HOME!

A for-sale sign appeared at a house off Vosburgh Road in Halfmoon. Amanda Halliday spotted the sign and started dreaming. But, she needed help getting started. So, she dropped by our Clifton Park Branch and got moving toward a great Mortgage. “CAP COM guided me and helped me make the best choice for a Home Loan,” Amanda said. Amanda completed a Mortgage pre-qualification via phone calls, e-mails and a convenient online application. Licensed Mortgage Expert Jason Tedford helped her choose from Mortgage options with features including: • No PMI on select Mortgages.* • Little or no closing costs or down payments. • Local origination, underwriting and servicing.* Our Experts helped Amanda determine that she could afford the house by taking advantage of an FHA Mortgage.

ACHIEVERS Meet our Top Employees of 2013 The flag bearer Chris Caradori can do it all. He can manage a branch drive thru, help the Deposit Services Team, or carry a giant CAP COM flag to inspire fans at the annual ValleyCats baseball tournament for financial institutions. Chris’ efforts in Deposit Services, branches and on the field added up to an Employee of the Year Award for 2013. “CAP COM brings out the best in me. I want to deliver great service to members and fellow staff every chance I get,” Chris said. Man with a plan Chris Foundas “gets it,” according to his supervisor. Chris is a Project Development Manager who recently stepped in at our Lending Department to “make life easier,” as one coworker put it. Chris helps with everything from creating reports in minutes to automating print and fax hubs. He relies on I.T. and marketing expertise to help teams of busy Home Loan Experts work more efficiently. He was honored with a Top Support Award for 2013.

Brunswick’s MVP If you’ve been to our Brunswick Branch, you probably know Priscilla Luste. Priscilla’s main role is as an insurance and annuities expert but she’s always ready to support fellow staff or a member in need. That makes Priscilla the unofficial Brunswick Branch MVP and Top Sales Award winner for 2013. “I enjoy helping members make smart insurance choices, but I am always willing to step in during busy times to lend a hand,” Priscilla said. Master of the details Donna Curtin is a master of Mortgages. She knows the details of everything from a Construction Loan to an FHA Loan. What’s more, she is always willing to help fellow Mortgage Experts at Homeowners Advantage. That’s why she was named Top CUSO (Credit Union Subsidiary Organization) Award winner for 2013. “My knowledge of Home Loans can be a useful resource for members and fellow employees seeking answers,” Donna said.

A true ‘Advantage’ Rob Snyder has helped hundreds finalize Mortgages to make home ownership dreams come true. As a Senior Mortgage Specialist at Homeowners Advantage, Rob is known as an encyclopedia of Mortgage knowledge. But, he also knows how to deliver great service using a friendly and helpful demeanor. That’s a big reason why he was a Top Sales Award winner for 2012 and 2013! She’s got raving fans Robin Maynard often answers the phone when a Credit Union employee calls in with a computer glitch. That can be a stressful moment but Robin has a knack for solving problems quickly, which has helped her gather up some big fans and win a Top Support Award for 2013. As an Information Systems Associate, Robin helps staff in branches and corporate offices. She is patient but also resourceful. Her knowledge of quick P.C. fixes can often deliver a solution in minutes or seconds. For Robin, helping others begins with getting in the right frame of mind.

“I try to see things through other people’s eyes. I take care of things quickly so they can keep moving,” Robin said. Simply the best A member recently told us that he’d keep his CAP COM account despite a move to the West Coast. One big reason for that choice: Contact Center Associate and 2013 Top Service Award winner Rebecca Simpson. Rebecca delivers personal and friendly service over the phone and in person. She is also a “walking knowledge base” for Credit Union products and services. Almost every question thrown her way is answered immediately. “I treat every member like a friend. I take pride in delivering genuine service in everything from balance inquires to Home Equity Loans,” Rebecca said. Mortgage products are offered by our Mortgage Team, Homeowners Advantage (HOA), which is a subsidiary of CAP COM FCU. Mortgages in New York State only. Your savings safety net Many families are living without a savings safety net. More than 40 percent of U.S. households have almost no savings to rely on after a health crisis, job loss or other emergency, according to a recent study released by the Corporation for Enterprise Development. CAP COM works to help families build their savings with tools such as special certificates and Club Accounts. Our School Banking Program is teaching kids at more than 70 local elementary schools to save by making deposits in the classroom. “Nearly all of us could benefit by saving more. The skills our School Banking kids are learning by making deposits at school will help them as they become financially independent,” said Manager of Educational Initiatives Nicolle Monast. Families can secure a child’s savings in a CertifiKID.* A child’s money will grow faster than in a regular Savings Account. When parents choose to add money with automatic payroll deductions, there is no minimum balance to get started. You can also save automatically with payroll deductions and make withdrawals at any time without penalty with Special Club Accounts. With popular options like our Holiday Club Accounts, you can keep a balance of just $100 to earn dividends. Grow your money over time with a regular Certificate. If you are saving for long-term goals, then a Certificate is just what you’re looking for. What’s more, our 21-Month Allowance Certificate** allows one penaltyfree withdrawal. You can also work with the Credit Union to lay out a financial plan. Building a plan can be done in minutes and has saved some members hundreds each month! Stop in at any branch location or call us at (518) 458-2195 and speak with a helpful CAP COM Associate. You’ll get real-world strategies to lower monthly expenses, including reducing debt by consolidating high-rate debt into a single CAP COM loan.

*Penalty for early withdrawals. Available in 18- or 36-month term. **One withdrawal of any amount may be taken penalty-free throughout the term of the certificate. After that, maximum withdrawal without penalty is $2,500. A minimum amount of $5,000 is required to open the certificate. $500 minimum to earn APY.

A NEW THREAT: MOBILE MALWARE Most of us are familiar with computer viruses. But, did you know that your smartphone or tablet is at risk too? Industry experts say that viruses aimed at mobile devices, known as mobile malware, are on the rise. These new threats are aimed at obtaining everything from your personal banking information to your list of contacts. “The growing popularity of smartphones and tablets have attracted the attention of cyber criminals who see them as a great opportunity to get their hands on your information and money,” reads a story reported by the computer and mobile security company McAffee. More than two-thirds of smartphone users don’t realize that their device could be infected with mobile malware, according to a recent study. Malware that targets Android smartphones has grown by more than 70 percent over the last few months and other devices are also coming under attack.

You can take steps to protect yourself from mobile malware. Here are a few tips to ensure that your information and your device stay safe: • Only download apps from a reputable app store. • Install anti-virus software on all your devices. • Before downloading an app, read through its privacy policy to make sure that it will not share your personal information. • Review your mobile statements for suspicious charges. If you do see such charges, contact your service provider immediately. • Always use a secure wireless network when browsing and downloading apps. • Never respond to text or voicemail messages with personal information. • Never click on a link in an e-mail, social networking site or message from someone you do not know.

Protect your Checking Our overdraft plans protect Checking Accounts against declined VISA® Debit Card transactions and returned checks due to insufficient funds. Youth Calendar

SAVE CASH EVERY DAY AT COLLEGE Experienced students often say: “Save early and save often.” And, they’d be right. Here is a good example: A bottle of water purchased in bulk from a grocery store can cost as little as 20 cents. At a vending machine, you may pay $1.50. If you drink five bottles a week, that’s $5.25 saved weekly, $21 monthly and $252 yearly. Buying water in bulk for your dorm room is just one smart way to save. The best advice for high school students budgeting for college is: Find creative ways to save every day and stay focused on the difference between wants and needs. Our Certified College Planning Specialists and College Bound workshops can deliver similar lessons and big-picture college planning tips for parents and students. Look for our next workshop in October or give us a call and get started today!

Data charges may apply for Mobile Banking Apps.

Tips to save for college: • Pay yourself first. Save a portion of the money you make at a summer job or from family gifts for the school year. • Stay on campus. Some students make frequent trips home during holidays and school breaks. The travel expense can add up. Plan out any trips home and look for ways to stay in your dorm room or apartment instead. • Open a Young Adult Checking Account, enjoy free* withdrawals at any ATM on campus or around the world. Plus, monitor your balance each day on your smartphone with our iPhone and Android Mobile Banking Apps.

CAP COM

Financial Services

WHAT’S NEXT ON THE ROAD OF LIFE? There is no way to know what obstacles you may face on the road ahead. But, by choosing the right Life Insurance for yourself or your family, you can gain peace of mind along the way. Let us help you get started. CAP COM members are entitled to a complimentary, no-obligation Life Insurance review with one of our Insurance Representatives. Chances are we can save you money with equal or better coverage. Life Insurance Life insurance, payable if you die, can provide a surviving spouse, children and other dependents with the funds necessary to maintain their standard of living. It can also be used to help repay debt and fund education costs. The amount you need depends on your situation. If you make $100,000 a year, have a sizable mortgage and two kids headed to college, you could need $1 million in coverage. Disability Income Insurance1 When you are unable to work for an extended period, a long-term disability policy is activated, replacing a portion of your lost income. Some employers offer company-paid disability income insurance. Typically, such coverage is only partial and/or short-term in nature.

Securing your future income

As a result, many people seek to purchase an individual disability income insurance policy. When shopping around for disability insurance, try to get a non-cancelable policy with benefits for life, or at least to age 65, and as much salary coverage as you can afford. Insurers will usually cover up to 65 percent of your salary. Generally, you should have total coverage equal to two thirds of your current pretax income.

Our Insurance Representatives can help you shop among high-ranking providers to find a policy that delivers peace of mind. Our noncommissioned Representatives offer unbiased advice and no-obligation quotes. Set up an appointment today • Call (518) 782-0209 • Visit www.capcomfcu.org/lifeinsurance • Ask at any branch

A Fixed Annuity2 might be right for you. They offer taxdeferred earning power at competitive rates and a source of income that is protected from unpredictable markets.
