Golfing, hiking, biking, horseback riding and lots more! In the scenic Sonoran Desert Foothills, Carefree and Cave Creek are two of Arizona’s most distinctive towns. Small town charm combined with friendly locals and more than 300 days per year of glorious sunshine make the area perfect for enjoying every type of activity, year round.

Golfing

Both towns offer a choice of several world-class golf courses, situated among some of the most beautiful desert landscapes you will ever see. Public courses include the beautiful Rancho Manana Golf Club, Dove Valley Ranch and Legend Trails Golf Club. Private courses feature the popular Tatum Ranch Golf Club and other well-known spectacular places such as Desert Forest Golf Club, and The Boulders. Whatever your skill level, there will be a course suited to your abilities, making for a great day on the links.

Parks

The Cave Creek Regional Park protects roughly 3,000 acres of extremely lush Sonoran Desert just north of the Phoenix city limits. The steep and very rocky slopes offer excellent habitat for cacti, desert trees, and many other plants. Wildlife is common at the park. Birdlife is especially abundant, ranging from tiny hummingbirds to hawks. Hiking, biking, horseback riding and picnicking are favorite activities. Cave Creek’s historic Spur Cross Ranch, a former guest ranch that was established in the 1920s, was once a welcoming destination for visitors from all over the world. Today, it’s more than 2,154-acre expanse offers avid outdoorsmen and women a gateway into the Tonto National Forest’s scenic network of paths. Now a conservation area, Spur Cross contains fascinating archaeology sites and lush riparian areas along Cave Creek, which flows throughout the winter months. This area is a must see for all wildflower lovers in the spring. Desert Awareness Park is a native habitat park right in the heart of Cave Creek. A nature trail with labeled plants, natural history center, a children’s playground and shade ramadas with grills make this an excellent picnic and play area for families.

has been a popular destination since the early 1900’s. Extensive hiking trails lead from the desert floor to changes in higher elevations. A lovely picnic site under large sycamore trees along the creek is an inviting drive, and the Civilian Conservation Corps tables and stone walls are still in use today. Hayrides, cowboy cookouts, guided horseback rides and other entertainment are provided at MacDonald’s Ranch just south of town. Horseback riding and bike rentals are both available in Cave Creek.

Fishing and Boating

There are three lakes with swimming, fishing, boating and water skiing within a half hour drive of Carefree and Cave Creek. Fifteen miles east of Carefree are Bartlett and Horseshoe Lakes. Bartlett has picnic tables with shade and restroom facilities, boat rentals and marina. About twenty miles west is Lake Pleasant, a large lake with a visitor center, restaurant, two marinas and lots of amenities. The Tonto National forest borders the area on the north and east with its untouched desert beauty.

Pet Tips

More people are traveling with their pets and enjoying them in the outdoors. Our community has clearly become more pet friendly with hiking trails and other services that cater to pet owners. Some people claim that Arizona is the most pet-friendly state in the USA. The desert however can be less pet-friendly and as more people get outdoors to enjoy its beauty. we wanted to share with you these important tips to keep you pet protected and to fully enjoy your time in the desert. 1. Water. Carry plenty of it. Our desert is dry and pets lose moisture fast when panting. This leads to dehydration and heatstroke. Never keep them in the car for any period of time. Getting your pet back to the car in an emergency can also put you and the people in your group at risk. 2. Leashes protect pets new to the desert. This keeps them on a nice pace while you watch for hazards on the trail. Cactus thorns (we call them Cholla), scorpions and rattlesnakes are well camouflaged and can strike in an instant. Dogs off leash are also more likely to be attacked by the larger wildlife in the area. Small pets of leash can be lifted off by our native birds of prey. 3. If you are back home for the summer or after vacation and your pet doesn’t feel well, make sure you tell your veterinarian that you traveled to Arizona. Valley Fever is a fungal infection specific to our area.Non-native pets are more susceptible to this disease and veterinarians outside of Arizona are less apt to quickly diagnose this condition. The Cave Creek / Carefree area offers a variety of trails for exploring on foot, bicycles and horseback. There are excellent trails through Cave Creek Park that range from short and easy to somewhat difficult. The most popular and challenging is the 4.8-mile Go John Trail, which is amenable to hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Guided trail rides through the park on horseback are available from late autumn through the spring. Rangers provide a variety of free, guided hikes and activities for visitors of all ages throughout the year. Spur Cross has a number of trails from a flat wide path crisscrossing the stream to a hike up into the mountains of Skull Mesa. Many of these beautiful trails are open to mountain bikers and horseback riders. Seven Springs Recreation Area

Hiking, Jeep tours, old west museum & more. The Carefree Cave Creek area is a nature lover’s paradise. You can take jeep tours through the desert landscape and visit an old fashioned 1883 gold mine, or take in the view from a hot air balloon soaring over the desert floor. For more adventurous types rent a 4-wheel drive all-terrain vehicle and explore miles of back country roads on your own. Perched on a hilltop is Sears-Kay Ruin, a short drive east of Carefree. It contains the masonry remains of a small village built by the Hohokam tribe. A short self-guided hike leads through the ruins. On the way to Sears-Kay the nearby Tonto Hills development is marked by the world’s largest katchina doll. This awesome 40-foot-tall sentry stands guard at the entrance and is approachable by road.

Many spectacular homes are nestled in the foothills and the views of our Sonoran Desert are amazing. Take a scenic drive around the area to get a look at how beautiful Carefree and Cave Creek truly are.

The Jewel of the Creek can be reached easily by two short loop trails. This magnificent 26-acre parcel of land at the northern edge of the Town of Cave Creek is a desert oasis filled with towering cottonwood and willow trees. The unusual year-round presence of water makes this lush riparian area a magnet for plant and animal life.

Amidst the Desert Gardens lies the famous Carefree Sundial landmark. It is one of the world’s largest sundials measuring 90 feet across. This ancient time-telling instrument has been attracting visitors since it was built in 1959. Enjoy the new sparkling reflective pool situated underneath the sundial mesmerizing visitors with a lightshow as the sun goes down.

Known for national famous art festivals the Pavilion hosts multiple events like the coveted annual Christmas Festival, Sunday concerts and the new Fall exhibit featuring a world renowned pumpkin carver who transforms the Gardens into nothing you’ve ever seen! Frontier Town, an 1880s-style theme town located on Cave Creek Road in the center of Cave Creek, is a recreation of the old west. Two towns – two histories. Carefree and Cave Creek share a beautiful, ancient landmark, Black Mountain; and, a dedicated Chamber of Commerce. Interestingly, the towns do not share historical beginnings. Cave Creek was established pre-statehood, and Carefree was established post-statehood. Let’s explore the diverse histories of two celebrated towns. Arizona became a United States Territory on February 24, 1863. Fort Whipple, near the future town of Prescott, became the first territorial capital. In October, 1870, commanding officer of the new Arizona Territory, brevetted Major General George S. Stoneman, was exploring an established Native American trail which potentially would serve as a shortcut to Fort Whipple, from Camp McDowell (later Fort McDowell). Along this ancient trail, later called the “the Military Road,” the Army found a lush, riparian area bordering a flowing creek with adjacent bubbling springs. The welcomed creek, was designated “Cave Creek” by the Cavalry because of a sizable, eroded cave found along the bank. A few years later, in 1877, the first industrious Anglos built an adobe home along the creek close to where the Cavalry first rested in 1870. Jeriah and Amanda Wood soon established Cave Creek Station. A “station” is an inviting “lodge” for hungry and exhausted travelers. Yes, General Stoneman “discovered” the future town of Cave Creek; it was part of a fortuitous journey to a protective fort in northern Arizona, Fort Whipple (Prescott). Let’s move to the next century. On February 14, 1912, Arizona became the last of the contiguous forty-eight states to achieve statehood. Yes, we are the “Valentine State!” Fastforward to 1946 when two businessmen met at a Kiwanis luncheon in downtown Phoenix: Stanford graduate, Tom Darlington, and University of Arizona law-school graduate, Kenyon Turner (K.T.) Palmer. The topic of real-estate arose and soon the idea of starting a brand-new town became a compelling idea.

The corporate name, “Carefree Development Corporation,” survived as the new town’s name (Carefree) after many unique name-proposals were suggested. In 1958, the DarlingtonPalmer building was finished (now Carefree Town Hall). In 1959, the iconic Sundial was completed and home sales successfully commenced. Cave Creek had a new neighbor! In 2015, the Carefree/ Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 50th birthday. This is an important occasion to celebrate a supportive and appreciated “Chamber of Commerce” which serves two celebrated towns, with two distinct, celebrated histories. – Story by Kraig R. In 1934, K.T. Palmer homesteaded a 640-acre ranch on the western slope of Pinnacle Peak. Mr. Palmer eventually served as President of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. Tom Darlington was the plant manager for Garrett Corporation’s AirResearch in Phoenix during World War Two and decided to stay in Arizona after the War. Mr. Darlington eventually served as President of the Paradise Valley Improvement Association. Years later, both men found themselves working in a Scottsdale real estate office and a past, monumental-dream was rekindled. It was time to locate a townsite with a generous water supply. In 1955, a four hundred acre site – a goat farm – was found with an abundant well. Soon, 2,200 surrounding acres were secured.

Art festivals to theater to live music – it’s all here! The beauty of the natural environment in the Carefree / Cave Creek area inspires artists, musicians and writers. The two towns are committed to promoting the arts with festivals, public art installations and art galleries. Many artists live in the community and they have been joined by a significant number of fine art galleries. The galleries rival, and some say surpass, the galleries in Scottsdale and Sedona, for the quality and diversity of the art shown, and for the artists’ regional and national reputations. In addition, many artists’ studios are open by appointment year round. Over 40 of these studios are open to the public every November for the nationally recognized Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour, which is sponsored by the Sonoran Arts League. In the fall, winter and spring, Carefree holds its Thunderbird Artists Fine Art and Wine Festivals, bringing more than 30,000 art lovers to town. Works of art from life-sized bronze sculptures to an array of pottery, photography, paintings and jewelry are on display. The Festival of Fine Art at Stagecoach Village in the fall attracts exhibitors from throughout the Southwest. The Desert Foothills Theater, has been providing high-quality theater to Northeast Valley residents for 40 years. Each year DFT’s performances draw thousands of attendees and have received several nominations for ariZoni awards. For music lovers the Arizona Musicfest regales the community with concerts by world-renowned classical, jazz and Broadway musicians during February and March. Live music is part of the ambiance of art festivals, and local bands play on weekend nights to entertain the dancing crowd. People travel from all over to attend our festivals, often planning their visits around these events.

Harold’s: Eight Decades of Rich History! One of the state’s oldest restaurants -- where several Western movies were filmed, Dick Van Dyke played the drums, and four Steelers Super Bowl parties were held – Harold’s has a colorful, rich history. A man named Johnny Walker built the original structure of Harold’s Corral in 1935. Back then it was known as The Cave Creek Corral Bar, and it became popular with patrons who spent their days building Bartlett and Horseshoe Dams. There were seven bars in Cave Creek at that time, but by 1947, when the dams were finished and the workers left, The Corral was the only bar that survived. Somewhere around 1950, Harold and Ruth Gavagan purchased the building, changing the name to Harold’s Cave Creek Corral. Though Harold passed many years ago, and ownership has changed just three times, the restaurant’s current owners continue the legend with delicious food, live entertainment, and a unique hospitality that can only be experienced first-hand. The Carefree Cave Creek area is quickly becoming a valley favorite for all types of live entertainment featuring a very diverse variety of acts and events from which to choose. When it comes to live music, we refer to it as Cave Creek’s “Mile of Music.” With nearly a dozen venues offering live entertainment several nights per week and a few nearly daily, Cave Creek’s entertainment district is red hot. Numerous types of evening entertainment are featured including all genres of music from original country to pop cover bands and jazz. Western dance lessons are conducted on various days at more than one local saloon. The Desert Foothills Theater has been presenting award-winning theater in the area since 1975! The communitysupported theater offers a full-season of great productions annually at the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center as well as other venues throughout Carefree and Cave Creek. Pre-school to community college to continuting education. Cave Creek’s first school dates back to the late 1800’s and was located on School House Road. The little white painted schoolhouse served students for many years until it was expanded into a new four-room school in the 1950’s. The newly expanded school included a corral for the students’ horses and a room designated as the Cave Creek Library. Today’s schools look quite different from the old schoolhouse, but still strive to provide the quality education and neighborhood school atmosphere that has served our community for more than 100 years. The Cave Creek Unified School District is composed of five elementary schools, one middle school, a high school, Fine Arts Center and District Offices. The serene, rural atmosphere provides high quality educational experiences to all students with personalized attention designed to develop the potential of each student. Helping to make our towns a better place to live. Volunteer Opportunities Among the many things that make our community a vibrant place to be and a unique place to live is the spirit of volunteerism that unites us all. Abundant opportunities exist for getting involved and giving your time and talents to our great community organizations that depend on volunteers to operate.

Community Service The Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce is always looking for men & women to volunteer in the Chamber Visitor Center and during the many festivals that happen in our community. If you have a love for our community and meeting new people, we need you! Foothills Caring Corps is a program that provides services to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities to maintain their independence by delivering meals and providing transportation to doctorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s appointments, the grocery store and to cultural events. Foothills Food Bank, Domestic Violence education and assistance, and the Holiday project are other programs that depend on volunteers to reach out to those in need.

Cultural Programs

The Desert Foothills Library and the Cave Creek Museum could not operate without the generosity of volunteers who assist visitors, update exhibits, staff the circulation desk, shelve books, and keep the doors open to share resources with the community. Artists or art lovers may volunteer with the Sonoran Arts League to plan the annual Hidden in the Hills Art Tour and other art shows. The Arizona Musicfest organization welcomes volunteers to plan and support the Annual Festival of Music, special signature events and music programs for youth.

Environment/Wildlife The Southwest Wildlife Rehabilitation, Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, Desert Awareness Committee and Desert Foothills Land Trust offer volunteers a chance to connect with others who share concerns about preserving our wildlife and environment. Foothills Animal Rescue, Tierra Madre Horse Sanctuary, Triple R Horse Rescue and Animal Guardian Network are community organizations that can satisfy your need for a four legged friend. The Foothills Community Foundation facilitates many community projects that enhance the quality of life for our neighborhoods and provide service options for volunteers: the Desert Foothills Theater, Cave Creek Christmas Pageant, Foothills Film Society, MindQuest Lecture Series or Visual Arts Program that offers art lectures and field trips to museums and galleries.

Highlights of 2014-2015

The Board of Directors is committed to the mission and vision of our Chamber and what that means to the success of our business community as we lead into the future. At the heart of that vision is a continued emphasis and commitment to our membership. We are a membership organization and while the reasons for membership are varied, hundreds of businesses and organizations are counting on the Chamber to assist in the enhancement and promotion of their business through Chamber membership. This is a responsibility the Chamber does not take lightly. While the Chamber strives to promote all business, our goal is to improve the level of value that a membership with the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber provides. Continued improvement with communication through our website and social media, along with additional and improved networking and marketing opportunities for our members, are two examples of what your Chamber priorities are. Other goals include the continued expansion of Chamber committees which include Events, Ambassadors, Communications, Marketing, Business Advocacy and Membership. We strive to bring you dynamic programs at the monthly Business Breakfast that will be encouraging to you and give you information on ideas to help you grow your business. We also provide monthly networking Mixer designed for you to be able to meet/greet your fellow business owners in a casual atmosphere to exchange ideas and encourage one another.

The launch of our newly designed mobile friendly Web site came in October of 2014. We are consistently adding or improving the website for better functionality. Our website has a robust business directory featuring our member businesses that has numerous search capabilities. A community events calendar is maintained with various events submitted by community organizations. The website incorporates updated visitor and resident information. New web pages have been added to provide more information to our community. Besides updating our website on a daily basis, Facebook and Twitter are also being used to promote member businesses and events of our community.

Mission Statement: The Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce is committed to the growth of its members.

This year the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce was invited to join the East Valley Chamber of Commerce Alliance. Other partners in the Alliance include Chambers of Commerce from Scottsdale, Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler, Mesa, Queen Creek and Apache Junction. Together we represent the business community south to Queen Creek east to Apache Junction, west to Tempe and north to Carefree and Cave Creek. The Alliance creates a legislative agenda and engages the services of a lobbyist, currently The Dorn Policy Group, to represent the business communities that the EVCCA represents.

Additional Accomplishments: • Provided two $1,500 scholarships to two graduating seniors in the workforce development internship program in conjunction with our local high school. • Continued mail delivery of 26,000+ copies of the Chamber Community Guide, the premier resource of information for our residents as well as our business community, to zip codes 85377, 85327, 85331, 85262 and Terravita. • Organized the Electric Light Parade for the Carefree Christmas festival. An estimated 18, 000 people were in attendance from all over the valley. Approximately 50 entries were in the mile long parade. • Managed volunteer staff for the entrance gates and wine sales at all Thunderbird Artists Carefree Fine Art & Wine Festivals. • Larger crowds have attended our networking functions. Our monthly Business Breakfast has an average of forty participants each month and our monthly After Hours Mixers have an average of sixty participants each month. • Approved a balanced annual budget • The chamber advertised our Carefree and Cave Creek destinations in City Sun Times, The Valley Times and Images AZ Magazine on a monthly basis. Weekly events press releases were printed in the Scottsdale Republic, Foothills Focus and Sonoran News. More active posts were recorded on Facebook and the Chamber website for Chamber and community events. • Celebrated the Chamber’s 50th anniversary and held our Celebration of Excellence where we recognized outstanding members of the year.
