It’s a question you’ll be asking yourself a lot in these coming months. It’s a question your parents will no doubt be asking, too. It deserves a lot of thought; because where you go to college will be one of the most important questions you’ll ever ask yourself. So, where to? Why not a university with an exceptionally close community, where you’ll immediately belong?

A CLOSE-KNIT AND OPEN COMMUNITY Marywood is a Catholic university, but it is a community where all faiths and backgrounds are warmly welcomed. Ours is a positive, inclusive campus, where a common respect and genuine concern for one another underlies all that we are and all that we do. The beauty of our community is not only our closeness, but the campus itself. The Rotunda is part of the Liberal Arts Center. Its historic murals by Roman artist Gonippo Raggi illustrate the history and principles of Christian education.

• Catholic identity • Respect for each person • Empowerment • Service • Commitment to excellence

At Marywood, we’re producing leaders, but even more, we’re producing ethical leaders. Guided by our five core values – we’re helping to shape lives with the moral courage to go out and make a difference in the world.

Our core values at Marywood are central to who we are. They’re integrated into all courses across our curriculum. They’re an integral part of our campus life. They’re spoken here. They’re instilled here. They’re lived here.

AN EDUCATION, AND A LIFE, WITH MEANING Ours is an education with a broader purpose and a deeper impact. Students who come here are committed to serving, and their giving of themselves takes many forms – from service-learning opportunities within our curriculum, to local community service projects, to international mission trips. Service helps us see a world larger than ourselves. It is an opportunity to better the lives of others, and in so doing, we become better, too.

Marywood has been recognized for its exemplary service efforts, by being named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Recently, more than 2,500 Marywood students, faculty, and staff engaged in over 146,000 hours of service.

ALL PINK

A green vegetated roof minimizes water run-off that leads to soil erosion and offers a system for capturing rain to supply water for plumbing.

A large glass façade, where a solid wall of cinder block once stood, has floor to ceiling windows designed to harvest light, limiting reliance on electricity.

During renovation, more than 80% of the building’s materials were recycled back into the facility, including the original gymnasium floor, as well as ceramic tiles from the former pool.

LIVE Chilled beam technology, along with innovative geothermal energy, utilizes water from the flooded mines below to cool the building, making the space more ecologically sustainable.

GREEN Our 115-acre main campus is a national arboretum, one of only four in the country, with over 100 species of trees and shrubs. Sustainability is an integral part of our mission at Marywood. It is, in fact, one of our core values – respect – which includes valuing the earth and all creation. The campus community participates in many green initiatives: • LEED Gold Certified Center for Architectural Studies. • Alternative energy sources, like wind power and geothermal cooling. • Reducing paper consumption. • Sustainable dining initiatives, including recycling, trayless dining, no straws, food waste information, purchasing from organic local producers, and more. • Cook and serve sustainable food products, including 100% certified seafood, cage-free eggs, hormone and antibiotic-free chicken, turkey, and pork, grass-fed beef, and rBGH free milk. • Environmentally friendly transportation. • Reducing waste by printing less. • Recycling old cell phones.

Marywood is a smaller campus, but the opportunities to participate and lead are huge. With over 60 student clubs, a full calendar of campus activities, a continuous offering of service projects, and a myriad of other opportunities inside and outside of class, our students find all kinds of ways to get involved, and ultimately lead.

A very bright, yet inexperienced, student of ours went on a mission trip, and, as happens with every student, returned to campus a changed person. He was determined to continue serving, so he began tutoring one day a week. That’s one example; there are countless others, such as: • A student volunteered at our campus radio station and worked his way up to managing the station.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE AND • A student-athlete joined the soccer team as a freshman and ultimately ended up assisting the coach. • The Student Activities Crew (SAC) plans and hosts campus activities throughout the year. • Architecture majors designed tree houses and playgrounds at St. Joseph’s Center to accommodate disabled children. • Resident assistants serve as peer mentors and program coordinators in our residence halls. • Students present original research at professional conferences. • Students help lead hundreds of community service projects. • Students also traveled beyond their community to five states and two countries to do service on their spring and summer breaks. • Students lead Bible studies and other campus ministries.
