Students have easy access to Pittsburgh’s extensive systems of public, parochial, and private schools—including The Campus School of Carlow University, located on the Carlow campus­—as well as the opportunity to complete student teaching in Ireland. With more than 150 hours of classroom observation and 450 hours of classroom teaching, you will be prepared to handle situations impossible to simulate in a university classroom. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

WHAT WILL I DO AFTER GRADUATION?

This certification prepares you to work with children from birth through nine years of age. Carlow offers early childhood teacher certification in accordance with new Pennsylvania Department of Education guidelines.

Recent Carlow graduates who majored in teaching fields have accepted jobs as:

MIDDLE LEVEL EDUCATION This certification prepares you to work with students in grades four through eight with content specialties in English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.

SECONDARY EDUCATION (TO INCLUDE BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, ENGLISH, HISTORY, MATH, ART) This certification prepares you to teach one or more content areas in grades seven through 12. You major in the content area you wish to teach—biology, chemistry, English, general science, mathematics, or social studies—and are encouraged to prepare yourself in a second teaching area.

SPECIAL EDUCATION This program prepares you to meet the needs of children with a wide variety of mental, physical, social, emotional, and behavioral disabilities in multiple settings. Graduates of the program obtain Pennsylvania Special Education certification in PreK–8, (three years through eighth grade) and/or 7–12, (seventh grade through 21 years of age). *Must be combined with a major in Early Childhood, Middle Level, or Secondary Education. CARLOW OFFERS A MASTER OF EDUCATION (MED) DEGREE IN ART EDUCATION, EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, AND EARLY CHILDHOOD SUPERVISION. STUDENTS CAN ALSO CHOOSE TO GET AN MED WITH CERTIFICATION IN INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST, SECONDARY EDUCATION IN SPECIFIC CONTENT AREAS, OR SPECIAL EDUCATION.
