There was something for everyone at the 17th annual Garlic Festival in Andrew on Saturday, Oct. 10th. The ever popular Amazing Garlic Race was won by the mother-daughter combination of Kelly Peats and Katelyn Yadlowski.

Kids Need A Boost October is Occupant Restraint Month

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP wish to advise the residents of Fort Saskatchewan and Lamont County that the 2015 Alberta Traffic Safety Plan has designated October as Occupant Restraint Month ‘Kids Need A Boost’.

Despite new technology breakthroughs and the evolution of vehicle safety systems, seat belts

remain one of the most important safety features in vehicles. The proper use of a seat belt is the single most effective way to reduce the chance of injury or death in a collision as it keeps drivers and passengers from being ejected from the vehicle.

Seat belts are designed to fit adults, not children!

Children who are under

nine years of age, who weigh between 40 and 80 lbs (18-36 kg) or are less than 4’9” (145 cm) tall are safest in a booster seat.

Without a booster seat, an adult seat belt rides too high on the belly and neck and can cause serious internal injuries in the event of a crash.

Boost up and be safe!

The Town of Bruderheim is proposing to increase the natural gas distribution franchise fee which it charges ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd., for the exclusive right to deliver natural gas to the residents of the Town of Bruderheim and for use of municipal lands for it natural gas lines. The franchise fee applies to all customers that receive gas services in the Town of Bruderheim); and is required to be billed as a separate charge on gas billings.

The current franchise fee is set at 10.00% for ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd. delivery revenues and will increase to 15.00% effective January 1, 2016. For an average residential customer using 120 GJ’s per year, this will result in an annual increase of about $22.06 from the average paid in 2015. The franchise fee currently accounts for approximately $44.13 of the average annual bill.

Lamont County FCSS to host women’s conference Michelle Pinon Editor

For the first time in its history, Lamont County Region Family & Community Support Services (FCSS), will be hosting a fall Women’s Conference on Thursday, October 29th in St. Michael.

FCSS Director Sara Rindero said the Women’s Conference is something board members had wanted to do, and approached her about a year ago with the idea.

Rindero said there are a lot of other FCSS regions that host conferences, and the event falls under the FCSS mandate. She said the conference is a great way to advocate for local women in rural areas and their issues.

Inspirational in nature, participants get the opportunity to listen to inspirational speakers. “It brings together a diversity of women, and focuses on social issues through education.” A couple of the speakers are well known in the region, and Rindero is excited about that as well.

Nadine Stielow and Susan Campbell both live and work in the region, and will offer a great deal of information and inspiration to participants. Nadine, coowner of Thiel’s Greenhouses, will be sharing her knowledge on herbs and how to grow and use

Opinion From Where I Sit: Seize The Day

By Hazel Anaka God willing and the creek don’t rise, by the time you read this, we will be done with harvest 2015. The long, protracted harvest is just the latest in what’s been a season of mixed emotions.

Most areas of Alberta didn’t get enough rainfall during the growing season leading to a declaration of an agricultural disaster by many counties. The rain that did fall was patchy, sporadic, inadequate. When the rain did finally come, the timing was all wrong. It came as people were attempting to combine.

The prolonged cool, wet, cloudy days played havoc with the grain in swaths. It delayed the cutting of standing crops.

Equally important, it was getting to people mentally. Albertans are used to living in ‘big sky country’ with open sunny skies. A lot of us suffer the blues when day after day the weather is overcast and dreary.

When our livelihood relies on a long stretch of good weather, we begin wondering if the sun will ever return.

This impatient soul wants to know what happens next. And when, dammit. Keeping myself available to run a combine precludes me planning my own days and life. I felt like I was on call. And I was.

But of course, there is always an upside.

Despite my inherent impatience, the delayed start allowed me to submit two grant applications for Babas and Borshch well before the September 30th deadlines. Plus do some final reports for previous grants, plus apply to Travel Alberta’s ALTO Award program for marketing excellence, plus travel to Calgary to be part of a videotaping for Travel Alberta.

It allowed me to keep an appointment with a friend on a huge joint project we’re tackling. I managed to make and

keep several medical appointments.

There was time to apply for an Election Day job. It allowed Grady to come for a sleepover and leave me a head cold as a parting gift. There was even time to tackle the reorganizing of my office.

And while I’m not done yet, I am excited and breathing easier.

It also allowed our favourite mechanic to come and do some overdue preventative maintenance on the two aging John Deere combines. It gave Roy time to attend a couple of crucial meetings and do all the moving around of grain, servicing of trucks and getting ready that is usually so rushed.

So what are the lessons learned? Despite illusions to the contrary, we are not in charge of the world. The rain will fall and the sun will shine on God’s timeline. Patience is a virtue and sometimes being forced to wait is just what the situation requires. Wringing some good out of each day is smart whether I’m in the cab of a combine or in the house waiting for the work to begin.

That sounds a lot like carpe diem -Seize the Day, from where I sit.

I don’t often get a copy of the paper so I am not sure about who’s opinions are published. However in lieu of recent events I feel the need to speak out.

If this is the case then Canada and I don’t know how many other coun-

tries are violating this by not allowing the refugees from Syria and other war torn countries in. ...

I think the rights of all humans should come before the sham stalling topic of “national security”. Do your vetting when they get here at the airport... if they come with a bunch of bombs deport them... if they don’t and all of a sudden a “terrorist attack” occurs because of a refugee... shouldn’t we be asking how a refugee came to have the means to put together a “terrorist attack” in the first place?

Dumbing down Canadians To the editor, Who is served by suppressing information?

Discontinuing the long form census means no reliable data collection regarding living conditions of Canadians.

How then to create good long-term policy?

Libraries at Federal ag research facilities (like the stations at Swift Current and Lethbridge) have been closed. Librarians have been fired. Thousands

of books, manuals, journals, and research papers have been destroyed.

Valuable archival papers dating back over a 100 years are moved to neglected basement corners.

This dumbing down of Canadians is happening as we enter a period of climate variability which has already caused political instability. This is precisely the wrong time to fire librarians, send research

papers and books to the dumpsters, muzzle scientists and decrease the knowledge base. Who is served?? Not Canada or the Canadian public.

The 2015 general election is a chance to change direction— both an opportunity and a responsibility for everyone.

Slow response to travel survey puzzles organizers Michelle Pinon Editor

A newly launched travel survey called ‘Making Tracks,’ is having a hard time getting any traction in the Lamont area.

Catherine Kloczkowski, Communications Advisor with the City of Edmonton Transportation Services, stated that of the 1,400 invitation letters that went out to Lamont County, they only have 30 registrants and 20 completed surveys.

“At the moment, it is the worst performing county, and we don’t know why,” added Kloczkowski. “Forty per cent of Lamont residents are receiving invitations to participate in the survey, as is true for every other county, but few are choosing to do so. We would expect 437 completions for a county of this size.”

In an attempt to raise more awareness, an advertisement promoting the survey was published in the Oct. 6th edition of the Lamont Leader.

Kloczkowski said the Making Tracks 2015 Edmonton & Region Household Travel Survey will provide important transportation data for all the 24 member municipalities of the Capital Region Board (CRB), including both the Town of Lamont and Lamont County.

The travel survey is conducted once every 10 years, explained Kloczkowski, and is the largest and most comprehensive source of personal travel data for the region. “The data collected from the survey is shared with all CRB member municipalities and Alberta Transportation, and helps to make evidence-based decisions on transportation projects and services.”

Kloczkowski said only those households that received an invitation letter can participate in the survey. She says that if a household received a letter, and it has been misplaced or lost, participants can email makingtracks2015.ca or call the hotline at 780-652-2442.

Households that complete the survey are entered to win a grand prize of return airfare for four anywhere in continental North America, and a pair of NHL game tickets, an iPad, $50 gift card at local merchants and recreation centre passes. The company that was hired to conduct the survey, R.A. Malatest & Associates, is sponsoring the prizes, noted Kloczkowski.

Pat Tomkow, Chief Administrative Officer for the Village of Chipman, said most of the labour is volunteer based, and that $55,000 was previously budgeted for the project.

Magical miracle wish comes true Michelle Pinon Editor

Wishes really do come true. Just ask Abigail Matthews, an eight-yearold girl from Bruderheim who recently had her wish of meeting Princess Sophia turn into reality thanks to Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta.

Abigail, who was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition just over a year-and-a-half ago, was granted her wish, and she and her family; twin sister Brooke, 12-yearold sister Hailey, and parents Charles and Tammy; went to Disney World in Florida for a seven day vacation.

“Amazing,” was the word most often used to describe the once in a lifetime holiday they went on from Sept. 1219th. The days were jam packed with activities, and for Abigail, it was all about the princesses, and she was able to fill up one and a half books of autographs during the vacation. “We had front of the line service, and that’s why we got to meet so many princesses,” explained Tammy.

Each day, when Abigail returned to the ‘Give Kids The World’ Resort, there would be a gift waiting for her.

vacation. Even though Abigail’s memory is starting to be negatively affected by the disease, Tammy said she still talks a lot about the trip, and brought some of her holiday momentos to school to share with her classmates.

“It was an amazing worry free vacation, and we got to make memories with Abigail and all the kids,” added Tammy.

“Monetary value can’t be put on the true impact of a wish, yet Make-AWish Northern Alberta relies on the generous donations of time, fund-

ing and products or services necessary to make every wish come true,“ states Sophia Birchall, the organization’s Communications and Medical Outreach Coordinator.

Birchall went on to say, “All funds raised in Northern Alberta stay in the region to grant the wishes of local children.

To date, Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta has granted over 800 wishes.

She said the organization strives to grant the wishes of children, ages three to 17, with life-threatening medical conditions to

enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

“Medical evidence suggests the experience helps to make these children stronger, stronger to fight ongoing treatments,” points out Birchall. Abigail’s life and the lives of her family have been enriched by the vacation, and they will continue to do as much as they can, and create even more beautiful memories as they journey onward together.

Haunted Halloween Maze coming to Mundare Michelle Pinon Editor

Ghoulish fun awaits for those seeking spooks galore at the Mundare Haunted Maze Oct. 2325th.

Creator Bob Gratton says the project is all about kids and fun, and it is a great way to help raise funds for the local library.

“The library always needs funds,” adds Bob, who moved to the community a year ago.

Librarian Miranda Peyton nods her head in agreement. The library is always looking at funds to offset operating costs. “We don’t charge for programing,” says Peyton, who heads up PreSchool Story

and Craft Time, The Book Club, PJ Story Time, and most recently, Minecraft Month.

The event will also generate donations, (cash and dry goods) for the Lamont County Food Bank, adds Gratton, who has also helped several other charitable organizations over the years.

Gratton has designed a 1,400 square foot maze that will be housed in the Mundare Recreation Centre over a three day period.

Each room will have a display, and there will be a “little surprise” in store for the Halloween enthusiasts.

Vantage Builders has donated the materials for the haunted maze that will also feature low

lighting and sound system to create the scary ambience to entice thrill seekers.

Gratton, who has created mazes for the Hospital Foundation and Boys and Girls Club in Fort McMurray, the Little Barn of Horrors in Darwell for the Food Bank, and the agricultural society in Evansburg, says people of all ages have come through them.

“Babies up to 100-year-olds!”

Besides being a great way to get in the Halloween spirit, the haunted maze is a great way to support the Mundare Public Library. The maze will be open on Oct. 23rd from 6-9 p.m., Oct. 24th from 1-9 p.m., and Oct. 25th from 1-5 p.m.

Admittance is $3 per person.

Federal Election 2015 - Lakeland Constituency candidates Shannon Stubbs was nominated as the Conservative Party of Canada candidate for the new federal Electoral District of Lakeland on December 18, 2014.

Shannon has lived in Lakeland most of her life.

Raised on a farm near Chipman, Shannon and her husband Shayne reside on the family farm near Two Hills. Shannon has a diverse professional background spanning the private, not for profit, political and public sectors, at both federal and provincial jurisdictions. Shannon also has significant experience in federal and provincial politics, having worked in senior roles for MPs and MLAs. While completing a Combined Honours B.A. in Political Science and English at the University of Alberta, Shannon interned in then federal Opposition Leader Preston Manning’s Ottawa Office in research and communications. She focused on intergovernmental, equalization, democratic reform and First Nations issues. Shannon participated in the organizing committee for Alberta’s 1998 Senate elections and coMCed the Senate nominee election day in Red Deer.

Shannon then worked in the constituency office of former Beaver River and Edmonton North MP, Deborah Grey. She assisted constituents to navigate a wide array of federal government programs and to resolve issues and concerns with the Canada Revenue Agency, Citizenship and Immigration, Employment Insurance, CPP and student loans, Aboriginal Affairs, and other areas.

I am your libertarian candidate in this federal election. I am married with seven children and many grandchildren. I have a masters degree in agricultural economics and taught for many years at Lakeland College in the School of Agriculture. Politics is about how people get along together in a society and libertarian politics is based on the principle of property rights.

Property is your own body and your other possessions. Your right is to decide what to do with yourself and your possessions while being responsible and accountable for your choices. Inherent in this right is the right to defend yourself and your possessions. There is a restriction on this right in that everyone has the same right, so your choices cannot violate the property rights of others. Property right is a natural right. It is not granted, nor can it be taken away. It can be violated. Common ways to violate property rights are enslavement, assault, vandalism, and stealing in all their various forms.

Governments today are contradictory regarding property rights. Governments enact laws prohibiting private persons from violating property rights which is proper and right, while also passing legislation that allows the government to violate property rights.

Our current system of government and its supporters maintain that it is only fair that some services be provided by government. The argument is that we have to ignore property rights and the ends justify the means. Government services and regulatory agencies operate through bureaucracies. The people working in government bureaucracies have no ownership in public assets so there is a tendency for much waste since there is no personal loss. In the private sector, people do own assets and will minimize waste.

Government bureaucracies have no profit motive, no markets to determine costs, no competition to control costs, and so costs are unduly high. Private businesses must make profits with controlled costs and efficient operations in order to compete in markets and stay in business. Government bureaucracies are monopolies with no incentives for customer satisfaction or innovation. Private businesses must satisfy customers and keep their business up to date in order to keep and attract customers. Government tends towards narrow, one-size-fits-all solutions at high cost. Leaving resources in the private sector with businesses operating in free markets with all the right incentives is the most cost effective way to get a wide variety of solutions for the diverse needs and wants of millions of people.

It would take a libertarian government some time to move our tax and regulate economy to a free enterprise, free market economy. It would start with eliminating the waste of tax funds, ending government funding of special interest groups, ending corporate welfare, and ending things like foreign aid which tends to go to dictators and not the people. These measures would allow taxes to be lowered resulting in more private sector investment and the associated employment opportunities. As this develops, people working in the public sector could move to productive employment in the private sector.

Another initiative would be eliminating barriers to small business by repealing legislation which favours big business. Factional banking would be moved to a 100% reserve ratio over time and the practice of using the Bank of Canada to print money out of thin air to cover government debt would be stopped.

Garry Parenteau has an extensive background in public administration and in Alberta’s Métis community. He has served as the Chairperson of the Fishing Lake Métis Settlement, the VicePresident of the Métis Settlements General Council, and from 2004 to 2011 he served as the representative of the Métis Settlements General Council to the federal government in Ottawa.

He also served as the Vice President of Finance for the Liberal Party of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples Commission from 2000 to 2003. Garry is a resident of the Fishing Lake Métis Settlement, and serves as the Settlement’s Oil & Gas Director.

Welcoming his nomination, Garry stated, “I am excited that we had the largest membership turnout in years in support of my nomination. I believe it is important that Lakeland has a strong voice in Ottawa to help support Justin Trudeau’s plan for a better government. I look forward to hitting the campaign trail in the coming days, and building a strong movement for real change in Lakeland this fall.”

Duane is an experienced community leader who is ready to be a strong voice for Lakeland’s priorities in Parliament. With Tom Mulcair’s NDP team, he will work to grow the middle class and build a brighter future. Duane has first-hand experience fostering economic growth while protecting our environment. He is a regional vice-president with the Métis Nation of Alberta, serving on its regional and provincial councils and as VP of the Major Projects Group. He was recently appointed to the Aboriginal Planning and Advisory Committee, which provides recommendations to the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency. In the community, Duane and his partner Colleen oversee Elk Point Elementary School’s cafeteria program. He has also volunteered with the Beaver River Watershed Alliance and the Lakeland Industry and Community Association.

Duane has deep roots in the Lakeland area. His mother’s family has lived here for generations and are proudly Métis. And his father’s family emigrated here from Ukraine in the early 1900s. Duane was born in Edmonton and moved to Lakeland as a young boy, developing a deep love for the area. He lived in Edmonton again in his early adult years and returned home in 2005. Over the years, Duane has worked as a youth worker, plumber, bus driver, chauffeur, cook and delivery driver—jobs connecting with people. He lives with his partner Colleen in Elk Point and is the proud father of two daughters and grandfather of two.

All county residents are invited to bring all types of fire extinguishers to the Public Works building for a check to insure they are in good working condition.

Job Requirements: x Conduct a baseline evaluation of existing perceptions towards elder abuse and inventory of services. x Host/facilitate group consultations to further identify needs and service gaps concerning elder abuse. Include local seniors as in integral part of these consultations. x Link needs to available resources and best practices to arrive at a locally driven response to elder abuse striving to make resources easier to access and more acceptable to do so. x Determine a strategy to educate service providers for a collaborative response to elder abuse. x Complete an evaluation of the project.

Lamont County Emergency Services recently sent every resident in the county a Location Magnet, with their legal location, rural address and GPS location on it. They will help emergency services find you in the case of an emergency, and could be instrumental in saving a life. These magnets are the first of their kind in the Edmonton region, and we are proud to be able to offer them to our residents.

There are many different ways of expressing GPS location, and while to some the coordinates my appear ‘backwards’, please be assured that STARS will be able to find you based on the GPS location on your magnets.
