very year there is one wedding or event that is very special. This year I had the pleasure of helping Alexa Edmunson, her mother and grandmother plan her wedding. I have planned several events for her family over the years. However, during the course of planning her wedding I learned so much about her family and the relationship that parents and grandparents have that have made Alexa the young woman she is today. I asked Alexa to write about her wedding, these relationships and the traditions that her family has passed down. Following are the heart felt words of Alexa Edmunson. Laura Chick Incredible Events

My Dream Wedding A

by Alexa Edmunson

s a child growing up, I had deep, personal ties to members of my family who exemplified strong and lasting marriages. The most prominent of these marriages that would shape my view of what I wanted for myself in my future marriage were the ones of my parents and my maternal grandparents. By example, my family taught me that marriage can be exceedingly rewarding, but by the same token, requires effort and conscious dedication, just like any other meaningful relationship. I came to value the special qualities of these marriages in my family and wanted the same for myself. When I became engaged, my mom and grandmother swept in and helped me with planning practically all aspects of my wedding, which I am so very grateful for.

it quickly became apparent that my grandmother and my mother wanted my wedding to be just as special, and to recreate the fun, joy, and meaning that was a part of my mother’s wedding. I embraced their input and support, and wanted my wedding and marriage to be just as successful as theirs, and that was

Without their love, support, guidance and ideas, my wedding would not have been the “fairytale” affair that it was. I had grown up hearing about how much of an event my mother’s wedding was (at the hands of my grandmother); that it involved friends and family in many memorable events over the course of a week. how my wedding carried on many traditions present in the weddings of my mom and grandmother. In the way of the family, we had an extended celebration on the week leading up to the wedding, including all of the friends and family that could participate. We did a brewery tour in Bend, a July 4th boating day at the lake and on the day before the wedding the men went shooting and the women did a Great-Gatsby themed lawn party with fancy hats and dresses. The family and the wedding party stayed on the wedding venue property together from two days before the wedding to the day after. It really was a grand affair and easily the most fun and special time of my life. I owe my family for the support they gave to me that I could throw such an extended and involved celebration. My mom and grandmother both helped with so many activities and spearheaded so many ideas incorporated into the wedding, but I’ll tell you about a select few of my favorites. My grandmother made my seven bridesmaids a personalized quilt, styled after the vintage wedding theme. She also gave me my hair fascinator that I wore on my wedding day. My mother not only let me wear the wedding dress that she wore,

and slightly adapt it, but she let me wear her corset, and helped me with everything from booking the venue to attending all meetings with the vendors. There were pictures out at

the wedding of my mom and grandmother in the dress, so that everyone would know the history behind the gown I was wearing. There would not have been a wedding week without my grandmother and mother. I had always wanted to wear my mother’s wedding dress for my wedding. She wore her mother’s wedding dress for her own wedding, and I thought that was so special that I wanted to feel that same connection to my mom on my big day that she had felt on hers. When I put on the 52-year-old dress, I loved the style immediately, just as much as I loved the sentiment that it represented. The dress inspired me to style my wedding to complement the soft, vintage, romantic look. Throughout my engagement and on my wedding day, I was reminded of my closeness and connection to my family and the strong marriages that came before me by wearing a wedding dress with so much history. My wedding was not just about my husband and me. It was about continuing the tradition of enjoying and celebrating the fact that we were going to enter into a very special and important relationship for the rest of our lives, just like my relatives had for generations. I was participating in something much larger than myself, which made my wedding so much more meaningful and impactful than it would have otherwise been. I will always be in debt to my family for giving me the gift of my incredible wedding, and can only hope that I can give my future daughter the same gift someday. Thank you Alexa, for allowing me to help you and your family plan your wedding and for sharing your experience with us all. Also, thank you to the following vendors that participated in creating her Dream Wedding; it would not have been possible without you all.

I recently found this article making its rounds on Facebook. Seth’s outlook on what a marriage is supposed to be about is so appropriate, wonderful and heartwarming that I felt compelled to share it with you as you go forward into a life with your partner. I spent time and followed the article back to its original origin and discovered a wonderful blog by Seth Adam Smith, Editor and Chief of ForwardWalking.com. I found his website to be very inspirational and hope you enjoy it as well. Laura Chick You can follow Seth Adam Smith’s Blog at www.sethadamsmith.com. Incredible Events

Marriage Isn’t For You

by Seth Adam Smith / November 2, 2013 http://sethadamsmith.com/2013/11/02/marriage-isnt-for-you/ aving been married only a year and a half, I’ve recently come to the conclusion that marriage isn’t for me. Now before you start making assumptions, keep reading. I met my wife in high school when we were 15 years old. We were friends for ten years until… until we decided no longer wanted to be just friends. :) I strongly recommend that best friends fall in love. Good times will be had by all. Nevertheless, falling in love with my best friend did not prevent me from having certain fears and anxieties about getting married. The nearer Kim and I approached the decision to marry, the more I was filled with a paralyzing fear. Was I ready? Was I making the right choice? Was Kim the right person to marry? Would she make me happy? Then, one fateful night, I shared these thoughts and concerns with my dad. Perhaps each of us have moments in our lives when it feels like time slows down or the air becomes still and everything around us seems to draw in, marking that moment as one we will never forget. My dad giving his response to my concerns was such a moment for me. With a knowing smile he said, “Seth, you’re being totally selfish. So I’m going to make this really simple: marriage isn’t for you. You don’t marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy. More than that, your marriage isn’t for yourself, you’re marrying for a family. Not just for the in-laws and all of that nonsense, but for your future children. Who do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage isn’t for you. It’s not about you. Is There Value in Hiring a Wedding Planner? by Melissa Vandenbroucke Owner, Ceylon Blu Wedding & Event Design Studio

T First...

his is a question that many newly engaged brides ask. There are so many details and plans to make. Where do you start? Sometimes brides just want some simple answers to their planning process and others want guidance all the way through to the wedding. How do you decide what you need?

You have to decide how much YOU want to plan and how much time you have to do this. Most Brides love the idea of planning their wedding but can become overwhelmed as they see all the details involved. A planner should be one who can bring calm and relive some of the stress that comes with planning a major event. They are good listeners and can connect with your vision. They understand clearly what you want and need. They are someone who you feel comfortable with and trust. References are valuable; don’t be afraid to ask for them.

Wedding Coordinators offer great value in many ways. They can help you decide what you need in the way of rentals and decorations. They are knowledgeable of what things cost and can help you get the best price. Wedding planners plan many wedding and this knowledge is to your advantage. They know where to find reputable vendors with the best value for your budget, saving you money and time. They also know how the order and flow of the wedding should go. They have knowledge with the smallest details that you might not have thought of such as table sizes, setup, who will takedown the event, transportation for your guests, lodging and more. Many Coordinators offer different packages such as complete coordination, month of and day of packages. Day of is the most common package, purchased by brides. As the bride, you want to enjoy your wedding day. You do not want to manage or think about what is next or if something is getting done correctly. This package is highly recommended for the simple reason that you should only be www.incredible-events.com

thinking about your friends and family and enjoying your special day. The prices on these packages vary as does each coordinator. Most planners will offer a free consultation just to get to know each other and to see if you are both a “good fit.” With most Brides and Grooms working full time and/or are a full time student, hiring a good wedding planner will be one of the best investments you will make for your special day. You will not regret it. Ceylon Blu Wedding and Event Design Studio, Bend, Oregon, 541-389-1800 Article Photos Courtesy of Dee Mountain Photography & Incredible Events Stock Photography

one are the days of the rubber chicken, soggy vegetable, cookie-cutter wedding. The best caterers are offering unique ideas to make your wedding fun and memorable. Everything from the simple backyard BBQ to the sublime 5-course meal can be spiced up with any of the trends for 2014. Some of the trends are not exactly new, but they do have creative twists. Other trends are just getting started and really emphasize the perA SIMPLE, DELICIOUS sonal style and choices of the Bride and Groom. APPROACH TO MODERN NORTHWEST CUISINE

2. L abeling & Signage — With more and more people becoming aware of their own dietary restrictions, signage for food items is becoming increasingly popular. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten and dairy free guests can all feel comfortable with their menu choices when you provide signs that describe each dish. These can be included either on the buffet table or on individual guest menus.

1. P ersonal Branding — Make your wedding day your own. Choose your favorite food or ingredient, maybe a dish that represents your heritage, perhaps a trademark ingredient of the city/state you grew up in or even pay homage to a favorite restaurant. Incorporate your personality into the catering, and your reception will be that much more unique.

3. L ate Night Snacks — Or a 5:00 pm meal? Yummy, crave-worthy ideas such as popcorn, cheeseburger sliders, milk and cookies or even the late-night arrival of a local food

truck can be a fun addition to the festivities, provides guests with more energy for dancing and helps keep the party going strong!

Photo: Kimberly Kay

4. P re-Ceremony Greeting — Welcome guests to your wedding with a signature cocktail (another form of personal branding) and a lovely little appetizer bite. This is a fantastic way for guests to mingle before the ceremony, feel comfortable in their surroundings and be officially welcomed to your wedding. It is the perfect touch for destination weddings with lots of out of town guests. 5. R ustic — Rustic is still a strong trend. Farm tables, family style dinners with local ingredients, burlap, hand-painted wood signs, barn doors, wildflowers… the list really is endless. Rustic can be paired with themes such as elegant, vintage or country and allows for a lot of creativity. It is a perfect fit with all the natural elements in Central Oregon.

6. D esserts — Although the traditional wedding cake still plays a role in many weddings, the size of the cake seems to be getting smaller to make way for other dessert items. Cupcakes are still popular, but home-baked pies, s’mores, brownie bars, ice cream sundae stations, doughnuts, as well as cookies and cobblers are all coming on very strong. Even the chocolate fountain seems to be making a comeback in the quest to offer guests something more than cake. 7. D IY — Do it Yourself (otherwise known as the rise of Pinterest). This trend encompasses all of the 2014 trends: personal branding, signage, late night snacks, pre-ceremony greeting, rustic and desserts. Choose a trend and do it yourself: welcome packages for out of town guests, meals comprised of salmon or elk caught by the Groom or Bride or desserts made with love by your family. DIY can save you money and add to the personal branding of your wedding. The overall theme of the 2014 trends in catering is an emphasis on creating a one-of-akind, enjoyable, yummy experience that really showcases the Bride and Groom’s individuality. Have fun, and really make the day about you! Bleu Bite Catering, 541-388-1104 bleubitecatering.com

y now you are probably totally overwhelmed by articles, blogs and shows discussing what colors and foliage you should have for your wedding. The following tips on colors and trends will hopefully help you and make it easier for you to select colors and floral arrangements for your wedding. Experts are saying that color trends for 2014 are going to be in the blue, pink, gray and neutral palettes with your favorite colors interspersed for accents. Keep in mind that there are no hard and fast rules for your wedding. Your wedding is about you, so embrace your style, taste and vibe for your wedding. If you like it, it’s in. Begin with your favorite color that you have loved since you were a little girl. Then bring in those accent colors that express your personality. Choosing your flowers can naturally develop the color scheme for your wedding. Textures and patterns play a significant role in the design of your wedding. Too many brides focus overly on complimentary colors as opposed to choosing textures and patterns for accents. Take a walk around your local garden

Give Yourself the

of Music

Gift

I

t’s your wedding day. You’ve set the date and picked the dress….but what about the music? Should you attempt to hire live musicians on your own or should you hire a musical coordinator? In a recent article, musician Roland White says, “Finding music for that special occasion can be a difficult task, whether it’s for your rehearsal dinner, ceremony, cocktail hour or reception. Hiring live music for a special event can be frustrating when you realize you might have to call every wedding musician and band to get it right. Knowing that whomever you choose needs to perform well can put added pressure on making the right choices.” Finding the perfect musician to create those magical moments for you is tricky, but not impossible. Here are some important facts to consider: • When selecting musicians on your own consider narrowing down your desired style before you begin your search. There are many options available in Central Oregon and many brides are breaking away from traditional trends and are going with their own unique sound. You can find

22

Central Oregon Wedding Planning Guide

www.incredible-events.com

a comprehensive list of available musicians on the Central Oregon Weddings website (www. centraloregonweddings.com). • Don’t be afraid to make the music your own. Many times musicians will have a list of songs for you to choose from, but may be willing to learn something new if you request a song they don’t have listed. If you are requesting a song they don’t already know, keep in mind that most require an extra fee per requested song to pay for the time spent learning something new. • Does the musician or group have a professional website? When you visit the site, ideally it will be easy to navigate and will provide several samples of their music demonstrating their style of music and skill level. • Read reviews. When looking for reviews, sites like weddingwire.com, theknot. com and wedding.com are good places to visit as only real wedding clients can comment on the artist/group. • Finally, have a realistic budget for music. Everyone loves a good deal, but getting a bargain doesn’t always mean getting something for cheap. Sometimes it means paying for quality and the peace of mind in knowing your ceremony is in good hands. It’s easy to feel that you are only hiring musicians to play for an hour or two…this shouldn’t cost so much, right? Try to be open-minded about the work and rehearsals that go on weeks prior to your event and the effort which goes into making live music. This is too much work! Isn’t there someone who can do all this for me? If the thought of managing all of the musical details seems overwhelming, consider hiring a musical coordinator. Much like a wedding coordinator, a musical coordinator can greatly simplify your special day. They usually have a select list of screened musicians who are experts in their fields and who specialize in playing for weddings, so you can rest easy knowing music is one detail you don’t have to worry about on that day. And because your musical coordinator has already gone through the process of screening the musicians, he/she can quickly send you samples of exactly what you’re looking for. Here are some things to consider when choosing a musical coordinator: • Choose a professional…It’s important to hire an experienced musical coordinator. True

experience in music coordination comes with time spent planning and playing for weddings. Read reviews, talk to others who have used their services and check out their website and background information to narrow down your search. • Each coordinator will approach things differently - but here are some things you might expect: Your music coordinator can handle all communications prior to and on the day of with your other hired vendors to insure that any details related to music are taken care of. Questions such as when will the musicians arrive and where will they sit are important and necessary details, but aren’t generally something many brides want to worry with on the day of the wedding. Many times the musical coordinator will also attend the wedding rehearsal to ensure timing is correct and any last minute changes are accommodated. • Give them details. The more information you can give your musical coordinator, the better. Think about what style of music best represents you as a person and what songs are important to include. Include information such as what you do and don’t like in music, what

instruments you prefer and what you hope the overall feel of the event to be. • What will a coordinator cost? When Bend Event Music sends an initial quote, the fee for the coordinator is built into that estimate. However, each coordinator may price their services differently. Planning and coordinating the music for a wedding takes between 20 - 25 hours per ceremony so remember that you are paying for experience in the industry as well as for time spent coordinating musician rehearsals, setting up and managing details and being available to you for constant communication regarding those important facts. At the end of the day, whether you hand pick your musicians or hire a music coordinator, make sure your music reflects who you are. Bend Event Music provides both Live Music as well as Music Coordination and hires qualified and seasoned performers who are committed to excellence. It’s what can be created on the dance floor and it’s surprisingly analogous to real life. In a partner dance, as in any relationship, there are different roles and a foundation of communication, respect and play. Start with a simple handhold. You hold your partner’s hand so you’re connected, but not gripping tightly or being so loose that your partner can’t feel you. You want to be fully aware of your partner, just like having eye contact in a conversation. When you move it should be with your core so your partner doesn’t just move your arm on the dance floor, but your whole body, and you’re fully engaged. lanning your wedding can seem like a daunting task, from deciding on your venue and catering choices, to rentals and much more. With that in mind, we have compiled a basic wedding planner to help you navigate the planning process. No matter what stage you are at, you will find tips to help you create your dream wedding. We have designed this guide to be small enough to slip in your purse and carry with you. It is also a reference guide that you can hand over to your Day of Coordinator or that organized family member who is helping out on your wedding day. Before you start planning your big day, it is important to sit down with your family and those involved in the financial decision process and create a budget. This is where a good Wedding Planner can come in and help to guide you through this process. Without a budget, the cost of a wedding can get out of control. Knowing what you have to spend will help guide you in decisions about the size and style of your wedding and vendor selection. Research design ideas and look up inspirational pictures online in places like Google & Pinterest to give you direction.

Creating Your Budget

K

Is Your #1 Task

now what you have to spend. Understand that if you spend more in one area than planned, you may need to cut back somewhere else. A good rule of thumb is not to spend more on your wedding than you can save in one year. If you are wanting to have an elaborate wedding then you may need to consider saving for two years or discussing event financing. If doing any financing you should not finance more than you can pay off in one year. Some Event Rental Companies will provide financing for the rentals and dĂŠcor pieces. Incredible Events has some financing options, for more information call Laura at 541-317-0450.

Tent Sizing

F

iguring out the size of tent needed to accommodate your event can be tricky. You need to consider what you are using it for. Is it for Ceremony seating, or Reception Seating? For Ceremony seating you need to figure 9 sq. ft. per guests. For example, if you are expecting 100 guests you need at least 900 square ft for seating, and don’t forget to count in space for your isle, so you would need a 30 x 40 canopy. For Reception seating refer to the table chart above. To calculate the space multiply the space needed for your table choices by the number of tables. Also, don’t forget to leave room for a dance floor. You can also call Melissa or Laura at Incredible Events for a Free Site Evaluation & Estimate at 541-317-0450.

a self responsible, balanced person, it allows us to interact in a healthy way with our partner. No one wants to be clingy or needy, nor do we want someone messing with our balance and pushing us over. As long as you’re standing on your own two feet (even if they’re both left), you can be part of someone’s movement while maintaining your own happy, healthy independence. For a conversation to begin one person introduces a topic. On the dance floor the man generally proposes the direction, which is leading, and the woman responds with her idea of how to get there, which is following. Many women have a near allergic reaction to the word “follow.” It sounds like saying, “Check your brain at the door and do whatever he tells you.” However think about the choice to follow as a way of expressing, “I am solid in who I am. I know my boundaries and abilities and in no way do I lose part of myself by letting someone else guide.” In a partner dance he leads by asking, rather than demanding. She responds with her own style, whether it’s sexy, playful or flirty. In a dance like West Coast Swing, he leads but she adds her thoughts to the dance. She’s agreed to let him start the conversation but she can interrupt when appropriate so both partners must be able to talk and listen. Above all the music guides the dance. As long as they’re aware of each other and listening to the same song, they can stop along the way and play with the sexy saxophone solo or the flirtatious lyrics. They may not know what’s coming but they’re in sync with each other. It’s true connection.

Exactly what we want in a relationship, right? To be Alluring. Adventurous. Balanced, fully present and fully engaged. Open to confidently connect with your partner. What a beautiful way to experience life with the person you love. They Didn’t Come All This Way for Cake

T

by Stephanie Anderson Stroup, Event Director, Twist Cocktail Catering Co.

he morning was a blur of pedicures, hair appointments, photographs, hugs and those last few tears. Now the moment is finally here. Standing at the water’s edge with the wind whispering through the nearby aspens, you are being announced as Mr. & Mrs. for the first time to your friends and family. All that is left now is the kiss, the clapping and (thankfully) the cocktails. After all, they didn’t come all this way for cake. Make your wedding day deliciously memorable by serving up a beverage selection with originality and flair. Unique flavors, colors and garnishes will wet the whistle of even the most discerning guest. Twist Cocktail Catering Co.’s helpful tips, hints and recipes will get your creative wheels turning.

He Said, She Said

For the cocktail hour, consider creating “His and Hers” signature drinks where both the bride and groom put a personal spin on their favorite libation. For Michelle & Colton’s August wedding, Twist’s mixologists created the Plum-Flower Cosmo (see insert) to compliment Michelle’s playful spirit, and the SyncroEternitini to highlight Colton’s vanagon enthusiasm. Offering a sweet, tangy, vodka martini and a smooth, refreshing, passion fruit cocktail was a perfect way for guests to celebrate the day!

You can never go wrong with a classic cocktail inspired from your parents’ or grandparents’ era. Consider transforming your favorite gin & tonic, bellini or rickey into something that tempts the eyes and the taste buds. For Gary & Cindy’s October wedding, we devised a VanillaPear Rickey and a Black Walnut Manhattan (see insert) that was the runaway favorite. Start by asking your parents what the trends were at the time they were married. Then ask your Twist mixologist to create concoctions for you that blend the classics with intriguing ingredients. Your guests, young and old, will toast your efforts.

Tantalizing Toasts

Look out champagne, there’s a new sip in town! Instead of passing out tall flutes of sparkling wine that are just begging to tip over, consider mixing it up with a hand-created infusion, homemade sherry or interesting aperitif. For Blake & Ashley’s April nuptials, toasting time came with a customized shot glass full of our icy cold Pineapple-Lemongrass Liqueur. In addition, Twist made sure every bridesmaid and groomsman went home with a bottle of the signature drink to enjoy throughout the summer. Don’t be afraid to kick the champagne tradition and think outside the box. Your creativity will be noticed, enjoyed and remembered.

Let TAPS pour your favorite draft beer and wine from our custom built rustic pub trailer at your event.

Novel Nonalcoholics

Let the creativity flow with your H20! In addition to an original nonalcoholic punch like the Sunriver Sling, (see insert) that was created for Claudine & Michael’s summer celebration, we assembled a beautiful self-serve, water infusion display. Rosemary-Grapefruit, Pineapple-Pepper and Cucumber-OrangeMintare just a few of the flavors we created to make hydration fabulous. Your nonalcoholic beverage selection is an opportunity to highlight your wedding colors and themes.

More Than Just a Vessel

A simple solution to customizing your bar is to use an interesting selection of glassware. Courtney and Erin collected blue tinted, vintage glassware from thrift stores over the course of their year-long engagement, while Kim and Rik chose to use compostable stemless wine glasses as the solution for their picnic style reception. Consider jars, vases, colorful disposables and interesting vintage pieces to make a statement with your glassware. Whether you choose a beer and wine reception, or a cocktail party complete with a full bar and custom cocktails, let your creativity run wild. Let your bar be an extension of your wedding day vision. Branches from blooming trees and berries or adding wildflower pods, succulents, different types of grasses with stripes will help to create some amazing ideas. You can also rent trees and shrubbery from your local greenhouse to create a back drop for your wedding. You can use the same color in varying textures and patterns to create an amazing WOW effect.

Flowers are an essential part of your wedding, sure they look pretty, but they offer much more: The fundamental function of flowers is to create that joyful, romantic atmosphere that transports you and your guests to a romantic place and time. 10 percent of your wedding budget should be allocated for flowers. So if you do not have a very large budget for your entire wedding, then choosing flowers can be difficult. Here are some general budgeting tips to guide you when choosing your dream floral arrangements.

1.

Be absolutely honest with your florist about your budget from the beginning. This will help them pick out some great options to create a floral package that expresses your personality, but doesn’t break the bank. Use expensive flowers sparingly in your bridal bouquets and centerpieces. The cost of centerpieces can add up quickly and your florist will have ideas to help keep the cost down. It is a great advantage to pick a florist from a local garden or nursery. They have access to local flowers and foliage that is at a more reasonable and affordable price.

4.

Don’t be afraid to use plants from your own garden or yard. The key thing to remember is that the flowers match and are in great shape. Use fragrant flowers to give the impression that there are actually more flowers. Some of these high quality perfumed flowers include lilacs, jasmine, lilies, hyacinths, sweet peas and frangipani. I always suggest that you use your ceremony flowers on your head table and buffet tables at the reception. This way you are not paying for flowers in both places. Centerpieces and bridesmaid’s bouquets don’t always have to be flowers. You can use a single rose or fun and sassy colored Ostrich & Peacock feathers for bouquets and candles, lanterns and props for centerpieces. Check with your local rental companies for décor ideas. Save your

flower budget for your bridal bouquet. Consider buying bulk flowers from the local nursery, most florists can give you some great suggestions that you or your family and friends can do.

Choosing Your Wedding Flowers

Relax and enjoy the creative process, schedule an appointment with your local florist to discuss your vision. Your florist will have endless reference materials that you can look at and don’t forget to bring along pictures that you have found. When you are out and about

in your daily life, and you see a flower or an arrangement you like take a picture of it. If you do not know what type of flower it is your florist can identify it. Consider how the flower will fit in; once you have picked your main flowers consider how they will match the bridesmaids’ dresses, linens and other décor. Consider where you want the focus to lie; if you want the focus to remain on the flowers, make your bridal bouquet as ornate as possible. If you want to accent an intricate gown use simpler flowers with strong lines like Calla Lilies, a feminine gown will look best paired with feminine looking flowers like lilies, hydrangeas and roses. Equally, a strong gown will look best when paired with stand alone, elegant looking flowers such as orchids and roses, tying in the entire wedding theme with your vision of beauty. Trust your wedding florist to fine tune your wedding palette and floral theme. Every bride wants to rock their wedding bouquet. The bridal bouquet is the most important flower arrangement; you can achieve vastly different looks depending on your gown, ceremony and reception themes, shape and style of flower as well as the season. So it is worth investing some time into finding what suits your personality. Picking the ultimate bouquet can be challenging. The main factor here is to match your flower arrangement to your gown not compete with it. An intricate gown will need some understated flowers, similarly a simple clean looking gown will leave room for a more bedazzled and bejeweled confection to balance out the look. Bring as many details to your florist as you can, color swatches, venue pictures, your accessories and pictures of your wedding gown. Don’t be afraid to experiment with shape; bouquets come in many shapes and sizes and many pros and cons. The shape of the bouquet can have a huge influence on how the arrangement looks, so don’t be afraid to play around with shapes. Personalize your bouquet, BLING IT OUT. Add some of those more glamorous elements such as, ribbons, lace, pearls, crystals, butterflies and elements of romance “The Ultimate Culilnary Experience” and whimsy, feathers, lace, leather and the very popular burlap. In the end, no matter your color or flower choice, it will be a success, because it was your choice, no matter what you decide it will look perfect! So be true to yourself and your style, put aside all of those things you have heard about etiquette and rules and just let your personality show. Most of all enjoy every moment in this time of your life!

about the person you married.” It was in that very moment that I knew that Kim was the right person to marry. I realized that I wanted to make her happy; to see her smile every day, to make her laugh every day. I wanted to be a part of her family, and my family wanted her to be a part of ours. And thinking back on all the times I had seen her play with my nieces, I knew that she was the one with whom I wanted to build our own family. My father’s advice was both shocking and revelatory. It went against the grain of today’s “Walmart philosophy”, which is if it doesn’t make you happy, you can take it back and get a new one. No, a true marriage (and true love) is never about you. It’s about the person you love— their wants, their needs, their hopes, and their dreams. Selfishness demands, “What’s in it for me?”, while Love asks, “What can I give?” Some time ago, my wife showed me what it means to love selflessly. For many months, my heart had been hardening with a mixture of fear and resentment. Then, after the pressure had built up to where neither of us could stand it, emotions erupted. I was callous. I was selfish. But instead of matching my selfishness,

Kim did something beyond wonderful—she showed an outpouring of love. Laying aside all of the pain and anguish I had caused her, she lovingly took me in her arms and soothed my soul. I realized that I had forgotten my dad’s advice. While Kim’s side of the marriage had been to love me, my side of the marriage had become all about me. This awful realization brought me to tears, and I promised my wife that I would try to be better. To all who are reading this article—married, almost married, single, or even the sworn bachelor or bachelorette—I want you to know that marriage isn’t for you. No true relationship of love is for you. Love is about the person you love. And, paradoxically, the more you truly love that person, the more love you receive. And not just from your significant other, but from their friends and their family and thousands of others you never would have met had your love remained self-centered. Truly, love and marriage isn’t for you. It’s for others. This post originally appeared on ForwardWalking.com, a website dedicated to t imeless designs helping people move forward in life.

e asked. You said yes. And now you’ve got a ring on your finger, a date on the calendar, and one fabulous cake to plan. What do you need to do? Call bakeries to check for date availability, if the date is open, schedule an appointment to go in and check out the designs and skill level of the decorator and taste the cake flavors available. If you are want dessert bars or cupcake trees, find the bakery offering those choices. To ensure that the Cake decorator has enough experience to make the cake you envision, ask to look at pictures of cakes she has designed. Depending on the popularity of the bakery, you may need to call as far as six months to a year ahead to reserve your date. Many specialty cake bakeries limit the number of wedding cakes they do each week. Be prepared to leave a substantial deposit to insure that the bakery reserves the date for you. The taste, flavor and texture of the cake itself are important decisions you will make when you order. The exterior beauty of the cake will be important for your pictures and your personal statement. The cake will be served to your guests so it should be flavorful, moist and delicious. Be prepared to pay the decorator’s time in designing your cake. Simple cake designs are the least expensive because it will take less time. More complicated designs tie up your decorator for an extended time so you should be prepared to pay more. budgeted for your cake so your decorator can help you choose a design that fits your budget. At the reception site, consider where you want your cake placed. Check the walls behind the cake. Will it look good in a photo? Consider the placement in relation to the traffic flow of guests. Decide how you want the cake delivered to the reception site. A friend or family member can pick up the cake for you or it can be delivered by the bakery. If you are planning an outdoor reception, remember that flies and yellow jackets love sweets and the summer heat melts most icings. Floral decorations will wilt when outside for a prolonged time. Rain and wind can cause havoc collapsing tents and blowing table cloths off the table. You should plan for a backup site just in case of the unforeseen extreme weather conditions. After you have selected the right bakery, you can have confidence that your cake will be a delicious memory. If something unexpected happens to the cake (such as a careless cousin running into the cake table), chalk it up as another memory, instead of a catastrophe. It will be a memory that you can laugh about later in life. Your cake should be a sweet memory, delicious and symbolic of the joy of your special day. national average age of the first-time bride is 29 [The Knot]. The majority of brides have a good idea what they are looking for and a general idea of the styles that flatter their body type while keeping within their approximate budget. Another shift is the bride has always been front and center but with brides and grooms getting married later in life, they are making a lot of the decisions together as men are getting more involved. In bridal attire trends we hear the statement quite often “I want something different.” Today’s gowns are coming in romantic color palettes such as champagne, blush, cafes, pearl and even shades of pink. Make your Bridal Gown one of a kind; add a colored sash to the simple white dress, floral and beaded appliqués or a colored petticoat that speak your style and personality. You can change the style of the skirt, bodice or necklines, remove or add beading and lace. The length of the train can be longer or completely removed to fit your style. Tell your Bridal Consultant if you like the skirt of one dress and the bodice of another they can special order it that way for you. S ev er a l br ida l companies are enabling us to order wedding gowns with custom specifications. This is a great option for those brides with measurements that fall outside of the standard size charts. We can change hem lines for the petite or extra tall brides, or switch out a zipper to make it a corset lace-up back, which gives the bride some flexibility even i f she slightly changes in size. These options can greatly reduce the need for alterations; however time is always an important factor in ordering your gown, especially if you want a custom one of a kind gown. www.incredible-events.com

Make sure your gown is here at least three months before your wedding date to accommodate the alterations that may need to be completed especially with most gowns taking around 14-20 weeks for standard delivery. Brides should start the process as soon as possible, for the gown tends to set the pace for the rest of the attire of the wedding. Wedding gowns come in a multitude of styles and shapes; the most asked for style is still strapless with a sweetheart neckline. We are seeing the romantic and classic lace gowns taking a strong lead in our sales. The vintage dresses are still very popular as well. Today gowns have a distinct elegance and timeless charm with a splash of sophistication. Neoclassic columns, dropped waists and slinky sheaths stand out among today’s romantic brides who seek a modern twist on traditional styling. In today’s bridal market more attention is being given to the brides back; from low-cut and lace-ups to delicate buttons and unique cut-outs and keyhole backs. Dresses with illusion backs are very elegant whether it’s a simple sheer look or with beading and lace. This style is perfect for the bride

looking for Elegance with a touch of sex appeal. One of our designers has come out with the Disney Bridal Collection, marking the return of the fairy tale princess ball gown. All the gowns have the name of a Disney Princess. Many dresses emphasize the waistlines with corsets and layers of tulle, lace and/or organza skirts. Fullness is provided by infinite layers and/ or draping. Many of the newest looks feature bold combinations of textures and fabrics with exquisite details such as gemstones, embroidered lace and hand-sewn appliqués. Mermaid or fit and flare gowns can have luxurious fabrics or beaded bodices and skirts. Trends have also gone to a very simple cosmopolitan style with no beading and very simple silhouettes in soft flowing fabrics like chiffon or overall lace. With so many choices available to satisfy the discerning brides during their once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can truly make your wedding dreams a reality. Attention to detail such a veil, headpiece and shoes are also a key trend among modern brides. A lot of girls are going with the long flowing cathedral veiling, or the fun vintage style of the birdcage veils and feathers. Bridesmaids are now being offered in a variety of hem lengths including short, knee and floor length. The new cocktail length is a trendy glamorous look that may be worn again. Bridesmaid’s dresses take around 12-16 weeks to order. It is important to have your bridesmaid’s dresses in at least 1-2 months before the wedding for alterations if needed.

Tuxedos are an essential part of the wedding planning. For tuxedos we are seeing the traditional black and white still being the most common. But, we are also seeing a shift to new shades, such as greys and tans giving the wedding a new trendy look. Vests and ties can be ordered in unlimited different colors and patterns, which allows for the groomsmen to be just as personalized as the rest of the wedding party. You can also match the groomsmen with the bridesmaids. Choosing to shop at your local independent retailer will give you the personalized experienced you are looking for with wonderful customer service that small businesses will deliver. Most brides want to get a beautiful, quality gown, but also want to enjoy the process of finding it. Reality television has changed the way some brides view the bridal shopping experience. It has influenced brides’ expectations, perception and actions. It has also helped brides get a glimpse into what they may expect during their shopping experience. It helps brides to be

better prepared for the emotions, opinions and conflicts that may come up while purchasing the dress of their dreams. Make no mistake, reality TV has delivered tremendous exposure to the wedding industry, but remember that reality TV isn’t the real world and that most brides need to stay grounded and realistic. Stay authentic to yourself and incorporate your own personal touches to make your gown perfect for you. Central Oregon is an area where the majority of the local weddings are taking place outdoors. Whether in a backyard or on a ranch, mountain top or by the beautiful rivers, many are having an outdoor venue. It’s noteworthy to mention that destination weddings have become increasingly more common, in 2012, 38 percent of local weddings were destination weddings. So be sure to allow plenty of time when ordering your wedding gown to accommodate the increasing demand in our local market.
