The Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards & Gala:

You're Invited!

To recognize outstanding achievement and contributions to the arts in South Carolina, the South Carolina Arts Commission annually presents the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards, the highest honor the state gives in the arts. Elizabeth O'Neill Verner achieved an international reputation for her etchings and pastels, many of which capture the spirit of the South Carolina Lowcountry. She was also a teacher, writer and historian. These awards honor South Carolina arts organizations, patrons, artists, members of the business community, and government entities who maximize their roles as innovators, supporters and advocates of the arts. This year, the Verner Awards will be presented at the South Carolina Arts Foundation's Gala, which will be held on May 1, 2013 at 701 Whaley Street in Columbia - a memorable evening to celebrate the arts in South Carolina. A silent art auction raises funds for South Carolina Arts Commission projects. For ticket information, please contact Kathy Gardener at 803-798-6960 ext. 13.

Delve into SC State Museum the turmoil of the battlefield as well as the everyday struggles of both the men and women who lived during the most tragic war in United State’s history. Künstler has dedicated himself to providing authentic portrayals of life during the civil war and through even the smallest details his art brings this tragic story to life. Natural Historic Sites in Lexington County Sites that preserve our natural history are best visited in the winter and spring, when mosquitos and heat are not issues. Heritage preserves are open for public use from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Here are two of our more interesting natural historic places: Shealy's Pond Heritage Preserve covers 62 acres and is centered around an old mill pond and associated wetlands on spring-fed Scouter Creek. County Road 279 crosses the dam of the mill pond, which covers about six acres. A section of the tract is an Atlantic white cedar bog, a stand that’s been there since the early 1800’s, and surrounding the mill pond that supports several rare plant species. This is one of only three known localities for the globally rare Rayner's blueberry which is classified as a plant species of national concern by Heritage Trust. Other rare plants: white beak-rush, swaying bullrush, Collins' sedge, wooly-berry, northern burmannia and Pickering's breweria. Insectivorous plants: yellow pitcher plant, purple pitcher plant, sweet pitcher plant and three species of sundews. Latitude: 33.86 Longitude: -81.238 Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve comprises 460 acres and is located in Lexington County. The preserve harbors the largest sandstone outcrops in the state, the only waterfall in the coastal plain, a swamp tupelo-evergreen shrub bog and a longleaf pine ecosystem. The geology of Peachtree Rock is significant because of the unusual sandstone formations and abundance of fossil evidence. The formations originated when oceans washed over the area leaving marine fossils, beach-like sand and intertidal deposits. The vegetation in the valley near the waterfall is in contrast to that on the dry, sandy ridge above. Mountain laurel, tulip or yellow poplar and maple-leafed viburnum can be seen in the wet areas, while lichens cover the rock surfaces and ferns grow near the creek. On the ridge, pines and turkey oaks dominate the dry soil, which is well drained and poor in nutrients. Overall, more than 245 different plant species have been documented on the preserve.Latitude: 33.828 Longitude: -81.202

Huger, pronounced “YOO-jee”, is definitely not an easy name to pronounce unless you speak French! We named our website “www.hugerstreet.com” with the pronunciation above the logo... just so people new to our area could sound like they’re from around these parts... even with a Boston or Dallas accent! * Gervais Street, pronounced “jur-VAY”, was named for Senator John Lewis Gervais who played a major part in developing our capital. * Guignard Park in Cayce, pronounced “GIN-yard”. The park was donated to the city of Cayce by John Gabriel Guignard’s family after his death. During the late 1700’s John Guignard owned a successful brick-making operation between West Columbia and Cayce on the west bank of the Congaree River. * Chapin, a town northwest of Columbia, is pronounced “CHAY-pin”, and is named for Martin Chapin, founder of the town and lumber mill. *Lugoff, a town northeast of Columbia in Kershaw County is pronounced “LEW-goff”.

Shangri La

Shangri La: a permanently happy land, isolated from the outside world

Our lives are stressful, and we all need an escape - to a place where it’s cool, refreshing and relaxing. Create a space within your home where you can quietly read, pray, write or think. Someplace where you can burn a scented candle for 15 minutes once a day, and just contemplate the flame. This Spring, instead of decorating your home to be more pleasing to those you love or those you entertain, create a space for YOU. Choose a corner of your bedroom (or room with locking door), and be prepared to rearrange the furniture. Put a super-comfy chair there, one that welcomes you and your tushee! Beside the chair, place a table with drawers or a cabinet to hold your relaxation tools... a Bible, a book, pens, paper, candles, sleep mask, earplugs... whatever will take you to Shangri-La! You’ll need a soft-light lamp too. Hang pictures above the area that take you to a peaceful place... the beach, the mountains, a deep forest. Once you have your corner created, make sure those with whom you share your home know that you are off-limits for 15 or 20 minutes a day. A “do-not-disturb” sign helps. If you share your home with pets or kids, keep a sheet or blanket handy to cover your chair when you’re not in it. We suggest that this place is yours and yours alone, and you let everyone know that!

We love the Grayson Chair from Ethan Allen on Harbison - a comfortable loose back and generous seating area ensure it is destined to become a favorite respite.

Not creative? Decorating Den will help you pull your little corner together! Photo Courtesy of Gigi Willetts, Decorating Den

Learn to Garden...For Free! Whether you're a novice gardener or you have an expert green thumb, The SC Midlands Master Gardeners offers a variety of workshops and programs where you can learn some tricks of the trade free of charge! They’re located all around town... visit their website for details - www.gardenlikeamaster.com. Here are this Spring’s topics: Native Plants, Pruning, Adaptive Gardening, Weed & Insect Control in Lawns & Flower Beds, Roses, Getting Children Involved in Gardening, Butterfly Gardening, Organic Gardening, Rain Gardens, Warm Season Vegetables, Tomatoes, and Herbs! 2013 Workshops begin January 18! 54

Green Up While You Clean Up! Let the spring cleaning begin! This year green up while you clean up; no need to dump toxic chemicals into the environment in the name of cleaning. * Mix baking soda, lemon, and vinegar to create a cleanser as effective as bleach * Lemony eco-friendly wooden floor cleaner can be made with 1 gallon of water, ¾ cups of olive oil, ½ cup of rubbing alcohol and 2 cups of lemon juice * Add indoor greenery and skip the chemical air fresheners - houseplants are living air filters and make the air you breathe even fresher - the broader the leaf, the better, like Peace Lilies * Are you still reading the newspaper? Here’s a recycling idea. Nothing gets glass and mirrors cleaner and more streakfree! Simply spray glass with 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar, rub the glass with a dry cloth and then go over surface with newspaper. These spring cleaning alternatives are good for you, your health and the environment! It’s time for another high-octane, art party! Join the Columbia Museum of Art on February 1 and enjoy beer tastings, art projects, interactive art, scavenger hunts, a unique perspective tour through Impressionism from Monet to Matisse as well as musical performances featuring bands from Fork and Spoon Records. With a party-like atmosphere you can engage in art and with the Columbia Museum of Art. Sponsored by The Whig, WXRY and Free Times. Cost is $8 general admission, $5 for members. If you become a member or renew your membership at the party and get free admission! 7-11PM. Columbia Museum of Art, 1515 Main Street. www.columbiamuseum.org. 803-799-2810

HAPPY, HEALTHY COLUMB A Richland County School District’s A.C. Moore Elementary has transformed their campus into a healthy place for both students and staff and created fun and rewarding ways for their students to become active and engage in healthy lifestyles! The “Moore Milers” club was established to motivate and encourage students to become more physically active. Members of the club walk, run, and participate in other fitness activities while training to compete in running events in the community. Simple changes have also been made around the school such as changes to the daily meal plan where healthy food options have become a focus and physical activity breaks have been added in between classes. These breaks or “Jammin’ Minutes” have become part of daily routine, and help to keep kids motivated and moving throughout the day. www.acmoore.richlandone.org.

Fibromyalgia: New Understanding and Treatments Doctors have learned a lot about Fibromyalgia in the last few years. We used to think the pain came from the muscles and/or joints, but recent research has shown that it actually starts in the brain and spinal cord. Central pain pathways have the ‘volume turned up’, making pain more widespread and severe. Fibromyalgia runs in families, but environmental stressors trigger the pain (including work, family, accidents, and even the weather). The good news is that several drugs (both new and old) can help Fibromyalgia pain. Sleep is vitally important since the brain uses deep sleep to ‘reset’ the pain pathways. Call 803788-7884 to find out how Family Medicine Centers of SC Family Medicine doctors can help your Fibromyalgia pain.
