Daikin leads the way to seasonal eďŹƒciency

With European legislation* pressing energy users to drastically cut energy consumption, improve energy eďŹƒciency of buildings and homes, and meet the Commission’s 20/20/20 targets, industry is looking at more appropriate ways to evaluate eďŹƒciency. Thus, the Eco-Design Directive aims at reducing the environmental impact of products in the EU. To that end an implementing measure for air conditioners is under development and it will introduce a new method for performance speciďŹ cations – seasonal eďŹƒciency – in replacement of the current method of nominal eďŹƒciency, which has its limitations. * EPB (Energy Performance of Buildings) Directive 2002/91/EC, ERP - Eco-Design Directive

NOMINAL EFFICIENCY OUTDATED Measuring energy performance is not new to Europe. Such measurements are used to provide consumers with information on air conditioner performance so they can make intelligent choices when purchasing. Present method in place is that of nominal eďŹƒciency, a method, however, with limitations that result in a signiďŹ cant gap between rated and actual performance.

SEASONAL EFFICIENCY IN LINE WITH REALďšşLIFE PERFORMANCE To correct this situation, a more complex calculation method – seasonal eďŹƒciency – is being developed simultaneously in Eco-Design and prEN 14825 (inquiry version 2010). The major dierences between seasonal and nominal calculation are:

20 30 10

90 100 80

50 60 70 40

CAPACITY

Temperature NOMINAL 1 Temperature condition: 35°C for cooling 7°C for heating Does not often occur in reality

NOMINAL

SEASONAL Several rating temperatures for cooling and heating, reecting actual performance over an entire season

SEASONAL

Does not reect partial capacity

‡ Earliest implementation in 2013

NOMINAL

Integrates operation at partial instead of full capacity

BeneďŹ ts of inverter technology are shown

Nominal eďŹƒciency gives an indication on how eďŹƒcient an air conditioner operates at a nominal condition. ‡ DeďŹ nes a better representation of eďŹƒciency: seasonal eďŹƒciency

Auxiliary modes

Capacity

Does not take auxiliary power modes into account

SEASONAL Includes consumption auxiliary modes: • • • •

Thermostat o Standby mode OFF mode Crankcase heater

Seasonal eďŹƒciency gives an indication on how eďŹƒcient an air conditioner operates over an entire cooling or heating season.
