A Message from the Chairman

As

many of you know, there has been a great deal of controversy surrounding one of d owntown Sarasota’s annual events, Thunder by the Bay. Produced by Suncoast C harities for Children, the motorcycle festival raises millions of dollars for special needs individuals and families in our community, and in one weekend this past January, the event had an estimated $9 million e conomic impact on our community. Ron Soto, What you may not realize is that because SDMA’s Chairman of this ongoing controversy surrounding Thunder by the Bay, as of right now... ...the City of Sarasota has put a moratorium on all events in 2017. That’s right—events that usually are planned up to a year in advance and always draw thousands of people downtown to our streets and our parks cannot be scheduled for next year. Did you happen to attend the Sarasota Seafood & Music Festival presented by the SDMA in late January? With literally thousands of attendees, the two-day event was a home run for the SDMA, thanks to Bill Kinney and Paragon Events, the festival's producers. It is events like the seafood festival—and countless others throughout the year —that raise funds for the SDMA. And where do these funds go? Back into our city to do the things that, in other communities, are typically paid for by the city, but here in Sarasota are not. As an example, this past holiday season, the SDMA refurbished all of our Christmas lights on the street poles, and we also purchased new ornaments. And for the upcoming holiday season, we have purchased a brand new, 30-foot Christmas tree for Five Points Park that will replace the 30-year-old tree that truly has seen better days. SDMA also funded the development of the new city map and, within the last 18 months, launched The VOICE of the Downtown Merchants—two very important marketing tools that support our merchants and promote our downtown community. Without our events and festivals, the SDMA will not have the funds to make downtown Sarasota a more appealing and inviting place to visit, dine or shop. Personally, I can remember when downtown used to be the only place to shop in Sarasota. And I also was here when d owntown became a ghost town with the development of Gulf Gate's shopping centers and the mall in South Sarasota. I cannot imagine coming to Sarasota as a tourist during the winter months with absolutely nothing to do here…can you? In a recent conversation with Bill Kinney, who has produced many art shows and festivals in downtown Sarasota and throughout the state, Bill told me, ”Cities all over Florida are trying to get special events to come to their communities to stimulate activity.” And I ask you this: Why is our city placing a moratorium on events in downtown Sarasota that stimulate activity? Here’s the bottom line: These events and festivals are good for downtown business and good for our merchants. Just ask Sully over at Patrick’s 1481—the recent art show held on Main Street between Orange Avenue and Links Avenue was “outstanding” for his business; the restaurant was jam-packed both Saturday and Sunday. If you like our special events and festivals and want them to continue, send us an e-mail at sdmavoice@gmail.com. I will be going before the city commissioners again to fight this moratorium. Yes, there is strength in numbers, and I am counting on all of you to join me. 3

Celebrating a Vibrant Dining Scene In the Spotlight: Pho Cali Vietnamese Noodle House By DM Parr, Features Writer

T

hroughout 2016 we will be spotlighting the amazing diversity of restaurants within walking distance of Main Street in downtown Sarasota. Options include an array of international dishes, including Vietnamese, Indian, French, NY deli fare, Thai, Mediterranean, Japanese, Italian and Peruvian, as well as seafood, burgers and more. Unlike chain restaurants, these venues are run by chef/ owners dedicated to offering high-quality food made from scratch and featuring fresh, local ingredients.

delicatessen already has found a strong following. In Summer 2015, one downtown restaurant closed its doors due to construction at its 1578 Main Street location, but recently reopened, much to the relief of its loyal fans. Pho Cali Vietnamese Noodle House offers authentic cuisine from Southeast Asia. Owners Harrison and Kimberly La, who are husband and wife, offer a wide variety of noodle and rice dishes, along with house specialties that include fish or pork cooked in a clay pot, vegetarian options and do-it-yourself rolls—grilled shrimp or pork with a

The downtown dining scene also is constantly evolving. Some have been favorite spots for years, such as Caragiulos Italian Restaurant, which was established in 1989 with the third generation of the same family still offering comfort food in a lovely, historic setting at 69 South Palm Avenue. Others have just debuted, including Sol's NYC Delicatessen at 1991 Main Street. This New York-style

variety of fresh and flavorful ingredients that patrons wrap in rice paper at their tables. Pho Cali also serves up an appealing selection of vegetarian dishes, as well as kid-friendly meals. Can't dine in? The noodle house has an extensive takeout menu if you don't have time to relax and enjoy the eatery's welcoming ambience. “We make everything from scratch, even our own hot sauce,” says Harrison. The noodle house originally opened on June 5, 1995, and immediately became a local favorite. One loyal customer even created a Facebook page for the popular eatery. When construction was completed, the restaurant reopened on November 12, 2015, to an enthusiastic response. “It’s been great! People were excited that we re opened,” says Harrison. “They have been very supportive, and we are grateful for that.” The reopening of Pho Cali garnered so much attention that it recently was featured on local television station Photo, at left: Pho Cali Vietnamese Noodle House’s delicious dish, Spicy Lemongrass Chicken served with rice. in Downtown Sarasota WWSB. Harrison was interviewed by Chef Judi Gallagher for her dining segment on ABC 7 News at Noon. The taping was held at the restaurant, which was fully packed with its usual lunch crowd. Chef Judi, a writer and teacher with more than 30 years of culinary experience, says Pho Cali offers “the best Vietnamese dishes on the Suncoast” – high praise for this small, yet bustling, family-run spot. For Chef Judi’s complete review of the noodle house, visit http://www.mysuncoast.com/dining/videos/. Homemade, authentic Vietnamese fare created with the freshest and healthiest ingredients and conveniently located on Main Street—Pho Cali Vietnamese Noodle House is a downtown dining destination that promises a flavorful visit. Pho Cali Vietnamese Noodle House is located at 1578 Main Street in downtown Sarasota. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The restaurant closes daily between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., and is closed on Sunday.
