Silent Auction

Badges & Tickets Your badge is your admission. Please wear it at all times.

Booksellers - Green Exhibitors - Red Guests – Yellow Authors - Purple Events are free, except for those where a meal is served, which require advance purchase of tickets: Book Awards Dinner, Tasting Notes Dinner, the Moveable Feast, Children’s Author Breakfast, and Big Buzz Lunch. Please recycle your badge at the end of the show via the recycling bin near the registration desk.

Exhibitor Info

Our floor manager, Michael Petway from Valley Expo, is available throughout the show to help exhibitors. Please find him at the load-in area or call at 815-703-8079.

Shipping

Can’t carry everything home? That’s the joy of the Heartland Fall Forum. There will be a DIY shipping station on the show floor at table #123. Scales, boxes, and tape will be available to all attendees. We asked each bookseller attendee to prepare in advance by bringing your store’s FedEx or UPS account number and shipping labels. If you weren’t able to do this, please use a personal computer or the hotel business center to create an account. There will be no formal shipping service on site, so please come prepared.

4

Our silent auction is conducted for the benefit of the Book Industry Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit that aids brick and mortar booksellers across the country in need of emergency financial assistance. This year, with flooding, hurricanes, and devastating fires, the need is particularly great. Bidding starts on Friday, October 13 at 10:00 am and ends at 3:45 pm. The items up for auction have been generously donated by our exhibitors. A complete list of items is available at the silent auction booth. To participate, visit exhibitors to see their auction items. Look for the green bookmarks on the items. Place your bids at the silent auction booth where the current high bid will be on display. Winners will be announced at 4:00 pm on Friday and must be present to claim their items within 30 minutes, or the item(s) will be awarded to the next highest bidder.

Drinks

Be sure to purchase your drink tickets! Bars at all Heartland events will only accept drink tickets, and will not be accepting cash or credit. You may purchase drink tickets at any time during the show at the registration desk.

IndieCommerce and IndieLite are ABA’s online platforms for marketing events and author appearances, as well as selling books and other merchandise. Both users and non-users are invited to schedule a one-on-one time with program specialist Chanthee Keokhaw to get any of your questions answered. Walk-ins are welcome, but advance appointments are encouraged. Hours are Thursday and Friday, 9:30 am-4:30 pm. Visit Maple to make an appointment. (See Westin map on page 6.)

Voice of the Heartland

Roy Schonfeld began his life in books after a stint in the Peace Corps and graduate school at Ohio State. After some years as a bookseller and a book buyer, Roy was one of Stu Abraham’s first hires when he started Abraham & Associates in 1992. Covering a huge swath of the Midwest representing over 20 publishers, Roy was named Publishers Weekly Rep of the Year in 2008. He has served multiple terms on the board of the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association and continues to contribute to the education program of the Heartland Fall Forum. Cary Loren of The Book Beat in Oak Park, MI, a longtime customer and friend, says, “Roy is that rare creature in the book rep world able to endorse what he believes in, take orders without padding them, and leave an appointment before rush-hour traffic. We will miss Roy and remember dearly all those multiple trips to his car lugging hundreds of catalogs and samples from the bottomless list of publishers he represents.” These award-winning authors weren’t able to be present at the show. Kelly Barnhill, The Girl Who Drank the Moon, Algonquin Young Readers Kate Moore, The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women, Sourcebooks J.D. Vance, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, HarperCollins 9

Shelf-Talker Swap and Book Signing Diversity and Inclusivity

Authors signing books

9:00 pm

Junior Ballroom Foyer Let’s celebrate diverse titles and help each other access creative ways to discover and sell diverse titles. 1. Pick a diverse title you’d like to advocate for. Come to the party with a shelf-talker already written for one of your favorite diverse titles. (If you don’t do this in advance, grab one of the blank shelf-talkers at the door and write one on the spot.) 2. Tweet it. Tweet a picture of your shelf-talker with the hashtag #Heartland17 and #WNDB. That way, you can carry those books and borrow everyone else’s blurbs in your store.

Patricia Hruby Powell Loving vs. Virginia: A Documentary Novel of the Landmark Civil Rights Case Chronicle

Baptiste Paul (author) and Jacqueline Alcántara (illustrator), The Field NorthSouth Books

3. Have fun and mingle. Clip the shelf-talker to your badge and chat with your colleagues about selling their favorite diverse titles. This is a fundraiser for We Need Diverse Books, so please toss some cash into the donation bucket. WNDB representatives will be at this event to share remarks about their beneficial programs.

Thursday, October 12 Membership Meetings 8:00-9:00 am Free Breakfast

ABA Education. Maximizing Backlist: Proven Ways to Market, Promote, and Sell Backlist Titles. A bookstore’s frontlist sales, spurred by

handselling, current events, reviews, and media coverage, are essential. But when it comes to bottom-line profit, backlist titles with proven track records can be an equal, and potentially more manageable, asset. ABA senior staff and board members explore proven ways to market, promote, and sell backlist titles, including a discussion of advantageous backlist terms now being offered by some publishers as well as best practices for successfully managing your store’s cash flow and return on investment. Panelists: Dan Cullen, American Booksellers Association, Kris Kleindienst, Left Bank Books (St. Louis, MO)
