on Hein, winner of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year award in 2014, never envisioned himself making a living as the owner of a bakery known for winning a reality TV show twice. But his story — like that of many small-business owners — is proof that sometimes a great idea, a risk-taking spirit and a little bit of luck can come together to make a thriving business. In 2010, Hein, owner of Little Cakes Cupcake Kitchen in Vista, was laid off from his job at a company that installed and

maintained audio visual equipment in high-profile retail stores. Hein said he knew it would be tough to make a living in that industry, and he didn’t want to start another career. Besides, he was never really thrilled about his profession. “It was something I fell into,” Hein said. “I did, however, always have a passion for food and restaurants and baking.” His brother had launched a successful cupcake business in Washington State, and Hein

Nearly 10 years ago, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce opened the Small Business Success Center to offer counseling and training for entrepreneurs looking to start or expand their businesses. Since its launch, the center has helped many business owners find solutions to their problems, offering tools that can help businesses at any stage of growth. Wells Fargo is helping the Chamber ensure that those who are launching small businesses have the tools they need to succeed. A long-time supporter of the Chamber, Wells Fargo has stepped up to sponsor the newly renamed Wells Fargo Small Business Success Center. The sponsorship will allow the Chamber to continue to help small businesses thrive, said Toni Padron, executive vice president and chief operating officer. “This partnership will allow the Chamber to fully realize its vision for the center,” Padron said. “Since we opened it in 2006, the aim of the center has been to offer tools and resources for small-business owners to grow their businesses, create new jobs for the region and help nurture entrepreneurs.”

The Carlsbad Chamber is well recognized for its strong Board of Directors. A few thoughts about successful businesses With all that is happening around us these last few weeks I thought a little perspective might be in order. This is not about the Pope’s visit, politics or who is running for President. These are a few random thoughts about business I have read this week. • Those who enjoy responsibility usually get it; those who merely like exercising authority usually lose it. • There is nothing we cannot live down, rise above or overcome in life. • The easiest thing to be in the world is you. The most difficult thing to be is what other people want you to be. Don’t let them put you in that position. • If you ever think you’re too small to be effective, you’ve never been in bed with a mosquito. Last but not least is a great legend story. The most motivated employees perform “heroics,” which are the kind of above-and-beyondthe-call-of-duty acts of customer service that are embedded in the storied history of Nordstrom. There is the story of a customer who fell in love with a pair of burgundy pleated Donna Karan slacks that had just gone on sale at the Nordstrom store in downtown Seattle. But the store was out of her size, and the sales associate was unable to locate a pair at the five other Nordstrom stores in the Seattle area. The associate secured some petty cash from her department manager, marched across the street to another department store, where she bought the slacks (at full price) and then sold them to her customer at the marked down price. Obviously, Nordstrom didn’t make money on that sale, but it was an investment in promoting the loyalty of an appreciative customer. Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.

LEGOLAND unveils plans for NINJAGO land LEGOLAND California Resort has announced that it will introduce a new NINJAGO land in 2016. The new area that will include a ride that will feature technology that guests have never experienced at any other theme park in the world — allowing a completely immersible experience. Guests to the new area, which opens next spring, will enter the new NINJAGO land through a giant archway behind Imagination Zone leading them into a courtyard where they begin their ninja training. The new land features LEGO building stations, a game to test reflexes, spinners to test balance, Asian cuisine and a new shopping venue. Interactive experiences will test guests’ physical skills, balance and agility before they can prep for their ultimate training session: NINJAGO

The ride will feature cuttingedge technology that enables guests to control the outcome of their adventure through the power of their hand gestures. Through 3D imagery,

as they travel through dojos to master their skills before heading into battle. Riders collect points for their training and battle efforts throughout the ride and scores are displayed when their quest is completed. 4D effects such as heat, smoke and wind are also incorporated throughout the adventure, giving guests the ultimate interactive experience. “I am proud and thrilled to say that this is our 11th straight year of continuous attendance growth and we attribute much of this to our winning formula of providing our guests a family environment filled with fun, interactive experiences that create lasting memories. NINJAGO –The Ride will be the ultimate experience providing interactive fun for all,” said LEGOLAND California Resort General Manager Peter Ronchetti.

Barter once again leading at Datron Art Barter has assumed the position of president and CEO on a permanent basis at Datron World Communications, Inc. in addition to his position as president and CEO of the parent company, Datron Holdings, Inc. “I am enjoying the opportunity to once again work directly BARTER with the team at Datron World to move the company forward,” said Barter, who purchased the company in 2004. “I am also very pleased to announce the recent promotion of Shannon Teem to Vice President, Finance.” Teem has been in a leadership role in the accounting and finance department for Datron World Communications since September 2014. Barter joined Datron World

Communications, Inc. in 1997 as the vice president of finance. After holding various roles within the company, he had the opportunity to purchase Datron from the Titan Corporation in 2004. Art holds bachelor’s degrees in business and finance. Barter is also the CEO of Servant Leadership Institute (SLI), an organization dedicated to training leaders to foster an environment of trust and respect at all levels of their organization. Art has presented his servant leadership message to a wide variety of corporate, government, and non-profit audiences throughout the U.S. He’s particularly effective at inspiring and equipping emerging leaders, CEOs, and executives who want to make a difference in the world.

ViaSat makes deal to offer Wi-fi on Boeing planes

PWI celebrates 30-year anniversary

ViaSat Inc. has entered into a new agreement with the Boeing Company that may soon make allow the Carlsbad-based companies to offer Wi-Fi on the company’s planes. The agreement initiates the evaluation process for airlines to specify installation of the ViaSat in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity system on Boeing Commercial airplanes. ViaSat offers the fastest in-flight internet speeds

Partnerships With Industry (PWI), a San Diego Countybased nonprofit that offers job opportunities to people with disabilities and staffing solutions to local businesses, is celebrating its 30th anniversary at an event that will be held Monday, Oct. 19 at the Grand Hyatt San Diego. The event will feature the “PWI Achievement Awards” recognizing adults with disabilities as well as select

PWI has placed more than 12,000 individuals in jobs since it was founded in 1985. Many PWI clients have been working at their companies for many years. “This is a very exciting time for PWI as we celebrate our 30th anniversary and continue to focus our efforts on the premise that every adult with disabilities who is willing to work has the ability to be an active part of the workforce and society,” said Mark Berger, president and CEO.

Carlsbad firms create collaborative workspaces Innovative companies often attract high-energy, creative employees who thrive in a collaborative environment. To attract and retain such talent some Carlsbad firms are breaking down the cubicle partitions and opening up the workspace to let ideas fly back and forth. Some firms have been using this concept for years. Now developers are creating spaces that promote collaboration, and companies that host transient workers are providing such space as well. “Today more than ever before, it’s important to create a work environment that people want to come to, and that’s consistent with the business’ culture and mission. For us, that means creating an environment that’s fun and energetic, and we’ve done just that,” said Danna Korn, co-founder and CEO of Sonic Boom Wellness, a Carlsbad firm that develops custom software to promote worksite wellness. “Our intergalactic headquarters screams our culture. “It was also important for us to create a collaborative workspace, because ours is a

collaborative environment,” said Korn. “Rather than having cubicles where everyone is siloed, we have huge, open spaces so people can interact with one another. It promotes the cooperative, interdependence that makes us work efficiently with one another.” With the Pacific Ocean on our doorstep and trails interlacing the city, Carlsbad offers numerous opportunities for an active lifestyle. The city calls this Life in Action, because our natural environment encourages an active lifestyle that helps shape our professional lives. Many firms encourage their employees to take advantage of this natural setting because they believe that energy carries over into the workplace, raising the creative bar for everyone.

Cruzan converted the old Floral Trade Center warehouse on Avenida Encinas into a 175,000-square-foot multitenant campus called MAKE. Cruzan is developing workspaces that address this changing work dynamic. The company recently converted the old Floral Trade Center warehouse on Avenida Encinas into a 175,000-square-foot multitenant campus called MAKE. This complex features such amenities as outdoor showers for employees returning from the ocean, which is within walking distance, and racks to store their surfboards. It also offers a café, fitness center, locker rooms and horseshoe pit. “Up until now it’s been the Googles that can afford this

type of creative office space,” said Jim Mandler, property manager at MAKE. “Now we’re providing these amenities in a multi-tenant setting.” To encourage collaboration, MAKE offers an outdoor amphitheater for group meetings, a breezeway with free Wi-Fi and communal seating, and private patios. GoPro, the video camera maker whose brand has become synonymous with an active lifestyle, will soon move into 45,000 square feet of space at MAKE. “What we’ve built is a

platform that companies can come in and convert into their unique space,” Mandler said. “GoPro is building a rooftop deck with an elevator and a mezzanine.” These collaborative design features are being incorporated into office space that people rent daily, and even hourly. “I found there were a lot of home-based business owners who were looking to get out of the house and did not want to deplete their savings doing it,” said Bridget Ayers, founder and owner of Get Smart

WorkSpaces on Loker Avenue East. “We wanted to give them a space that was more professional than a coffee house.” Ayers said she had spent years in a corporate setting and did not want to duplicate that. She runs a marketing company and her work team telecommutes. She saw that when she got them together, the creative sparks began to fly, and she wanted to re-create that vibe for people who work independently. “We looked at some very successful companies and the environment they create, and the workforce is happy because of the space,” Ayers said. “Our space is set up so we have an open work area. We have couches, chairs, tons of snacks. And we will never run out of coffee.” She also provides meeting rooms and shared office space for people who want more privacy. Just as today’s workforce has changed with the times, today’s workplace bears little resemblance to the one of 50 years ago. And Carlsbad’s local businesses are out in front on this workplace revolution.

Symposium explores tech tools for emergency communication The Ready Carlsbad Business Alliance (RCBA) conducted a “Stay Informed, Stay Safe” symposium at the City of Carlsbad Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on Sept. 11. The event was attended by more than 80 representatives from area businesses and agencies. The goal of the symposium was to empower businesses to make real-time decisions during disasters from information provided using today’s technologies. Its focus was on information technologies that help business access essential information in emergencies. City of Carlsbad Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and RCBA CoChairman David Harrison presented a detailed overview of the technologies Carlsbad’s emergency operations center uses to collect, analyze and disseminate information during emergencies. Harrison discussed how Carlsbad’s state-of-the-art technologies were used during the May 2014 Poinsettia Fire and how they would again be used in the event of future fires, El Nino-related flooding or other hazards. He explained emergency notification systems, and how the city uses data media, social media, traditional media and other communication resources to keep residents

and businesses informed during emergencies. Displaying video inputs from the city’s Traffic Management Center’s traffic camera system, he demonstrated how notifications might be coordinated with programmable traffic signals timing to minimize traffic congestion during evacuations. Harrison stressed the importance of all those who work and live in Carlsbad to register for the AlertSanDiego emergency alert system (www.readysandiego.org), to download the regional “sdemergency” mobile app (free through App Store) to their phones, and the importance of businesses to developing a communications redundancy plan for emergencies. Dr. Eric Frost, professor and director of SDSU’s Graduate Program in Homeland Security, reflected on developments in emergency incident notification, and captivated the audience with descriptions of

technologies that will be available in not too distant future. He linked those technologies to the developing El Nino and its potential for heavy rains and flooding in our region later this year. While also emphasizing the role of social media in emergency communications, he explained how smart phones, and other open source tools and visualization devices are changing the way the world operates. He explained how a number of SDSU programs, like the Engaging Epidemics (e2) Project, are at the forefront of global cloud computing-based projects fostering world-wide solutions to catastrophic hazards. He discussed the need for robust databases to facilitate pattern matching to assist in threat and hazard detection and tracking. Frost concluded the symposium speculating about how emerging technologies, like Microsoft’s HoloLens, are changing the world in a profound way. Respectful of the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the symposium was opened by Deb Beddoe, RCBA CoChair and Your Ops Manager founder and CEO, who introduced Carlsbad Fire Chief Mike Davis and Police Chief Neil Gallucci. All three reflected on the great loss and on their experiences and lessons from that tragic event.

New therapies for atrial fibrillation treatment According to the National Institute of Health, most adults have an average heart rate of 60 to 100 beats per minute. Most of the time, you don’t think about how fast your heart is beating unless you’re exercising, feeling stressed — or have cardiac arrhythmia. Cardiac arrhythmia is a condition in which the heart may suddenly start to beat too quickly, too slowly, or with an erratic rhythm. In serious cases, arrhythmias may increase the risk of heart problems and require treatment. The most common type of arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation. Normally, the two upper chambers of the heart (the atria) contract, followed by the two lower chambers (the ventricles), in a steady rhythm. With atrial fibrillation (AFib), the electrical impulses that control this rhythm become irregular, disrupting the atria’s ability to effectively pump blood from the heart. As a result, the heart may beat very quickly, sometimes exceeding 200 beats per minute. In addition to a rapid heartbeat, some people with AFib experience symptoms including shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness or chest discomfort. AFib can increase the risk of stroke. About 30 percent of all strokes in the United States are related to atrial fibrillation. Since AFib prevents the heart from pumping blood effectively, blood can pool in

the atria and form clots; in people with AFib, clots are most likely to occur in an area of the left atrium called the left atrial appendage. If these blood clots travel to the brain, they can cause a stroke. People with AFib have a stroke risk that is about 6 times higher than normal and related to AFib tend to be more disabling than other strokes. Medications such as Warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto and Pradaxa can help people with AFib reduce their risk of having a stroke, by causing the blood to become thinner, thereby reducing the likelihood of clot formation. While these medications can be very effective, some people find them difficult to use or experience unwanted side effects. Warfarin, for example, requires certain dietary restrictions as well as frequent blood tests to see how thin the blood is and whether the dosage needs to be adjusted. Blood thinning medications can cause some people to bruise more easily, as well as raise the risk of lifethreatening bleeding.

Two relatively new, minimally invasive surgical treatments, known as left atrial appendage occlusion procedures, may be options for people who cannot or prefer not to take blood-thinning medications. Both occlude the left atrial appendage, which is where most clots form; this has no effect on normal heart function in adults. One procedure implants a tiny, parachute-like device called the Watchman into the heart. During this relatively short procedure performed under general anesthesia, the surgeon inserts a long tube called a catheter through a small incision in the groin and threads it through a vein up to the heart. The device is then placed in the heart through the catheter. Most patients spend one night in the hospital and can usually stop taking their blood-thinning medications 45 days after the procedure. Scripps participated in the research trials that led to FDA approval for the Watchman, and is currently researching a second procedure uses a device called the LARIAT, which ligates or “ties off ” the left atrial appendage. More than 6,000 farmers work to make agriculture a $1.5 billion dollar industry in San Diego County. Many of our county’s growers operate small family farms, with 65 percent of them harvesting nine acres or less. They have developed a reputation for quality, highvalue specialty crops. Local produce is fresher; local food supports local farmers (who in turn spend their dollars locally). any have heard the quote “A rising tide lifts all boats.” Popularized by President John F. Kennedy, it was originally a motto from a regional chamber of commerce in New England. We think the proverb is a good way to describe the impact that small businesses have on the economy - so we incorporated it into the theme of our Small Business Awards Luncheon, which will be held Oct. 16 “Small Business is the Rising Tide,” is more than motto for us at the Chamber. More than 90 percent of our members are small businesses with no more than 10 employees. We’ve helped many of them launch and expand through the years and this month, we want to honor their success. This special section is a celebration of small-business success. We hope that current and would-be smallbusiness owners find good tips from it to help them grow — or even launch — their businesses.

Four Components of an Effective Business Plan Having a well-thought-out business plan can help a business owner stay focused on company goals and objectives, yet according to a recent Wells Fargo survey, only 33 percent of small business owners said they have a formal, written business BRIAN LEE plan. Technology is an integral part of life. From phones to tablets to personal computers, technology enables us to be more efficient, gives us access to vast amounts of information and lets us live a connected life to others around the world. This information age also gives criminals and countries easier ways to access our personal and professional information. Cybercrime is no longer something to watch in movies, but something that small businesses must take measures to prevent. Data breaches and criminal activity related to technology are cause for concern that require a change. One area to be concerned about is cloud computing. Many companies offer free and low-cost solutions to data storage needs. From Google to Apple to Microsoft, major corporations have created different solutions to meet the needs of small businesses. These solutions can transform processes and reduce costs. As you use these services, make sure that the company you use handles your data in a way that gives you confidence in their security and backup processes. Review the terms of use and privacy policies of every company so that you are aware of how your information is handled and protected. For your part, using strong (complex) passwords are an important part of keeping your information secure.

Another area in technology security to be aware of are email threats. Email is important in our personal lives and in business. It has moved from the desktop to mobile devices such as phones and tablets. This means email is more accessible than ever and can be taken for granted. From targeted attacks to spam and botnets, criminals try many different ways to compromise your information, privacy and

identity. Never open an email that is unfamiliar to you. Also, be very careful with attachments. If you receive an email with an attachment, make sure you know who sent it to you. Also, as a general rule, scan all attachments for viruses and malware before opening it just to be safe. Businesses should have a spam filter on all email servers to reduce the amount of spam employees are exposed to. Your computers need to have a

strong anti-virus program that daily scans for problems. You should also create an email policy that covers these security issues and provides your expectations to employees. Data files are a part of any business or personal life and how you handle them should be done with security in mind. Stored data on hard drives, external drives and network drives are targets for criminals as well. With this in mind, all sensitive data should be encrypted. Many people and companies encrypt all data just to prevent loss of data. Small businesses should assess which employees need access to data and modify user account rights to grant and restrict access appropriately. This gives everyone who needs data access to it while restricting others from information not necessary to perform their duties. Finally, policies, procedures and training are very important to control information security. A data management policy and information security awareness training are key components to ensure your valuable data is handled properly. Schedule periodic policy and process reviews to respond to the changing IT landscape. Information technology should be embraced for its ability to be more efficient and productive. SBA modifies Women-Owned Small Business contracting The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has authorized federal agencies to award sole-source contracts to women-owned small businesses eligible for the Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contract Program. Effective Oct. 14, the rule levels the playing field for women-owned small businesses across the federal contracting marketplace. “Women-owned businesses are growing three times faster than their counterparts, yet the federal government has not achieved its goal of awarding 5 percent of federal contracts to women,” said SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet. “By granting contracting officers this new authority to award sole-source contracts to women-owned businesses, SBA is taking a major step forward in leveling the playing field and supporting our country’s dynamic female entrepreneurs.” SBA will use this new tool to continue to open doors for women entrepreneurs in the federal and commercial contract space. SBA’s efforts include actively promoting women-owned businesses through programs such as ChallengeHER, the Women’s Business Centers and InnovateHER, as well as implementing recent changes to its lending program that have made smaller dollar loans more accessible to women, and creating the online portal, LINC, to ease the process of finding capital to grow or start small businesses. SBA’s WOSB program was implemented in 2010.

He started off using some of his brother’s tested recipes before he started developing his own sweet creations. The skills he developed at his previous job would come in handy as he set off to become a small-business owner. Hein started working for that company when he was 21 and he was able to move up the ladder. When they needed a manager to oversee a small group of employees and a department, they turned to Hein. “It almost felt like I had started a small business within another small business,” he said. “I was able to develop and implement systems.” Hein said he was drawn to the idea of coming in and creating his inventory from scratch every morning. He soon discovered he really enjoyed being a business owner, and while these days he doesn’t spend much time in the kitchen (he has eight employees, about half of whom are full time) likes being able to step back and chart the course for the business, which celebrated its fifth year last month. Hein made the decision to start offering 401(k) plans and other benefits — including wages that may be higher than typical for bakeries — to his workers to make sure that he’s able to retain his best employees. “We have this managing philosophy that everything you do, both good and bad, go into a bank,” Hein said, explaining that he likes to give

his employees regular feedback to let them know if they’re meeting his expectations. If problems do arise, he added, he’s able to address them early on — and not focus solely on the negative actions — so that employees have a chance to correct their behavior. “I have had a lot of success with that philosophy,” Hein said. “It’s all about action, and not taking anything personally. We’re all here, so let’s do the good stuff and not do the bad stuff. I want my employees to know that I’ve got their back.” Hein continues to look for ways to grow his business. He is currently looking at options that will allow him to ship his cupcakes across the country, and although he first refused to do it, has now figured out a recipe for a “gluten not included” recipe (although he can’t guarantee trace amounts). While recent plans to expand into a second store were put on hold, Hein said opening a second store remains a possibility. “We’re definitely floor-toceiling,” Hein said. “We’re just trying to get a feel for what’s the best move.” Hein said he’s thankful to the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce for naming it the Small Business of the Year in 2014, an honor it received for its role in creating jobs, taking risks and for growing its business year after year. Hein and the bakery were recently featured on a webbased commercial from U.S. Bank where he describes what it was like launching his own small business and his idea that being part of the community and partnering with other local companies can be beneficial to all.

This was not the first time Hein and Little Cakes Cupcake Kitchen has been in front of a camera. The cupcake bakery has achieved some fame as a twotime winner of the TV show “Cupcake Wars” a distinction that still draws people to the Vista shop. Hein said he was approached to be part of the show two times, once soon after the business launched, and he turned them down. When the business started, people would often ask them when they would be in the competition. When they were approached the second time they took the plunge. The celebrity aspect definitely helped the business grow, said Hein. “Our sales went up so high so quick, that it was challenging to keep up from the demand that eventually, we had to start learning how to say ‘no’ to customers because we were never going to make promises that we couldn’t keep,” he said. These days, the appearances still bring people through the door as they catch up with the show on Netflix or on reruns or if they happen to see the signage above the door. Now that the furor has subsided, however, Hein can focus on how to grow his business without the spikes in traffic that he got when the show originally aired. “There were spikes, and now we can see what a normal year looks like and what our most busy seasons are,” he said. “It’s still a big part of our business ... people definitely come to us with high expectations as a two-time winner of “Cupcake Wars,” and we work hard to meet those expectations.”

Preparing today’s graduates for tomorrow’s careers In the not-too-distant past, job seekers could pick up the Sunday paper and see the following help wanted ads: PBX operator, milkman, keypunch operator, video store manager, service station attendant, elevator operator, typist, travel agent. How can we be sure that our schools are preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow, not the jobs of yesterday? With technology playing an influential role in society, new career opportunities pop up relatively often. In Carlsbad Unified we are finding ways to match the talents of our students with the needs of an ever-changing economy. We might not be able to teach all the technical content that students must know to fill the next wave of help wanted ads. We can, however, teach the soft skills that lead to success in any industry. California has adopted new curriculum that looks at traditional subject matter through a work-based lens. To synchronize our efforts with this curriculum, the district has taken on the challenge of identifying key attributes that will lead to success for every single graduate. To that end, the following Graduate Profile and descriptors were born. Effective Communicator and Collaborator: Graduates convey their thoughts and

Financial rewards landed in fourth place. This year, all CUSD freshmen will take a strengthsbased assessment to measure occupational interests. This information will be used by counselors, teachers and parents to guide students in making college and career decisions aligned with their strengths, values and interests. The goal is that when a CUSD graduate comes to work for you, they are happy, productive and in a field they love. Clearly, our schools must prepare students who can compete in a versatile economy. Fall enrollment at CSUSM sets new record

Datron boosts college’s textbook library MiraCosta College alumnus Chris Barter and the MiraCosta College Foundation have helped secure a $10,000 grant from Datron World Communications, Inc. to purchase new textbooks for the Oceanside and San Elijo Campus libraries. “All the additional textbooks we’ve acquired through this grant will thoroughly enhance student learning at MiraCosta College,” said Michelle Ohnstad, library operations coordinator. “This program will especially help those students who are struggling to afford textbooks.” The textbooks will be used for numerous courses such as economics, biology, chemistry and history. All textbooks are available for use at both the Oceanside and San Elijo Campus libraries and are expected to circulate about 8,500 times per year. “Students have expressed their delight that we have the newest required editions of these textbooks,” said Ohnstad. “What we have available right now is just the start—more textbooks are on the way.” For more information about the Textbook Reserves Loan Program, visit library.miracosta.edu or call Michelle Ohnstad at 760-795-6709.

The 2015-2016 academic year brings continued growth for California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). Just over 14,000 students enrolled for fall semester classes, which started on Monday, Aug. 31, at the main campus and at CSUSM Temecula. Since CSUSM opened its doors in 1990, this is the largest enrollment in campus history, representing a total increase of nearly 9 percent over fall 2014 figures. Speaking to more than 500 university faculty and staff at convocation—an annual address to campus employees — President Karen Haynes highlighted recent institutional achievements and set the tone for what is to come. “Here, in our 25th anniversary year, we can look forward to a promising and exciting future for Cal State San Marcos,” she reflected. “A future that builds on our proud past but also goes beyond the achievements of yesterday to take full advantage of the challenges that a rapidly changing world will certainly bring our way.” Other updates, new additions and changes for the fall semester include:
