A NEW STAGE It’s the form of racing that is truest to how most people ride mountain bikes. It’s a massive group ride, sharpened by course-marking tape, timing systems, spectators, prizes and perhaps even championship titles. For some, it’s test of new skills—maybe even a first taste of two-wheeled competition. For everyone, it’s a test of mettle and endurance. And for the best riders in the world, it’s a test to see who can consistently push themselves and their machines to the outer envelope of speed. Over and over and over again. The concept of enduro mountain bike racing is not particularly new. Take Mark Weir. He’s a battle-hardened beast of a guy who will likely ride more in a month than most mountain bikers will ride in a year, or two, or three, and he’s been championing events that resemble the modern form of enduro racing for years. Jérôme Clementz, too, has been a mainstay in this world long before it branded and packaged for internet consumption. Clementz is a force of nature; one of those rare birds that can look fast and smooth, no matter what. He’d look fast on a ride to the market. In 2013, the Enduro World Series was formed, attracting a mix of former World Cup XC champions, former World Cup DH champions, and a ton of enduro specialists. It became the perfect melting pot of mountain bike disciplines—each with their own strengths to add to the equation. Jérôme had his mix dialed from the start, winning the inaugural Enduro World Series and becoming the first-ever EWS Champion. As the years have passed and the sport has progressed, that pool of talents and ideas has pushed the sport forward. The bikes, components and rides have evolved to be able to handle tracks that can resemble anything from epic alpine descents to World Cup Downhill courses to explosive pedaling sections that wouldn’t be out of place in an Olympic XC course. Ultimately, though, the enduring appeal of enduro lies in the fact that, at every level, it’s essentially a timed version of what we do with our friends every chance we get. Ride to the top. Regroup. Drop your post. Enjoy the descent for all its worth. And repeat.

GROUP THINK Everyone is available, ready and more than willing to roll. The dreamers put together the route and the planners make sure there’ll be enough light in the day to survive. It’s time to turn lines on the map and dimly recalled directions into the sense memories that sustain us through the screen-time work week: the chirps and the pines and the breeze, the feel of the corners, the lines, the vistas, the quiet camaraderie of pedaling through new terrain, the adrenaline charge of hanging it out on unfamiliar descents. It’s a good crew; differently skilled but evenly matched. We roll as one, separating a bit when the speed comes knocking, passing when the climbs get punchy, but always pausing to regroup, check in, share tales of our near misses and smallscale heroism before rolling out again. The ride turns out to be every bit the bruiser we hoped it would be – punishing and rewarding in equal measure. Legs are fading and hydration packs are empty as we roll back into civilization, craving the end but not really wanting it to stop. We get both at the local oasis, sharing beers and war stories, reliving the moments while constantly reminding ourselves that we need to do this again sooner than later. Without saying a word.

WORLD CUP XC
THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING Things certainly have changed since entire world fell in love with XC mountain bike racing—back when riders like Tinker Juarez and Alison Sydor and Cadel Evans dominated the podiums. Back then, they rode aluminum hardtails, essentially road bikes with smaller wheels and bigger tires, and the races rewarded climbing power and stamina over courses that could last 2 ½ hours or more. There were massive crowds and professional team setups with trucks and hospitality. There were heroes cheered on and heartbreaks forgiven by fans in national-flag face paint, draped in team colors or simply standing there, screaming as if the noise itself could inspire a bit more power from aching legs. The sport is different now. Today’s racing is more explosive, more aggressive and more relentless. Course designers have seen to it that today’s tracks are steeper, punchier, more physical and more technically demanding. The sport’s governing body shortened the length of those premier events as well, which means there is no rest for the fastest riders in the world. No rest, that is, if they want to win. And of course, as the sport has evolved, we’ve had to design better tools for these riders to work with: bikes that are faster, tougher, lighter, quicker handling, and more capable on those heinous descents. Not to mention that full-suspension XC bikes now weigh less than what most Tour de France bikes weighed back when the UCI awarded its first MTB World Championship Rainbow Jersey. The result is a spectacle that almost defies belief. Hyper-fit athletes battling it out, going full-throttle from the gun, punching it up crazy climbs and hurling themselves down majorconsequence descents wearing nothing more than spandex and Styrofoam. It’s an amped up, stripped down version of the racing we used to know, yet one thing remains the same - the crowds. They still line the courses, still decorated in flag-themed face paint, wearing the names of their heroes on their shirts, still yelling and ringing cowbells as though the race depended on it. Only the crowds are bigger now. And they’re louder than ever.

CANNONDALE IN THE KINGDOM The process of discovering a new stash of trails generally yields some pretty good material for bar stories. It could be how you swiped right when Tinder presented you a shot of Scalpel-worthy singletrack, or followed that locally-plated truck with a tailgate pad for an uncomfortable amount of time, or how you spent the first day of your trip picking ticks off your Lycra while you hiked in hopes of finding hero dirt. At Kingdom Trails in Vermont, though, your bar stories are all about actual riding adventures, because here you don’t waste time seeking out the goods. They don’t hide their gems away; they lay ‘em out on a silver platter and welcome everyone to partake. No matter what your skill level, the locals are happy to help you find the kinds of trails you dream about at your real job. Built primarily on the privately-owned lands of over 50 cooperating business and individuals, Kingdom Trails wholeheartedly embodies the concept of community. Ordering lunch in a red barn-turned-bike-shop, I was greeted by two nine-year-olds happily spinning themselves around on the tractor-seat stools. They introduced themselves and launched into detailing the best places to spot a bridge troll or minidragon. I offered my own reports of mushroom circles and lady slippers, all the while marveling at how engaged and genuine they were. It was at this moment that I realized that Kingdom Trails is so much more than just bikes and adventure and the fleeting fun of singletrack. It’s a shining example of how goodwill, cooperation and hard work can not only build and strengthen a community, but can also radiate that positivity outward in the stories and experiences of all who visit. The week of the trip passed far too quickly, as it does when true fun is being had. The combination of flowy singletrack, perfect bikes and the welcoming, fun-loving vibe of the place cemented this trip as one for the books. Or rather for the bars, no Tinder stories required.

THE ROOTED ROUTE “It’s the only type of bike I ride out here,” says Speight Drummond. “Really, it’s the only way we could ride a lot of these trails at all.” Speight and his younger brother, Travis, are among a young group of riders in New Hampshire that have fully embraced (and now fully require) 27plus wheels for their style of riding. In the rough, rooted and rocky terrain of their backyard, these young riders have turned to this somewhat young wheel size to keep the speed up and the fun levels pegged. After a bit of an awkward adolescent phase, the 27plus wheelsize has found its footing over the last handful of years. It’s found appreciation with the right riders, the home on the right bikes and the locations that make this bigger rubber sing. While the wheels amplify any rider with full suspension, the hardtail is where these wheels can make the most profound change. “Skills out of the box” we keep saying. It’s more than true. It’s enough to make full-time full-sus riders look longingly at a hardtail for the first time in years. There’s a misconception out there on the trail about these mid-fat tire size lovers. People think they are slow and only want to ride loaded down and camp under the stars. They assume that these bikes can’t be made to move fast. The Drummond brothers put that myth to bed.
