This years festival is a celebration of coming together, so it’s fitting that we’re mainly ‘under one roof’ at the beautiful Carlow College St. Patrick’s our Festival Campus HQ. Shake off your daily life and and immerse yourself in artistic adventures over our week-long festival. We’ve a brilliant line up in the O’Hara’s Pavilion, featuring The Strypes, Rusangano Family, Stomptown Brass, DJ Kelly-Anne Byrne, R.S.A.G., Emmet Kirwan, Sarah O Gorman and Exiles. In between acts, indulge yourself with all that the Irish Village Markets has to offer. I’m happy to say that Carlow’s world-class visual arts scene features stronger than ever in this year’s programme, with the Hotron ART WORKS Exhibition at VISUAL and Hand Made Magic featuring the work of Daria Martin and Oscar Schlemmer. Further afield, look out for SITE WORKS – remarkable art in unusual locations around Carlow town. Expect video installations from Sinead Keogh, and Brian Hand & Orla Ryan; unexpected public space interventions from Ceclila Bullo, Karl Burke and John Cullen; and Ireland’s internationally renowned Crash Ensemble in concert at the ruined splendour of Duckett’s Grove.

We are delighted to play host to a world festival première with the screening of Philip Glass’s opera Einstein on the Beach. Most of our programme is suitable for families of all ages, but we have highlighted the events that we think younger audiences would enjoy most with this symbol.
For me, the theme of coming together is clearest with our new strand of events that create new opportunities for people of all backgrounds in Carlow to engage in the arts. Emma Martin, the internationally profiled, locally based choreographer is creating The Thumping Heart with local young dancers and musicians. Circus company Extraordinary Bodies (UK) will be working during the festival with community members of all abilities towards creating a big spectacle event for 2018… watch this space. Ondadurto Teatro have worked with Gypsy Communities all over the world and we are happy to say they will be working with our own young Traveller community in the lead up to the festival. Emmet Kirwan will bring his unique skills to a masterclass for young spoken word artists and Carlow Youth Theatre are working alongside Yvonne McGuinness at VISUAL. We have even more events for kids and families this year. Pop-up performances for all the family will feature Pietr Kloon, Professor Plunger, Extraordinary Bodies and Sevesfeathers. The Book Doctors from Children’s Books Ireland will be writing prescriptions for the next books your child should read. And to we have some really fun events that children can join in including Body&Soul hit Sing Along Social, and Mystery Movie - where you get to decide what we screen. We’re proud to say a massive 70% of our programme is free. But of course that doesn’t mean what we offer costs nothing. So we ask you to please be generous with your donations and of course enjoy everything that our ‘coming together’ of 2017 has to offer. We look forward to seeing you in Carlow this June. EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH Philip Glass / Richard Wilson / Lucinda Childs (USA)

VISUAL / Sat 10 - Mon 12 June / 1pm - 5.30pm / FREE but ticketed Widely credited as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the 20th century, this rarely performed work launched its director Robert Wilson, composer Philip Glass and choreographer Lucinda Childs to international success when it was first produced at the Metropolitan Opera, New York in 1976. Nearly four decades after it was first performed, Einstein on the Beach was remounted and filmed, bringing this ground-breaking work to new audiences and an entirely new generation. Carlow will be the first festival audience in the world to see this work publicly screened. Einstein on the Beach breaks all the rules of conventional opera. Instead of a traditional orchestral arrangement, Glass chose to compose the work for the synthesisers, woodwinds and voices of the Philip Glass Ensemble. The piece is mesmeric, visually stunning and non-narrative in form. Taking place over four and half hours, the audience is invited to enter and exit at liberty during the screening.

Children climb on the less than ordinary cows: the plane cow, the angel cow, the bee-cow, the roller cow, the swimming cow, the turned turtle cow, the dancing cow, the skateboarding cow, the musician cow‌ and the tin rocket. In the meantime, parents are milking a lifesize cow, giving out the power necessary to make the carousel rotating.

Known for his distinct and only mildly accented interview technique this roving reporter gently and painlessly ambushes festival-goers with inane and probing questions in his ongoing investigation into the Irish psyche. His European charm and slow wittedness make him a favourite with his many fans of all ages.

An inventive and original show featuring dancing, hair plungers and a bell-playing finale. The Professor is a charming old world rogue with a little cheeky grin and a very large head of hair. Professor Plunger is a non-verbal show using the international language of comedy and music.
5 Festival HQ / Sat 10 - Sun 11 June / FREE This tree will be filled with Haiku poems about what it means to live in Carlow in 2017 from the perspective of our most recent generation. Children who have worked on their Haiku in school are invited to Festival HQ to tie theirs on the poet-tree during the festival.
A fantastic trip driven by the sound of the mooh organ, a unique musical organ including 19 cowbells, mooh boxes and milk tins. Everything put together inside a metallic bull frame in partnership with the French Embassy in Ireland

The Rapture of Hugo Ball is a dark comedy by Creative Explorations staged as a radio show with live music and sound-effects. A satire tracing a performance-artist’s unsuccessful struggle to gain recognition and acclaim in an indifferent world, the protagonist finds himself thwarted at every turn by an arts culture rife with the rivalry of competing egos, choked by academic jargon and administered by indifferent bureaucratic gatekeepers. Though set in the realm of performance art, the tale equally applies to all the creative arts wherein the individual artist has to struggle to establish a viable career.
The show includes Martin’s latest trilogy of 16mm films, Theatre of the Tender (2016); At The Threshold (2015); and Sensorium Tests (2012). Inspired by Martin’s research into a heightened form of physical sensitivity called mirror touch synaesthesia, these works explore the dynamics of actor and spectator, and the transfer of emotion and feeling. VISUAL / Wed 7 June (until 3 Sept / 11am - 8pm during the festival) / FREE Using cartoonish costumes and bright colours in a bizarre exploration of modernity, The Triadic Ballet (1922) by Oskar Schlemmer pushed dance into the 20th century. Described by Schlemmer as a ‘party in form and colour’, in 1970 the ballet was captured in film for future audiences to enjoy. Installed up high in the steeple, Peregrinus responds to the story of a peregrine falcon that nested in the belfry of St. Mary’s Church in Carlow town. Clearing the belfry of unwanted pigeons, the arrival of the falcon at the church led to some addressing it as a ‘miracle’. Through a sculptural intervention, interviews and the gathering of information, artist Cecilia Bullo investigates how stories evolve and mythologies are created. The peregrine falcon’s name originates from the Latin Peregrinus, meaning someone from far away lands, a foreigner with the spirit of travel.
A site-specific artwork, this work involves a number of subtle interventions made directly onto public pathways in a selection of urban spaces located in Carlow town. The work is concerned with the notion of public urban space, architecture, and fundamental to all buildings: the doorway, the entrance. A quiet work, it will be happened upon, walked over and on and is for all audiences.

The Workmans Club, 11 Brown Street / 7-13 June / 11am - 7pm daily (Late night Thurs 8 and Fri 9am till 11pm) / FREE This film installation features Barry, a club kid during the 90s reflecting on the culture of his youth, early 90s EDM festivals and the effect of 90s trance music. The viewer is invited into Barry’s mind where an imaginary meeting occurs between the mythical Greek nymph Echo and a young 22 year old Barry in a German forest preparing for a Trance festival. Installed in the function room of the Workmans Club, this film and it’s throbbing sound track feel at home under the location’s disco ball.

Behind Carlow College, St Patrick’s / 7-13 June / FREE What if we tried to inverse the operation of history and archaeology? What would the layout and function of such spaces be like in the future? We will speculate what the future might hold, beyond the current utilisation of the grounds of Carlow College. The idea is to position a future archaeological dig that reveals a tennis court that overrides the current functionality of the site. Its layout cuts through existing buildings, car parks, side walks etc, to foreground its imagined existence.

This ambitious collaboration commissions and showcases new work from 20 Irish and international composers. A live performance of two of these pieces will be premièred at Carlow Arts Festival to mark the 20th anniversary of the company, who are at the cutting edge of contemporary classical music.

Like a high-wire act, bringing people from diverse communities together can be risky, but it’s also a beautiful thing when done with art and flair. Ondardurto Teatro will be doing just that when they gather a group of local, settled and Traveller young people together for a life-affirming experience. They will have a privileged role in the festival, they will live, learn, take part and share all that happens, learning to share, give opinions and to listen and respect the point of view of others
A 3 day creative exploration workshop with broad community representation, led by members of Extraordinary Bodies - a circus company that believes in Circus for Every Body. We are all ages, disabled and non disabled, and from different backgrounds. We are circus performers and storytellers. This year we are visiting Carlow to look at human value with a broad range of people who live in the town.
Come and join us to see a short performance starting at 4.30pm on Saturday at the Festival HQ featuring representative members of the community. Talk to us afterwards about your own ideas about how we might value everybody. We will be back next year with our show What Am I Worth? featuring people from your community.

The Wolf O’Brien; this film and documentary art work explores the last sighting and slaying of a wolf in Ireland near Mount Leinster in 1786. Illuminating a large glass window pane, you’ll encounter The Wolf O’Brien and his story as evening falls each day of the festival. The work is about scale, extinction, myth and history.

10 Teenage Girls…. bright eyes, breathing the same air, blood pumping together…dancing their hearts out. This Thumping Heart chases through the expectations, anxieties and vulnerabilities of what it is to be a young woman. The dramas of the most potent of life stages distilled into powerful physicality. Created by the dancers together with choreographer Emma Martin, featuring Carlow Youth Orchestra and in association with Carlow Regional Youth Services.
Carlow on Camera presents an exciting, programme of films about Carlow which are preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive. Dating from the 1930s to the present day the programme creates a vibrant social history of the county and a colourful kaleidoscope of years gone by.

It includes Activities of Carlow Town, made by PP Fr Jackie Moran (1935 – ’58); Radharc’s documentary about Pattern Day in St Mullins (1966); Gael Linn’s Amharc Éireann newsreels of the county (1960s); Journeys down the Barrow (1960s) and the elegiac What Remains (2013) co-directed by Carlow filmmaker Tadhg O’ Sullivan and Pat Collins. The programme highlight will be the Irish modern-day première of the recently re-discovered silent boarding-school drama Some Say Chance, directed by Carlovian Michael Farrell in 1935 and accompanied by internationally renowned cellist Kate Ellis.

Old Dublin Road, Old Dooley Motors site / 7-13 June / Free Before I Die is a global community art project that invites people to reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in public. The original wall was created on an abandoned house in my neighborhood in New Orleans after I lost someone I loved. Since then, passionate people have created walls in their own communities and there are now over 2,000 walls in over 35 languages and over 70 countries, including China, Argentina, Italy, Iraq, Finland, India, Japan, and South Africa. Each Before I Die wall is created and maintained by an individual or group of people who are passionate about creating a space for their community to share more with one another. - Candy Chang

Recent RTÉ Music Prize winners bring their riotous energy and award-winning music to Carlow Arts Festival. Exploring issues such as identity and belonging, Rusangano Family deliver a hefty dose of honest double-edged lyricism over skewed soul samples, 808 beats and sliced-up breaks. Wearing their hip-hop and electronic influences proudly on their sleeves, Rusangano Family aren’t an act willing to conform to the styles associated with their respective backgrounds. Instead of struggling with the idea of being different, they celebrate it. Sure the rules are only there to be broken!

Since it’s conception in 2008 musical juggernaut, Rarely Seen Above Ground has taken his tour de force, one man show of sound, visuals and incendiary rhythm and samples to captured audiences around the world. Known to his friends as Jeremy Hickey, R.S.A.G has gained a reputation not only as one of Europe’s most impressive drummers but as a celebrated producer and a talented showman.

THE STRYPES Inspired by artists such as Dr. Feelgood, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and the early Rolling Stones, The Strypes play a no nonsense set of speed blues, mixing reworkings of rhythm and blues classics with their originals. Elton John, Jeff Beck, Paul Weller and Dave Grohl are all known fans of the band. In April 2012 they released a 4-track EP, Young, Gifted & Blue which hit no. 1 on the iTunes Blues Chart and ignited the interest of record companies. The band signed a record deal with Mercury Records (which has since become known as Virgin EMI) in December 2012 where they released their debut album, Little Victories. They have since toured the world, including South America and Japan, sold out Dublin’s Olympia Theatre two times over, and written their follow up to Little Victories to be released summer of 2017.
EXILES Big Beats and Sexy Synths. With influences ranging from Hall & Oates, Tears for Fears and the soundtrack to Lethal Weapon, right through to St. Lucia, All Tvvins and the soundtrack to Lethal Weapon 2. Exiles carefully crafted their four track debut EP Red Lights which was released last year to critical acclaim, with the title track featuring as Dermot & Dave’s ‘Homegrown Hero’ on Today FM, Beat FM’s ‘Play Irish Song Of The Week’, and The Irish Times ‘Song Of The Week’.

Stories and legends from the traditions of the Brothers Grimm, Lewis Carroll and Hans Christian Andersen, are reinterpreted in a noir atmosphere. Is it possible that Little Red Riding Hood has a dark side? And what about the light, sweet, melancholic side of Witches and Stepmothers? This is much more than a show about princesses and heroes. Ondadurto Teatro create an unreal world, where an improbable Mad Hatter and his Carousel of Time bring the audience on a surreal and fantastical journey, passing through stories and legends on a breathless tour with fascinating moving objects, projection, sound effects, spectacular water effects, fire and of course… fireworks!

Blending the sounds of funk and blues with a raucous cacophony of powerful driving rhythms, Stomptown Brass make the most of their impressive 10 piece line-up: 3 Drummers, 3 Trombones, 2 Trumpets, one Saxophone and one big dirty Tuba. An urban street-funk brass outfit from Dublin, with musical roots in the New Orleans tradition of street-stomping horn players, Stomptown Brass have spent the last number of months bringing Dublin pedestrians to a standstill around the city. The band focuses on original material composed by trombonist James O’Leary. Add to this original takes on artists as diverse as Outkast and Brendan Behan and you get a band determined to give listeners something they haven’t heard before. “Locomotive is concerned with the essence of sound, the incommunicable feeling that music can give us when the right notes are played at the right time, and all the harmonics gather into one whole being... throughout Locomotive you can feel the energy and power that Stomptown Brass hold over their music... Locomotive is a boisterous carnival of music that comes across fully on record” - The Last Mixed Tape). ‘With the hot jazz vim and vigour of My Duchess Has A Heart of Gold, Stomptown Brass show they are students of their influences but are not chained or confined to them. Carlow-born, Berlin-based singer songwriter Sarah O Gorman launches her soulful and lyrical debut EP, Concrete Rain Containing four, all-original tracks, and produced by the inimitable David Ayers, Sarah O Gorman’s first EP Concrete Rain is a beautifully-balanced amalgam of blues-pop, folkjazz, acoustic instrumentation and considered lyrics. This is an ambitious release from a promising new artist. Recorded over 5 days in Carlow earlier this year, Concrete Rain’s tracklist spans a set of songs that are both optimistic and introspective, upbeat and slow, offering melodies that stay in your head and lyrics that speak to your soul.
