Elated Mundare students ran towards the doors of their new academic home on Wednesday, April 8. There to greet them were staff, school board and elected officials, who were on hand with big smiles, apples and granola bars for the K-Gr. 8 students.

Grade 6 student Samantha Lefebvre was vibrating with excitement. No, it wasn’t her first day of school, but it was her first day of school in the new Mundare School on Wednesday, April 8th. Lefebvre, along with 177 enthusiastic K-Grade 8 students, were greeted with the same spirit of eagerness by staff, school board representatives, and local elected officials. The students were also treated to apples

and granola bars. Trina Boymook, board chair of Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS), commented on the open, bright, beautiful surroundings as well as the “new paint smell” that permeated the air. “I just came to see the opening of the school,” stated EIPS Superintendent Mark Liguori. “It’s exciting for the kids and the community.” EIPS board vicechair Colleen Holowaychuk was also pleased to see opening day arrive. Principal Tracey

Arbuthnott was over the moon. “It’s for real!” Arbuthnott, who was part of planning committee, was thrilled opening day was finally here. Originally the school was slated to open on the first day of school September 2, 2014. Despite the delays and setbacks, Arbuthnott, was elated, and Jacquie Fenske was all smiles. Also there for the kids and community were members of Mundare town council, including: Mayor Charlie Gargus, Frank Rosypal, Irene Talaga, Mary Greening

and Jaime Burghardt. Representing Lamont County was local councillor Daniel Warawa, who handed out granola bars to the students entering the eastside entrance of the school. Assistant Principal Matt Matheson was more than happy to show guests around before classes started. The first stop was the open and airy library. Next up was the art room that had tons of built-in storage, open spaces and tons of sinks for clean up. Cont’d on Page 2

School Cont’d from Page 1 Having a sound proofed music room was also an added bonus as far as Matheson was concerned. In fact, Matheson said that all of the rooms were wireless. “Now we don’t have to worry about signal strength.” It was easy to get sidetracked in the Grade 5 classroom where teacher Matt McGregor was more than happy to talk about the great “beachfront” view.

With a laugh McGregor said his class had already done a field trip to the wetlands nestled just beyond the playground. “It was like a field trip.” McGregor said he absolutely loves his new classroom. “It makes me excited about teaching. It’s like the kids got my spirits up.” He is also excited to see the students eyes light up in their new environment, and plans to teach and show them all about the world and its endless possibilities. A grand opening for the new school will be held sometime in Crystal Hadley, middle, got her daughter Chantal and nephew Alex settled in October, noted Arbuthnott. to their classrooms.

Opinion Clarification Last Wednesday's front page story 'Wildrose calls for creation of Alberta Columbia,' was indeed an April Fool's Day joke. Wildrose Press Secretary Evan Menzies emailed me last Friday to say there was "some confusion from supporters" about the phony press release. I guess it's comforting to know I am not the only person who gets "taken in" and has the wool pulled over my eyes. I suppose I should be ashamed to admit that has happened to me on more than one occasion. A dose of healthy skepticism is often necessary. As Arthur Conan Doyle stated, "Healthy skepticism is the basis of all accurate observation." A person who is not easily convinced; needs, and often demands to know the basis of information, if thoughts or theories are rational and logical, as well as how to be proven true and sound. Skepticism will surely be required during this election campaign as candidates will be espousing various beliefs and policies in the coming weeks. Voters will have to decide which person, party, and platform is the most desirable, and be committed to putting an X beside the candidate of their choice they feel best represent the Fort SaskatchewanVegreville Constituency. It will be interesting to see what voter turn out will be?, if voters will go with the tried and true in PC blue? Or how appealing will the Wildrose Party be? How will the other parties, (Alberta Party and Alberta New Democratic Party) candidates factor into the equation? It would be really interesting to be able to determine how much visibility, advertising, media coverage, door to door campaigning, special events and public forums will have? As in most things, timing is everything; just who will have the best timing won't be made clear until all of the votes are counted. Michelle Pinon

Letter to the Editor Potholes and flooding woes for Lamont resident Dear Editor, When I moved to Lamont one year and nine months ago, the Welcome Wagon, (Town of Lamont), soon brought two issues to light. One issue was you cannot patch potholes in the back alley because the town will sue you. The neighbours fought this for nine years. I was more concerned about losing the sewer pipe on

a holiday camper. The second issue was the famous potholes in front of city hall, and there was not enough money to fix all of them. Only 80 per cent in the budget. But there was enough money to pay staff to do nothing in wages. The solution for fixing storm drains, and having enough money is: The City of Sherwood Park can steal a whole county

Michelle Pinon Editor

by remaining a hamlet. Let’s have the County of Lamont absorb the Town of Lamont and get rid of one high paid bureaucrat, and the building maintenance for housing the same, and use the money to fix storm drains that will only drain if there is more than nine inches of water on the street. I like the name of Lamont for my mailing address; so a petition for

Tracy Harding Office Manager/ Ad Composition

Bruderheim annexation is out of the question. This is as ridiculous as Turner Valley and Black Diamond having a separate town council with a creek separating the two towns. My house insurance went up $400 to pay for the High River flood. Hope someone will pay for mine! Regards, Alec Babich

Opinion Mundare resident offers information regarding medical marjuana Dear Editor, On Feb 10, 2015, an article was published in the Leader regarding the potential for a medical marijuana

facility

in

Mundare. Many things regarding this discussion bother me, and since people are choosing to believe only what they have read in the paper, I feel it is time to publicly correct, clarify and question some “facts presented. CAO Colin Zyla stated:

“If

the

Federal

Government wants it (Med. Marijuana GrowOps), then we can’t stop it... “Our lawyers were clear that we cannot block the sale or operation of a legitimate business. The latter is true, a good piece of solid legal advice. The question that people should be asking is: Do you want this type of operation located in the

concerned about town tax revenue than anything. I have no problem acknowledging that the Town needs an increase in tax base, as I am sure most residents agree, however, is this the was to get it? Well, Charlie, you will be happy to know that effective Jan 2015, BC has passed legislation deeming these operations as “pharmaceuticals and shall now be taxed as such. This will change some of the taxes from $800/yr (farm status) to upwards of $30,000/yr. This could be why Alberta is being scoped out for operation locations now. Personally I hope Alberta follows suit on the classification, after all, if it is for medical purposes, it is a pharmaceutical operation. So, lets tell the public (and Council) a little more about these operations and how they work. In a nutshell, these

encouraged to contact the Health Canada (HC ) Division dealing with the licensing of these facilities and give them their input, concerns and comments so that HC may consider it when it comes to issuing a license. This Writer found that process very easy to do. Oh, by the way, all that information is FREE, directly from the Health Canada’s FREE website! Perhaps Council was given misinformation prior to making their decision to support such an Operation for Mundare? If so, I put forward to Council to take time to accurately educate themselves directly through Health Canada. Mr. Zyla was far, far off base when he repeatedly stated (in Feb. Council meeting), that “because it was a federal license, zoning and bylaws did not apply. Mayor Gargus, in this article, seems to be more

Mayor Gargus says municipalities should be “in consultation regarding governing of these facilities. As stated already, HC is stating they want input from communities. They have also stated, in their website, that Towns shall be responsible for putting in bylaws and Zoning Regs regarding these facilities, and shall also be responsible for ensuring these are followed. 2014? This was primarily regarding advertising restrictions). A UBC study showed that although it is still a much better solution than previous licensing, there are still issues of concern!. I’ll call them “kinks in the system, still needing ironing out. The major “kink was that when a production facility over produces, excess product finds it way onto the streets in the illegal drug trade, instead of being destroyed as required. (Hmm, wasn’t there something like that happening in Ontario last year? A large multi-million dollar bust out the back door of a large commercial grow op?) Oh no, Charlie, having a facility in Town will not stop people from growing

Some sites grow up to 28 different varieties, each with different levels of THC (which produces the “High) and different levels of CBD (antiinflammatory properties of marijuana). People with prescriptions register with 1 particular grower and all the product is supposed to be shipped, via courier or mail, to the patient. HC regulations state that there are to be no front/back door sales. (Oh, did I mention 12 of the 16 current operations were cited for being in violation of HC Regs already, by the end of

From Where I Sit: Strong Enough

By Hazel Anaka Most of us consider our homes our sanctuary, our safe haven from the world. Home is the one place where we can be ourselves. Pretenses fall away and our authentic unvarnished selves are revealed. We let our hair down, wear our shabbiest comfy clothing, eat standing up at the counter, burp, cry, and fall asleep in front of the TV. Of course those statements are only true if there isn’t some dysfunction or power struggle at play. If a wife is walking on eggshells because

hubby’s fuse is short, she isn’t safe. If a marriage is imploding the kids will feel and fear the impending chaos and hurt. Home will be anything but safe then. It stands to reason that we’re most wrapped up in our own drama. For us, right now it’s whether our garage construction project will be finished before spring work starts. It’s been interesting and expensive making sure that this structure is done right. It will be a thing of beauty and more than one person has suggested a ‘house’ warming party when it’s done. Plus the annual marathon of paperwork prep for our income tax appointment always weighs heavily until it’s done. But how does our home scene stack up against what others are facing? A recent sleepover at Greg and Carrie’s reminds me of the pervasive parental fatigue and nonstop work of parenthood especially when one of the kidlets is only

four months old and both have colds. Or how my mom’s house is suddenly so silent since George’s death. There is the distraction of things that need doing but eventually those give way to figuring out what comes next. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that when someone buys an ad or writes a thank letter to Haying in the 30s in the local newspaper that someone, some household has received that dreaded Big C diagnosis. The lives changed with that news are changed forever. The next weeks and months of treatment and uncertainty cast a pall over the

home and test the resolve and faith of all. As a marriage commissioner I suspect that couples preparing for upcoming nuptials are both thrilled and traumatized in their houses. Oh, sure there’s the whole love and sole mate aspect but what about the colour of the guy’s cummerbunds? Or the seating plan? Or the trial hairdo that flops? Or what about households that are facing job loss, jail time, problem pregnancies, learning disabilities, financial ruin? Or those that planning retirement or launching the last birdie from the nest? Challenges come in all sizes and shapes. Most of

the time none of us would willingly swap our concerns, worries, trials for someone else’s. Because as much they take on an all-consuming life of their own and it

feels like there is no end in sight, it can always be worse. We just need to be strong enough to face whatever it is, from where I sit.

That was just one of the many positive comments Lamont High School Principal Sharon McLean had following the travel club's whirlwind excursion to Italy during Spring Break. Lasagna was Ainsley Lophushinsky's favorite dish. But there was so much more to dish about as Ainsley, and 21 of her schoolmates and teacher supervisors were totally immersed in the culture and history of one of the world's most notable places. It was the first international trip for McLean and the students who left Edmonton during the early morning hours of March 25th. The city of Verona was the first stop, and one of the most popular stops was Venice. "I loved Rome," said McLean, who only wished they had had more time for shopping. Student Stephanie Taylor said the night tour of Rome was her favourite thing. Often, the merchandise and sellers came to the students. "The minute we got off the bus," laughed Ainsley, they were immediately swarmed. "It was

insane." Politely saying no thank you did not have the desired effect, so the students had to be much firmer when declining the persuasive street vendors’ offers. Being Canadian did have a few advantages, however, as they did get offered many more discounts. Jonathan Mallet was very happy about the deal he brokered for a leather jacket. "It's funny. I went all the way to Italy to get a buffalo leather jacket!" Braedon loved the Roman Colosseum where gladiators fought other men and beasts. A night tour of Rome was also very memorable. The Sistine Chapel, Vatican, Saint Peter's Square, Pisa, Pompeii, and Assisi, were just a few more of the places they squeezed in during the nine day trip of a lifetime. For McLean to be in Pisa when they were blessing the palms was also special. Their were many memorable moments during the trip, and for McLean she couldn't have asked for better company. As for advice, these were just some of the words of wisdom: bring toilet paper, and haggling is a good skill to have.

Andrew School celebrates Ukrainian Easter

Grade 5 student Kayden Sumner applies melted wax with a kistka(stylus) to his egg.

PYSANKA EASTER EGG ART SUBMITTED BY ANDREW SCHOOL

Parent volunteers Mavin Kolotylo, near right, and Tammy Evans, far right, dished up smoked ham, Ukrainian sausage, pickled beets, cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs, a variety of cheeses, veggies, paska, (bread), and fruit from K-Grade 12 students on Friday, April 10th during the Ukrainian Easter Basket Lunch. Earlier in the week, Grade 1-6 students practiced the art of pysanky thanks to volunteers Colleen Mascher, Carol Sorotsky and Lydia Yadlowski, who donated their time and supplies as well as Tammy Evans and Sandra Marianicz who donated their time and talents to the creative project.

Mundare resident voices concerns regarding medical marjuana facilities Continued from Page 5 Some residents have even questioned why a plebicite was not put forward? Did you know the Community of Markham, Ont, has a commercial grow-op? The Council passed a zoning bylaw allowing trees and shrubs: to be grown at the closed sugar plant. Local residents were shocked and angry to find out that the “shrubs” were tens of thousands (150K) of pot plants. Had their council been forthcoming and said “discussion about zon-

ing for a marijuana operations.” Residents said they would have attended the meeting to voice their concerns. I know people in Mundare, who, after reading the Feb. article, wish to voice their concerns, so to them and all others, I say, “Go to your local Council Meetings, read the minutes, bring up your questions and concerns (on anything!) and ensure they are answered to your satisfactions. Be involved in the decision making.” (Oh did I mention the Markham operation is privately funded?

Someone who allegedly owns 6 strip clubs.) Maple Ridge, Langley, Abbotsford and other various BC , NS and Ontario communties have passed bylaw and zoning regulations regarding the possibility of grow op applications and licensing win their communities. Some of these include restricting such operation to areas of high odor (ie: near slaughterhouses, mills, heavy industrial lands), agricultural lands only, industrial lands only; certain distances away from houses/schools; strict regulations regard-

ing air quality testing (indoor)/waste water testing/emmissions testing, to name of few. Sycamous, BC apparently continues to have security problems at its facility (according to residents) despite the plant being located close to town. Naniamo’s operation is located near a mill, on the waterfronthardly residential. And Residents in another BC lower mainland town continue to express anger about odor coming from an Operation there. In BC some of the denied licensed applications had started building plants

prior to approval (some spent up to $1 Million prior to approval). If you can’t wait to get a license before investing a million bucks, are you sure you are likely to follow the regs that accompany licensing? Its 2015, and Health Canada is currently trying to find a safe, stable way to produce and distribute marijuana to those who need if for medicinal purposes. These facilities, in limited numbers, are going to be built. Rules and regulations about licensing are going to continue to evolve and change with

public input. Towns have already started to get bylaws and zoning regs in place in the event that they are approached ones that are clear and respectful of the citizens of their towns. By doing this, they are being proactive , not re-active. A public meeting, (with accurate info), on such a hot topic, would have only been beneficial in Mundare. Not everyone shares your opinion on this one, Charlie, as I am sure they do not all agree with mine. M. Van Brabant

Simple precautions to reduce risk of Hantavirus

As spring cleaning season begins, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reminding Albertans to take simple steps to protect themselves from Hantavirus. Hantavirus – a potentially fatal illness that primarily affects the lungs/respiratory system – is caused when humans inhale particles of urine or feces from an infected rodent, which become airborne when disturbed. As such, anyone who disturbs areas of mice or mice droppings can be at risk. To protect yourself and greatly reduce your risk of illness, follow these precautions whenever cleaning areas of mice or mice droppings: ·Open doors and windows for ventilation, and keep out of the area for at least 30 minutes prior to commencing clean up. ·Wearing rubber gloves, thoroughly soak droppings, nests and dead mice with a

bleach/water solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) or a household disinfectant.

·Let the bleach water solution sit for five minutes. ·Never disturb any

droppings, nests or dead mice prior to soaking with this bleach solution. See SeeCLEANING CLEANINGP.P16

This can create dust that can be inhaled. The dust may contain Hantavirus. ·If dealing with significant mouse infestations

or with mouse infestations in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, contact Health Link Alberta (1-866-408-5465) to discuss necessary precautions. Although rare, Hantavirus can be fatal. Infected individuals typically show symptoms one to two weeks following exposure; however, symptoms can appear up to five weeks after exposure. Symptoms resemble severe flu, including fever, body aches, chills, abdominal problems, and severe breathing problems. Any Albertan who has

recently been in an area contaminated by mice and subsequently develops severe flu-like symptoms or difficulty breathing should see a doctor immediately. Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.

When is the best time to pre-plan your funeral? The best time to begin making your prearrangements is NOW, while you’re thinking about it. While some people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may think it’s too early, many people find that prearranging their funeral is smart financial planning and gives them added peace of mind knowing they aren’t leaving this burden to family members. By taking time now to collect cost information and calmly making choices related to your own funeral arrangements, you’ll be protecting your family against the stress of having to make these decisions at a time of extreme emotional distress. This checklist will help you make sure every detail is tended to: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6)

"DiGangi-Deermouse" by 6th Happiness

Peromyscus, also known as a deer mouse (pictured above) is the most populous mammalian genus overall, and has become notorious as a carrier of hantavirus. These mice tend to have larger eyes than house mice, and also often two-tone coloring, with darker colors over the dorsum (back), and white abdominal and limb hair-coloring.

Prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse on the rise Prescription medications can save lives and help people more effectively manage severe illnesses or conditions. When used correctly, medications can provide the help needed to alleviate the symptoms of certain conditions. Too often, however, medications - particularly prescription drugs are used improperly. The results can be dangerous and addictive. Prescription and overthe-counter drugs are safe but only when taken under the supervision of a physician or in adherence with instructions on the bottle. When prescription or over the counter (OTC) medications are not taken according to the instructions provided or used for longer durations than recommended, seemingly safe medications can become problematic. The National Institute

on Drug Abuse says approximately 16 million Americans reported using a prescription for nonmedical reasons in 2010. According to the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities in Canada, they have found a higher incidence of use and misuse, particularly of prescription medications, across the country. Estimates suggest that 13.7 percent of all Canadians will misuse pain medications. The National Institute on Drug Abuse says depressants, opioids and morphine derivatives and stimulants are the most commonly abused drugs. Potential health consequences of many of these drugs can be addiction, increased risk of respiratory distress, slowed breathing, lowered blood pressure, and death. These side effects may

increase in severity when medications are taken in concert with alcohol. It's not just prescription medications that can be abused. OTC drugs, like cough syrup, asthma inhalers, antacids, and sleep aids, also can be dangerous and addictive. While the risks associated with OTC drugs pale in comparison to those associated with prescription drug abuse, OTC medications can affect the liver and kidneys when taken in excess. To prevent medication abuse, follow these few tips. · Do not borrow or share medications. A doctor has picked a drug dose and type for the prescribed person's specific needs. Drugs affect everyone differently, so borrowing from another person can produce adverse results. · Do not mix drugs.

Combining stimulants with cold medication, for example, can cause extremely high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat. Medications should always be used as directed, and a pharmacist or doctor should be consulted if you have a question about using other drugs with the one you are prescribed. · Alcohol and drugs do not mix. Alcohol, a depressant, can exacerbate the effects of many medications. Alcohol also may compromise decision-making abilities, which could lead to overdose of certain

drugs. No matter how safe a drug may seem, it's wise never to take it with alcohol. · Drugs purchased on the street or from unreliable sources on the Internet may not have the same potency or composition as drugs sold at a legitimate pharmacy. You cannot be assured of the ingredients or how they will perform. · Children should be warned about misusing drugs, and medications should be kept out of their reach. Drugs should not be characterized as fix-alls and never

be compared to candy. · Dispose of extra pills after you are done using a prescription. There's no need to save some for later if the condition has been effectively treated. Prescription drugs are now being abused at a higher rate than ever before. Just because they are sold at a pharmacy does not make these medications safe to use in improper ways, and men and women should exercise caution and follow instructions when taking prescription and OTC medications.

Celebrating 100 years of the Canadian Northern Pacific Railway January 23, 2015 marked the centennial of the “Last Spike” of the Canadian Northern Pacific Railway – a historic event that signified the completion of Canada’s third transcontinental railway.

On that day in 1915, an informal ceremony attended only by the workers engaged in the line’s construction was held near Basque, B.C. – which is approximately 60 miles west of Kamloops. See SeeRAILWAY RAILWAYP.P23

RAILWAY Continued from Continued fromP.P19

The Canadian Northern Railway was a unique Canadian enterprise – brought about through the entrepreneurship of its chief promoters - Sir William Mackenzie and Sir Donald Mann. The company evolved from a Manitoba short line in 1896 to a system of over 9,000 miles in seven provinces by 1917. Mackenzie and Mann were dynamic individuals, with a strong belief in the vast economic potential of western Canada. Despite their valiant efforts, the Canadian Northern fell victim to challenging economic circumstances; overexpansion, recession, World War 1, and spiraling costs of construction, that resulted in its nationalization by the Dominion Government in December 1918. One hundred years after its last spike, Mackenzie and Mann’s legacy endures. The Canadian Northern Railway was responsible for the development of hundreds of communities in western Canada, and many of its routes today are integral to Canada’s modern transportation system. Plans to celebrate this important historic milestone are underway. The Canadian Northern Society – a group active in the preservation of Canadian Northern Railway heritage since 1986 is presenting “The Railway King” – a production profiling Sir William Mackenzie – at a Reader’s Theatre Event in Camrose in mid-April. “In addition,” said Leslie S. Kozma, Vice President of the Society, “we are part of a committee working towards a centennial celebration to be held

in Kamloops June 19th and 20th. “Activities and events are being planned for young and old alike, to put the last spike into historic context, and to understand

its lasting impact on the social and economic development of Canada. “Canada’s history is linked to the story of its railways” remarked Mr. Kozma. “The cen-

tenaries of the completion of the Canadian Pacific (1985) and Grand Trunk Pacific (2014) railways have been celebrated – we are pleased now to honour that of the

Canadian Northern.” The heritage railway stations at Camrose, Meeting Creek, and Big Valley, Alberta are operated and pre-

served by the Canadian Northern Society. Further information can be obtained at www.canadiannorthern.ca
