MURPH CONQUERS THE MOUNTAIN Greg Murphy has flown the Castrol EDGE flag at Bathurst posting pole position and taking third overall honors over the weekend. Murphy and teammate Allan Simonsen were close behind the top two Garth Tander/Nick Percat and Craig Lowndes/Mark Skaife who both produced an inspired run to the end. Behind Murphy/Simonsen for Castrol EDGE were Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards for FPR in fourth place. In eighth and ninth was the Russell Ingall/Jack Perkins combination and Tony D’Alberto with partner Dale Wood. VIP Petfoods partnership of Steve Owen and Paul Morris crossed in eleventh after a late race blown tyre. Phillip Island success story Will Davison and Luke Youlden unfortunately couldn’t replicate their run in the last round with Youlden spearing off the circuit on a restart, the pair fought back to claim 18th. The Stratco racer did not have a smooth day with David Reynolds and Tim Blanchard finishing in 19th. The Jack Daniel’s pair both suffered throughout the 1000km race, with both

cars either delayed by mechanical issues or offtrack excursions; Rick and Owen Kelly finished in 22nd and Todd Kelly and David Russell in 24th. The rest of the Castrol field fell to the wayside with Paul Dumbrell and Dean Canto colliding with the Forrest’s Elbow fence ending their day and the Shannon’s Mars entry tried to rejoin the race after Water’s hit the tyre barrier, however they had too many uncompleted laps to be classed as finishers.

SORDO – MINI’S

DRIVING ACE With the MINI World Rally Team once again making their mark in France – only their fourth rally of 2011, the team and drivers are looking to build on their momentum for Spain.

Sordo was able to clock four fastest special stage lap times during the rally despite racking up less hours behind the wheel of his rally car than most of the field.

Principal driver Dani Sordo not only took his MINI John Cooper Works WRC car to second place on the podium in Rally de France but also clocked some personal records of his own.

His incredible feats in only four rallies have put him into eighth place in the drivers championship – to put this into perspective ninth placed Henning Solberg has competed in all but one rally this year.

HIRVONEN AIMING TO BE WORLD CHAMPION

The Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally team are in preparation for the penultimate race of the 2011 season with both the drivers’ championship and the manufacturers championship to be decided in the next two rounds. Mikko Hirvonen has changed the landscape of the Rally championship after only two rounds, with his win in Australia and his points grab in France as well as helped by some bad luck for reigning champion Sebastien Loeb, the Finn has managed close a considerable gap to a tie with the Frenchman.

however he is continuing to show his capabilities, winning his first power stage in France last week.

Jari Matti Latvala is currently behind the top three which includes Citroen’s other driver, Sebastien Ogier,

Rally Spain will be a test of wills and a decisive marker for the championship; it will run from October 20-23.

The pair will be aiming to ruin the rule of the Citroen’s, Hirvonen especially – he lost out in the drivers’ championship to Sebastien Loeb by only one point in 2009.

TRUST SYNTHETICS TRUST CASTROL EDGE THE SPECIALISTS WHEN IT COMES TO EXTREME POWER & PERFORMANCE WHY SYNTHETIC OILS?

Get the best protection for your engine by choosing a high quality synthetic oil. Synthetic oils offer significant advantages over mineral oils.

HIGH TEMPERATURE STABILITY: Synthetic oils are able to withstand higher operating temperatures under which mineral oils begin to break down. Synthetic oils provide optimum lubrication at extreme temperatures reducing wear and extending engine life.

FASTER LUBRICATION ON COLD STARTS: Synthetic oils remain more fluid at cold start up temperatures, circulating faster to protect moving parts within the engine. Because synthetic oils flow quicker, the engine reaches optimal operating efficiency sooner. Mineral oils on the other hand, tend to thicken in colder temperatures making the engine less efficient.

BETTER EVERYDAY PROTECTION: Synthetic oils are most resistant to the chemical degradation that comes with everyday driving. Synthetic oils provide better protection for your engine under normal as well as arduous driving conditions, minimising oil degradation and protecting against harmful deposits.

WHY CASTROL EDGE?

At Castrol we know a thing or two about synthetic engine oil. In fact, we developed the very first fully synthetic racing oil. We’ve poured over 100 years of experience and lubricant technology into Castrol EDGE, the best engine oil we’ve ever made.

PROVEN PERFORMANCE IN EXTREME CONDITIONS: Castrol EDGE is able to withstand higher operating temperatures under which other engine oils begin to break down. Tests prove that even after blasting an engine at 340ºC, it is still running 72 hours later. Castrol EDGE will also protect your engine at start up with its superior cold flow properties. At -55ºC Castrol EDGE still flows while the competitor synthetic oil has almost solidified. Castrol EDGE’s synthetic technology provides outstanding protection at extreme temperatures, reducing wear and extending the life of your engine.

MAXIMUM POWER FOR LONGER: Get the best performance out of your engine by choosing Castrol EDGE. Tests prove that Castrol EDGE delivers maximum horsepower for up to 45% longer than competitor synthetic oils.

WALLABIES INTO THE SEMI FINALS The Wallabies have defeated the reigning Rugby World Cup Champions the Springboks in a close 11-9 win in New Zealand over the weekend.

Despite emerging only two points ahead at the final siren, the statistics tell an even more admirable story of a win the Australian’s stole at the last minute.

The Australian’s went into the quarterfinal clash as the underdogs, however despite an impressive offensive attack by the South African’s the Wallabies managed to hold their line.

With fewer errors, more time in their oppositions half and more ball handling time, the South African team should have won the match, however the substitute Australian team were able to

outclass the Springboks to make it to the semi finals. They will next take on arch rivals and hosts New Zealand, the last time the two met was for the Castrol EDGE Tri Nations, where Australia took home the title.

CASTROL EDGE LOTUS EDGES OUT THE FIELD The Castrol EDGE Lotus Exige of Mark O’Connor impressed in last weekend’s Bathurst round of the Australian GT Championship. Despite being one of the smaller cars in the field, it matched up with the bigger cars – an improbability when looking at the Lotus on paper. O’Connor was able to take home a fifth and an eighth place finish in his Lotus and a lot of additional confidence in his car and ability.

RICHO

DOUBLES HIS LUCK

RAIN HOLTS RACE FOR HOLDER Chris Holder has secured eighth place in the Speedway World Championship after dangerous conditions halted the Gorzow Gran Prix in Poland over the weekend. The racing was stopped before the semi finals could begin, meaning that the points tallied

put Holder into the eighth spot for the season. The Australian rider will be keen to continue in the competition in 2012 with his momentum in the final heats looked to move him well into the semi finals before rain closed the event.

WATERS HITS THE SKIDS Winner of the Shannon’s Supercar Showdown Cameron Waters claimed his prize over the weekend, partnering with Grant Denyer in the Shannon Mars Kelly Racing entry in the Supercheap Bathurst 1000. Waters and Denyer both made their V8 Supercars Bathurst debut on the mountain, however Waters was the

youngest ever driver to drive in the race, he also went into the race still on his L plates. The pair were confident to keep pace with the field however seventeen year old Waters went into the Elbow with too much speed connecting with the tyre wall damaging the car.

He was able to limp back to the pits however the car was in need of lengthy repairs pushing the pair over 50 laps behind the field once they rejoined the race. Unable to close the vast gap the pair were one of four cars who were DNF’s, as they were unable to be classed as finishers as they had too many laps to finish.
