You are a college student and work part-time in the college administration office. The principal has asked you to write a detailed report on the students’ clubs which exist in the college. The report is to be published in this year’s prospectus. You should write about 250 words. To: The principal From: ………….. ………… Subject: Report on College clubs College clubs The college has many clubs for all kinds of people. There are three main kinds of club: sports clubs, faculty clubs, drama clubs and informal clubs.

Sports Clubs These are run through the college department of Physical Education, and cover most of the sports and physical activities you can think of. If you want to meet new people, why not join one of the college teams? There are all the usual sports like football, basketball and rowing, but also less common activities like canoeing or rock-climbing. You can sign up for these in the Student Office.Opening times: Mon – Sat: 10.00 – 14.00.

Faculty clubs Faculty clubs are organised by subject and are a great way to get more involved in your department or explore a completely diff erent field while getting some extra credits on your CV. They are also the perfect way to meet new friends with similar interests. Meetings vary from the Geography club’s weekend trips to the mountains to walk and look at the rock formations, to the Philosophy club’s regular ‘dinner and debate’ evenings discussing some of life’s big topics. Information about these clubs can be found on every faculty noticeboard.

Drama clubs There are three drama clubs associated to the English and Foreign Languages departments, but anyone who is interested can join in. Each year the Drama clubs put on several performances and you can take part in the productions of plays by Ibsen, Lope de Vega or Molière and also in student written productions. If you enjoy being in the limelight (or helping out backstage) then get in touch with the Clubs Secretaries: dramasocieties@uvc.org

Informal clubs The final type of club is the informal club. These are run by students for students and have a huge range of topics. There are clubs for less formal sports, like Frisbee and arts and craft clubs like knitting. The first week of the semester is the time to come along and try out as many clubs as you like, and decide which ones are best for you. With over 200 to choose from, every studentwill find something to suit them whether it’s active, creative, useful or purely social.

Examiner comments This answer is clear and the new students would be informed about the clubs they could join. The style is appropriate for a prospectus, and the use of headings makes it very easy to read. The recommendations are clearly embedded in the answer, although they are not labelled as such.
