S

ince opening its doors in 1956, Cardinal Glennon has earned its reputation as a leader in pediatric medical care. Among its many breakthroughs, Cardinal Glennon was the first pediatric hospital in Missouri to perform an infant kidney transplant, build a Level I pediatric trauma center, create a neonatal transport team and establish a poison control center. Today, as the only freestanding Catholic pediatric hospital in the United States, Cardinal Glennon serves children from not only Missouri and Illinois, but children across the United States and from around the world, regardless of their ability to pay. Cardinal Glennon continues to provide innovative care with more than 200 specialists in 60 areas of practice. Our Pediatric Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Pediatric Gastroenterology & GI Surgery and Pediatric Nephrology specialty practices are ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News and World Report. Cardinal Glennon is also home to the nationally-recognized Costas Center, Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Trauma Center, Danis Pediatric Center, Dana Brown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, St. Louis Fetal Care Institute and the Dorothy and Larry Dallas Heart Center. While its technology and medical expertise enables Cardinal Glennon to provide world-class care to patients, it is the dedicated team of passionate caregivers that makes Cardinal Glennon such a special place. I am often moved and proud to hear the emotional stories from grateful families about how a physician, nurse or staff member went above and beyond to make a patient or family member comfortable during their stay. Whether it is playing a game with a child preparing for a procedure or providing a reassuring hug to a parent at a difficult time, Glennon’s team is there to provide its support. Cardinal Glennon’s Mission “Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God” is certainly reflected in the personalized care provided on a daily basis. Patients and their families frequently refer to Glennon’s caregivers as being part of their family, and I know the caregivers feel the same way about their patients and their families. Of course, the exceptional care provided at Cardinal Glennon could not be accomplished without the generous support received from our donors and corporate sponsors. I am excited that we will again have the support of Cardinals Nation through our Homers for Health and K’s for Kids program. Since Matt and Leslee Holliday helped launch the program in 2012, we have been able to make child-friendly improvements to the hospital and purchase state-of-the-art equipment. Thanks to the support of our Homers for Health Chairman, Matt Carpenter, and co-chair Jedd Gyorko, along with K’s for Kids co-chairs, Adam Wainwright and Tyler Lyons, proceeds from this season will help fund the most critical needs of the hospital. I am honored and excited to serve as the President of the Board of Governors of the Foundation as we continue our efforts to serve as advocates for the needs of our patients and provide much-needed funding to support Cardinal Glennon’s exceptional health care. I invite you to join us for an afternoon or evening of fun at one of our many 2018 events, or visit glennon.org to make a pledge for Homers for Health, participate in an online auction or make a donation to support our mission. On behalf of the patients, their families, physicians, nurses, staff and the Foundation, thank you for your continued support.

Fire Truck O’Toys

T

he holiday season always brings wonderful visitors to help spread holiday cheer to our patients and families. Santa Claus himself made his first stop to the hospital in a vintage fire truck full of toys - much to the delight of our children and families! Santa arrived in his red “Fire Truck O’Toys” and delivered all of the goodies to our patients in the atrium, beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. Each year, the Fire Truck O’Toys organization collects donated toys and also purchases toys with financial donations. During the holidays, the group packs them up in the fire truck - then makes a quick stop at the North Pole to pick up Santa - before heading to St. Louis area children’s medical facilities to deliver them to all the good boys and girls.

ast October, Rob, an independent window washer from Lebanon, Missouri, won the hearts of the small and big as he dressed up as Captain America to wash the hospital’s windows. He brought smiles to many people, whether they spotted him on the outside of the building or through the windows of a patient room. Rob completes the job twice a year and tells us he likes to complete the fall job around Halloween so that he can dress up and bring smiles to the faces of patients and their families. Thanks Rob for brightening the lives of Cardinal Glennon kids!

he employees of 140 St. Louisarea Walgreens Company pharmacy stores will lace up their running shoes and return as presenting sponsors of the Cardinal Glennon Sun Run on September 30. Last year’s Sun Run 5K Run and one-mile Fun Run drew 1,600 runners and walkers to Ballpark Village in downtown St. Louis. Walgreens supported the event and

at checkout counters in Missouri and Illinois. “We raised approximately $27,000 for Cardinal Glennon,” says Scott Hoselton, manager for the St. Louis City South District of Walgreens. “We also supported the walk by participating. More than 15 team members walked or ran to support the Sun Run. There were

and lotion,” he said. “We value the opportunity to be a community partner with SSM Health Cardinal Glennon and look forward to supporting the Sun Run this year and raising more money for Cardinal Glennon kids.” Many Walgreens employees have personally experienced the hospital’s care and the importance of its resources. “My doctor thought my child might have cystic fibrosis so I took him to Cardinal Glennon to have tests performed,” says Gayle Stavinoha, a pharmacist and Walgreens Creve Coeur District manager. “I remember walking down the halls in tears, carrying my

1-year-old as I was pregnant with my third child. “I was wishing it was me having the test and not him. Everyone at Cardinal Glennon was so sympathetic,” she recalls. “They immediately took me somewhere private and reassured me that they were going to get the tests completed and get the best possible results as fast as they could.” The tests confirmed that Henry did not have cystic fibrosis, Stavinoha says. “It was so reassuring to have that level of care and know my son was going to be okay.” Henry, now 18, is a freshman at Missouri University of Science & Technology, majoring in mechanical engineering and playing football. Walgreens stores on the Missouri and Illinois sides of metropolitan St. Louis employ about 3,500 people. The company started as one drug store in 1901 and now operates 8,100 pharmacies in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Those stores make up the Retail Pharmacy USA division of Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., which was established in the 2014 merger Scott Hoselton, manager for the St. Louis of Walgreens City South District of and Alliance Walgreens Boots of Europe. It is the largest pharmacy operator in the U.S. and Europe. Employees of those stores volunteered more than 180,000 hours to community service in 2017. Globally, Walgreens Boots Alliance employs 385,000 people

at 13,200 stores in 25 countries. Forbes magazine has named Walgreens to its annual list of “World’s Most Admired Companies” for the past 25 years. The company’s mission statement summarizes, “Our vision is to be America’s mostloved, pharmacy-led health, well-being and beauty company. Our purpose is to champion the health and well-being of every community in America.” All three of its community priorities mirror the goals of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon: • Support the health, well-being and vitality of the communities we serve; • Enable young people to achieve their potential wherever they are in the world; • Develop and mobilize our resources and partnerships in the fight against cancer. Community support is a pillar of the company’s philanthropy and volunteerism, the statement continues. “We strive to be a responsible neighbor in the communities we serve around the world.”

Gayle with son Henry, now 18

Community support After giving birth, Gayle Stavinoha donated her son’s umbilical cord to the St. Louis Cord Blood Bank at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. “About nine years ago the bank called and said they wanted to use Henry’s cord blood to treat a child who had cancer,” she says. “They said Henry was a match for this child and they wanted to make sure he hadn’t developed any childhood diseases. Of course, he was perfectly healthy.” “I was so grateful that they would be able to use the cord blood from my son to save another child,” Stavinoha says. “Were it not for the donations to the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation and the generosity of everyone who cares,

“ ...we focus on initiatives that generate excitement and engagement among our customers and our employees.” The 2017 corporate social responsibility statement for Walgreens says, “We have a moral imperative to be a good corporate citizen. Our customers want products they can trust. Our employees want to work for a company that does the right thing . . . we focus on initiatives that generate excitement and engagement among our customers and our employees.”

that would not have been possible. A child would not have been saved.” “At Walgreens we’re fortunate to have such committed team members who support the communities they serve,” Hoselton says. “Our Walgreens team is devoted to helping people live healthier and happier lives.”

T

he second annual Glennon Glow event was held Saturday, October 28 at the Ritz-Carlton St. Louis. The event, once again presented by Centene Charitable Foundation, celebrated the work performed by the doctors and nurses in The Costas Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. As guests arrived they were greeted by a wall of children’s smiling faces as they entered the prefunction sunset-themed area. In the ballroom, a giant moon hung from the sky, fitting for the year of the eclipse. Stars glowed in the ceiling, along with glowing tables and moon centerpieces lighting the way.

omedian and magician Justin Willman returned to emcee the evening, along with KSDK’s Anne Allred, daughter of Glennon Award recipient and Board Member Allen Allred. Willman performed magic tricks on stage with Anne, along with others in the audience, wowing the crowd once again with his talent. A nod was given to former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jason Motte, who was in the crowd with his wife Caitlin. A clip was shown of him throwing the last pitch to win Game 7 of the 2011 World Series six years ago on that very night. After dinner there was a special presentation to longtime Glennon advocate Allen Allred, who received the hospital’s highest honor, The Glennon Award. The Glennon Award is presented as worthy recipients are identified and selected. Nominees for the award come from all segments of the community and recipients are named on the basis of demonstrated commitment in the areas of civic leadership and involvement, volunteer service, financial support and other

pursuits that benefit children. Past recipients of the Glennon Award have been Anheuser-Busch, McDonald’s, Pope John Paul II and Jerry and Peggy Ritter. Allred chaired the Bob Costas benefit for 27 years. Not only did he conceive of the idea, he recruited Bob Costas, who in turn convinced premier entertainers to perform for no cost, sometimes even two and three times. He also organized the best fundraising committee in the St. Louis area to join him in raising the much-needed funds for the children in need. “He made it fun like Tom Sawyer who convinced his friends to do his chores and paint the fence,” says Board of Governors member Jim Brennan, who presented the award to Allred. “He inspired volunteers to devote their time and own dollars. Most importantly he led by example. One thing is certain – Allen has always been faithful to the mission of helping the less fortunate children at Cardinal Glennon.” The Glennon Award was followed by a special moment when three-time cancer survivor Joey Renick and his new wife Caylee

took to the stage to share a special thank you to all the doctors, nurses and caregivers who helped him beat his illness. Renick, married in May of 2017, is now studying to be a nurse, to help others as he was helped. Next was a special performance by comedian Tom Papa who is also an actor, writer, producer and television/radio host. Papa had the audience in tears from laughter at his performance. Not only did he perform a great show for the guests, he really wanted to understand what the benefit was helping, so he visited the hospital the day before and interacted with patients and staff. The evening ended with guests dancing the night away to DJ Crucial, all having a blast to help the kids of Cardinal Glennon! Save the date for Glennon Glow, Saturday, November 17 at the Ritz-Carlton.

A Warm Environment for Oncology Patients Jimmy Brennan is all smiles as he looks around the bone marrow transplant and oncology unit on the fourth floor of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “It’s so much nicer and looks a lot better than it did before,” he says. “There’s ocean scenery instead of plain walls and it really is a lot brighter and happier place.”

J

immy, 17, is one of many patients now benefiting from a $7 million renovation of the hospital’s cancer floor. The renovation, completed thanks in part to more than $3 million in donations to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, updates rooms that were part of the original 1956 hospital. Included was the installation of a new, specialized heating, ventilation and air conditioning system with HEPA-filters to enhance the care of immune-compromised patients undergoing bone marrow transplants. Small rooms, shared bathrooms and a single shower and tub on each wing of the cancer unit are now replaced with all single rooms with private bathrooms and showers, along with full/queen pull-out beds for family members to remain near their child. Instead of plain walls, the décor in the rooms, hallways and nursing stations has taken on a beach theme, complementing the underwater theme downstairs in The Costas Center. Patients and their families now see seashells and sand, treasure chests and mini end-of-hall cabanas that serve as reading nooks. The reading nooks are named after former Guild President, Cindy Brooks, who passed away suddenly in

A new, larger playroom also was created on the floor. “I don’t know if people realize it,” says Jimmy, “but the colors and pictures on the walls can go a long way for a kid and bring them from having a bad day to having a good day because it’s so pretty.” Jimmy was diagnosed on Easter 2017 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL. His mother, Gretchen Wallace, says it was a shocking diagnosis. “It was horrible and so unexpected,” she says with tears in her eyes. “Jimmy wasn’t feeling too good and he was pale and very tired, so I took him to an urgent care center. I thought he was going to just get a steroid shot and he would be better, but a blood test came back abnormal and they told us to go to the hospital right away.” Jimmy was taken to the emergency department at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. On Easter

Sunday, in the middle of the night, the family found out Jimmy had leukemia. “I had a spinal tap, a bone marrow biopsy, and was put on chemotherapy right away,” says Jimmy. “That was in the ‘old’ rooms, which weren’t decorated and had the shared bathrooms.” To ensure the care of cancer patients was not overly disrupted during the renovations, the hospital refurbished two patient hallways at a time. “We were consistently full of patients, but we worked around the renovations all last year,” says Michelle Romano, RN, Director of Medical, Surgical Oncology and Transplant Services. “The staff and patients were absolutely amazing throughout the entire process.” Lucas Simcox-Powell, from Centralia, Ill., was just 3 years old when he was admitted to the ‘old’ oncology unit in late 2016. and after the renovations. “It is beautiful,” she says now. “I think the colors and decorations are very nice, but the biggest and best difference for us was that we had a bathroom all to ourselves and we had more room.” The average hospital stay for cancer patients is between 10 and 14 days; some patients, however, stay for months at a time. Lucas, who was treated for neuroblastoma, was in the hospital

initially for almost six weeks and returned for week-long hospital stays over the next several months. He also returned for a month-long stay while undergoing a stem cell transplant to treat his cancer. “It was hard to go back and forth from home because it was about an hour drive each way and I have two other children, Jordyn and Kaiya,” says Tana. “But the nurses and doctors were really wonderful people and the new playroom was a

great place for Lucas. I also thought the reading nooks at the end of the halls were perfect places for kids to get out of their rooms and sit and enjoy the view of outside.” The new playroom was supported and sponsored by Friends of Kids with Cancer. “It’s brighter and bigger and kids now have many more activities and games to play,” says Justine Marty, CCLS, a certified child life specialist in the hematology and

kids to get help for whatever they are going through because they treat you like a kid and not just a patient. I remember the first month I was there, I mentioned the fact that I liked Papa John’s pizza. Can you believe it? The next Monday, they brought in Papa John’s to lift my spirits up. That was really, really cool.” Jimmy and Lucas still return to the hospital for continued outpatient care in The Costas Center, where Lucas currently is enrolled in a two-year clinical trial evaluating a new cancer drug. “I hope you tell everyone who contributed to these renovations that their donations were put to

good use,” says Jimmy. “It’s really important to brighten up kids’ days when they are going through something like this.” Gretchen Wallace agrees. “You know, when we came to the hospital last April, the weather was cloudy and rainy and I watched while the renovations were slowly being completed. By the time Jimmy was able to come home, the weather was brighter...and so was the hospital. I couldn’t help but feel optimistic about everything.”

It’s been so uplifting for everybody to see the beautiful changes here.” Jimmy, now back to what he calls a relatively “normal” lifestyle after missing an entire semester of school, is a junior at Chaminade College Preparatory School in Creve Coeur, Mo. Upon entering they were wowed by old movie clips playing on the screens throughout the night and giant letters mimicking the infamous Hollywood sign in the hills, but instead spelling out ‘Heart & Soul.’ Heart and Soul was once again presented by Keeley Companies, whose owners Rusty and Julie Keeley are grateful for the care they received when their son Ryan’s life was saved at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. “We have been blessed in our family time and time again because of the Dallas Heart Center,” says Julie Keeley. “Blessed because of the miracle workers who are there and there is nowhere we would rather give back.” This year’s co-chairs were Kathey and Dave Taiclet and Mimi and Greg Twardowski. Additional sponsor support was provided by Mid-America Transplant, Whelan Securities, Mary and Joseph Stieven, The Lone Peak Group, Conley Insurance

Group, Inc., Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate, Sandberg Phoenix & Von Gontard, Conner and Jenny Walkenhorst, Stegmann Agency, Lipic’s Engagement, Computer Aided Technology, Weber Grille & Academy, Daniel Ludeman, Greenway Family Office, Rubin Brown and Joseph Koenig. Kendra Scott donated gorgeous jewelry for the always popular “jewelry pull” which sold out in 10 minutes! Stratasys donated 3-D printed heart wine charms for guests to take home as a parting gift. A highlight of the evening was when the Gregory family took to the stage, giving thanks for their son Liam, who received a heart transplant at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. His father Laramy asked everyone in the crowd who had cared for Liam in any way to stand up. “These are the people we saw every single day. God worked his miracles through their hands,” he said. Guests enjoyed a sit-down dinner and exciting silent and live auction items, including tickets to see Hamilton in the Owner’s Box at the Fox Theatre, four nights in Keystone, Colorado and the always

popular authentic Arabic meal prepared by Dr. Jureidini. A special moment happened during the live auction when an event attendee bid on the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals game and upon winning, gave the prize to the Gregory family! As the night ended, guests were treated to the screens showing iconic movie dance scenes set to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” then the band took over the song and got everyone out on the dance floor. The crowd danced the night away celebrating Cardinal Glennon kids! The Dallas Heart Center staff thanks everyone who supported the event through attending, participating in the live or silent auction or the Fund-A-Need. glennon.org Spring/Summer 2018 • 27

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

Michael’s Superhero

I

t was early in the morning so few people — or germs — were passing through the hospital’s atrium. Sarah Loness unbuckled Michael from his stroller and placed his feet on the floor. Spotting the water bubble sculpture across the room, he was off in a flash. Less than a month after a kidney transplant, the 21-month-old was on the run.

M

ichael was the first child for Sarah and husband Shawn. At the 28th week of the pregnancy, doctors discovered that Sarah had too little amniotic fluid, indicating that Michael’s kidneys were not developing. That often results in inadequate lung development, too. “We didn’t know if he would be able to breathe when he was born,” Sarah says. “They prepared us for the worst-case scenario.” Michael entered the world with normal lungs, but undeveloped kidneys and other congenital defects. Later testing indicated VATER association, a group of anomalies that arise from unknown errors early in fetal development. Michael underwent surgery two days after he was born, the first of 11 during his first 20 months. He wore a colostomy bag 2018 for 15 months. His long-term outcome

would depend upon kidney dialysis and a transplant. The kidneys filter blood then dispose of wastes and extra fluids by producing urine. They also produce important hormones.

At most pediatric hospitals, “Babies didn’t get dialyzed. They just died. There were groups in the country who felt strongly we should try to do better. We were one of those groups.” -Ellen Wood, MD Prologue

Michael’s care depended upon developments decades in the making. Construction began in 1954 on what was known as Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children. On December 24 of that year the first kidney transplant was performed in Boston between identical, 23-year-old twins. Most people are born with two kidneys but can live well with one. The recipient’s immune system accepted his twin’s kidney. Organ transplantation still languished as a treatment option because the body views non-identical tissues as

Nephrologists and surgeons at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon modified catheters and dialysis machines to handle a tenth of the fluid volumes they were designed to process. “The first baby we dialyzed from birth was born in 1984,” Wood says. “She was transplanted on Easter Sunday in 1985.” Wood has stayed in touch with that girl, who now is 33 years old, married and raising an adopted child. Three other babies born in the mid-80s would become part of Michael’s story in 20 years – glennon.org Spring/Summer 2018 • 29

invaders that should be rejected like germs. By the early 1980s drugs had been discovered to suppress the immune system and protect transplants. It nonetheless was difficult to maintain babies on dialysis, which filters body wastes, until they grew large enough to accept a donated kidney. Ellen Wood, MD, arrived at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in 1983 and would become its long-time director of nephrology. “The transplant program here was approved in 1982 and they did several teenagers that year,” she says. That era’s dialysis machines could not handle the small fluid volumes required for infant care, says Wood, a professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. At most pediatric hospitals, “Babies didn’t get dialyzed. They just died. There were groups in the country who felt strongly we should try to do better. We were one of those groups.”

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT Michael’s Superhero Sarah Modde, Shawn Loness and Robyn Rosenberger. Another milestone in Michael’s story was passed in May 2017. The 3-D Printing Center of Excellence, funded by donors, was opened at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. It creates computer-generated, three-dimensional models that assist surgeons in planning complex procedures.

Fast forward

Sarah, a social worker, and Shawn, a county sheriff’s deputy, married and gave birth on April 18, 2016, to Michael, who weighed 6 pounds and 3 ounces. He was transported to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, where SLUCare pediatric nephrologist Anne Beck, MD, became his doctor on his first day. Optimal outcomes for kidney failure require transplants, she says. “Children have to be around 22 pounds so an adult organ can be put into them. The biggest barrier for Michael was getting him to thrive on dialysis to make it to that cutoff. Because of Dr. Wood and the seasoned nephrologists and their nursing corps, who have been doing that here since 1984, Michael made it.” Last August, Michael joined 101,000 other people on the national kidney transplant waiting list. Only 17,000 find living or deceased donors each year. Transplant donors are matched according to HLA (human leukocyte antigen) proteins that tell the immune system whether cells are friend or foe. Half of HLAs are inherited from each parent but 70% of recipients do not have suitable donors in their families. Sarah and Shawn gave Michael his bright blue eyes but they could not give him a kidney. Mom’s blood type was incompatible and dad’s kidneys were too large.

Miss Rosenberger returns

By 2017, the child born in 1985 was Robyn Rosenberger, a married

Dr. Aline Tanios coordinates Michael’s medical visits through the Complex Medical Care Program.

“I thought, ‘If all this boy needs is a new kidney and I have one, there is a simple solution.’ I didn’t say it to them, but I thought, ‘I need to see if I am a match.’” -Robyn Rosenberger mother of three who had found her calling though a foundation that makes personalized superhero-style capes for children facing illnesses or disabilities. A television crew asked to follow her on a TinySuperheroes cape delivery. “Michael was on our waiting list. If the TV station hadn’t been doing the story I probably would have mailed his cape,” Robyn said. “While they were interviewing his mom, she said they were looking for a living donor.” Robyn still cannot explain what came over her. “I thought, ‘If all this boy needs is a new kidney and I have one, there is a simple solution.’ I didn’t say it to them, but I thought, ‘I need to see if I am a match.’”

Robyn found the Transplant Center at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, which cares for children at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. She underwent HLA testing and two months of counseling to make sure she accepted the ramifications of the donation. Robyn was approved and Michael’s second birthday arrived on January 17, 2018. Through a three-inch incision in the lower abdomen, Robyn’s left kidney was removed at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and whisked next door to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. The kidney was placed in Michael’s tummy by Chintalapati

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

Dr. Chintalapati Varma shows Robyn the 3-D model of her kidney.

Varma, MD, transplant surgeon and associate professor at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He planned the placement with a model of Robyn’s kidney that was generated by the 3-D Printing Center of Excellence. “Every few weeks I would visit Michael while he was on dialysis and place the model on his abdomen to see if it would fit,” Varma says. “Finally in early January it seemed to be a good fit. If we had not had the model maybe we would have waited a little longer.” Some rearranging was needed to accommodate the kidney, he says. “We exposed and pushed the bowels away, placed the kidney and started sewing. There is an artery which supplies blood to the kidney, a vein which takes blood back to the heart and the ureter, a tube that takes urine to the bladder.” After 35 to 40 minutes the work was done. Before Michael left the operating room he made urine for the first time in his life.

Unlimited

Four months after donating her kidney, Robyn ran for Michael in the Game Ball Relay.

Kidney transplants now give children life expectancies of 63 years, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Michael may benefit from future immune suppression drugs that will perform better with fewer side effects. “He will need to take medications for the rest of his life and minimize exposures to infectious environments,” Beck says. “He will go to school and do well. It will not limit him from any physical activity as long as he has access to water.” His parents’ dedicated care will boost his life quality, Beck predicts. “He is a testament to his family’s commitment. For a child to have a colostomy and go through dialysis and have no infections is spectacular.” Sarah finds it difficult to comprehend that Michael’s life has resulted from medical care that was barely possible when she was born. “He wouldn’t have made it. Then they told parents to take their

child home and love him as long as you’ve got him.” Michael had started to walk just before his transplant. Now, mom says, “He has so much energy. He’s walking and climbing and all of that fun stuff.” When Michael visits the hospital for exams he recognizes his caregivers and readily runs into outstretched arms. “He knows exactly who everybody is,” Sarah says. “He has had all of them since the day he was born.” Michael’s care is coordinated by the hospital’s Complex Medical Care Program. “He is followed by at least five specialties. We are the liaison between them and the family,” says Aline Tanios, MD, a SLUCare pediatric hospitalist and assistant professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University. “Michael is the busiest, cutest kid you will ever see, especially after all that he went through. He is amazing.”

n Thursday, April 5, we celebrated the St. Louis Cardinals home opener – which is pretty much considered a holiday in St. Louis! The rain stopped for a day and brought sunny skies shining upon thousands of fans who descended upon Ballpark Village and Busch Stadium. We also celebrated the Homers for Health Game Ball Relay – this year GBR18! Tech Electronics was the presenting sponsor of the event, now in their fourth year of support. The event started off in the hospital’s atrium where Steven Burghart, president of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, addressed the crowd. From there Laura Wasson, director of health care business development at Tech Electronics, brought everyone outside for the delivery of the official game ball. And what a delivery it was! The ball arrived via Air Methods, who delivered the ball by helicopter to the Luechtefeld family, who started the race. Madison and Logan Luechtefeld both have

cystic fibrosis and they, along with their parents, Ryan and Alicia, are Watch the video grateful for the care they have received at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. From there, the ball was carried by patients Fallon Schlautman, Hannah and Hailey Schilly, Michael Loness and Conner Walkenhorst along with all of their sponsors and supporters. Conner then passed the torch to patient D.J. Adams, who carried the ball to Ballpark Village to former Cardinals center fielder Andy Van Slyke. D.J. was having a very special day – especially because he was celebrating his 10th birthday that day! When D.J. and Andy held the torch above the crowd from the second floor, HaZe from NOW 96.3 had everyone say “Happy Birthday” to him simultaneously. As they brought the torch through the crowd, everyone was high-fiving D.J. and wishing him well on his special day! From there, D.J. and Andy headed over to Busch Stadium, where they went around the warning track with his parents and Child Life specialists Abbie Hedgpeth and Hannah Schroeder. Andy brought D.J. to the pitcher’s mound to deliver the home opener game ball. What a great birthday for D.J.!

CMN UPDATE

Meet the Luechtefelds CMN Ambassadors 2018!

D

r. Blakeslee Noyes has seen amazing advances in cystic fibrosis care during his career. So has one of his patients, Madison Luechtefeld. “And I’m only 14!” she says. Madison’s brother Logan, 7, was also born with the gene that produces cystic fibrosis (CF), which causes thick mucus to clog airways, making patients prone to infections and lung disease. In the pancreas, mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that help the body absorb nutrients. Dr. Blakeslee Noyes

Noyes, MD, a pediatric pulmonologist at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, has been caring for CF patients for nearly three decades. “Thirty years ago the average survival age for cystic fibrosis was in the 20s. Now there are more adult patients with CF than there are pediatric patients. It has been extremely gratifying to see all the advances, not only to improve the quality of life but also survival.”

“Two years ago they started taking a new drug,” says Alicia Luechtefeld, mother of Madison, Logan and middle child Brady, 10, who does not have CF. “It has been life-changing. Madison used to average two hospital visits a year for 12 to 14 days. She has now gone

a year without being admitted. Logan had one hospital visit when he was 2 and has not been in since.” Madison and Logan are active in sports at St. Clare Catholic School in O’Fallon, Ill. The miraculous course of their lives made them appropriate choices to represent SSM Health Cardinal Glennon as Children’s Miracle Network Ambassadors for 2018. The network conducts fundraising events for 170 children’s hospitals in the US and Canada. “Our Miracle Ambassadors serve as spokespersons for Children’s Miracle

been diagnosed in the Luechtefeld’s family. The disease was first recognized in 1938 but treatments were slow to develop. Through the 1950s and early 1960s, children born with CF did not finish elementary school. “There are 1,500 to 1,800 gene mutations that cause cystic fibrosis,” Noyes says. “The gene was identified around the time I was finishing my medical training in 1989. That has driven a tremendous amount of research. The therapeutic advances have been astonishing for a disease that doesn’t affect

Network Hospitals of Greater St. Louis,” says Krista Lucy, executive director of the regional office. “Ambassadors share their stories with our partners, donors and event participants, giving thousands of people new understanding of why children’s hospitals need community support.” The Luechtefelds already have spoken at a dance marathon. “It was fun,” Logan says slowly. “There were speeches . . . and music . . . and FOOD!”

Continuing miracles Cystic fibrosis occurs when both parents contribute a causative gene, although it has not previously

that many patients. There are only 30,000 in the US,” he explains. Research has brought breakthroughs in digestive enzymes, as well as antibiotics and nebulizer treatments that do a better job of protecting the lungs, Noyes says. CF has become part of routine newborn screenings due to gene identification, he says. “It used to be diagnosed as late as the toddler years when they already had established disease. Newborn screening allows us to get them into treatment early and hopefully prevent some of the complications.” About 125 children and teens receive CF care at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. More than 50 former patients have graduated to adult care. Two drugs in clinical trials could correct the abnormal protein that launches the defective mucus production at the root of CF. “They could benefit 90% to 95% of CF patients,” Noyes says. “They could add years or decades to their lives.”

Those patients and others will benefit from a recent gift made by Noyes’ late stepfather and mother, he says. “The George and Patricia Erker Endowed Chair in Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine will allow us to continue to expand our services for all pediatric patients with respiratory disorders and allow us to continue to increase support for attending staff.”

Intensive care “We ask families to do a lot,” says Noyes. “They may have an hour of their morning and an hour of their evening dedicated to their care, if not more.” Madison and Logan both take about 30 pills a day. Madison also carries a feeding tube to receive extra nutrition five nights a week. “We are extremely compliant parents,” Alicia says. “We don’t miss a pill. We push them to do anything they want to do. They play a lot of sports and got into swimming early to help them increase their lung capacity.” Her children often speak about CF, Alicia says. “We would be happy to be rid of the disease, but it has made Madison who she is — strong and resilient. She became articulate at a young age. They clearly understand the implications of cystic fibrosis but I am not sure they have thought of it as being life-shortening.” Madison thinks she would like to become a doctor, possibly a neurosurgeon. Logan currently intends to become a professional basketball player. “Typical 7-year-old!” Alicia says. “When I was in kindergarten,” Madison says with a laugh, “I wanted to be an astronaut.”

Through various fundraising efforts, peer support and staff recognition opportunities, the Ambassadors have an ongoing passion to partner with the hospital and the community, putting mission “in motion” on a daily basis. “Ambassadors are parents or long-term patients who choose to stay connected with us beyond their clinical relationship,” says Grateful Patient Coordinator Laura Wulf. “They say ‘yes’ to opportunities that can support the hospital, our staff

or our patient families. “We named this connection ‘Glennon Ambassadors’ because through their gratitude and involvement, these families are Ambassadors for our hospital,” she says. “Their experiences are the heartbeat of Cardinal Glennon. It’s my role to connect with our families and give their gratitude, stories and feedback ‘legs.’ Harnessing those in different ways, and molding them into something the hospital or the community can feel, see, hear or grow from is amazing for us and often healing for them, too. “Some of our families live close. Others live really far away. Some have lots of time. Others have very little time. Some have big voices, others don’t. We’re very lucky

to have whatever time, talent or treasure they can offer,” Wulf says. “We engage many parents by having them share their story. We can also connect our parents with the hospital’s Family Advisory Council, E-Advisors, hospital teams, event committees, fundraising and volunteering. Some families have no idea what they can or might do, and others boldly make suggestions.” Are you a parent or patient family of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon who would like to connect, share or make a difference? Meet some Glennon Ambassadors who are making a difference: Joe Rohatsch was a patient at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon when he was a kid. “I wanted to turn my love for food and relationships with some restaurant owners into a way to help the hospital. We started a weekly dinner program for the parents called Tasty Tuesdays. It’s great being able to do what I love to support families and the hospital that gave me a chance.”

Joe Rohatsch

“Our daughter Averi Rose has been coming to Cardinal Glennon for years and is treated in the Dorothy and Larry Dallas Heart Center,” says Staci Budde. “We love to connect with and support other families. We’ve shared our story through several different outlets, and we support multiple events. We also host an annual community fundraiser for the hospital at Blue Springs Ranch.” The Budde family

“My son Vincent was born with a heart defect. Cardinal Glennon saved his life more than once,” says Jenny Pekny. “I am so grateful for the care our whole family received that I take any opportunity to say thank you. I serve on the Ambassador Choice Awards planning team. I volunteer for multiple events, write Messages of Hope, and we’ve shared our story for a campaign. I have eight children so it’s difficult to come to the hospital much, but there are many things I’ve been able to do from home.” Jenny and Vincent Pekny

Brian Knobbe was treated at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon for more than 30 years. “Being a hospital volunteer each Tuesday is the way I love to give back. I have been able to make my commitment work with my home life, and I can see that I am making a difference.”

Brian Knobbe

“My daughter, Jessica, passed away from cystic fibrosis, but we spent her lifetime at Cardinal Glennon,” says Missy Sweeney. “Cardinal Glennon is family. I do whatever I can that works with my job and other commitments. I am part of the Family Advisory Council, I’m part of the Ambassador Choice Award planning team and I volunteer and share our story at events.”

MIssy Sweeney

“Our daughter Evie was diagnosed with spina bifida and has been treated at Cardinal Glennon her whole life,” says Heather Morgan. “We are so grateful for the exceptional care provided by everyone in the hospital and that our little girl now has the chance to walk. “Evie has represented Cardinal Glennon for the Children’s Miracle Network and led a Sun Run team. We volunteer at some events, host our own community drives, serve on the Family Advisory Council and whatever else we can work on from home with life, work and other kids!” The Morgan family

Cheryl Hayes’ daughter, Kristina, lived with sickle cell anemia for 15 years. “Glennon became like a second home to us,” she says. “After she passed away I wanted to do something to stay connected and give back. Though I am a full-time teacher, I enjoy volunteering whenever I can. I have served on a short-term Bereavement Committee, the Ambassador Choice Awards planning committee and the Family Advisory Council. I love being able to share my feedback and advocate for other families.” Cheryl Hayes

“My son Nic was treated at Cardinal Glennon for three years,” says Claudia Hall. “I wanted to stay connected to the staff that meant so much to me and support other families. I do snack rounds with the parent courtesy cart, which gives me an opportunity to give to others, and pay forward the smiles that got me through my tough days as a parent there.” Claudia and Nic Hall glennon.org Spring/Summer 2018 • 47

Barrett Earnest

B

arrett Earnest has a calm demeanor and contemplative eyes. In six short months of life, he has undergone 10 medical procedures to address a cleft lip and palate, a heart defect and lung problems. His family anticipates several more procedures to deal with other health issues before Barrett turns 5 years old. “I promised myself I would never ask, ‘why us?’” says his mother Monica. “I decided that I would always look forward. The only way to make it through all of this is to stay positive. Cardinal Glennon helps us do that.” Monica had what she describes as a very healthy pregnancy. At

20 weeks, however, an ultrasound revealed the cleft lip and palate as well as a condition called Tetrology of Fallot with pulmonary atresia, a complex congenital heart defect. “We met with a cardiologist and he told us that Barrett wasn’t getting blood flow to his pulmonary artery,” says Monica. “He would have to undergo a procedure to restore that blood flow after he was born.” When Barrett finally arrived at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis, doctors did an immediate evaluation and discovered other medical problems in addition to the heart defect. They rushed Barrett to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

48 • SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation

“We learned about the other problems within minutes of his birth,” says Monica. “He had an underdeveloped lung and a perforated bowel. But we had already met with Dr. Fiore, the cardiothoracic surgeon, and he was so reassuring both before and after Barrett was born that we

felt at peace with everything the doctors and nurses were doing.” Barrett was in the intensive care unit at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon for more than five months. He had a shunt placed in his heart to temporarily reroute blood flow, was placed on a ventilator and had to have a gastrointestinal tube for feeding. One night, at 11 o’clock, Monica and her husband received an emergency call from the hospital. “They had been trying to wean Barrett off the ventilator and his heart suddenly arrested; it stopped beating.” Barrett experienced cardiac arrest two more times over the next two weeks. Instead of waiting until Barrett was six months or older to undergo a heart repair, doctors made the difficult decision to do open heart surgery on Barrett at two and a half months and when he weighed less than seven pounds.

started two years ago, has grown to include more than 220 young patients and their families. “Previously, these children had multiple medical issues and great subspecialty care providers, but

“ I decided that I would always look forward. The only way to make it through all of this is to stay positive. Cardinal Glennon helps us do that.” “There were definitely times when I felt overwhelmed, especially as the medical problems continued to appear and the number of doctors kept growing, too,” says Monica. “But I had faith that God would give me what I could handle.” The Earnests also were enrolled in SSM Health Cardinal Glennon’s Complex Medical Care Program, which assists families whose children have five or more specialists involved in their care. Barrett currently sees 11 subspecialty pediatric specialists. The program, which officially

they didn’t have a key quarterback that was leading the charge in terms of collaborating with all physicians to develop a single, comprehensive care plan,” says SLUCare pediatric pulmonologist Kurt Sobush, MD, co-founder and co-director of the Complex Medical Care Program. “That’s why we started this program and it’s already been a great success.” The program coordinates care in such a way that families can see several specialists and complete exams and blood work over a shorter period of time. “You almost always see a sigh of relief from these families and you can see their stress level go down because we handle all of the logistics involved in their child’s care,” explains Dr. Sobush.

The benefits of care coordination are quickly obvious. Dr. Sobush says that since the Complex Medical Care Program began in April 2016, the number of unplanned ER visits is down, attendance at subspecialty clinic visits is up, transitions from hospital to home resources are smoother, and both the patient and the physician’s satisfaction are high.

“We’ve had amazing doctors and nurses so far,” says Monica. “I actually lived at the hospital for about two and a half months after Barrett was born, and the hospital became a home away from home for us. Now that we’re back at our own home, it’s definitely reassuring that we still have the resources and help whenever we need it.” glennon.org Spring/Summer 2018 • 49

otor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional death for children 1 to 13 years old, while unintentional suffocation is the leading cause of unintentional death in children from birth to 1 year old. The SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Safety Program is dedicated to the wellbeing and safety of children of all ages. Through education and resources, the goal is to prevent unintentional childhood injuries, the leading cause of death in children from 1 to 19 years old, and contribute to the overall reduction of infant mortality in the Greater St. Louis region. Some of the many services offered include Infant and Child CPR classes, Baby Safety 101! classes, in addition to providing safe sleep resources and car seats to families in need at no cost, and much more.

Upon completion of a detailed community needs assessment, it was determined that pre-term birth and infant mortality rates in our area remain high. “Despite improvements in prenatal care and medical technology, infant mortality remains a problem in St. Louis,” says Kim Fanter, BSN, RN, an injury prevention nurse at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. A grant through Kohl’s Cares is helping SSM Health Cardinal Glennon reduce risks of injury to children through the expansion of this program, which has supported car and bicycle safety in St. Louis for more than a decade. This grant has allowed our organization to develop programs that connect high-risk mothers with resources necessary to promote healthy outcomes for themselves and their children. The SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Safety team

works closely with a coordinator at the WISH (Women and Infant Substance Help) Center for drugand alcohol-dependent pregnant women at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.

Safe at home

Safe sleep practices and mitigation of other household risks are areas taught by Lori Winkler, MSN, RN, TNS, injury prevention nurse and coordinator of Safe Kids St. Louis at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. She hosts classes at the hospital and various locations throughout Missouri and Southern Illinois. “We focus on infant safe sleep, child passenger safety, and discuss other home safety risks, including fire prevention, poison prevention and gun safety. “The risks of stomach sleeping and bed sharing during infancy

are too often overlooked,” Winkler says. “When infants are sleeping on their stomachs their lungs cannot expand the way they should. In addition, infants are obligate nose breathers, meaning they are unable to breathe out of their mouths until they are approximately 6 months old. As a result, if the infant’s nose is occluded with mucous or a blanket, pillow or bumper pads, they are unable to breathe and can suffocate.” Bed sharing is another major risk for infants under 1 year old, because the parent can unknowingly roll on top of the infant, suffocating them. The reasons reported by parents for sleeping in the same bed are many. “Accidental suffocation doesn’t only happen to poor or uneducated people,” Winkler says. “There are many reasons such as; cultural beliefs, or a lack of resources. Actually, some moms state it is more convenient, especially for night-time feedings.” The Kohl’s Cares grant also allows Winkler to provide new low-income moms a safe sleep environment that includes a pack ‘n play, a sleep sack (safer than a blanket), and a fitted sheet exclusively for the pack ‘n play. In addition, the mom is provided with a certificate redeemable for a car seat from the program, a home childproofing kit (for cabinet doors, electric outlets and tall furniture) and other safety devices.

Winkler also has gun locks available for parents if needed. Many law enforcement agencies partner with the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Safety Program, providing Winkler with these gun locks. During the class, Winkler also asks each mother to add the number for the Missouri Poison Prevention Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon in her cell phone.

safe and secure on the roads.” Funding through Kohl’s Cares is also enabling SSM Health Cardinal Glennon to expand its Safety Program to ensure children with special needs have the appropriate car seats, according to Fanter. “These children usually have special needs for a good portion of their lives. Often their parents cannot afford a vehicle with a wheelchair ramp, which is the ideal situation,” she says. Fanter works with the Complex Medical Care Program at the hospital to evaluate children who need adapted seating. “We have to take into account the child’s age, weight, physical disabilities

“Most injuries from car crashes can be prevented by using car seats and safety belts correctly. We want to start good habits from the beginning so we can keep families safe and secure on the roads.” -Kim Fanter Winkler’s goal is to host 100 Baby Safety 101! classes in 2018, teaching 2,000 parents and caregivers and 125 classes in 2019 reaching 2,500 parents and caregivers.

Safe in the car

Fanter plans to offer 100 carsafety classes and donate 700 safety seats to parents in need this year. Next year she will schedule 125 classes and distribute 800 seats. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that correctly-used child safety seats reduce the risk of fatalities in a crash by 71%. Even when children are placed in seats, three out of four are not installed correctly. “What is killing kids in our country? Car crashes,” Fanter says. “Most injuries from car crashes can be prevented by using car seats and safety belts correctly. We want to start good habits from the beginning so we can keep families

and mental and cognitive abilities. How are they able to sit? How can they bend their legs? For children with special needs, it is important for families to work with nationally certified child passenger safety technicians who are experienced in evaluating the child’s positioning needs and be able to determine which restraint will provide the most comfort and safety. The two-year grant will allow SSM Health Cardinal Glennon to minimize risks facing thousands of Missouri and Illinois children. Winkler says, “Many social determinants in our region often prevent families from accessing the resources to keep their children safe at home and on the road. Support from Kohl’s Cares has allowed our team to educate parents as well as provide them with the necessary resources to keep their children safe.”

ll it took was a simple tour through the hospital for Bryan Swift to realize the importance of having SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in the community. “My wife and I went on a tour and, frankly, I had never seen a neonatal intensive care unit or anything like that,” says Swift. “It absolutely rocked my world and brought me to my knees when I saw the battles that some of these kids face and how the doctors, nurses and staff worked together to try and get them well.” Swift, president of Swift Print Communications in St. Louis and a long-time member of the Board of Governors for SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, originally grew up in Chicago, one of 13 children in his family (he was #10!). His grandfather, John S. Swift, founded Swift Print Communications in 1912. Bryan now is the third generation of Swifts at the helm of what has become

Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Trauma Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. As he became more aware of the needs of the hospital and its vital role in the community, he became passionate about supporting the institution and joined the Board of Governors. He says, “People ask me what difference do the donations to the hospital make and I tell them that it really, truly, affects people’s lives — both the children and their families. Because we are blessed with what we have, it’s the right thing to do to give back to help this hospital take care of kids in need." In his own company, the mission statement is, “A little better

to manage change effectively while serving their customers and patients,” he says. “Cardinal Glennon is a prime example of being a great steward of resources in the midst of constant change. I’m proud to be a part of that.” Look for Swift at the next Dierdorf-Pronger Golf Classic, slated for Monday, October 15, 2018. For more information about the classic, visit glennon.org.

"

oing something good is important. It just seems to me that helping kids is a good cause, and Cardinal Glennon does a lot of great things," said Lou Mund in a 2002 Glennon Magazine profile. Mr. Mund, who passed away on November 13, 2017, was a devoted benefactor of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital for 34 years as host of the Columbia Golf Classic. Future generations of children will benefit from his generosity through his planning to bequeath a portion of his estate to the hospital. Mr. Mund was quiet, hard-working and successful. He grew up in Dupo, Ill., within sight of the St. Louis skyline across the Mississippi River. He went to work when he was nine years old, helping a farmer plant and harvest tomatoes. During high school he took on mechanical repairs in his parents' garage and at a farm implement dealership. Then he was drafted and during the early 1950s he spent two years repairing US Army tanks in Germany. After returning home he opened a business to repair automobiles, trucks and tractors. His skills and honesty brought steady clientele and friendships with businessmen who occasionally informed him of real estate opportunities. He bought a 2,000-acre farm and other properties that railroads were divesting in small towns they no longer could serve. Mr. Mund's homesite on the Columbia bluffs and his river-bottom farmlands had been occupied by Native Americans for hundreds of years. He collected arrowheads, hatchet heads and other artifacts found on his property and assisted University of Illinois archeologists in research that resulted in a significant book, The Mund Site. He also will be remembered for his contributions to the history of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon — the

President's Conference Room bears a plaque identifying it as "The Mund Room." In 1982 Mr. Mund diversified again, purchasing the Columbia Golf Course. At the urging of a friend who served on the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Board of Governors, he began hosting the annual Columbia Golf Classic in 1984. He sold the course in 2001 but negotiated a caveat into the sale agreement. "The extension of the golf event for Cardinal Glennon as long as I'm alive," he said. "I'm pretty proud of that tournament. I have no children. My wife had five miscarriages. I'm very thankful for all my employees who helped make me successful. It's given me some selfsatisfaction to know that I can share some of that success." The current owner of the golf course, Bill Hawn, is continuing Mr. Mund's legacy to Cardinal Glennon kids. He is donating the course for the 35th Annual Glennon Golf Classic on September 7.

Why I Give » “Being a man of faith I truly believe in the Cardinal Glennon mission statement. I saw it first hand when my daughter was in the PICU. The same love and care that she received is what I try to give back every day. I LOVE kids, so for me it’s a no brainer. It’s not about me, if I can make one child or their family smile or forget their situation for just a minute then I have done what I am here to do. I give because I want to make a difference in someone’s day."

Michael Patterson Michael Patterson

"My son Seth has the kindest heart! He has always loved working in the yard and helping out. He came to us this summer and asked if he could start his own lawn mowing business this year. Our first answer was, 'No honey, you are 8.' But how can you say no when he says, 'but mom I wanna try and earn money so that I can donate money to help the sick kids in the hospital.' So he spent weeks designing a flyer and a day passing them out. With the help of my friends and neighbors he was able to bring a check to the hospital in December. He was so proud, as were we! He came home and started working to fill his jar again! He says, 'if everyone would donate a little maybe we all could make a difference.'" Seth Shafer

Jamie Shafer

"My wife Martha and I have been fans of Cardinal Glennon since moving to St. Louis more than 30 years ago. But we became super fans when our grandson Declan, now nearly 7 (pictured at right with our daughter Colleen), spent the first 27 days of his life in their NICU. The skills of Glennon physicians, specialists, technicians, nurses and support staff literally saved him. Their compassion helped us navigate one of the toughest times in our lives. And they have stayed in Declan's corner through many, many follow-up care sessions ever since. We can pay. Others can't. Homers for Health is our way of making sure other Declans who can't pay have access to the same great care our Declan continues to receive."

DEVELOPMENT BOARD

Hannah Castellano President, Development Board

I

still remember the first time I walked into SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital for my first Development Board meeting. I walked into the atrium, and stopped short, because it was like walking into a children’s museum! Decorated with a big train along the wall, I immediately knew I was in a place where kids could be kids, a conductor or an engineer! I was 25 years old, an adult by some standards, and had to remind myself that I was actually in a hospital. If that room stopped me in my tracks and brought me to a place where I just wanted to let loose and play, imagine what it could do for a sick child who does not want to be reminded they’re in a hospital. It was clear to me that Cardinal Glennon embraces not only the technical aspects of treatment, but the emotional aspects as well. Areas like that couldn’t be made possible without the generous individual and corporate donors who are responsible for many of the capital improvements and supplementary programs that make Cardinal Glennon a place where kids don’t need to be afraid. Insurance companies do not cover the Music Therapy Program, the Healing Garden or the Footprints Program. The Costas Center and Dallas Heart Center would not exist without the compassion and vision of those donors who had faith that Cardinal Glennon would be a good steward of their contributions. These very programs and departments and their excellent standard of care set Cardinal Glennon apart. Not only do dollars go to improving the hospital and funding programs, they help achieve one of the objectives that is the most important to me personally: Treating every child, regardless of their ability to pay. If you have ever had to stand by idly while a loved one, much less a child, fights an illness or injury, you know how helpless that can feel. Cardinal Glennon’s devotion to all children provides families access to excellent medical care, in state of the art facilities,

without the added worry of mounting medical bills. The Development Board’s responsibility is to assist the Foundation in connecting with new and existing donors, and new and existing advocates. Our goal is to convince and remind them that their charitable choice is a noble and very much appreciated one! You may be familiar with the saying, “Glennon Gives, Give to Glennon”. Those words hit home for me, harder than a Matt Carpenter home run! Cardinal Glennon has touched my life in a number of ways, and I serve on the Development Board to pay it back, and to pay it forward. Because while I love this organization with all my heart, no one wants to see a child in the hospital. However, if I do, I want to know that I have done everything in my power to help that child receive the best treatment possible. Anyone who walks through the doors of the hospital or attends one of our fundraising events can sense a higher power: the healing presence of God. I encourage all of you to find time to experience it for yourself – although hopefully not on an ER visit. We have a very exciting slate of 2018 events and a lot for which to be thankful. I look forward to celebrating that with you.

he Costas Center collaborates with Friends of Kids with Cancer to offer the Summer Reading Program to our patients. This exciting and unique program gives children the opportunity to learn and grow through the participation of reading and reviewing a variety of books. “The reading program is especially helpful for patients with extended hospitalizations,” says Aleeza Granote, the hematology/oncology social worker. “Programs like these serve as a welcomed distraction during treatment and provide a sense of normality to the patient’s life,” she adds. Many times, school becomes a second priority in a young cancer patient’s life; the Reading Program allows children to maintain and develop their reading and writing skills, presenting them with a chance to preserve their education. Plus, Friends of Kids with Cancer awards prizes to participants who complete the program; a great incentive and opportunity to reward children for their reading.

SPOTLIGHT MARY MCDERMOTT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

9th Annual Mary McDermott 3rd Grade Basketball Tournament

I

t was a big year for the Mary McDermott 3rd Grade Basketball Tournament. With generous support from presenting sponsor, World Wide Technology, the tournament was able to raise more than $55,000 for the Hybrid Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Suite at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital! The suite features a specialized procedure room that enables interventional cardiologists to work side by side with heart surgeons to diagnose and repair specific heart problems. In Mary’s memory, her family holds the popular basketball tournament that hundreds of people attend each year. To date, donations from the tournament and in Mary’s honor have totaled more than $390,000. Mary and Colleen McDermott were born two months prematurely in March of 1984 and were immediately rushed to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. The pregnancy had been extremely difficult on mother, Connie McDermott, but her two doctors, Tom Shaner and Justin Durel, made it go as seamless as possible. When the girls got to the hospital, after a matter of a few hours, we knew they were in the right place. They were literally at death's door but because of three doctors in particular, Bill Keenan, Glenn Pennington and Thomas Weber and one nurse Judith Sippel, it was obvious they were in the best hands possible. Mary fared much worse with three heart and two liver surgeries. Colleen ended up just having bouts with sleep apnea. Mary continued to be seen by the doctors and nurses at the hospital until the time of her passing at 24 years of age.

"We conduct our tournament for a twofold reason. With the continued support of generous sponsors and donors the tournament was able to raise $119,000 for Cardinal Glennon kids! Holly Krieg was born on September 8, 1978 and was immediately taken to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital to be treated. She was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid accumulates in the brain, enlarging the head and causing brain damage. Friends of Kids with Cancer Build-a-Bear Visit

T

he Costas Center has been fortunate to collaborate with Friends of Kids with Cancer to arrange another Build-A-Bear Workshop event for our patients! "Through this impactful opportunity, our patients are able to not only design their very own bear, but socialize with kids going through similar experiences and take a break from their everyday treatment routines," said Aleeza Granote, hematology/oncology Social Worker. She adds, “such an event offers patients a moment of normality, creativity, and an opportunity to have fun.” As Winnie the Pooh once said, “we didn’t realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun.” This is the essence of Friends of Kids with Cancer and we are grateful for their ongoing support. Some patients bring their bears during their hospital visits and they become treasured keepsakes. This event has been so meaningful and we are looking forward to the fun and new memories our patients will be able to make this year!

SPOTLIGHT DRAKE WESTCOTT

Edwardsville sophomore Drake Westcott loves to hit home runs for Cardinal Glennon kids!

I

n December, Drake Westcott participated in his second International Power Showcase held at Marlins Park in Miami Florida raising $6,134 by hitting five home runs. The fundraiser allows the participants to raise money towards the charity of their choice for each home run they hit. In 2016 Westcott raised $5,255 for our hospital, hitting 16 home runs in the opening round. “I think it’s awesome I can do something I love and give back to the community and help out children and those in need,” Westcott said. This year, Westcott hit home runs along with Team Cody. Cody Warner, who is a junior at Vandalia High School, is battling Atypical Ewing’s Sarcoma. The proceeds were split between the two charities. “This is a little more personal because Cody is one of my (club) teammate’s cousin. It’s more personal for me, because I know him. It’s a good opportunity to help him out,” Westcott said. The 6-foot-3, 228-pound first baseman is committed to play baseball at Louisville. Thanks to Drake for all you do for Cardinal Glennon kids!

SM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation and the Glennon Guild announced that the 2018 Glennon Card shopping days will be held October 19 through October 28. Throughout this 10-day shopping period, those who purchase a Glennon Card will receive a generous 20% discount at more than 330 stores, restaurants and salons. All card purchases will benefit the Reach Out and Read program, which impacts children in the community. During the 2017 program, 4,971 Glennon Cards were purchased and raised $248,570 through card sales and generous sponsor support. “Our patients, staff and physicians are grateful to have such a supportive Guild,” said Steven Burghart, president at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. “Each year the funds from the Glennon Card program benefit the most immediate and important needs of our hospital, allowing us to continue to provide world-class health care, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. An example of one of these needs is the remodeling of our inpatient cancer unit, including larger patient rooms, sleeper sofas and a playroom. On behalf of everyone at Cardinal Glennon, we thank the Glennon Guild, the retailers and card buyers for their continued support.” The Glennon Guild, a ladies auxiliary, has been spearheading the Glennon Card program since 2011. The Glennon Card encourages the community to Buy Local, Shop Local and Support Local Kids. To become a Glennon Card sponsor or participating merchant, call 314-577-5605 or visit GlennonCard.org.

very year, members of the St. Louis community have given their time and talent to support the efforts of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. So many of our events would not be possible without assistance from our Glennon Rock Stars, who help spread our Mission – Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God – to a larger volunteer audience. Our volunteer base continues to grow every year and includes people from all walks of life – from high school and college students, to corporate America employees, hospital staff, retired individuals and many others. Volunteers report a high level of satisfaction with their experiences and often sense the positive impact of their efforts. Volunteer activities include helping around the office – stuffing envelopes, making thank you phone calls, delivering toys – and support our many large fundraising events, including registering guests, auction support and helping set up or tear down. Regardless of the task at hand, our volunteers play a critical role in helping us raise the much-needed funds for the hospital.

How can you become a volunteer? Visit glennon.org/volunteer or email ryan.jennings@ssmhealth.com.

n Saturday, September 16, St. Alban Roe Council 12022 hosted its 17th Annual Tee Off for the Kids at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club to benefit SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The tournament, which attracted 112 golfers, was followed by a fabulous, catered dinner and a silent and verbal auction. Jen MacArthur, a parent of a child whose son receives services at the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center, inspired guests by sharing her heartfelt testimony about the exceptional care her son has received. The Developmental Center supports children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders helping them to reach their highest potential through comprehensive evaluation, care, family guidance, education and innovative research.

TRAINED AT THE BEST

Trained at the Best Christopher Hugge, MD / 1999-2002 Pediatric Resident at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon

Children’s Hospital now Hematologist/Oncologist at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon

C

hristopher Hugge, MD, recalls fondly his days as a pediatric resident at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital when he would visit with young cancer patients and spend time with their families. “I remember I used to go up and play chess with one child who had undergone a bone marrow transplant,” he says. “It was a chance to develop some really strong relationships with patients and families because they were often in the hospital for weeks or months at a time. I loved connecting with them on that level.” Dr. Hugge originally thought he would become a general pediatrician. But his compassion and interest in the children undergoing cancer treatment caught the attention of one of his faculty mentors, Donna Wall, MD. A bone marrow transplant specialist, Dr. Wall helped to establish the St. Louis BMT and Cord Blood Bank in St. Louis in 1996.

“She called me into her office and said she noticed that I spent a lot of time with the pediatric cancer patients,” recalls Dr. Hugge. “She asked if I had thought about an oncology career path and said I would be a good fit for that program. I had never really thought about it until that time.” Dr. Wall even took it upon herself to arrange an interview for an open slot in the hematology/ oncology fellowship program at Washington University School of Medicine. Soon after, Dr. Hugge was accepted into the three-year fellowship. In 2005, after completing his advanced training, Dr. Hugge returned to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. “When I was in medical school, we rotated through Cardinal Glennon and it was pretty clear even back then that this is a special place,” he says. “The faculty were almost universally invested in us as people, not just as medical students or residents. It’s been more than a

decade since I have returned here, but I feel like it’s the same special place.” He continues some habits he started while in residency. He still does crossword puzzles and cryptograms in the physicians’ lounge and he still spends extra time with his young cancer patients. He specializes in the care of patients with blood clotting and bleeding disorders. “What stood out to me while I was training was that there were clinical faculty who were universally happy about where they worked,” he says. “That’s telling and most of us figure out pretty quickly that this hospital is a great place to make our home.” He adds, “I don’t regret my change in career path for a second. It’s an amazing field that is constantly evolving. I can’t imagine doing anything else now.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Laura Esswein Rettig / Former heart patient

now Volunteer at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital

THEN

I

n an old photo from when she was about 3 years old, Laura can be seen squatting on the ground. It wasn’t for a fun game, however; Laura just couldn’t breathe. “I was only able to walk about three or four feet and then I’d have to squat down like a little bird to get oxygen,” she recalls. “I couldn’t breathe well and I would turn blue on a regular basis.” Laura was born about three weeks premature in 1967. When she was 6 months old, Laura started to lose consciousness for short periods of time. Her parents, Larry and Glennetta Esswein, brought her to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed with Tetrology of Fallot. This is a combination of four defects, one being a hole between the two ventricles in the heart. “At the time, my parents were told that I was too little to have surgery and they would have to wait for about five years until I was bigger,” says Laura. By the time she turned 3,

NOW

she was turning blue from lack of oxygen on a regular basis. Doctors decided they couldn’t wait any longer. Laura had to undergo open heart surgery to repair the hole. As luck would have it, her heart specialist at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon in 1970 was Vallee Willman, MD, a pioneering heart surgeon who would go on to perform the first heart transplant in the Midwest in 1972. He also was among the first surgeons in the country to perform coronary bypass surgery. “My parents told me that my heart was the size of an egg,” recalls Laura. “They said I was either the first or second child in the region who had this type of surgery.” In fact, Laura’s parents were told that she may not survive or, if she did, she would not be able to run and play or even have kids of her own. Laura defied the odds. She was hospitalized for 10 days after her surgery. As she grew older, her heart got stronger. “I’ve been involved in

all kinds of things throughout my life, including sports and I am now married with three happy, healthy kids,” she says. “I have been truly blessed!” Dr. Willman, chairman of the Department of Surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine for 27 years, retired in 1996. In 2000, Laura reached out and wrote him a thank you letter, to which Dr. Willman responded with a hand-written note, “How pleased I am to learn that your life has gone along so well. Pray that God continues to favor you. I am 75 and retired. I greatly miss being with people and patients; your contacting me is, thus, a great joy.” Dr. Willman died in 2009, but Laura’s parents still recall his kindness and skill as a surgeon. Now an administrative assistant in the Salus Center at Saint Louis University, Laura continues to drive past SSM Health Cardinal Glennon almost daily. This year, she decided to reach out and become a hospital volunteer. Beginning this spring, she will be one of the friendly faces wheeling the Courtesy Cart around the hospital to bring small treats and other items to young patients and their families. “I’ve come full circle,” she says sincerely. “It’s so fulfilling to go back to a place that gave me a second chance to live my dreams.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Chris Warner / 1987: ECMO patient

now Reporter and Producer, KOAM-TV

C

hris Warner has dreamed about being a television reporter since he was 5 years old. “I actually made my own TV station sign and I would do the news from the couch when I was little,” he laughs. “I can’t believe I did that!” Chris, a reporter and producer at KOAM-TV in Joplin, Mo. and Pittsburg, Kan., covers everything from feature stories to breaking news. “It’s amazing what I can do stories about in just one week,” he says. “One day I might be talking with a Vietnam veteran and then the next day, I could be covering a crime or talking with a young man with Down syndrome who was hired by a local restaurant.” He almost didn’t get to follow his dream. When he was born at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin in March 1987, he was diagnosed with fluid in his lungs, likely amniotic fluid that he inhaled prior to birth. The complication made it difficult for his lungs to function properly. With few emergency pediatric resources at the hospital, Chris was transferred first to a hospital in Springfield, Mo., and then taken by helicopter to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “I spent the first six weeks of my life there,” Chris says. “My mom had the flu, but my dad would make the daily trip from Joplin to St. Louis every night after work to spend the night with me in the hospital.” His parents told him story after story of his birth and time at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon.

THEN

NOW

They said doctors in Springfield were initially worried that Chris wouldn’t survive; if he did, oxygen deprivation in the first few hours could cause severe mental retardation. “My parents simply didn’t want to accept that and they said Cardinal Glennon wouldn’t accept that either.” In the intensive care unit, Chris was placed on an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) life support device, which circulated his blood through an artificial lung. The device enabled Chris’ lungs to heal while giving him needed oxygen. The technology had only been available at the hospital since 1983. Today, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon is classified as a Center of Excellence for ECMO. “I have realized, as I have grown up, that failure is not an option that the staff at Cardinal Glennon thinks about when they care for their patients,” says Chris. “They will fight and do everything in their power to get

a positive outcome.” Today, Chris is married with children of his own. “My kids love to watch me on TV. Colt, who is 4 years old, says he wants to be on television to do what I do. It’s fun to hear him think like I did when I was little.” Last year, as he looked at his own family, Chris wrote a thank you letter to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. “My parents had saved a copy of their 36page bill, which was more than $93,000 at that time,” he says with emotion. “Insurance only covered a small portion and my parents were close to declaring bankruptcy trying to pay the rest off. But on the bottom of the bill, one of my parents later wrote, “Significant portion of the bill written off as charity. We owe them nothing.” How can you not feel overwhelming gratitude for a place that gave me such a wonderful life and helped my parents like that?”
