. In Pro Light (KF), Matthew Waters started the final round as the points leader, however George Geranis was keen to show up the Sydney-sider on his home track. It wasn’t to be, with Geranis spinning heading into turn one in the final race of the year. Queenslander Troy Loeskow came into the event third on points with a mathematical chance at winning the Championship and then went on to win the first final before also dominating the second. Geranis’ turn one spin elevated Loeskow to second in the Title should he remain in the event. He rocketed to the front ahead of Pierce Lehane and was a chance to take the Championship should misfortune hit Waters.
