VOLLEYBALL • SEASON PREVIEW

That last loss that ends your season, keeping you from your goal, always stings. Coaches always hope it leaves a bitter taste in their players’ mouths, motivating them throughout the offseason to atone for it next season. With the Canisius College volleyball team, it appears the four-set loss to Iona in the semifinals of the 2010 MAAC Championship has served that purpose since last November. The Golden Griffins start their 2011 schedule this weekend at the La Salle Invitational in Philadelphia. Canisius has three weeks of non-conference action before starting its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule with hopes of claiming the program’s first MAAC Championship.

meeting what mine have always been for this program.” Outside Hitters Canisius has to replace one of its outside hitters as four-year starter Renee Lettow graduated in 2010. The Griffs will use two players — senior Danielle Brawn and sophomore Emily Elek — in their main rotation.

“Joanna has always been the poster child for type of player we want in our program,” Hummel said. “She hasn’t experienced a ton of on-court success, but you would never know that. Her role is to work hard and raise our competitive level. When given the chance to play, she will help our team compete.”

Brawn became the team’s most productive outside hitter at the end of her junior season. The Brockport, N.Y. native had four kills in the fifth set against Niagara in the regular-season finale and carried that momentum over to the MAAC Championship. Brawn set a season high in kills in each of the final three matches, capped by 14 against Fairfield in the third-place match.

“It wasn’t just that we lost, it was that we just didn’t compete in that match to the level we were expecting,” 11th-year head coach Cathy Hummel said. “We didn’t give Iona anywhere near our best match. Getting beat by a better team has never been an issue with me, but not playing to our ability and losing makes it that much worse.”

Coupled with Brawn will be Elek, who played for the first time in 2010 after missing the 2009 season with a knee injury. Elek made 27 starts last season, ranking second on the team in kills per set (2.60). Her 302 kills were the second-most by a freshman in program history and the Wescosville, Pa. native ranked sixth in the MAAC with a 2.91 kills per set average in conference play.

Where that feeling has been most apparent is throughout preseason camp. Hummel feels her team came back in the best shape “one through 12” of any team she’s had at Canisius. That’s encouraging for the Griffs’ coach because that’s meeting her expectations, allowing them to develop individually and as a team during the weeks leading up to the start of the regular season.

“Danielle Brawn has all but met her potential as a player. She’s playing with confidence and is stronger and faster than she’s ever been,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Emily has maintained her speed and power from last year. Because of their mindset and physicality, we will have the fastest offense that I’ve ever played.”

“The biggest difference in our team’s mentality has been the transfer from thinking they can to expecting they can,” Hummel said. “Our team finally has raised the standard and their feelings and expectations are

season. Burt set a careerhigh in digs in two of the final four matches, including nine digs against Niagara.

Junior Allyson Severyn

Warner will serve in a utility role for the Griffs, being able to play at any position except for setter. The Lancaster, N.Y. native has been getting practice repetitions at four positions — outside hitter, middle hitter, right side and back row. Last year, Warner came off the bench to give the starters a break and provide energy for the team when it needed to be lifted. Chrzanowski looks to serve in that same type of role this year, a talented freshman who won’t be relied upon to be a consistent contributor right from the start. “Olivia and Jess Warner will be ready to go off the bench in hitting or for defensive purposes,” Hummel said. “They’ve been good in competitive situations throughout camp. We want them to be able to go in, score points and give our starters relief.”

After Brawn and Elek is the trio of senior Joanna Burt, sophomore Jessica Warner and freshman Olivia Chrzanowski. Burt, a co-captain for the Griffs, brought a spark off the bench in a number of occasions in 2010, especially late in the

Middle Hitters/Right Side The strength of Canisius under Hummel has been the middle hitter position, a trend that continues for the 2011 Golden Griffins. That strength becomes even better when it’s led by the 2010 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year — junior Samantha Good. Good became the first player in program history to earn that award after finishing sixth in the conference in kills per set (2.95), second in attack percentage (.326) as well as first in blocks per set (1.03). Good even picked up her play later in the season, recording doubledigit kills in six of the last seven matches. The Rochester, N.Y. native became the first Golden Griffin since 2006 to earn FirstTeam All-MAAC honors. Along with Good are senior Layne Adams and sophomore Roxanne Hernandez. Adams, a second-year team captain, set career highs in kills, attack percentage and blocks during

her junior season. The Newtown, Pa. native had doubledigit kills in five matches and ranked sixth in program history with 88 block assists. Hernandez was another Golden Griffin who came on at the end of the season. The 6-foot-3, Medford, N.Y. native hit .412 in the last six matches, setting a career high in kills three times in the last six matches. “We will have three middles in the rotation at all times, Hummel said. “Sam should play strictly in the middle with Roxy and Layne playing in the middle and on the right side. “Our trio of middles, along with our depth on the outside has made us encouraged for the offense this season.” Setters and Libero An overlooked fact in volleyball when an offense is struggling is that good passing leads to those opportunities for the front row.

double-double in five of the last nine matches.

The Golden Griffins can look at their libero and setter positions as strengths heading into the season.

Backing up Davis at the setter position is sophomore Sydney Palka. The Tonawanda, N.Y. native appeared in 31 matches as a freshman and was third on the team in service aces. Along with Palka at the setter position is junior Emily Carpenter, who Hummel values as someone pushing the team and a player who came back in the best shape of her career this year.

Junior Allyson Severyn was named the MAAC Libero of the Year after the 2010 season when she finished with a program-record 628 digs. Severyn, named to the preseason All-MAAC team at the beginning of August, had 17 matches of 20 digs or more last season, including each of the last five matches. The Lancaster, N.Y. native also led the team with a 94.4 service reception percentage.

“This is most confident Janelle has been in setting the ball in her career at Canisius,” Hummel said. “Sydney has been tremendous during preseason camp. She will push Janelle and there will great competition every week in practice to see who gets that position.

“A coach always feels satisfied when she has players who are recognized as the best in the conference at what they do,” Hummel said. “In just two years, Ally has shown to be at the top of the conference as a libero, and what’s just as encouraging is she continues to get better.”

Junior Samantha Good

“Sydney definitely will get some looks early on in non-conference matches to show what she can provide our team at the setter position.”

At the setter position, the Griffs have senior Janelle Davis, a rare fourth-year starter at such an important position. Davis ranks second in program history in career assists and has 800 assists, 25 service aces, 200 digs and 50 blocks in each of her first three seasons. That versatility can get overlooked, but Davis especially flashed it at the end of the season with a

Schedule/Outlook The Griffs start the season with three straight non-conference tournaments away from the Koessler Athletic Center. After four matches at the La Salle Invitational on the season’s opening weekend, Canisius heads to Ohio for the next two weeks, facing stiff competition at the Akron Invitational and the Best Western Plaza Falcon Invitational in Bowling Green. “Our opponents on the opening weekend appear to be fairly comparable. It will give us an opportunity to test most if not all of our players to see what they’re capable of in a game setting,” Hummel said. “Our second and third weekends, along with the home matches against Kent State and Buffalo, appear to be a little more challenging on paper.” Part of the reason for the

5

challenging, road matches in non-conference play is the beginning of the schedule to MAAC play for the Golden Griffins. Canisius starts its MAAC slate against three of the top teams in the league — Fairfield, Iona and two-time defending league champion Niagara — all away from the Koessler Athletic Center. “It was an honor to be selected second in the preseason coaches poll and a testament to where our program is at right now,” Hummel said. “We’ll be tested early in our conference schedule, but if we win those three or lose those three, it’s a long season where we will look to continually improve and get better to give ourselves a chance in the month of November. That level of play on the court as well as the team’s attitude can be attributed to the senior class. The quartet of players — Adams, Brawn, Burt and Davis — has gained a lot of experience during its first three years and has set the tone as the Griffs pursue a conference championship. “This is largest senior class, in terms of number, where collectively the character and work ethic can’t be questioned,” Hummel said. “That sets a great example for the rest of our program and the underclassmen. “How we finished last year hasn’t set right with them. They want to prove and show what this team’s ability is.”

Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

2011 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Cory Conacher finished his career with 12 school records, including the program’s career points and goals standards. Maura Frauenhofer placed second at the 2010 MAAC Championship, the highest finish by a Griff since 1997.
