Welcome Since Capital Fringe was founded in 2005, we have

1

been continuously asked: “Why does DC need a Fringe?” As we embark on the journey of our 5th anniversary year, we find it critically important - maybe now more than ever - to have an open-access performing arts festival in the District. Capital Fringe strives to maintain the open-access policy of the Fringe, ensuring performers can take part in a vibrant Festival without being subjected to artistic vetting or selection. DC is full of committees, institutions, special event art promoters and politicallyappointed individuals who curate and filter the performing arts. They determine ‘artistic value’ for audiences, and often communicate to many artists that their story/ work does not have a place. We are leaving these decisions up to the people. We believe in you the Audience and in you the Artist. We believe in the power of artistic natural selection and we invite you to create, explore, attempt, fall short, and succeed with us. To risk. We approach our work and our mission as an organic process: things ebb and flow and we respond to energy taking its natural course. We advise you to approach the Festival in very much the same way – be adventurous! Follow your instincts and go see something you never thought you’d like - instead of being frozen in indecision for two hours. If indecision is your thing however, then come nurse a cold microbrew at the Baldacchino Gypsy Tent Bar. There are many free, live music and performance offerings going on at the Baldacchino throughout the Festival, and we’ll let you hang out all day - at least until its time to go home.

Capital Fringe is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in the summer of 2005 with the purpose of infusing energy into performing arts in the Washington, DC region through our annual Fringe Festival, year-round Fringe Training Factory and other programs. Our mission is to connect exploratory artists with adventurous audiences by creating outlets and spaces for creative, cutting-edge and contemporary performance in the District. Capital Fringe encourages artists to develop their talents and express their artistic visions without curatorial barriers.

What is capital fringe? From its beginning, Capital Fringe has been a major contributor to the cultural life and

character of the District of Columbia, as well as encouraging the economic growth and social well-being of the City. Capital Fringe received the 2007 Mayor’s Arts Award for Innovation in the Arts and the 2007 Momentum Award from the Downtown DC BID, and was also a finalist for the 2009 Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in Service to the Arts. 2006 With minimal resources and few staff, the first Capital Fringe Festival featured 96 shows and garnered an attendance of over 15,000. • At Home in Penn Quarter – Fringe was located entirely in the Penn Quarter neighborhood with 18 Fringe-run venues as well as ‘Find Your Own Venue’ performances all over the District, including one in a Georgetown swimming pool. 2007 In the 2nd year of the Festival, the Fringe increases its appetite for transforming nontraditional spaces into performance venues. • Transforming Spaces – The Scientarium, in a former hardware store on D St NW, was inspired by 19th century medical operating auditoriums. Fringe also transformed a vacant space on 7th Street NW into a box office, art installation and performance venue. • Expanding into New Neighborhoods – Fringe begins its expansion into other District neighborhoods, with performances on H Street NE and the 14th St corridor in NW. • Audiences Choose Favorites – 2007 was also the first year of the Pick of the Fringe Awards, which gave audiences an opportunity to vote for their favorite shows in the unjuried festival. 2008 In the third year, Fringe continued to expand and grow the Festival in new ways. • Fort Fringe is Born – Fringe took over a city block on New York Ave NW, creating FORT FRINGE. This venue, once the famed A.V. Ristorante Italiano, which had been in existence for nearly 60 years, hosted two performance venues and a central location for audiences, artists and staff to come together: The Baldacchino Gypsy Tent - a tented, cabaret performance space and beer garden. • First Fringe Fanatic and Directors’ Award – Mike Riley, who saw 47 shows during the Festival, was the first Fringe Fanatic. The Directors’ Award recognized Children of Medea, a production by Sue Jin Song that embodied what producing in the Festival is all about. 2009 Our fourth year saw further development in the Fringe/Artist relationship and offered a wider array of programs. • Fringe’s Youth Movement – Fringe partnered with the Sitar Arts Center to create the YouthLed Training Factory, a residency program that culminated in young Artists producing their own work at the Festival, telling their stories, and learning to become self-producing Artists. • The Green Plan – Fringe actively worked with Artists and audiences to understand how to be more “Green,” and featured The Free Store: a shop where people could meet to exchange tradeable and recycled items and further build a sense of community around the festival. • FAST Arrives and Fringe Makes a Movie – Fringe started a new live music series featuring 2 local bands and touring acts at Fort Fringe. Festival Director Scot McKenzie’s Mr. Fables, a short film about someone drawn to the Fringe, was created in the run-up to the Festival check it out on our website. • New Performance Series – fallFRINGE begins with performances of hit shows from the Festival returning to DC for a series of encore performances.
