Contemporary Christian music’s hottest artist, Chris Tomlin is coming to the Inn of the Mountain Gods on Saturday, October 8. Hailing from Grand Saline, Texas, Tomlin has released eight albums over his 15-year career, garnering two RIAA gold certifications, two platinum certifications, and four top 200 albums, most notably 2013’s Burning Lights, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, one of only four Christian albums to ever do so, thanks to singles like “Whom Shall I Fear [God of Angel Armies]” and “God’s Great Dance Floor.” Tomlin’s other hit singles include 2004’s “How Great is Our God,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart, and “Our God,” which spent 10 weeks at the No. 1 spot on the Hot Christian Songs chart in 2010. Born and raised in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the 17th of 18 children, Carlos Mencia came to the United States when he was only three months old. Like so many performers before him, Mencia honed his craft doing standup comedy during amateur night at the Laugh Factory. He later became a nightly regular at the Comedy Store, which led to appearances on television shows like In Living Color, The Arsenio Hall Show, Moesha, and An Evening at the Improv. His success solidified in the 1990s, when he hosted the HBO comedy series Loco Slam in 1994 and Funny is Funny! on Galavision in 1998. His 2000 comedy album, Take a Joke, America, won him additional accolades. Mencia enjoyed further success headlining the 2002 Three Amigos tour with Freddy Soto and Pablo Francisco. In 2005, he debuted Mind of Mencia on Comedy Central, which became one of the strongest shows in the network’s history, averaging about 1.5 million total viewers. He has also been a regular on the holiday season USO Tours to the Persian Gulf. In the past several years, Mencia has gone back to his standup roots, performing at a number of comedy stores throughout the country, which allows him to share his newest material with more intimate audiences. Are They Doing Enough to Win? About 10 days before Custer was saddling up to lead his 7th Cavalry into the hills of Montana, his chief aide came to him with a message. An important one, said the aide. Apparently, a man was in town near the fort with an invention. “An invention?” asked Custer. “What kind of invention?” “I don’t know,” the aide replied. “All he told me is that it will
make you a hero.” Custer laughed and told his aide to tell the man he would see him as soon as he returned from this scouting tour. Then, while mounting up, Custer asked his aide a final question. “What, by the way, is this man’s name? “Gatling,” the aide replied. “Richard Gatling.” Now, we all know how this story ends, but let’s for a minute pretend that Custer had agreed to meet Gatling before riding off. And let’s say he took one or two of Gatling’s “guns” with him on the trip along the Little Big Horn river. Would it have made a difference in the outcome? I don’t know for sure, and neither do you, but one thing we do know is that from the first introduction of the Gatling gun, all descendants of its multi-repeating action have been a part of every arsenal ever since. Caesar and Napoleon said it, and Truman proved it: When you go to war, use every—that’s every—weapon available to win. Now, let’s change the scene and have our cameras pan over to the world of retail: department stores, automobile dealers, movie theatres, restaurants, supermarkets, and, yep, casinos. In the world of retail sales, whether for a product or a service, there’s always a battle going on. It takes place on a daily basis, 365 days a year, sunrise to sunset. And everyone involved is fighting for the same thing: your patronage, otherwise known as your hard-earned dollar.
As such, each casino has a marketing department headed by a marketing director who, hopefully, knows everything there is to know about marketing. The key word here is “hopefully,” because this is easier said than done. So, hopefully the marketing director has a team about him or her who are capable of understanding, and implementing, each “weapon” in their marketing arsenal. Just a few years back, all marketing leaders needed in order to do their jobs was an understanding of radio, television, print, and billboard advertising, plus some savvy in public and private relations. That was all. Know those things and you were a guru in your industry. Then came the internet and, with it, the 800-pound gorilla in the room: social media. Almost overnight, it seemed, the goal posts had been moved. The game was changing. New weapons were being introduced, some good, some . . . not so good. People who had no idea how to use these new web-based weapons were given the responsibility of firing them anyway and hoping for the best. But marketing directors learned fast. Because they know that millions of players are out there in the war to compete for their dollars and, like Richard Gatling’s gun, social media must now be part of the campaign. We know it’s powerful. We know it’s here to stay. And the casinos that get their arms around these mind-expanding weapons will win the battle. Perhaps, even, the war.

Sky City Casino Announces TournEvent of Champions Winner On Saturday, August 27, Sky City Casino hosted the TournEvent of Champions semi-final/final slot tournament. A total of 153 participants (who had previously qualified by earning a Golden Pass) competed for a chance to represent Sky City Casino in the 2016 National TournEvent of Champions in Las Vegas, Nevada. After two rounds and a total of 44 sessions, Harvey V. of Prewitt, New Mexico, received the highest score in the final round, qualifying him to compete in the National Tournament for $1,000,000 and the 2016 title. The Wednesday, September 28 event is being held as we go to press, so we’ll update Harvey’s status in our November issue. Harvey V. of Prewitt, New Mexico, made it through two rounds and a total of 44 sessions to earn his all-expenses-paid trip to represent Sky City Casino in the National Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Casino Scheme Netted Waitress, VP, and Gambler $422K In an article in the Citizen’s Voice, a paper covering the Scranton, PA, area, a former cocktail waitress at the Mohegan Sun Pocono Casino accused of swiping card information has agreed to plead guilty to federal money laundering charges. According to prosecutors, Rochelle Poszeluznyj collected players’ card information from high-end customers with top-level accounts as she served them drinks. Using his executive casino access, casino VP Joseph Pellegrini then made copies of the cards, added free play to them, and gave them to Joseph Heltzel, a gambler at the casino who played mostly poker slot machines. This allowed Heltzel to win money off the credits. The scheme, which played out between May 2014 and April 2015, netted the conspirators a cool $422,147 total. But it looks like that cool net caught these three individuals in some hot water. Pellegrini and Heltzel pleaded not guilty in April after they were issued a 21-count federal indictment. Both men have entered into plea negotiations with prosecutors, although court records indicate they have not yet reached an agreement.
