Fall 2011

Greetings,

IN THIS ISSUE

All this talk of fuel has taken our focus off everything else. One area where truckers Tire Systems & Werner Trucking and fleet managers need to keep their eyes on, are tires. Tires are one of the biggest causes of breakdowns that drivers face. This newsletter talks about one of the largest Cottrell Tire Inflation System migrations to self inflating tire systems by a national trucking company and why. We also talk about how this system can be added by car haulers to reduce risk and A Different Way Of Looking At It improve performance. Then we end the newsletter talking about (you guessed it)...fuel issues. Sincerely, Michael Saks Editor of Haulin msaks@ectts.com

There is an old saying I once read, 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.' Werner trucking is focusing on that ounce. In a climate of increasing safety standards, tire price increases, and litigation, the company is outfitting 24,000 of their vans with tire inflation systems at a cost of about $1000 each. This price includes the installation by a third party and the cost of the system. The question then is raised, what could be so lucrative that Werner would invest $2.4 million dollars. I have an answer:

Because The Cost Of Under Inflated Tires Will Cost Them Ten Times As Much

I read that the company could not quantify the exact amount saved, so naturally I will take a stab at it. The American Trucking Association says that under inflated tires cost between $600 to $800 in added costs per truck. As far as finding out the averages the ATA estimates: 7% of tires are under inflated by 20psi or more 56% of tires are NOT within 5 psi of their target amount So in a fleet of 24,000, a 7% occurrence of under inflated tires costs $1,008,000 to $1,344,000 in tire related issues. The ATA says that over half of all trucks are under inflated. If you apply that number, the tire related issues were costing well over ten million dollars a year. The odds are the number is somewhere between $1 million to $10 million a year. This alone pays the cost of the tire inflation system well within 1 to 2 years, if not sooner. There are a host of other benefits which are worth mentioning. Accidents caused by inadequate tire pressure are virtually eliminated. Any lawsuits, insurance increases, and CSA points are now a non issue. The tire inflation system shows commitment to public safety and driver safety. Less fuel use means less pollution. Finally, the loss of revenue that can occur due to a breakdown or tire related accident is now gone. Read More At: http://truckinginfo.com/trailer-talk/detail.asp?news_id=75060&news_category_id=114

Car haulers, we mentioned that Cottrell offers a tire inflation system of their own. If you look at the costs involved in under inflated tires, you can see that a Cottrell tire inflation system will pay for itself well within 2 years. You can order this on a new trailer or have Cottrell retrofit your current vehicle.

I just read an article about some of the limitations of natural gas as an alternative fuel. The article talked about the fact that natural gas may never be used as a mainstream fuel by the trucking industry or cars. While municipalities can use liquid natural gas for busses and garbage trucks, the

vast majority of drivers will not adapt natural gas as a replacement for fossil fuel. So I say:

SO WHAT...

Natural Gas (and biofuel to an extent) reduces cost pressure on the people using gasoline. The reason is simple. Less demand means supply is cheaper. So even using alternate fuels in a limited capacity is good for everyone, especially those who are not using alternate fuels. Cost pressure comes because we get hooked into using one fuel resource. The embargoes of the 1970s and the price pressure of the last decade occur because all of our "energy eggs" are in one basket. The victory with alternate fuel comes because other fuel options exist for companies, should the price of fossil fuel continue to rise.
