Kingly Court Guide to Eating & Drinking

introduction By Sudi Piggot

Pound for pound, Korean chicken wings to Marrakech burgers, there’s never been a better or, frankly, wackier and more exciting time for food in London. No wonder London is now considered the culinary capital of the world, and where many of the most cutting edge food trends get their kick start. So where to go if you’re after a microcosm of what’s tastiest in world cuisine, right in the centre of London? Somewhere informal and buzzy that’s open from early-bird, healthy breakfast to late night cocktails and elevenses to afternoon tea? Not to mention lunch and dinner that really won’t cost the earth? Somewhere that’s a good-looking, characterful hub that is al fresco in summer and cosy in winter too, thanks to its retractable roof? You can find all this and more in exciting food destination: Kingly Court, in the heart of fashion focused, free-spirited Carnaby. Kingly Court is a delectable, carefully curated mix of colourfully painted, highly individual restaurants all opening onto either the plant-filled courtyard or wooden verandas. There’s free Wi-Fi and a central seating area around the courtyard’s tree where you can simply chill out, enjoy a smoothie from Moosh, or just make the difficult decision of where to eat. Kingly Court celebrates the new talent and concepts among London’s ever evolving food scene. Newly opened are Pizza Pilgrims, run by down-to-earth brothers James and Thom Elliott, who started their culinary journey by selling Neapolitan-style, thin crust pizzas out of the back of their 3-wheeler van. Try Señor Ceviche, an exciting Peruvian restaurant which specialise in tiraditos, parrilladas bbq and killer cocktails or The Life Goddess, who prepare delicious, authentic, Greek cuisine. Health conscious pioneers; The Detox Kitchen’s deli offers ultrahealthy salad, juices and nutritionally balanced delights. Absolutely everything is gluten and refined-sugar free, and most importantly, guilt free! Keeping up the health trend is Retreat Café at triyoga, who encourage the premise of healthy living from the inside, out. Here you

can find a variety of exciting vegetarian dishes full of flavour and packed with nutrition, alongside freshly pressed juices and smoothies. For more indulgent eating, Stax Diner is a thrilling new standalone American diner whose temptations include world-famous burgers, waffles and buttermilk chicken, and wickedly boozy ‘hard’ ice cream milkshakes and floats. Or visit Camellia’s Tea House for a sumptuous afternoon tea; enjoy one of over 70 hand blended teas with a slice of cake, fresh scones and finger sandwiches. For those simply wanting to linger over the best coffees in the postcode, Soho Grind, run by a DJ and musician, is an all day and late night Espresso Bar (the evening menu offers aperitivo and sharing plates) with exclusive playlists, yet is not too achingly cool. For something slightly stronger, head to über cool Two Floors, retro nightclub; Disco, traditional restaurant and wine bar; Shampers or cocktail bar and members’ club Bittersweet who specialise in bespoke cocktails. Key to the Kingly Court unique and vibrant mix are specialist, independent restaurants from across the globe, with creative menus and friendly staff who are eager to share knowledge of their cuisine for those seeking an authentic taste adventure. Shoryu Carnaby celebrates the restorative powers of tonkotsu ramen with its milky broth of pork bones and in-house made spring hosomen noodles. Fast Asian noodle bar Cha Cha Moon has authentic dishes including yum buns and Szechuan brisket. Cinnamon Soho serves up celebrity chef Vivek Singh’s palate tingling modern Indian cuisine, whilst Whyte and Brown’s menu is a clever and witty mix based on two key ingredients: chicken and egg, including Scotch eggs, laksa and souvlaki. The Rum Kitchen has authentic West Indian cuisine on the menu, specialising in rum flavoured cocktails, and Wright Brothers Soho not only offer a definitive choice of oysters and shellfish from the Duchess of Cornwall’s oyster farms, but offer fun, “surfboard” tasting platters, including tempura of king prawns and cod with fries, complimented by tartare sauce; a fun new twist on fish and chips! Kingly Court really does add up to an experiential dining experience that satisfies all palates from the most discerning foodie to the unapologetically conventional, and it’s a combination that simply can’t be found anywhere else in London. Once bitten and smitten, it’s impossible to resist returning again and again.
