TIFFANY BAKER TABBED MAXPREPS NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Further proving her status as the most highly touted signee in Lady Vol volleyball history, Tiffany Baker has been named the MaxPreps National Player of the Year after leading Hebron High School to a flawless run through the Texas 5A state tournament. The 6-foot-3 senior middle blocker and outside hitter led Hebron High School to a 44-7 record and the Class 5A state title this past season, recording 661 kills, 296 digs and 276 blocks. A First Team All-State selection, she was also MVP of the Class 5A state tournament and earned state player of the year honors from the Dallas Morning News, the Texas Girls Coaches Association and The Gatorade Company and ESPN Rise. Baker, who is already the highest-ranked recruit to sign with the University of Tennessee after being rated as the nation’s fourth-best prospect by PrepVol-

leyball.com, also participated in the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match and Skills Contest over the holiday break. At the top-level exhibition, which was held in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention at the Municipal Auditorium on Dec. 18 in Kansas City, Mo., Baker helped pace Team Shatter to victory with four kills, two blocks and an ace. As a member of the Dallas Premier 17-Mizuno club team, Baker finished third in the gold division and claimed alltournament honors at the 2010 USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships in Reno, Nev. She was also tabbed to the 2010-11 All-Texas Team and the state’s “Most Outstanding Hitter” by LoneStarVolleyball.com. Baker, who signed with the Lady Vols in November, will join the Big Orange program this summer.

Strong offensive effort lifts Bucs past Kennesaw, 80-69

Senior guard Justin Tubbs (Trussville, Ala.) scored a game-high 21 points and junior point guard Adam Sollazzo (Tampa) continued his strong play, as the ETSU men’s basketball team completed a two-game sweep on the road by dropping Atlantic Sun Conference foe Kennesaw State 80-69 Wednesday evening inside the KSU Convocation Center. The win marked the Buccaneers fourth consecutive victory and improved their record to 8-7 overall, 3-1 in A-Sun play. Meanwhile, the Owls dropped to 3-11, 13.

“Getting these two wins on the road was huge for our team,” said ETSU head coach Murry Bartow, whose team is now 10-1 all-time against KSU. “Winning on the road is never easy and we were able to get two on this trip. Justin and Adam continue to play really well and tonight they were very good again.” Along with Tubbs’ effort, Sollazzo scored 13 points and dished out nine assists, while senior guard Mike Smith (Vandalia, Mo) and Micah Williams (Manchester) netted 17 and 16 points, respectively. The Bucs shot 52.4 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from beyond the 3point arc, and out-rebounded the Owls 34-28 for the game. ETSU also committed just seven turnovers.

score 24 points in the first five minutes of play. ETSU led 14-10 with 14:26 left on the clock at that point, and increased its advantage to 28-13 thanks to a 12-0 offensive run midway through the half. Kennesaw State managed to cut the lead to 10 at 35-25, but the Bucs closed out the half on a 5-0 run to hold a 40-25 edge at the break. In the first half, ETSU shot 51.6 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Owls 16-13, while also committing just two turnovers. Tubbs led the way early with 16 first-half points, while Sollazzo continued his solid play with eight points and six assists before in the break. In the second half, an emphatic dunk from Sollazzo followed by another 3pointer from Tubbs put ETSU up 55-39 with 15 minutes left in the game. KSU rallied again to cut the lead to nine at 62-53 with just nine minutes remaining. ETSU responded at that point with an 80 run to push the lead back to 70-53 with just over five minutes left on the clock. The Owls made one, last desperation run in the final minutes but was never able to get closer than 12 points. For Kennesaw State, Spencer Dixon had 15 points to lead the way, while Cummings finished with 12. LaDaris Green and Aaron Anderson picked up 10 each.
