HIGHLAND BEACH The inlet town of Highland Beach is an ultra exclusive oceanside community located along a three-mile stretch of South Florida’s picturesque State Road A1A. Well known for being one of the most wealthiest small towns in the United States, Highland Beach’s main street runs parallel to the ocean along the beautiful tree-lined state road. Highland Beach has only one business that operates within its town limits, The Delray Sands Hotel which is the only grandfathered business in town. No further businesses are allowed to operate according to the laws that govern Highland Beach. Charmingly there is not a single traffic light along the three-mile stretch. Highland Beach is a true residential community with a small population of over roughly 4,000 year round residents, during the South Florida winter season it is not uncommon for the population to swell to an average of 8,500 residents soaking up the Gulfstream breezes and enjoying the white sandy beaches. Highland Beach is not just a safe haven for the ultra rich, the beach also serves as the critical nesting grounds for South Florida’s endangered sea turtles. Every year from March 1st through October 31st the sea turtles come to the shores of Highland Beach and lay thousands of their eggs in nests along the white sandy beaches. Within a few short weeks the hatchlings emerge from their sandy nests and return to the sea.
