GAFIRS Lifeboat and ILB training with Coastguard Helicopter 175. Thanks to Andy Rundle for the brilliant picture

THREE PEOPLE IN WATER TROUBLE GAFIRS were paged to assist three separate people who had got into trouble in the water within 12 hours of each other. The first incident occurred on June 15 when a man left his yacht which had gone aground near Hardway and he attempted to get to shore in a canoe. Lifeboat crews recovered the man from the water, warmed him up and then safely returned him to the shore. While getting the casualty’s vessel back alongside at Hardway, GAFIRS was tasked again by UK Coastguard to assist

with a second person in the water near Portchester Castle. The man, who was in the water between Port Solent and Trafalgar Wharf, was helped to shore by lifeboat crews and placed in the care of the police, ambulance and Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team. In the early hours of June 16, GAFIRS’ smaller ILB was paged to assist a person in the water in Workhouse Lake, Gosport. The man had become stuck after a night out, but the lifeboat crew was stood down before it reached the incident.

Man airlifted from luxury Solent Fort A SERIOUSLY ill man was evacuated from the luxury No Man’s Land Fort hotel by lifeboat crews. GAFIRS was paged to assist the diabetic 44-yearold man, who had become seriously ill and couldn’t be woken, at 4.34am on March 26. Volunteer crews, one of whom is a trained paramedic, boarded the fort to provide emergency treatment after being called to assist by UK Coastguard.

What is Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service? Known locally as GAFIRS, the service is located at the eastern end of Stokes Bay, Gosport. It was founded in 1969 following a tragic drowning in Stokes Bay. Its lifeboats are on 24-hour call-out to UK Coastguard with its entirely unpaid voluntary members saving lives every year in the local waters. Is GAFIRS part of the RNLI? No. At a glance you may assume the impressive lifeboat station is part of the RNLI, but you’d be wrong. It is in fact one of 64 independent lifeboat stations located around the UK which rely entirely on local support for their fundraising. How important is GAFIRS to The Solent? GAFIRS forms an integral part of the search-and-rescue infrastructure in The Solent. As such, it can be called upon at a moment’s notice, day or night, all year round and in the worst of weather and sea states. How are the GAFIRS lifeboats called out? As a declared facility, GAFIRS lifeboats are on pager call-out with UK Coastguard. From pager activation to launching the lifeboat takes just 15 minutes. Additionally, from March through until November, the lifeboat station is manned every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday. The duty crew are available from 0930 until 1800, which means the lifeboat is at immediate readiness to launch. Are GAFIRS crew paid? No – they are all volunteers. There are no paid directors, managers, fundraisers, lifeboat crews or shore teams. Everyone at GAFIRS gives their valuable time up for free. If you’d like to help, see p9 for details. How is GAFIRS funded? GAFIRS’ primary source of income is through public and corporate donations. The Lifeboat Lotto (see p14) provides a vital regular income. How do people become part of GAFIRS or help? Anyone wishing to join can obtain more information at GAFIRS.org.uk or stop by the station on a duty day, where any of the crew will be happy to help. We are always looking for fundraisers, too – please contact James Baggott using the details (left) to find out how.

Lifeboat crew treat woman with head injury AN INDEPENDENT lifeboat was mobilised to assist a woman who had been hit on the head by the boom of a sailing vessel. Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service’s lifeboat was afloat training in the Solent when the yacht issued a mayday distress call on VHF radio at around 1pm on Sunday, March 11. The voluntary GAFIRS Lifeboat crew was tasked to assist the woman by the Coastguard and soon located the vessel, just off Browndown. The 22-year-old woman had been struck on the head and was complaining of neck and back pain. GAFIRS Lifeboat coxswain

Coxswain Peter Byford said: ‘Our paramedic crew member decided we needed to transfer the casualty to hospital so, using our Savior Stretcher, we extricated the man to the lifeboat. We then transported him to the Camber Dock, in Portsmouth, where he was transferred into the care of the ambulance service for further treatment.’ While handing the casualty over to the ambulance service, Coastgaurd tasked GAFIRS to a second incident in Portsmouth Harbour. A six-metre fishing vessel had run aground near

Mr Byford added: ‘The owner decided he was happy to wait for the next high tide and we offered to return and provide assistance then.’ GAFIRS returned to the vessel six hours later to check on the owner, and then returned again at high water at 7pm to help free the boat. Two crew members entered the water and helped push the vessel free of the mud bank and then escorted it onwards to its home berth.

Yacht with suspected fire and sick crew assisted by GAFIRS lifeboat A YACHT that had suffered engine failure after a suspected fire was assisted by GAFIRS independent lifeboat. The yacht had a crew of five – two of whom were suffering with serious sea sickness in the freezing, rough Solent waters. They called the Coastguard for assistance at around midday on Sunday, March 18. Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service, which was on patrol at the time, was asked to assist, and the lifeboat was on scene in a matter of minutes. Although the vessel was under sail, it was making very slow progress as it battled the rough Solent sea and strong tide, while the two sick crew members were

deteriorating in the bitterly cold wintry weather. GAFIRS Lifeboat coxswain Peter Brown said: ‘The crew did the right thing in the conditions and called for assistance. ‘While they would have been able to make way under sail, they were facing poor conditions and a long journey. ‘We soon located the vessel and placed a crew member on board

to assist. They assessed the engine with the crew and ascertained the suspected fire was more likely an engine part failure. ‘My crew then rigged a stern tow and helped take the vessel on safely to its berth in Gosport Marina, where its crew were very glad to get back on dry land and in the warm.’ In total the operation took two hours and was GAFIRS’ ninth incident of the year.

Four call-outs for GAFIRS lifeboat in weekend of rescues VOLUNTEERS at an independent lifeboat station were tasked to assist four separate vessels in distress over a weekend. Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS), based at Stokes Bay, Gosport, was first mobilised by UK Coastguard at 8.30am on Saturday, June 2. A 28ft yacht had broken down in the main shipping channel outside Portsmouth Harbour and was placed under tow by GAFIRS Lifeboat crew, who safely took it back to its mooring in Gosport. On June 3, GAFIRS was called into action a further three times. The first incident came at 1.15pm when a yacht near Cams Hall Golf Club issued a pan pan emergency distress call when it lost power.

Coastguard teams assist GAFIRS Lifeboat crews located the vessel and placed it in an alongside tow. With the help of Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team, it was returned safely to its berth at Royal Clarence Marina. At 4pm UK Coastguard tasked GAFIRS to assist a 40ft catamaran that had got stuck on a special marker buoy near Osborne Bay on the Isle of Wight. The skipper had attempted to free the 40ft vessel but was unable to.

A GAFIRS crewman managed to manhandle the vessel free and it safely made its onward passage. However, as the lifeboat was returning to station, a distress call was issued by a 21ft power boat near Fishbourne. It had also suffered engine failure and the lifeboat towed it back to Camber Dock, Portsmouth. GAFIRS coxswain Mike Allen said: ‘This weekend shows the benefit of conducting regular patrols of our local area, as it means we are quite often in the right place at the right time and able to offer a prompt response to those requiring assistance. I’d like to thank our volunteers who have worked incredibly hard this weekend on call outs to keep our local waters safe.’

Three calls in 24 hours for GAFIRS Lifeboat volunteers to help others VOLUNTEER lifeboat crews were called upon by the Coastguard three times in just over 24 hours to assist people in trouble. The lifeboat located the men just off the beach as they were making their way back to shore. GAFIRS coxswain Steve Ray said: ‘We checked the three men were safe and well and that they were happy to make their way back to the shore themselves. ‘Although they didn’t need our help, we’d always rather be alerted by sharp eyed members of the public just in case. ‘If members of the public think they see someone in trouble by the water they shouldn’t hesitate in calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard.’ GAFIRS is an independent lifeboat, based at Stokes Bay, Gosport and is not part of the RNLI.

Burning jet ski and man with neck injury assisted A JET SKI that burst into flames and began to sink and a man who sustained a serious neck injury were assisted by GAFIRS. The first incident occurred around midday on Sunday, June 24, when UK Coastguard tasked GAFIRS to assist a jet ski in trouble off Daedalus Slipway, Lee-on-theSolent. The jet ski had burst into flames and was beginning to sink.

The Seafarers Sailing Club rescue boat was afloat at the time and managed to assist the jet-skier and when GAFIRS Lifeboat arrived on the scene, its crew helped get it ashore safely with the help of Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team. Just after 2pm, a boat beached itself just outside the Lifeboat Station and requested help for one of its passengers who had suffered

a serious neck injury; he had fallen awkwardly from a rubber ring that was being towed by the vessel. GAFIRS crew man Jake Robinson – whose full-time job is an ambulance paramedic – treated the casualty. He said: ‘We placed the casualty in a neck brace to isolate him from further injury and took him to the station where ambulance crews treated him further.’

Birthday call-out for GAFIRS senior helm A 40FT SAILING YACHT which had suffered engine failure was towed to safety by an independent lifeboat. The vessel, which had two people on board and also had issues with its sails, was at anchor in Stokes Bay, Gosport, on Tuesday, April 24, when UK Coastguard paged GAFIRS to help. The lifeboat was launched just after 8am and was on the scene in a matter of minutes. Senior helm Brian Pack, who was celebrating his birthday at

Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team met GAFIRS Lifeboat at the marina where they helped bring the vessel alongside in the berth and issued safety advice to the sailors. The incident was GAFIRS’ 24th of the year.

Speedboat rescue shown on BBC1

THE AFTERMATH of a speedboat trip which nearly ended in tragedy was the second GAFIRS incident to be featured on the BBC One programme Close Calls: On Camera. The series looks at incidents which almost ended in disaster. The footage features the crew of Gosport Lifeboat, who were

on routine patrol in Portsmouth Harbour when the drama unfolded. They were alerted to the emergency by its volunteers back at the lifeboat station who spotted the drama unfolding. The vessel had been overcome by the weather with a large wave smashing the windscreen

and then swamping the boat, prompting it to sink. A family of three had gone overboard and were drifting towards the shipping channel. Their lifejackets were in the boat and floated away. The rescue can be found on BBC iPlayer by searching for Close Calls: On Camera – Series 5: Episode 19.

Woman airlifted from Solent Fort A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital from a luxury hotel in The Solent after becoming seriously ill. The 35-year-old had been at a party with friends on Spit Bank Fort when she started to drift in and out of consciousness around 10.30pm on Wednesday, May 9. Friends dialled 999 and two lifeboats from Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service were mobilised by UK Coastguard. Two ambulance paramedics met the GAFIRS Lifeboat crews at the station in Stokes Bay to be transferred to the fort. GAFIRS’ smaller inshore lifeboat (ILB) was launched immediately to transfer two crew to the fort to assist the Coastguard Rescue 175 Helicopter, which had also been mobilised, with a high line transfer.

GAFIRS Lifeboat at the fort with the Coastguard helicopter GAFIRS coxswain Steve Ray said: ‘The ILB was first on scene and put two crew on board the fort to assess the casualty. She had been fitting and drifting in and out of consciousness. ‘We soon followed the smaller boat with the lifeboat and transferred two more crew

members on to the fort and the paramedics.’ GAFIRS crew readied the roof of the fort for the winchman, who descended and helped ready the casualty for transfer to hospital. The woman was then airlifted to Queen Alexandra Hospital for further treatment.

Not all lifeboats are the same – including GAFIRS IF you were in trouble at sea, or in the water at risk of hypothermia or drowning, you would be really happy to see a big orange lifeboat rushing towards you to help. You would probably be really grateful and quite probably keen to make a small donation to the organisation that helped you, thinking that all lifeboats are the same and belong to just one, huge organisation. But that’s where you would be wrong. Did you know that there are some 64 independent lifeboat organisations in the UK? Did you know that many have been

by Peter W Brown Operations director established for decades? Did you know that most, if not all, are run by volunteers? Did you know that arguably one of the best, independent lifeboat stations in the UK is right on your doorstep? GAFIRS has been saving lives at sea since 1969. Staffed by volunteers from all walks of life, GAFIRS operates as a declared rescue facility to UK Coastguard and is on call 24/7, 365 days of the year. Here in the Solent, the busiest recreational waters in

the UK, we are especially well served by independent lifeboats. Just across the water from GAFIRS is Ryde Rescue, Sandown & Shanklin Inshore Lifeboat, and Freshwater Lifeboat. In the west is Solent Rescue and Hamble Lifeboat. These six independent lifeboat charities, like GAFIRS, exist to save lives at sea. So the next time you see a mass of RNLI promotional literature, or think about making a donation, please think about the UK’s independents too, who may not be foremost in the public’s minds, until you need us!

32ft yacht with suspected engine fire is escorted into harbour by GAFIRS and tug A YACHT with a suspected fire and another with engine failure kept volunteers at an independent lifeboat station busy over a Bank Holiday weekend. Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service was first launched by UK Coastguard on Sunday, May 6, just after 6am to assist a 32ft yacht which was emitting large amounts of smoke in its cabin. The vessel, which had four people on board, had left Gosport Marina and reached Outer Spit Buoy in The Solent when the engine started smoking and the crew suspected a fire. GAFIRS Lifeboat was quickly on the scene and evacuated the crew. Two lifeboat crew were placed on board the casualty vessel to investigate. GAFIRS coxswain Steve Ray said: ‘My crew investigated and it was believed the smoke

GAFIRS crewmen boarded the vessel and towed it to safety was being caused by oil on hot engine parts. After liaising with the Queen’s Harbour Master (QHM) it was decided we would tow the vessel into Portsmouth Harbour.’ QHM mobilised a tug boat to escort GAFIRS Lifeboat into the harbour to help dowse the vessel should the fire escalate. The casualty vessel was placed alongside in Camber Dock where Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service investigated the source of the fire. Mr Ray added: ‘The fire service deemed the vessel safe

and that no fire had occurred – blaming the smoke in the cabin on the oil we had suspected. We took the vessel under tow again as a precaution and placed it alongside back at Gosport Marina.’ On Monday, May 7, at around 4pm, GAFIRS was called to a 23ft sailing vessel with engine failure, which was anchored off Gilkicker. The vessel was placed under tow and taken safely back to its berth at Hornet Sailing Club, near Haslar, Gosport. The incidents were the 26th and 27th of the year for GAFIRS, based at Stokes Bay, Gosport.
