Las Vegas is the official home of SEMA, the biggest automotive aftermarket expo in the world! Officially called the Specialty Equipment Market Association, it features some of the craziest cars imaginable. Over the years SEMA has grown to showcase the aftermarket business, allowing both big and small car brands to experiment with new concepts. If you’re not familiar with SEMA, let us be the ones to tell you that this year’s show was huge. It filled the Las Vegas Convention center, both inside and out. Inside, entire halls were each dedicated to racing and performance, wheels and tires, restyling and car care among others. Outside was host to the Ford Driving Challenge where drift and racing demos were taking place all day, with opportuni6 • carbonlv.com | December 2013 | be:CALM

ties for patrons to get a chance for ride-a-longs. Most every car and parts manufacturer was there to showcase their aftermarket goodies for the automotive world. Everything from reasonably priced cars to one of a kind gems were able to be seen modified at SEMA. Vendors especially looked forward to showing off this year’s popular Subaru BRZ and Scion FRS platforms. When it came down to the unique and attention grabbing, Japan’s Liberty Walk 458 and GTR they were both sights to behold. So much to see and not enough time to soak it all in. This really was an automotive enthusiast’s candy store.

SUBIE INVA

Ten years ago, with all the vendors in town on the week of SEMA, a group of guys got together and decided to throw an event for fellow car enthusiasts. This year, with the help of Zenkai Motorsports and Subaru of Las Vegas,

Flat4 has been able to put together yet another successful Subie Invasion event. Subie Invasion has grown to be a huge gathering of incredible cars and people who simply love and appreciate Subaru products.

8 • carbonlv.com | December 2013 | be:CALM

65 cars registered for its car show and at least 200 people showed up to take part in Subie Invasion's 10th Anniversary, making it the best turnout yet. However, Flat4 didn't stop at having nothing more than a car show. Just

across the lot at Silverton Hotel and Casino, were others letting loose in autocross, drooling at the view of a few SEMA show cars, and enjoying the food and company of multiple vendors. As if that wasn't enough, let's not forget the

appearances of the ESX drag car, Global Rallycross cars, and none other than rallycross driver Bucky Lasek and Marty from Youtube's Mighty Car Mods! Couldn't make it out this year? Don't worry, as Flat4 plans to do it

again, bigger and better, next year. To find out more information visit subieinvasion.com or like them on Facebook at facebook.com/subieinvasion Story Lailani Albano | Photography Eric Hall

ake no mistake, this not her boyfriend’s car. “Every penny, every mod, every part of this car was my heart and soul and wallet being opened.” Two years on, Bryanna Gass’ passion for her 1993.5 black Toyota Supra is apparent from the fully built engine to the custom upholstered interior. Bryanna fell in love with Supras after visiting Insane Speed, a speed shop near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. There she first eyed a black mini-tubbed Supra. “I’ve always been into

fast and aggressive things”. Her gut reaction was “Okay, I need that car,” but walked away from the sticker price. Later, the owner of Insane Speed contacted her with an offer she couldn’t refuse. A 1993.5 stock, six speed Supra with 60,000 miles for less than the first model she encountered in his shop. The only condition being that she build it with Insane Speed. “Since then, all the rest is history.” Her MKIV, affectionately named Charlotte, is fully built and produces 810rwhp and 723rwtq. be:CALM | November 2013 | carbonlv.com • 15

Like nearly every Las Vegas resident, Bryanna is an import from somewhere else. Born in British Columbia, her family arrived in the States when she was a toddler. Today, she is the managing member of her family owned and operated business, Designers Workshop. “I run a wholesale interior décor company, so I manufacture draperies, bedding, upholstery—things like that.” Designers Workshop works with dozens of designers across the Las Vegas Valley on projects Bryanna describes as “highend residential and hospitality work.” The upside for Charlotte? Bryanna used her professional skills to customize the interior of her Supra. Bryanna dedicates her spare time to her Supra. The built 2JZ-GTE long block is fitted with a single Precision 6765, dual ball bearing turbo. The car also has a 4” intercooler with custom piping, a custom intake manifold, and a cold air inlet. This ensures the motor will receive air that is as dense as possible. RC 1200cc injectors with twin Bosch 044 pumps supply all the fuel needed (E85 and 91) for over 800rwhp. An RPS Triple Carbon clutch sends that power down to Racing Hart C5 wheels wrapped with Nitto NT05s. “When I got my triple carbon clutch, everyone at the shop stalled the car, except me.” Acknowledging her special touch with Charlotte, Bryanna confidently states that “Nobody drives this car like I do.”

16 • carbonlv.com | December 2013 | be:CALM

The hard work Bryanna put into building Charlotte is paying off. Her sponsorship with Nitto Tires allowed her to be featured in their booth at SEMA Show 2012. Later in the year, she won Best Female Entry at Import Face-Off Las Vegas. In the past two years, she was featured in a number of international magazines. This year, she placed 2nd in the Dyno challenge at Supras In Vegas — only missing the top spot by a single horsepower! All of her success is not stopping Bryanna. She has more ideas for Charlotte. Due to the effect that 810rwhp has on a set of 275 width street tires, Bryanna plans to mod the rear of her

car to fit 345 width Nitto Drag Radials. Despite her love for Charlotte, Bryanna recently purchased a daily driver to visit construction sites for work. Unfortunately, she was in a car accident that

Bryanna gives credit to a number of people who helped her along this journey. When talking about her fans, she immediately exclaims, “Thank you!” Insane Speed remains close to her heart for the work they put into her car. Remaining true to Charlotte’s roots, Bryanna continues to be loyal to the speed shop for making her dream a reality. ”I will never take my car anywhere else. I will never let my car be touched by anyone else.” She also credits her boyfriend, Taylor, with being her “number one support system,” as well as her family and friends.

“I’ve always been into fast and aggressive things” damaged her newly purchased SUV. Bryanna was so calm, the police joked that she was driving impaired. As Bryanna recalls, the cops couldn’t believe that she could damage her new SUV and not “give a $#!7. Bryanna’s explanation was simple. “You gotta understand sir, my other car is way better. I’m just happy it wasn’t the Supra.”

otorcycle stunting and drifting. What do these two have in common? Shiro Kato, that’s what. Or who, rather; A Las Vegas law enforcement officer that has his own story to tell about his roots, where his passion came from, and how it translates out on the streets. Officer Kato has had his own taste of the fast life. Like most people in Las Vegas, Shiro made the trek from Los Angeles to start a life here in Las Vegas. He looked up to Las Vegas Extremes, a riding and stunting group. “Man, I want to be as good as them. I just kept practising. I would ride with a lot of the older

guys who are somewhat professional riders now.” Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. As people started moving away and starting their families, Shiro found himself losing touch with his love for this sport bike and needed to reignite the passion. He found the light at the end of the tunnel. Literally. Sitting in traffic, at the end of the McCarran Airport underpass Shiro spotted a truck sporting “Udrift: Learn to Drift”. He called them up and soon enough found himself at the

Las Vegas Motor Speedway for his first taste in drifting. After going about once a month to U-drift for a while, he decided to make an investment and purchase his very own drift car. He opted for the very popular 240SX which local drift shop Get Nuts Lab, welded the differential. Another upgrade entirely, was soon to follow when he traded in his CBR1000 for a fully

built Pro-AM SpecR 240SX. With his new 240SX, Shiro entered his car into a Vegas Drift event. He got familiar with the grassroots drifting community and even tried to purchase coilovers from Vegas Drift head Nick Dizon. Everything had finally fallen into a perfect place. The happiness was short lived however, and he was forced to get rid of his newly found drift car. This guy just can’t get a break!

This hardworking man, with his wife and kiddos at home took a break to re-evaluate his automotive passion. But his wife saw how much this was hurting him. She knew how much it meant to him as well as his kids. Shiro remembers fondly about taking his youngest out on to the track drifting. “I remember when my son was about 5 years old and I took him drifting for his first time. I looked over to see if he was doing okay in the passenger seat. He was screaming! But not screaming because he was scared, he

was having so much fun screaming and laughing.” Shiro knew how happy drifting not only made him, but his family too, so as a joke one day, Shiro approached Nick of Vegas Drift, with the idea of buying his 2006 350Z. With some hesitation, Nick agreed to it and soon Shiro was back in the game. He thanks his wife for giving him the thumbs up to buy the 350Z. In another lucky move, Shiro had purchased a drift ready car and was eager to get back onto the track. The stock motor pushing 300HP even before mods and bolt-ons was enough to get this car sideways. A KPR steering angle kit keeps it sideways along with some help from the Cusco RS 2 way differential enabling the rear wheels to transfer the power accordingly to each

wheel. When Shiro is not drifting, he enters his car into shows, the most recent being Import Face Off 2013 here in Las Vegas. At IFO Shiro placed first for Best Stance sitting low on WORK Equip wheels, with KBEE coilovers. At the award ceremony, when his name was announced, his youngest ran up and accepted the trophy for him. He would not let go, and was proud to say that it was his daddy’s car that won.

Shiro keeps his passion for drifting close to his heart and plans to keep on drifting. However, he keeps his family even closer and drifting has become somewhat of a family affair. Who knows, maybe his kiddos will inherit the 350Z next. “If my kids are good, which they are, they just might get their own cars to modify and drift soon too.” For now the 350Z is all his own; he’s earned it.

THANK YOUs: I want to thank Nick at Vegas Drift for selling me his car. My wife for allowing me to buy the 350Z. Also Wrong Fitment Crew who are a cool group of guys, and Ray for rolling my fenders and installing the canards.

Bay area native Amber Basgall, has called Vegas her home for almost 5 years now. She has been active all her life with wakeboarding, hiking, and gymnastics. She coaches gymnastics for fun, and loves to help others improve. The gymnastics was certainly a plus for her job in town now. Amber is a trapezist in Cirque du Soleil’s show “O” at the Bellagio. When not working, she is always finding something to keep herself busy. “I’m an active person. I have to be doing something all the time. My boyfriend can’t stand it! It actually gives him anxiety.” On her days off, Amber will find anything and everything possible to do. She can always look for the next project while working on her car. She tells us about her dreams for it. 26 • carbonlv.com | December 2013 | be:CALM

Dreams are what started Amber Basgall’s love for her 2008 Subaru STi. “I always told myself, one day I would own a white 2008 Subaru STi. I knew exactly what I wanted down to a T. I finally have the car of my dreams.” So now with the car of her dreams, her first plan was to modify it, right? Wrong. “What was really important to me was owning the car first. I wanted to drive the car for what it was.” The turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16 valve flat-4 aluminum block and head has drawn in varying opinions. But it’s exactly what draws in a Subaru owner. The 2008 Subaru STi came off the showroom floor with over 300HP, so yeah, we can certainly appreciate that Amber wants to enjoy her car and keep the motor stock… for now.

“...everyone assumes that you don’t work on your own car. But, I don’t let anyone else touch my car, and I do all the work myself.”

Having another dream fulfilled; driving her car for what it was before investing time and money into it, Amber spared no expense when it came down to her baby. She changed the entire color of the car going from stock white to a charcoal color with red metallic flake, painted by Pacific Custom Paint here in Las Vegas. She even helped the entire process by wet sanding the car herself. Starting with “small upgrades” as she puts it, with a Harman Motive downpipe and Magnaflow exhaust, it only grew from there. Full racing suspension is sitting on Volk VRG2 wrapped in Falken Azenis. Her show quality interior includes, not one, but 2 Sparco Speed seats, Sparco harnesses, attached to an Excite Auto harness bar. Attention to detail to obvious with the

interior wrapped in suede with red stitching. The time would come however, when Amber would need inspiration or assistance from friends and she found that in local community Flat4. The Flat4 community is a group of people with their interests in all things Subaru.“I could go to them and ask ‘Hey what’s your opinion, or what could I do?’” A good group of friends that always had the information when she needed it. A community and support system was nice to have around when Amber thought of what work to do next with her dream car, and that’s the thing; it is Amber who put in all the hard work. “What’s hard about being a woman in the car world is that everyone assumes that you don’t work on your own car. But, I don’t let anyone else

touch my car, and I do all the work myself.” All of Amber’s work so far on her car has not slowed her down. She has plans of swapping the current motor in her STi, into her 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS. What’s next for her STi? Hopes of a flat-6 motor with a larger turbo. We say to her this, “Dare to live the life you have dreamed for yourself. Go forward and make your dreams come true.” This woman is not scared to make her dreams come true. THANK YOUs: “Big thank you to Subtle Solutions and the owner Brad. He has been really great and has sponsored some of my parts. Mike at Zenkai Motorsports, Subaru of Las Vegas, and the Flat4 community.”

Story Lailani Albano | Photography Lauder Corea and Eric Hall It's 1997 in Hawaii when three guys got together and formed not only a team, but a family. This passionate group of people, this family of tight-knit individuals, is now known to the community as Team Mansu. Mansu, meaning "reckless" in Ilocano, is a team of enthusiasts that has shown love for everything from Imports to Lowriders. With members in Vegas, Hawaii, and California, Team Mansu's family has now grown from three, to at least a hundred members across these three states. Like any other car crew, Team Mansu makes an appear-

ance at as many meets as possible. However, what makes them different, what makes them a family, is that they get together as often as possible, just to hang out, and enjoy each other's company over some barbecue and booze. What happens if one of their cars break down on the side of the road? They know better than to worry, since at least five Mansu members are likely to show up to help their brother or sister out. They not only look out for each other, but also for those in need. They have taken part in multiple fundraisers throughout the year,

such as the school drive at this year's End of Summer showcase, the Final Drive at Vapors Union for those affected by the typhoon in the Philippines, and more recently Toys for Tots. As far as future plans for Team Mansu? Well, after being in the game for 16 years, the crew seems pretty set with plans to continually show their love for their cars, their community, and more importantly, their family.

21 year-old Kushtrim Vllasa was born in Kosova, Albania. He moved to Las Vegas when he was seven and has grown to find himself creating a bond with Team Mansu just five months ago. "These people are all real. They're like a family to me. I have their back, and they have mine. That's all I need to be surrounded by." Working at the McCarren airport for Southwest Airlines, "Kush" drives to work everyday in his 2011 Honda Accord. Previously owning a CRX, when it came time to buy a new car, the Honda Accord wasn't necessarily his first choice. He started off by going to a Jeep Dealership with plans to look at a 2003 Civic for no more than $8,000. However, Dad simply wasn't on board with the idea.

Kush soon found himself at a Honda dealership where he spotted the Accord and knew that this was going to be his first brand new car. He drove it off the lot that day and has started to modify it just eight months ago with a new set of Varrstoen wheels and a whole new front end, with a Mugen grill. It's just a start for his Accord, as he has some major plans for it in the next couple of years. "It's going to be crazy. There's going to be a lot of work done to it. It's going to be a surprise!" says Kush. However for now, he's happy in knowing that he has a reliable car, with nothing to worry about. He takes good care of it, drives it right, and knows it's going to last him a long time. Thank You: Teddy, Gianni Mora, Team Mansu, My Family, and My Family back home.

Vincent Pascual Vincent Pascual, Mansu's Vice President, starts his day off like any average father; drinking a cup of coffee, reading the paper, and cooking breakfast for his kids. However, once Vince's kids are off to school, you can find him in the garage, cleaning his car, and getting it ready for the drive to work. He works as a Teppanyaki Chef at Caesar’s Palace. Back home in Hawaii during the early 90's, Vince's love for Lowriders lead him to a greater love, his wife. Her first words to him? "If you want to date me, you have to drive my car." At the time, Vince had no clue how to drive stick, so she taught him

"I used to watch my dad working on his car everyday, and that's what got me into the car scene, watching my dad." It didn't take long for Vince to follow in his father's footsteps. Soon after driving it off the lot, he started modifying his car by changing out the stock exhaust and intake. Trying to get his oil changed at the dealership, they informed him that his warranty had been voided. To Vince, that was just a cue for him to go all out with his mods. He

Interesting hobbies: I’ve been into MMA training for about the past year or so. I love it and can’t seem to get away from it. Biggest Pet Peeve: People who use the word “rubbish” rather than “garbage”. Oh, and also people who are just plain rude. What do you do when you’re not modeling? I am currently in my masters program for Counseling. I see my clients and try to save the world (laughter). I try to help people get to a good state of mental health. Worst job: That would probably be my first job, I worked at Sonic. I totally told my boss, if you put me on those skates, I’m walking out of this job right now! Luckily, he was on my side and didn’t make me use the skates after all. Christmas wish: I want a motorcycle! A small Ninja at first, then work my way up. But in all seriousness, just happiness all around- no drama, just goodness in everyone’s heart!

What cars have you owned: Just my scion XB. It’s my first car and my baby and I would never let it go. I have these chinese characters on it that say “think outside the box”, and the other says “fridge on wheels”. It’s tested and true! A person who spoke Chinese, once, read it and just started laughing. Dream car: Audi R8. They should lower the price on those, make it a little more realistic. Just sayin’. One thing you want to accomplish: Just to get my career going in counseling and live (more than) comfortably, but still stay humble. I see modeling as more of a fun hobby. Twice a year Las Vegas is home to Import Face off, a racing series that travels across the country. This month’s event was huge, featuring a car show and ¼ drag racing. With IFO being in it’s 11th year, they are only proving that car shows are alive and well, and can only get bigger and better from here. The showcase featured popular show crews, with a wide range of show cars from track ready Evos, to low and slow VIP cars, and even family cars like the Scion XB. Show goers had a lot to be impressed by, because there were at least one hundred (if not more) cars at IFO, simply there for the showcase. This

didn’t include the drag portion. If you were at the show, you didn’t have to be in the stands to know you were at a race. Tire smoke was able to be seen from anywhere on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway grounds, along with all the noise that your average 9-second car would produce. Because you know, a 9-second car is something you see on the streets everyday. Yeah right! These amazing machines built by car lovers were working their hardest to bring home a trophy. The staging lanes were filled with high hopes and high horsepower.

Shop Car Feature: Twisted Motion 1995 Nissan 240sx

TWISTED MOTION

Would like to thank their sponsor FastWayRacer for their continued support!

Zenki s14 Pink Machine Twisted Motion Nissan 240sx

We want to you know that when you lay eyes on Twisted Motion’s Zenki S14 240sx, it was made to be a machine to represent themselves. Upon close inspection, you can see how this shop used their extensive knowledge of the S chassis. With so many new drift cars opting for a 2JZ or LS1 swap, Twisted Motion keeps it old school with a good ol’ SR20DET. Don’t be fooled by this “basic setup” though, this is a fully built SR20DET, including upgraded pistons and rods, and an upgraded Garrett GT30 76R turbo. When Twisted Motion set out to build this drift car they looked at how much abuse the car would see on the track. They set to reinforcing the body with custom fabricated dimple dies, and a custom fabricated roll cage. A customized massive angle kit gives the car that extra edge when hitting it sideways. Were they worried about hitting anything while on the track? With a custom bash beam put in place, that alleviated the headache. This isn’t your normal daily driver. Twisted Motion put solid work into creating a machine that is track-ready, tested, and trued. SPONSORS: FastWayRacer
