Lamont athlete takes Alberta Winter Games in stride Michelle Pinon Editor

PHOTOS COURTESY OF DAVE TAYLOR

Lamont athlete Jake Taylor represented Zone 7 in the sport of biathlon at the Alberta Winter Games in Canmore on Feb. 8. Even though he encountered extremely frigid temperatures, the 13-year-old weathered the conditions very well and can be proud of his wonderful accomplishment.

Extremely frigid temperatures made for slow snow conditions for one local biathlete at the Alberta Winter Games in Banff and Canmore this past weekend; but Lamont teenager Jake Taylor took everything in stride and represented Zone 7 in fine fashion. It was three solid days of back to back racing, (Feb. 6-9) and resulted in valuable and memorable experiences both on and off the track. Overall, it was an enjoyable endeavour for the uber ambitious and multi-talented 13-year-old athlete. Father Dave Taylor, who has coached biathlon at the national level, says the winter games are a “challenging format for best performances” with many factors coming into play at the same time. Some of those factors include: transportation challenges, cold temperatures, exhaustion, and fun peripheral activities. “It is a very competitive and tough field, but the Winter Games experience is also about learning and developing to the next level. And most importantly, have fun with friends! They had

plenty of that: opening ceremonies on Banff Avenue, bus rides and making friends with other athletes...” Jake took part in a dance party at the Banff Springs Hotel, hanging out at the candy store in Canmore, and a chocolate milk smuggling contest. Jake’s final race on Sunday morning proved to be his best. It was a sprint race, and he was able to shoot 70 per cent and exhibit strong skiing to move him up to 15th place in the standings (fifth place within his age group). Dave said that is quite an accomplishment considering most of the other competitors are two or three years older than him, and have more racing and training experience. “I am in the development category for biathlon. This is my first season shooting with an arm sling and no shooting rest, so I want to just do my best for the shooting part, and then use my strength in skiing. In biathlon the coaches say it’s simple - shoot clean and ski fast.” Jake has been training for biathlon for the past two seasons, and said he wanted to focus on biathlon at a major event this time. “At the last

Alberta Winter Games in 2012, I raced cross country and got a bronze medal in the sprint, and sixth in the classic distance race.” Jake describes biathlon as a really demanding sport given all the training and technical parts of skiing. “Then you add in the focus and control you need to shoot accurately. It’s a great challenge.” For Jake, who trains with the Edmonton Nordic biathlon group at the Strathcona Science Park, there will be a few more races this season. Then he will be turning his attention and focus training for the 2014 Alberta Summer Games in mountain biking. “With two Winter Games and one Summer Games experience now in the books, Jake has a good handle on what it takes in terms of training, preparation and expectations for these events,” adds Dave, who is with him every step of the way.

Bruderheim volunteers ready to serve up old fashioned family fun Michelle Pinon Editor

Volunteers are the ones who make it happen. While there are numerous events and activities in each community that come to mind, the one at the top of mind is the upcoming Family Day weekend activities in Bruderheim. Volunteers with the Bruderheim Agricultural Society, Bruderheim Fire D e p a r t m e n t , Bruderheim Lions and Lioness’ Clubs, Bruderheim Recreation & Cultural Board, and Bruderheim Moravian Church, will be out in full force to make the

annual event memorable. Things will kick off Saturday, Feb. 15 beginning at 7 p.m. with a teen dance at the Bruderheim Memorial Community Centre. Youth between 13 and 17 years of age are welcome to attend the dance which runs until 11 p.m. Admission is only $5 per person at the door. The bulk of the activities will take place between 1 and 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17. Folks will have a chance to participate in ice cream hockey, 2 X 4 races, foam dodge ball, snow sculptures, and a good old fashioned snowball

fight. Members of Fort Saskatchewan RCMP will be participating in a fun hockey game and there will be public skating at the outdoor rink as well. When you need recharging, you can go and roast a hot dog and marshmallow, and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate. George Campbell will be hitching up his horses and offering sleigh rides to one and all. If you want to keep warm indoors, head over to the community centre where FCSS will be hosting indoor games and activities. If you want to purchase a Sparkle ‘n Glitter

tattoo, proceeds will go to a local charity. To wrap up the day, families can take in the Despicable me 2 movie at the Bruderheim Moravian Church. Judy Koschade, community services liaison officer with the Town of Bruderheim, says Family Day activities have been held in the community for the past three years. On average 75 to 100 people participate in the event. As they say the more the merrier, so circle that weekend on your calendar for some serious family fun!

Members of Lamont town council signed off on a fee for service contract with the Lamont County Region Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) program Jan. 28. Town council authorized its FCSS co-ordinator to spend $20,500 for the following programs: summer camps (four weeks), True 2 You (10 sessions), Parents & Tots (10 months), and Roots of Empathy (10 months). There was one amendment made to the motion by coun. Gail Hrehorets: “that further opportunities can/will be assessed throughout the year by the Town of Lamont FCSS co-ordinator.” The motion passed unanimously. FCSS board chair Trish Macklin was very pleased to have received council’s decision, and added that it was a great outcome.

Opinion Seeing red Red. That’s the only colour my husband sees these days following an extremely painful ordeal with his mobile phone company. When my husband purchased a couple of I Phones this past summer he was ecstatic. His joy was short-lived however, since the company (Bell) did not have our new address and the oversight was not noticed right away. A couple of months went by and he never received a notice or bill. When he did contact the company, the phones had already been deactivated. He made payment arrangements immediately and paid the “amount owing” in full. He thought everything had been taken care of, but he was wrong. In order to get his phones reactivated he was told it would cost $200. He was totally opposed, and argued the point. at great length. In the end his point of view was dismissed outright. Shortly after that conversation the account was closed. Then he learned that in order to have the phones unlocked (to be able to use them with another provider) it would cost another $50 per phone. Caught between a rock and a hard place, he paid the $100. It was an expensive lesson to learn, and one he hopes won’t ring true for other people. Michelle Pinon

Letter to the Editor Time to honour promises to Veterans, says critic Dear Editor, It’s shocking, not only how brazenly the Conservatives are breaking our country’s solemn vow to care for the men and women who served in the Canadian Forces, but how disrespectfully they treat them. The Conservatives are making it harder for veterans to access the support services they were promised by the government. Almost a quarter of the employees at Veterans Affairs are being eliminated and nine Veteran Affairs Canada Centres have been closed. Veterans are being forced to travel further for less service.

Some, including many seniors, will have to drive hours outside their communities to receive face-to-face help. The Tories claim nearby Service Canada Centres will do the same job, yet their teams who deal mostly with everyday government services cannot help because they are not trained to deal with complex veterans’ cases. Furthermore, the Conservative government is failing to support those with debilitating mental health problems like PostTraumatic Stress Disorder because of a staff shortage. To fix it, the Conservatives announced they would hire up to 54 more mental health professionals 18 months ago.

Kerry Anderson Publisher

Then they made the same announcement again last month. Nothing has happened for almost two years because of the government’s own imposed employment freeze. When veterans tried to meet with Conservative Veterans Affairs Minister, Julian Fantino, to discuss problems like these, he stood them up. Then, as they were about to speak with reporters, he finally came by and insulted them, telling them they don’t know what they are talking about. Later, he even called these veterans “dupes”. It was appalling. His disgraceful attitude was typical for the Conservatives, who say they care,

while their actions clearly say differently. We can do better. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has vowed to re-open the closed Veterans Affairs Canada Centres. He will restore a culture of respect for our troops and veterans and strive to provide accessible care to meet their needs. It is high time we honour our promise to those who have put their lives on the line for our country. Sincerely, Jim Karygiannis, MP Liberal Party of Canada Veterans Affairs Critic

Accidental brush with success for Lamont artist Michelle Pinon Editor

Farrell Siemens was one of 325 students at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus awarded scholarships for the 2013/14 academic year. The fourth year Bachelor of Arts student was awarded a total of $950 for Studio Art, funded by the Marion Murray Walters Memorial Award and an Augustana Faculty Fine Arts Award in Studio Art. As far as an interest in the arts, it didn’t come early on or naturally, but later on and by accident. “I actually never took art classes in high school. I didn’t think I had any talent in that area so my extra classes at Lamont High were home ec. (foods class) and band. I started going to university for biology. Because Augustana is a liberal arts campus they require you to take a couple of classes Farrell Siemens outside of your area. I Photo by DJ could have taken a music Photography

course, or drama or outdoor education, but because of all my labs I had to do for biology, art was the only one that fit in my schedule.” Siemens describes her first art class as “scary,” and while Farrell thought she was horrible at it, her professor thought differently, and encouraged her to practice drawing and making compositions at home. “That year I entered two drawings into the annual art exhibition and I had won an award for them, so I put my minor as art and took more art classess. Eventually I switched my biology to my minor and put art as my major. I am so glad I did because through many hours of classes, and even more spent late at night in the studio, I have come to realize that I have become good at art,” explains Siemens. Different artists would offer instruction in her art classes and sculptor Isla Burns definitely made a last-

ing impression on Farrell. “She was so passionate about everything we did, and really created a love in me for sculpture.” Siemens has applied to different Master of Fine Arts programs throughout Canada. While she is not totally certain as to what her future holds, it will always be filled with works of art whether she is doing it as a hobby or a full time career.

At approximately 5 a.m. on Feb. 8 Two Hills RCMP responded to a Break and Enter at the Two Hills Liquor Store. Shortly before 4 am a dark green 1998 GMC Sierra was stolen in the Town of Two Hills by a group of five individuals. The vehicle was then driven to the Two Hills Liquor Store where suspects gained entry through the main door. Twenty-five bottles of liquor with a total value of approximately $900 was stolen and a significant amount of damage was caused to the building. This event closely resembles an incident five weeks prior at the same location. Less than one hour after the suspects fled Two Hills, a gas station was broken into in Andrew, AB, where a vehicle with the same description was again used. Suspects gained entry to the building by smashing a window in the main door, but this time stole a significant amount of cigarettes. It is not yet known if the two

Elk Island 4-H Horse Club members enjoy busy year Submitted by Vanessa King

The Elk Island 4-H Light Horse Club is having a busy year. We are even managing to keep busy during these cold winter months when it’s difficult for us to ride. On January 25 we had a tack cleaning workshop. Virginia Differenz led our workshop and taught us how to properly clean our tack and make it look as if it were brand new. She also told us about about the many types of soaps that could be used to clean our tack. The workshop really

brought us together as Virginia and our leaders helped us learn about older tack and even some other people’s tack. We would like to thank Virginia for helping us learn new ways to treat our tack. Our club also had a public speaking workshop to help the new members of our club who have never done public speaking before. The workshop was open to all the Lamont District 4-H clubs. At the workshop we did exercises to control our volume, enunciate, and maintain eye contact when speaking in front

of others. We learnt how to properly write our speeches, how to do an impromptu speech, and how we will be judged. All of us benefited from the workshop as we also figured out how we could fix any problems or troubles we had when writing our speeches. It hasn’t all been work either! On January 17 we spent a few hours at Lazer Quest. Even our parents took part. Maybe they participated so they could share our pizza? The Elk Island Light Horse 4-H Club will be having a public speaking

competition on February 15 at the Bruderheim Community Centre. This event will start at 10 a.m. The public speaking competition will be open to the public to come and watch. We would also like to let the public know that our 4-H club will be holding our annual tack sale on April 12 at the Lamont Hall from 10am 2pm. If you are looking for some new tack please feel free to come join us. If you are interested in setting up a table please contact Lynsay at 780719-0554, tables are $30.

Virginia Differenz, far right conducted the tack cleaning workshop for members of the Elk Island 4-H Light Horse Club recently.

Soldier versus Camel Spider story wins prize One crisp dark night in Afghanistan, in a tall grassy area, a soldier lays down on the cold, hard ground, trying to sleep through the gun shots, hoping and praying not to be found. The creatures of the unknown lurk, looking for prey and warmth from the harsh Afghanistan night. A nice, plump, two-eyed, eight legged Camel Spider was one of those animals. This Camel Spider was searching for warmth. When the spider crawled over something warm, it decided to sleep there for the night. Soldier Rouche

was asleep, when he awoke from something warm and breathing on him. In an instant, Soldier Rouche pushed the creature off of him because he thought it was a rat. But boy was he in for a surprise! After he pushed the creature off, it just crawled right back on him. This time he turned on his faint hat light just to see probably something no one wants to see when they wake up - a gigantic, fuzzy, brown spider staring at you snapping its fangs freaking him out! Soldier Rouche could tell that the spider was ready to attack any second. The

spider had two beady eyes. Soldier Rouche felt like the spider could see right through him. In a flash, Soldier Rouche cautiously swatted the spider away. “I will never forget the ugly, humungous spider and how it felt on my chest,“ said Soldier Rouche. Soldier Rouche came back safe from Afghanistan, with no wounds, or spider bites. But, he sure had a freaky run in with a ugly spider that he will never forget. And I, for one will never forget the way he described it!

From Where I Sit: Show A Little Love

By Hazel Anaka Having owned a flower and gift shop for nearly sixteen years I grew to embrace a truly dreaded concept: commercialism. Whether people hate this idea because they are principled “green” purists, unimaginative goofs or just plain cheap is hard to determine in some cases. Retailers depend on it for their very survival. We’ve all heard (or perhaps done) the moaning. Christmas is sooo commercialized; Easter is all about selling chocolate; Mother’s Day is a trick to sell greeting cards and run up your

long distance phone bill. But, the mother of all gift-giving occasions; a virtual trifecta plus is Valentine’s Day. Critics claim it’s a retailers’ conspiracy to sell chocolate, flowers, cards AND jewelry. Commercialism gone wild, if you will. Let me just say this. If you’re a love-struck teen who intends to buy your guy or girl a plush bear or (nearly-invisible) gold or silver necklace or a long-stemmed rose, go for it. If you’re planning to buy some expensive technology like a tablet, think again. In fact, if you’re planning to spend money you don’t have on things, run in the other direction. That advice is sound for every age group and income level. Buying a teddy bear or a Porsche you can’t afford is just plain dumb. Credit card debt and overall per capita indebtedness is at an all-time high. In the words of Gail Vas Oxlade: Don’t be a money moron. Does the price tag on the gift (regardless of the

occasion) reflect the depth and breadth of your affection? Of course not. Is the way you treat the recipient hour-tohour, year in and year out a more authentic and meaningful way to express your love? No brainer. So what’s a person to do? Be the stand-up person you know you should be every day and buy the most appropriate gift you can afford for those special occasions. (The recipient and some retailer will thank you!) In our house we don’t buy essentials. If we need it, we get it when we need it. There’s no buying an espresso machine or air compressor for this couple. Yet I know women who love getting appliances. If that’s what works in your relationship, go for it because it shows that

there’s a thought process and awareness of your relationship’s ground rules. If money is tight (and surprisingly it usually is regardless of how much you have) then get creative. There is no shortage of creative, yet affordable ideas on the Internet and in magazines articles. They usually require time, imagination and effort in lieu of money. Giving your partner a massage, cooking a special meal, writing a poem and making a card are some ideas. An at-home movie night and sending the kids to the grandparents, also works. Strolling through an art gallery or having a snowball fight are free. Just don’t let cynicism ruin a perfectly good opportunity to show a little love, from where I sit.

Consider creating a rainwater harvesting system this spring visit save-the-rain.com, where households can calculate their rain collection potential by geographic location and average rainfall. Afterward, homeowners may be inclined to establish their own rainwater harvesting systems. Here is how to get started. • Determine your roofing material. Potable water can be harvested from homes with sheet metal or slate roofing. Clay or adobe tiles also may be acceptable. Asphalt, wood shingles and tar roofs may leach toxic chemicals into the water, making it unsafe for drinking. This rainwater may only be collected to use for irrigation methods or washing cars and outdoor items. • Check gutter materials. Some gutters are made with

[METRO] - Rainwater collection is a way to conserve water that can be adopted by both private homeowners and businesses. Harvesting water during peak times of precipitation ensures water will be on hand during drought or when water restrictions are implemented. Making use of rainwater reduces reliance on underground wells or municipal water systems. Harvesting rainwater also can help prevent flooding and soil erosion. The average homeowner can collect thousands of gallons of rainwater each year. To learn just how much water can be harvested, as well as how many natural resources can be produced from that rain,

lead soldering components. A commercial lead swab test can help you determine if there is lead present in your gutters. At a later time you can choose to replace the gutters if you desire a potable supply of water. • Invest in a collection tank or barrel. A number of manufacturers offer prefab-

ricated rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Otherwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected water. Ensure it is large enough to handle the volume of water collected. • Purchase and install leaf guards. If your home is surrounded by many trees,

you probably accumulate leaf and tree debris in your home gutters and downspouts. Leaf guards will help keep the gutters clear and increase water flow through the water collection system. • Outfit the tank for overflow and water usage. A spigot and hose connection

makes it easy to use the collected water for outdoor purposes. Many rainwater collection systems are designed with an overflow safeguard that will prevent the water from backing up through the system. It will divert the rainwater back out of the downspout when the barrel or tank is full.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
