Happy Holidays

Winter 20

Greetings,

IN THIS ISSUE

The holiday season is in full swing and as we approach the end of the year I have one thought. WE MADE IT THROUGH 2011. The economy seems, at select moments, to have improved in the face of what often appears to be a cold stall. The terrifying, monthly, million person plus mass layoffs of two years ago have not continued. Truck sales and tonnage are up. All positive signs. Regardless, regulation still continues to be an issue. For the rate of growth in the trucking industry to grow, the amount of regulation is going to have to be drastically reduced. It is an obvious inhibitor of job creation and economic development. Our first story deals with this issue as the American Trucking Association is addressing the over regulation environment we face everyday.

Are Regulations Really the Answer? US Military Moves TowardAlternate Energy Holiday Schedule

Hope everyone's holiday preparation is going well! Sincerely, Michael Saks Editor of Haulin msaks@ectts.com

ARE REGULATIONS REALLY THE ANSWER? For a while I thought my rants against Federal trucking regulations were going unheard. That is not t case. The American Trucking Association has made over-regulation the main topic of their annu convention. I am not surprised. Over 50 rules have been proposed over the past two years. It is sa that each of these rules has an impact of over $100 million (each) on the trucking industry I am hoping that my math is wrong but that means over 5 billion dollars of regulations have been levi against the transportation sector. This burden is set against the backdrop of the worst recession in ov 60 years. I believe in being fair though. The Federal government has reduced regulations on a forei government by allowing Mexican trucking companies to now operate in the United States. The fact th the trucking industry is surviving at all is really a miracle in itself. I don't see regulation helping this country or economy. Problems in the transportation sector a disappearing because the drivers and companies are disappearing. Regulation is not the answer to pull us out of recession. In fa regulation is making the effects of the recession that much worst. Proof of this comes in the form of the driver shortage. There are not enough drivers for companies to expand. If companies cann expand you cannot honestly expect the economy to grow. It is not complicated. Stop regulating the American trucking industry in extinction. http://fleetowner.com/management/news/over-regulation-hottest-topic-conference-1018/?cid=nl_flo_dn&YM_RID=msaks@ectts.com

US MILITARY MOVES TOWARD ALTERNATE ENERGY

12/21/2011

The United States military is reworking their logistics strategy in a new direction. That direction is alternate energy. I recently read of the need for dual fuel or hybrid vehicles to be used for all types of combat and support missions. There are a lot of reasons why the military is moving in this direction. One of the biggest reasons is cost. The simple fact is the United States can't take its military anywhere without energy. Most of that energy is coming from the Middle East in the form of petroleum. As the region goes through constant cycles of instability, oil prices rise. Even a small increase in the price of oil adds millions to the cost of deploying our military. Couple this with the need to make huge budget cuts and cheaper fuel becomes a priority. The other major reason is security. The majority of the oil we use comes from foreign sources. This puts us at the mercy of our enemies since we have to protect our oil sources in the Middle East. Thus you have the dilemma we are in now. We are constantly going to the Middle East to protect our interests. The cost to deploy our military to protect the resource we need to deploy is adding trillions to our deficit. This does not even take into account that an oil producing supplier could cut us off to cripple our military prowess. Some of the other reasons for hybrid vehicles might surprise you. Alternate fuels make less noise which can help troops in the field avoid detection. Alternate fuels also are more efficient, requiring less time to refuel since they get better mileage. There are also some other areas that need consideration. Spending billions of dollars of tax money to buy foreign oil is not that much different than buying all our manufactured goods from another country. When we spend those dollars overseas, we strengthen other economies. Alternate energy means jobs, refineries, and investment here in North America. The military is the biggest expense we have as a country. If the United States military becomes the biggest customer of a fuel refined in America, think how many dollars that would pour back into our economy. http://www.defense.gov/home/features/2011/0611_energy/
