Hello Fellow Angus Breeders and Enthusiasts,

As an organization, our two main events for the year are now complete. Our State Sale as reported in the last issue was the first to be held since 2019 and was a rousing success NYAA’s next major event was the New York State Fair ROV show held the end of August. A report will be included elsewhere in this issue. It should be said that it also was a very successful event.

Annual production sales held by NYAA members are in full swing around the state. As of this writing, I just returned home from the annual Trowbridge Sale. As I have heard reports about other sales, the demand for our Angus cattle is strong. There are more sales to come yet this fall, bringing buyers additional opportunities to either begin their herd or add to it with some very fine breeding of NY Angus cattle.

In August my family participated in the NY State Fair I was struck by the efforts put in by so many of our membership to properly present their animals. Each family or farm had a system. My wife, daughter and I have our own system. Typically, when we arrive at a show or fair, we seem to know what needs to be done. The only conversation that takes place usually revolves around what time are we starting in the morning. We are typically early starters, it doesn’t mean it is the right way, it is just how we do things. I like to observe others and how they do things. One family had two people taking care of eight or nine head. They have shown together for years and their system works. They make it look easy, even though it is not. Others didn’t have the kinks worked out of their systems, but by the end of their time there, significant improvement was obvious.

This brings me to your operation at home. Whatever that operation may entail, we all have a system to manage it We may not think of it that way, but there is a system or process for everything we do in life Our system at King’s Angus Farm in going to shows and fairs didn’t just happen. We have been at this for many years. It is constantly changing, trying to improve. We evaluate what we are doing and find out if there is a way to do it better or more efficiently. In all aspects of our lives and our businesses, a constant evaluation of our systems and processes needs to take place. If we don’t constantly improve, we fall behind. I encourage all of you to look at what you are doing within your own operation, to evaluate your systems and processes and look for opportunities to improve.

With all of that said, it is my intention to have the NY Angus Board do the same. What are the processes we use to assist our members? Are there opportunities to change what we are doing or add to what we can do to assist our members? If you as a member have thoughts or ideas, please share them with your Board Members. Until next issue, be well and if there is anything we can do for you, or you can do for the Association, please reach out to us

Sale

Angus Hill Farm Production Sale

This year’s addition of the Angus Hill Farm Production Sale once again was a rousing success. Among the offering were eight bulls which averaged $5281.00. Fifty five female lots averaged $11,951.00. In total, sixty three lots of the country’s highest indexed cattle crossed the shavings for an average of $11,104.00 per lot for a gross total of $699,600.00.

The highlight of the offering this year was Lot #2, B&B Rita 0184, the second high ranking $C daughter of E W A Peyton 642 in the country. She stems from a dam that combines the Pathfinder sires G A R Sure Fire and G A R Sunrise and was consigned by the sale hosts and Big Timber Angus, Lithia, FL. With her unique combination of calving ease, growth and carcass merit, she was the #1 $C among only three females in the entire Angus database at that level. Selling open and ready to flush, she sold for $135,000.00 to Johnson Angus Ranch, Durham, CT.

Other open heifers bringing top prices include Lot 1AX, AH/B I G Deadwood F169 4158, a Poss Deadwood May ’22 model for $22,000 to Butz Hill Angus, Cedar Rapids, IA. Lot 5A, A H Cavalry 5306 4058 an October ’21 WAR Cavalry B063 Z044 daughter also brought $22,000.00 finding a new home with Kern Cattle, San Jacinto, CA.

Among the bred cows, Lot #1 fetched the highest price of the day at $57,750.00. A Gardens Cache three year old, G A R Cache F169 sold due in January to J 3 Angus, Wernersville, PA. She was consigned by the sale hosts and Big Timber Angus.

Several Pregnancy offerings were included in this year’s sale. High seller was Lot 2A, a Williams Hollywood 700 380 pregnancy from the sale topping Lot #2. This offering was purchased by Butz Hill Angus for $22,000.00. The Basin Jamison 1076 pregnancy from the same dam brought $20,000.00 on the bid from Tuckaway Angus, Bradford, PA.

A special feature of the sale was Lot 6A. With the passing of close family friend, Mike Leary, A H Salvation N1065 4104, a January ’22 daughter of SG Salvation with a $Combined of $359 was sold with the proceeds going directly to the Leary family. She brought $20,000.00 on the bid from Kern Cattle. In future years, Angus Hill will donate a heifer in the Leary name with the proceeds going to a family that is most in need.

Guest consignors to this year’s sale include Big Timber Cattle Company, Lithia, FL; Cheer Up Angus, Higganum, CT; J 3 Angus, Wernersville, PA; Lorson Angus, Jersey Shore, PA; North Wind Farms, Dayville, CT; Tuckaway Angus, Bradford, PA and WGR & Sons, Diamond, MO.

The sale was managed by Parker Friedrich and Matt White with ringside assistance from Reese Tuckwiller, AAA Regional Manager, Delvin Helderman and Jack Hendrick. Handling the gavel was Dustin Layton.

NY State Fair Junior Angus Show / Evie Groom

The New York Junior Angus Association held a very successful show at the NY State Fair this year. The show was held August 28th with the judge being Ms Megan Pelan from Maryland. The Junior Show started off with our Showmanship contest where Evie Groom was named Champion Showman with McKayla Sugg placing in the Reserve spot.

In the Cow/Calf division, Anna King’s pair were named Champion and Evie Groom’s pair named Reserve. Ms Pelan then sorted through the Heifer classes where Adeline Tommell claimed both the Champion and Reserve Champion titles. The last classes of the day were the Bull classes where Evie Groom earned both Champion and Reserve with her entries.

Thank you to each and everyone of our sponsors who helped make this show happen and to our judge Megan Pelan for coming out and sorting through our cattle.
