Lee Brice January 10, 2015 at 8pm In the pantheon of Nashville songwriters, Lee Brice is a standout, the kind of craftsman that country music superstars like Garth Brooks seek out to produce compelling hits. In fact, Brooks had one of his biggest with Brice’s 2007 “More Than a Memory,” which became the first only song to date to debut at No. 1 in the entire history of the country music charts. But Brice, who has been writing songs since he was 10 years old, has also enjoyed solo success as a singer/ songwriter. There’s something about the start of a new year that makes us want to wipe the slate clean and have a fresh outlook on life. We set goals and resolve to break bad habits and replace them with good ones. For our purposes, put those thoughts about buying a treadmill or bringing a salad to work for lunch aside and concentrate on how to become a better slot player. 1. Resolve to stop being a passive player. It’s easy to walk into a casino, sit down in front of the first open machine you see, and start feeding it currency. But even though slot play is based 99 percent on luck, there’s still a tiny fraction of cerebral input that you can employ to try to gain an advantage. One such way is to make it a point to walk around and observe people playing the machines. If you frequent a particular casino, you’ll in all likelihood be able to pick up on trends. You may notice a particular machine that seems to hit all the time. It may just be coincidence or it may be that the machine’s internal computer is programmed at a higher “hit” frequency or a higher percentage payback. 2. Resolve to take advantage of ticket-in/ticket-out technology. The cashless system is designed as a convenience for the casino operators, but there are features from which players will also benefit. The cashless system makes it possible for slot players to collect tickets with modest wins and hopefully have them add up to a nice little score when it’s time to go home. For example, if you buy into a machine for $20 and in a short period of time you see your money double or even triple, the voucher system makes it easy to capitalize on your good fortune and move on to another machine. 3. Resolve to not be greedy. It’s an easy thing to say, but so hard to do. If you

want to be a successful player, however, you must get used to it. Chasing jackpots or not being satisfied with modest gains have been the ruin of many a slot player. It’s nice to win. When you do, you owe it to yourself to be content. America’s love affair with cooking, fueled by the popularity of cable TV network shows devoted to the culinary arts, has made pop culture icons out of chefs who view Las Vegas and other gambling jurisdictions as bold new frontiers for exposure. Not only have a number of celebrity chefs, including Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, and Emeril Lagasse, opened signature restaurants in gaming destinations, chefs of lesser renown are likewise making names for themselves because of their connection to the casino-dining scene. The desire on behalf of casino properties to create the most pleasant experience for their guests extends beyond upscale restaurants. It also reaches to 24-hour snack shops and coffee venues, as well as cocktail service. 6. Resolve to expand your gaming horizons. If you primarily gravitate toward the slots, give the table games a chance. The dealers at roulette, blackjack, and craps are more than eager to assist you in getting to know the games, especially during a time when it isn’t crowded. You may find a new favorite game! Starting on January 5, Sky City Casino Hotel will begin construction on a series of renovations to give a great new look to the Huwak’a Restaurant. Atlantic City Casino Saved—For Now As we’ve been reporting since last summer, Atlantic City has experienced an alarmingly sharp decline in attendance, prompting the closure of four major casinos in 2014. But now for some good news: According to the December 18, 2014 issue of USA Today, billionaire investor Carl Icahn has come to the rescue of the Taj Mahal Casino with a $20 million pledge to rescue the embattled property from imminent closure. The casino, a property of Trump Entertainment Resorts, is currently undergoing bankruptcy proceedings, but the cash injection will allow it to operate until a settlement has been reached. Although he refused to support a local casino union’s appeal to the bankruptcy court to reinstall health and pension benefits, Ichan has expressed his reluctance to otherwise let the chips fall where they may, stating in a letter to Trump Entertainment CEO Robert Griffin that he could not be so callous
as to let 3,000 hardworking people lose their jobs. Still, current estimates reveal that the Taj has been bleeding money to

But if you ask Grandma if she knows the difference between Class 2 and Class 3 gambling games, she’s likely to

Here’s another wrinkle: Casinos can place Class 2 “slot machines” in their cocktail lounges, no sweat. Maybe that’s because Class 2 slots replicate pull tabs, which are also Class 2—and therefore not considered hardcore gambling devices. With the exception of horseracing, all Class 2 games are exempt from taxation. (Horseracing operations pay 46 percent of their profits in taxes—20 percent to the horsemen’s association with which they are affiliated and 26 percent to the state.) Class 3 games on the other hand are all taxable. The one Class 3 game that boggles is Baccarat, or Mini-Baccarat, both of which are available at a few casinos in our state. You’d think this game, which basically requires no hardcore strategy, should be Class 2. Just sit, sip, and pretend you’re James Bond. And the champagne should flow accordingly. But, no. It remains solidly Class 3 for some reason. Why? You got me. I just report this stuff.

THE PREDICTABILITY FACTOR
One of my readers recently asked if I have developed a system to beat the continuous shuffle machines. My first inclination was to respond asking why they would even want to play these games. But then I realized: Hey, to each their own. We all have our preferences. Me? I know that in order to increase my chances to win big, I need to play games with a maximum predictability factor. Which is why blackjack is my game—it’s one of the most predictable, and therefore winnable, games in the house. No wonder, then, that some casinos have introduced continuous shuffle machines—they destroy much of the game’s predictability. Sure, there is still a certain amount of
intra-round predictability. For example, in a six-deck game there could never be more than 24 aces dealt per round, and those aces should be fairly well spread out among the decks. Not so with continuous shuffle games. The nature of the constant shuffling can rearrange things so that strange clumps of cards not often found in hand-shuffled games start to appear. That makes for greater swings of imbalances, which in turn transform blackjack from a game of skill into a game of chance. I don’t even like the normal shuffle machine tables because I lose the advantage of following the cards through a shuffle, which is so easy to do with
the methods I created for dealer-shuffled games. Why would I sacrifice an edge to the house? But continuous shuffle machine tables are even worse because you lose the round-toround (inter-round) predictability. If you play without caring whether you win or lose, then fine. But if you’re like me, looking to make some money, and the more the better, then you become more discriminating about the games you play. While we’re on the subject of player disadvantage, let me mention that I don’t even like playing the multi-deck games anymore because they, too, are far less predictable than the single- and double-pitch games. It’s easy to forget that blackjack was invented centuries ago as a single deck game. And it remained a single-deck game until the 1960s, when casinos began to realize they could limit player gains by adding more decks. And remember when digital blackjack games were introduced in the late 1990s? They were like video games:
you sat down at the table and every player had a screen where a virtual dealer “dealt” them the cards. Only problem was, players quickly surmised that these were no better than slot machines. Serious blackjack players stayed away in droves. Few sat down at the digital tables and even fewer came back to play them again. It was pretty clear there was no predictability to the games—they were simulated by a computer’s random number generator—and they were programmed to beat the players in the long run. Of course, the casinos can offer what they want—it’s their prerogative. I have my prerogative, too—I can be choosy about the games I play. And my years of experience tell me that continuous shuffle machines, multiple-deck games, and digital blackjack all put players at a great disadvantage. Hopefully those games will go the way of Digital 21. You won’t find me at those tables. But, hey, to each their own.

Video Poker Alternatives Dear Mark: When it comes to video poker games, which do you prefer, Jacks-or-Better, or one of the many Bonus games that are offered? I am figuring it is Jacks-or-Better as you use it as an example more often than not. John P.
There are multiple reasons why I use the same ol’ Jacksor-Better machines as an example in this column. Not only are they still pretty darn popular, they are less volatile than bonus machines, have a respectable payback percentage, and their strategies are
straightforward and more intuitive than bonus games. Regarding the payback return: here you have to give up a little. The highest paying Jacks-or-Better pay table is a 9/6 (nine for a full house, six for a flush) machine, which, with basic strategy, returns 99.5 percent. Compared to a positive expectation game like 10/7 Double Bonus Poker, you are looking at a return of slightly more than 100 percent over the long haul—that is if each hand is played correctly. When it comes to volatility,
a Jacks-or-Better machine is not as volatile as Bonus Poker, Double Bonus Poker, or Triple Bonus, as adding each additional bonus adds to each machine’s unpredictability. The more volatile a game is, the more your bankroll will fluctuate, which makes you feed the machine more just to keep you in action. Because the payouts on any Bonus game are reduced on hands like two pairs, three-ofa-kind, etc., but increased on hands like quads, I am not one to endure the swings or keep feeding a machine to chase premium hands. While many video poker experts believe that a suchn-such machine is the cat’s meow, I like to think that there is a place for many different video poker opportunities. The crux of the choice of any machine comes down to selecting a decent pay table, utilizing expert play that you can easily learn, and what volatility you are willing to tolerate. The games you want to play are the ones that help you achieve your goals.
