Corenso public Recycling Center numbers up in 2010 By Carol Davis, member of Citizens for Clean, Green & Welcoming Community

Area residents dropped off more tons of wastepaper at Corenso’s Recycling Center in 2010, helping the company reduce its raw material costs, while keeping recyclable material out of local landfills. Wastepaper drop-offs by the public totaled 1,340 tons, compared to 1,315 tons in 2009. “We appreciate the community’s continued support,” said Tom Janke, President of Corenso North America. ” When residents drop off their wastepaper at our Recycling Center, or the Opportunity Development Center drop-off site, they help us lower our raw material costs. It stays local and we process it to make recycled board for paper, tape and film cores.” In 2008, Corenso North America invested $35 million to upgrade Corenso’s board operations. This increased the amount of 100% recycled coreboard produced from 35,000 metric tonnes per year to 85,000 metric tonnes. No. 12 board machine is now one of the premier core board machines in North America. “With our upgrade came the need for more wastepaper,” Janke explained. “This continues to present a great opportunity for the Corenso Mill and this community. I know there is great potential for substantially surpassing our 2010 number, with citizen contributions alone. And when you recycle by putting your wastepaper out for curbside pickup, all that Veolia collects comes to Corenso as well.” Acceptable items include: boxes, newspaper, magazines, office wastepaper, and cardboard. Corenso operates a Recycling Center at its 800 Fremont Street location. In addition, in 2008 Corenso partnered with Veolia and Opportunity Development Center (ODC) to establish a dropoff site at ODC, along 10th Street. Both locations are closed on Sunday.
