Hospital discharge enabled maniac to murder mum, 60 THE Tenerife beheading which horrified the world should never have happened, according to an official report released this week.
Paranoid schizophrenic Deyan Deyanov, who murdered Mrs Jennifer Mills-Westley in Los Cristianos 3½ years ago, failed to receive the correct treatment from a North Wales hospital seven months earlier. The damning report, compiled by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), said there were “clear shortcomings” in the care Deyanov was given at Glan Clwyd Hospital before he killed the 60-year-old pensioner in May 2011, seven months after being released from a psychiatric ward. And without those shortcomings, Deyanov might not have murdered Mrs Mills-Westley, it concluded. He was discharged after “inappropriate diagnosis and unsatisfactory after-care” - but doctors believed the homeless Bulgarian was feigning mental illness, according to the report. The 31-year-old, homeless Bulgarian, sentenced to 20 years in a secure Spanish unit in February 2013, had previously been diagnosed with acute paranoid schizophrenia and, when arrested, admitted using crack cocaine and LSD. Kate Chamberlain, HIW Chief Executive, said: “There were clear shortcomings relating to the care and treatment provided to Deyanov during his time with North Wales mental health services. “However, we do believe that had the issues we identify within the report been addressed, the likelihood of such an incident occurring might have been significantly reduced.” Mrs Mills-Westley, who had retired to Tenerife years earlier, feared she was being followed while out shopping that
fatal morning. She took refuge in social security office, where she asked for help. Staff said she was in tears and looked frightened. But she left after security guards checked the street and said the coast was clear. Tragically, her killer was still around. He followed the pensioner into a nearby store, grabbed a large kitchen knife from a shelf and stabbed her 14 times in the neck, before running out with her severed head, to the horror of onlookers. The 8½-inch blade was found in a bag Deyanov was carrying when he was tackled and overpowered a few minutes later. Deyanov, well-known to Tenerife police, had been arrested at least four times in the months before the murder for violent offences. He was sectioned at Candelaria Hospital before being bailed in early
February 2011. A warrant for his arrest was issued three days before the killing, but officers were unable to locate him. The victim’s anguished daughters, Samantha and Sarah Mills-Westley, who had campaigned successfully for an inquiry into her murder, said in a statement: “Had Betsi Cadwaladr [the University Health Board, which runs the hospital] recognised that Deyan Deyanov was a young man with very serious mental health problems, then our mother would still be alive today. “We cannot put into words the sense of betrayal we have experienced with our dealings with the health board. “They have continued to prolong our pain by obstructing our pleas for truth, and have become a faceless organisation, hiding behind bureaucracy. The way they have treated our
family has been appalling.” In 2010, while visiting relatives in Flint, Deyanov had been treated at Glan Clwyd Hospital’s psychiatric ward. But he was discharged and travelled to Tenerife. The HIW report said he was subject to prejudice during his treatment, with some staff believing he was speaking gibberish rather than his own language. Its scathing summary recorded that “several aspects of care were not delivered to a sufficient standard, resulting in the formation of an inappropriate diagnosis and unsatisfactory after-care. And there existed a culture where a prejudiced view of Deyanov was fostered by some staff.” The report continued: “Also, a greater level of engagement with the family of Deyanov would have assisted in developing a greater un-
derstanding of his background and history. “Deyanov’s diagnosis of malingering (feigning illness), formulated during his second admission to the Ablett Psychiatric Unit, directly affected subsequent decisions regarding the follow-up and support following discharge.” Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, commissioned by the Wales Government to conduct an independent report following the family’s campaign, said it was unclear whether adequate steps had been taken to ensure that due regard was given to his well-being once he was discharged. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which carried out its own internal review prior to the inquiry, apologised to Mrs MillsWestley’s family and said lessons had been learnt. Chief executive, Professor Trevor Purt, said: “The report identifies clear shortcomings in the care Deyanov received from the health board. “I wish to apologise on behalf of the board for these, and emphasise our commitment to continue improving the quality and safety of our mental health services over the coming months.” Deyanov was first treated by the board when his aunt contacted police in June 2010
after growing concerned about his “strange behaviour”. He had started telling people he was to become famous, said the report, which led to him being admitted under the Mental Health Act and, initially, diagnosed as “hypomanic” - a psychotic illness - with evidence of being an illicit drug-user. The report described how he discharged himself three weeks later against medical advice, although a medical note on his departure had stated he had “no clear mental illness”. Samantha and Sarah’s statement added: “Today marks a significant milestone for our family. Three-and-a-half years after the brutal murder of our mother, we now know the truth leading up to those tragic events on Friday, 13th May 2011. “We sincerely hope that our mother’s murder will not be in vain, and that the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) will recognise the repeated shortfalls in the care they provide and act on the issues identified in this report. “After much lobbying from our family, the Health Inspectorate of Wales agreed to undertake this review. “They have completed a fair, transparent and robust investigation, and have treated us with care and compassion throughout; for that we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks.” Mrs Mills-Westley had long settled in Tenerife, where she owned two apartments in the Port Royale complex, on the hillside edge of Los Cristianos. One two-bedroom flat was rented out, while she lived in the other and had been resident there for at least 10 years. With one of her daughters living in France and the other in Norwich, she enjoyed visiting them. Tragically and brutally, a maniac put an end to her idyllic lifestyle - and destroyed her family at the same time.

King Felipe sister’s court ordeal still in the balance THE sister of Spain’s King Felipe VI could be tried in court alongside her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, as part of the so-called Nóos corruption case.
A Mallorcan court in Palma, having considered a number of appeals, ruled unanimously last Friday that Cristina de Borbón, daughter of former King Juan Carlos, should remain an official suspect in a tax-fraud probe, which began in 2013. She appeared before a judge in February to answer questions about alleged crimes of tax fraud during 2007 and 2008, and also moneylaundering. Friday’s ruling stated that the infanta, as the princess is commonly known, will be tried for the former offence but not the latter. Magistrates argued in the writ that the infanta knew “her husband’s actions with regard to taxes were irregular”. They also said it was “undeniable” she contributed to “defrauding the Tax Agency”, given that she benefited from money siphoned off from Urdangarin’s companies, without making the appropriate declarations to the tax authorities. The trial is likely to go ahead in 2016, unless the so-called Botín doctrine is applied, which would see Cristina avoid the ignominy of having to sit in the dock. The doctrine, drafted by the Supreme Court, states that an official suspect will not appear in court if the accusation of an offence does not come from the public prosecutor, or those directly affected by the events under examination. And, because neither public prosecutor nor State Attorney’s Office consider the infanta to have committed any offence in this specific case, it could still be shelved.
The corruption scandal, regarding the alleged misappropriation of six million euros of public funds by the non-profit Nóos Institute, which was set up by Urdangarin and his business partner, Diego Torres, and partly owned by Infanta Cristina. The Princess has already denied any wrong-doing in the Nóos case after six hours of testimony. But if her husband is found guilty, she will have to return 600,000 euros, Urdangarin and Torres are suspected of diverting funds paid to the Institute by regional governments for the organisation of sporting events into their own pockets. The Palma court has now ruled on 13 appeals filed by the parties involved in the Nóos case. Among those, only the labour union Manos Limpias maintained its accusation against Cristina de Borbón, while the public prosecutor and State Attorney’s Office rejected any criminal wrong-doing on her part. Her defence lawyer, Miquel Roca, argued
that none of the accusations against her was founded, and that she was “completely removed from” the management of the family company and the alleged fraud offences attributed to her husband, the Duke of Palma. And after the latest ruling, anti-corruption prosecutor Pedro Horrach, who opposes the infanta sitting in the dock, said there was no evidence that Cristina had committed any offences. “I don’t know if she’ll have to go to trial,” he added pointedly. Cristina’s lawyer, Miquel Roca, described the court’s decision to maintain her as a suspect as “surprising”, although he was obviously happy about the shelving of the money-laundering charge, which he considers to be “the most serious”. In 167page writ, summing up three-year probe, Castro says: “There are overwhelming indications that doña Cristina has intervened, on the one hand, to obtain money for her own benefit, and on the other, to facilitate the means for her husband to do so.” 26th June, 2014: Public prosecutor objects. Appeal against Castro’s decision filed by Public Prosecutor at Palma court. “We still don’t know which concrete offences and facts could see Cristina de Borbón named an official suspect,” it reads. 9th Sept, 2014: Appeals filed by defence and prosecution passed to Palma provincial court, which must decide on future of Princess. 7th Nov, 2014: Palma provincial court maintains Cristina as official suspect for tax offences, but not for moneylaundering. Three Fred. Olsen cruisers spruced up for new season FRED. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Black Watch, Braemar and Balmoral ships are in dry dock at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, this month and next in preparation for the 2015/16 cruise season.
It will be the first time so many of the company’s ships will be refurbished in so short a time. Work on the 804 guest Black Watch, which arrived at Blohm+Voss on 4th November, has now been completed. And Black Watch is straight back in the swing of things on Fred. Olsen’s first-ever, sell-out “Mystery Cruise” of 14 nights, W1417, which sails from Tilbury tomorrow (Saturday). Braemar is now in
Hamburg, after which the 929-guest ship will depart on a three-night M1430 “France MiniCruise” from Southampton on Thursday (20th Nov). Balmoral, which carries 1,350 guests, rounds off the planned dry-dock works. The ship arrives on 9th December and
will leave the shipyard to start a two-night, pre-Christmas L1418 “France Mini-Cruise” from Southampton on 19th December. The Blohm+Voss schedule for the three Fred. Olsen cruise ships comprises various engineering works, general refurbishment and inte-
rior and exterior painting. During the dry dock period, Black Watch had 27 cabins on Lido Deck 7 fitted with balcony terraces. These new cabins extend out 1.2 metres from the ship’s bulkhead, providing guests with an increased choice of
cost-effective balcony cabins with access to the outside. During their dry docks, Balmoral and Braemar will also follow on from Boudicca and Black Watch by having Fred. Olsen’s popular “Café Venus” installed on board, serving high-quality coffee and luxury chocolates. The new Café will be created on Balmoral’s Lounge Deck 7 by reconfiguring the Library area to create a more open, sociable public space. On Braemar, Café Venus will be installed on Lounge Deck 5 by reconfiguring the Library area, and the Card Room will be moved and integrated with the Arts and Crafts Centre on Atlantic Deck 3. Mike Rodwell, Managing Director of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “We experience extremely high demand for balcony cabins
across our fleet, and, in particular, on board the smaller-sized Black Watch. And our new Balcony Terrace cabins are an innovative response to this. “We are also looking forward to being able to give guests the experience of fine coffee and chocolates on board Balmoral and Braemar, as guests have already been enjoying on Boudicca and Black Watch.” He added: “Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is pleased to be returning to Blohm+Voss for this important work. Balmoral and Braemar are both well-known to the Hamburg shipyard, as they both underwent mid-section extensions in 2007 and 2008 respectively.” In November 2007, Balmoral was extended by a 30.27-metre section. Braemar followed in May 2008, being extended amidships by a section of 31.2 metres.

First blood to Catalans, but it is off the record! CATALANS voted overwhelmingly for independence in Sunday’s unofficial poll for the north-eastern Spanish region.
Deputy premier Joana Ortega announced that 2,043,226 people had cast their vote, and said the final total would probably swell to 2,250,000. She added that 80.72% of the participants had voted Yes to the two questions asked: “Do you want Catalonia to be a state?” was the first; in the case of a positive response, voters were asked: “Do you want Catalonia to be an independent state?” The “yes-no” response obtained 10.11%; “nono” 4.55%; and blank votes accounted for 0.56%. The results were released with 88.44% of the vote counted. But the ruling Spanish Government, unsurprising, called the vote an “act of political propaganda with no democratic validity”. The non-binding vote went ahead after Spain’s constitutional court ruled out holding a formal referendum in the autonomous northeastern region. Artur Mas, the Catalan regional Premier, described the unofficial, non-binding consultation as a “complete success”, calling it a “lesson in democracy,” and demonstrating that “Catalonia wants to govern”. The Catalan regional
government estimates that there are 5.4 million Spanish citizens over the age of 16 in Catalonia, with 900,000 foreign residents having the right to vote. These figures roughly coincide with those of Spain’s National Statistics Institute, which says there are around 6,228,531 potential voters in Catalonia, regardless of nationality. According to this census, Sunday’s voter turn-out was 32.8%. The country’s central government in Madrid, is vehemently opposed to independence for the region, and Justice Minister Rafael Catalá described the vote as an “act of political propa-
ganda with no democratic validity; a sterile and useless sham that served only to exacerbate the divisions between Catalans and heighten political tensions”. The Minister accused Mas of pushing ahead with the vote to “hide his failure” in holding a proper referendum. Catalá added: “The Government considers this to be a day of political propaganda, organised by pro-independence forces and devoid of any kind of democratic validity.” But Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s opposition Socialist leader, was more conciliatory, saying: “This should herald a
new era, when Catalonia was not outside Spain but at the vanguard of change that would lead to a federal Spain.” However, the Justice Minister was adamant that the Public Prosecutor would evaluate the voting facts and figures and decide whether to begin legal action in the courts. More than 40,000 volunteers helped to set up and run the informal exercise, and Mas told ecstatic supporters: “We have earned the right to a referendum. Once again Catalonia has shown that it wants to rule itself.” The Catalan leader added: “I ask the people in the world, I ask
the media and I also ask the democratic governments in the world to help the Catalan people decide its political future.” Meanwhile, Spanish unionist parties argue that because the ballot was organised by grass-roots pro-independence groups, it cannot reflect the entire wishes of the region legitimately. And Catalonia’s dream of independence from Spain collides with some harsh realities on the streets of Santa Coloma, a dormitory town on the northern edge of Barcelona. Its lively young Mayor, Nuria Parlon, is firmly opposed to independ-
ence, saying it is a “placebo”, which would not solve Catalonia’s underlying problems. The Catalan National Assembly pressure group collected signatures at polling stations on a petition to be sent to the UN and the European Commission, seeking support to help to convince Spain to allow an official referendum. The “need” for nationalism in Catalonia has been fuelled by economic and cultural grievances. The wealthy region of 7.5 million people contributes more to the Spanish economy than it gets back through central government funds.
A group’s growing hope! ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and his Council are backing a project which offers hope to the disadvantaged jobless.
He recently paid a visit to the ecological orchard and vegetable garden in Las Nieves, where a group of 20 vulnerable people have been working and
training in gardening and ecological farming. The initiative was developed as a way of targeting individuals without the means to earn a living. Rodríguez Fraga said: “In a modern society such as ours, we cannot forget our origins - where we come from. This project reinforces that, as well as giving these individuals a future with new potential. “We have opened
some doors to employment for groups of individuals who are more vulnerable - people who can now look for proper work with the training and knowledge they require.” The Mayor added: “This group have now put into practice all the theory they have learnt, and they have developed an ecological orchard and vegetable garden planted with different flowers, vegetables, herbs, etc.
“In doing so, they have contributed to the improvement of our borough and, given the success of this project, we are now considering extending the idea. “And these people who have worked so hard to develop and maintain this plot may continue to work here.” The scheme, a collaboration between Adeje Council and the Red Cross (Cruz Roja), hasn’t just trained the
group in agricultural basics, but also in the value and worth of local production. It has also contributed to the improvement of the environment through the creation of greenhouses, gardens and orchards, etc. Rodríguez Fraga said: “It works to preserve the environment, people can enjoy the local produce grown here and we are helping people who need it most.”
During the training period the students learned about soil management, basic cultivation and use of ecological methods. They were also shown how to use farming implements, their maintenance and upkeep, and disinfection where applicable. Another big plus for the students was that they each received a grant of 200 euros a month during the course.

KEEPING AN OPEN MIND IT has not been a very good week for religion. Two authors have written a book based on ancient text, which has been in the British Library since 1847.
This text heavily suggests that Jesus was married with two children. They also claim that Mary Magdalene was the Virgin Mary. And there had been an assassination attempt on the children of Jesus more than a decade before the Crucifixion, when Jesus was around 20. That takes some explaining. Then there was the brilliant news of the success of the probe landing on a four-billion-year-old comet. Space is always a problem for those who “believe”. Here is an object which is 4,000,000,000 years old, at least. And then there is the 6,000-year-old religious version. The thing is, nobody can, beyond a reasonable doubt, prove or disprove any of it. And as scientists are of-
ten reminded, for centuries, the sharpest minds thought the world was flat. Which brings me to the Night of Mediumship at Showtime this weekend. I interviewed Stephanie Carr on Oasis Fm a week ago and I’ve known Marcus Day for far too many years. They both do something a little different, but what I was taken with is the way they approach the “nonbelievers”. As Stephanie told me “It’s not my job to make someone believe. My job is to pass on what I receive.” Spot on. What people chose to do with the information is up to them. And it’s the same with religion. The different bibles are all open to interpretation, and it’s what you draw from them that is important. Yesterday (Thursday), live on Oasis Fm, Marcus told me my granddad was called Jack. WINGATE School again represented the South of Tenerife in this year’s prestigious Lions International Poster Competition.
The annual event, run locally by Tenerife Isla Sur Lions Club, encourages young people to think about peace and express, creatively, what it means to them - and to share their own unique vision with the world. The posters are evaluated on three criteria at each level of judg-
ing: originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme Peace, Love and Understanding. For many years, Isla Sur Lions Club has fostered a vibrant youth involvement in the community, especially with holidays for under-privileged and handicapped children. Club President Mike Marshall and Edna Goodall, who organises the scheme, were part of the judging team, along with Wingate art teacher Shelby Healey. Individual winners were presented with their awards during a
school assembly. And because the artistic standard shown by these youngsters (aged 11-12) was so high, the judges increased the Highly-Commended awards to four instead of the usual two. The winner and the four merit awards, along with the rest of the entries, were of such a high standard that it took much deliberation by the judges to evaluate the 30 entries. Mishel Zutte’s winning poster has now been sent to Madrid to be judged again at national level, the overall winner to represent
Spain in the international competition. The Grand Prize winner and family will receive a holiday during the awards ceremony on Lion’s Day at the United Nations in New York. The first prize is $2,500 (1,840 euros) with a further 23 prizes of $500 (368 euros). Tenerife Isla Sur Lions Club stalwart Norman Goodall said: “Special thanks go to Wingate School and all those children who gave their time and effort to make this event such a memorable occasion. Each entrant will receive a diploma.”
Baby Ilse is growing up LORO PARQUE is celebrating the third birthday of dolphin Ilse, who was born at the tourist attraction’s dolphinarium. The baby female now weighs nearly 113 kilos, and the trainer team prepared a special cake from fish and jelly for her. Loro Parque is proud of its nine Dolphins - three male and six female - who live together in six pools, with more than 7,000,000 litres of
water, supplied directly from the Atlantic. The Common Bottlenose Dolphin is one of the best-known species of cetaceans under human care, living in coastal areas and shallow water. There are 250 dolphins in zoos and at least 300,000 little cetaceans in nature die every year because of human activities, such as collisions, overfishing, pollution and hunting.

Fit-again Ebola victim claiming 300,000 euros THE Spanish nursing assistant who made worldwide headlines by contracting Ebola and then recovering, is seeking 300,000 euros in damages. Teresa Romero, discharged from Madrid’s Carlos III Hospital on 5th November, will sue the city’s Health Commissioner, Javier Rodríguez, for 150,000 euros for attacking her honour. She is also claiming the same sum from the regional government for putting down her dog, Excalibur, as a precautionary measure. The 44-year-old hospital worker picked up Ebola after caring for an infected patient in the same hospital. She then spent a month there before, finally, winning her battle against the disease. Romero and her husband, Javier Limón, who was also kept in isolation at Carlos III for a prolonged period, will join a criminal complaint filed by health workers against regional health authori-
ties “over failures in the implementation of safety protocols in Ebola transmission,” according to Teresa’s lawyer, José María Garzón. The nursing assistant’s claim against Rodríguez involves statements he made to the effect that she withheld information from doctors in the days prior to her admission to Carlos III, and that she made a mistake donning or removing the protective suit required to treat Ebola patients. Ms Romero said in an early telephone interview with Spanish daily El País while in hospital that she thought she remembered touching her face with a glove while removing her suit. She has subsequently denied recalling the statement. The Health Commissioner apologised following the outcry caused by his public statements, but Romero’s husband rejected the apology and promised legal action to defend his wife’s honour.
Blundell, who spent nearly 20 years competing in top-class motorsport, including Le Mans, met Cabildo President Carlos Alonso during Tenerife’s press conference launch of the much-heralded earlier this month at London’s RAC Club. Alonso invited bids for the construction and operation of the track with a Request for Proposals (RFP), suggesting a necessary investment of 25.7m euros. Deadline for bids is 3rd February next year, so construction will not begin until spring at the earliest. But Blundell simply cannot can’t wait - he’ll be testing the proposed track long before then. Eduardo Pintado, the Cabildo’s Commerce
Councillor overseeing the giant plan - and an ex-racing driver himself - spoke about the Sixties’ British stars who inspired his own passion for motor racing. These racing legends left their mark in Tenerife in that decade, when world-class events were held in the streets of Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz. And the legacy left behind by these drivers cemented them firmly in Tenerife’s automobile hall of fame. Blundell, replying to Pintado, said: “I’d like to follow in the footsteps of those historic British drivers in Tenerife, and be the first to race around the new circuit.” He will be granted his
wish during a trip to the Island next month, when he intends to complete a timed lap of the marked-out Atogo circuit. But in a 4 x 4 off-roader because the designated Atogo area is, and will remain, completely undeveloped then! The Tenerife Island Circuit is designed for FIA certification, and will stage events on two wheels as well as four. Blundell said the circuit had “huge amounts of potential to stage some incredibly-exciting races”. And though the circuit will not be long enough to stage Formula One racing, he will be involved in the project in a consultancy role with MB Partners, his sports management company.
What makes the arena so attractive, apart from the magnificent, all-round scenery, is its availability - less than three kilometres from the South Airport, with easy links to the TF-1 motorway. And the Atogo site is just a stone’s throw from Los Abrigos, San Isidro and El Medano. The track will feature 180-degree views of the Atlantic to the South, with Teide’s volcanic range overlooking it from the North. The combination of striking vistas, sunshine virtually guaranteed, plus an abundance of luxury hotels and leisure facilities close by, makes it an ideal destination for drivers and fans alike. Man-made probe lands on Comet THE historic comet landing of robot probe Philae on Wednesday was hailed as “a big step for human civilisation” by European Space Agency (ESA) chief JeanJacques Dordain.
His ESA engineers breathed a huge sigh of relief as the probe was confirmed to be stable after failing, initially, to attach itself to the surface after separating from mothership Rosetta after its 10-year, four-billion-mile journey to the comet. Then came the cheers and hugs at ESA’s mission control in Darmstadt, Germany, as the signal came through. An overwhelmed Director-General Dordain added: “It’s a great great day, not only for ESA but ... I think for the world!” The spacecraft had to “slingshot” three times around Earth and once around Mars to gather enough speed to chase down the comet. Scientists, who hailed the landing as “a giant leap for mankind”, believe the probe may have bounced hundreds of metres back up off the surface after first touching down. Now, their major hope is that it will stabilise itself and analyse the comet’s surface to reveal how the Solar System was created 4.5 bil-
lion years ago - and the origins of life itself! Philae, the size of a washing machine, was launched from ESA’s Rosetta satellite early on Wednesday and took seven hours to reach the comet. It was the culmination of a 25-year mission for the Space Agency team, and news of the first landing was confirmed to an ecstatic gallery at about five minutes past four on Wednesday afternoon.
There is still concern about the long-term stability of Philae because it is not properly anchored. That’s because the harpoons which should have hooked it into the surface did not fire on contact. But controllers soon re-established radio communication with the probe and began retrieving surface pictures of the comet, which is more than four billion years old and is
hurtling through space at a mind-boggling 40,000mph. It is the first time a man-made object has made a controlled landing on a comet. The unmanned probe will take samples and photographs of the comet, which is a ragged lump of dust and ice, reckoned to be about the size of central London. Philae is crammed with electronic hardware, which is designed
to measure virtually every characteristic of the planet. It has a drill which can bore out samples to a depth of 10 inches, and a British designed instrument called Ptolemy will be used to analyse samples in the craft’s laboratory. The comet is known as 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko, named after Soviet astronomers who discovered it in 1969. Jim Green, from the
NASA space agency, said: “It is our destiny to move off this planet (Earth), and it’s these kinds of steps we must take to do so.” Academic Matthew Genge, from Imperial College London, said: “This is the most difficult landing in space history - like landing a balloon in a city on a windy day, with closed eyes.” Holger Sierks, principal investigator of the science cameras on Rosetta, which is circling the comet overhead, said his team were trying to take pictures of the robot on the surface. They will show little detail because Rosetta is many tens of kilometres away, but at least they will help controllers understand precisely where on the comet the robot has come to rest after its bouncing display. It’s a stunning achievement for the ESA which is much smaller than NASA and get’s much less publicity. Much of the date collected will be used in an effort to try and get a better understanding of how the Universe was created. Scientists believe that a massive comet full of ice and nutrients crashed into the Earth billions of years ago. This collision is understood to have provided the seeds for life, ingredients which are missing on similar planets such as Mars.

Mercadona goes swipe ‘n’ pay
SHOPPERS in the UK are used to supermarkets’ contactless pay terminals, but they have never been tried in Spain. Until now.
Mercadona has invested five million euros in the development and incorporation of the latest contactless technology. Trials have gone well on the mainland, and a spokesperson confirms it will soon be in
all its stores. Once the technology has been rolled out, there will be 16,000 new payment terminals in its network of stores. The new “trust” system, to go cap-in-hand with traditional checkouts, is designed primarily for those with small baskets and those who use cards to pay. Customers can pay for their purchases with “contactless” devices which accept Visa and MasterCard. This, says Mercadona, is “a much easier and faster way to shop.
These new devices for the transaction take place immediately, and without having to type a PIN number into a machine”. Mercadona started the project last February in selected stores and, after seven months of full development, the company launched the test phase in 10 major stores in September. The new service is being introduced on the mainland over the next few weeks, and it will be fully operational in Tenerife from 1st December.
Gomasper goes! ONE of the biggest and bestknown constructions firms in Tenerife has gone to the wall.
Gomasper Construction was in court this week after issuing voluntary bankruptcy and insolvency action. The court appointed administrators to liquidate the company, which was owned by Pedro Suarez, vicepresident of CD Tenerife. According to court papers, the company has assets which include buildings and land worth 14.1million euros, but debts of an amazing 127m euros. It’s a dark day for the Island’s economy and the construction trade in general. Gomasper
was considered one of the finest firms in Tenerife, often drawing praise for the quality of their work. Some their early construction work featured the Parque Santiago complexes in Playa de las Américas, while later offerings included El Mirador and Dinastia in Los Cristianos. The company also had a successful hotel division, but the global financial crash seven years ago scuppered the business. Gomasper was heavily involved in new construction and struggled to gain support for their outstanding liabilities. The property crash saw its value plummet, and the company was left hold properties it couldn’t afford to sell,
even if it wanted to! It’s a massive blow to Pedro Suarez who, until recently, was President of the prestigious Circle of Entrepreneurs and Professionals of Southern Tenerife (CET), a position he held for 13 years until 11th February 2012. He remains one of the largest shareholders of CD Tenerife, and, though this setback sees him lose face, it will not cut into his great personal wealth. There are still court cases against Gomasper yet to be resolved. These include legal cases in Arona concerning planningpermission licences, but these are not directly against Suarez. Construction Gomasper SL had 100 employees before the economic crisis began.

Taxpayers caught up in £2.6bn banks’ disgrace BRITAIN’S Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and two US regulators flexed their muscles this week by fining five banks a total of £2.6bn.
Unfortunately, UK taxpayers will almost certainly have to stump up some of the cash because they own 80% of RBS, which was fined a whopping £399million. The penalties were levied by regulators over the banks’ attempted manipulation by their traders of foreign exchange rates. Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), HSBC, Swiss bank UBS and US banks JP Morgan Chase, Citibank and Bank of America have all been hammered. A separate probe into Barclays is continuing. The fines - a record
£1.1bn by the FCA and £927bn by the US authorities -were dished out because all five banks attempted to rig the £3trillion-a-day foreign exchange market. Separately, Swiss regulator, FINMA, has penalised UBS 134m Swiss francs. Barclays, which had been expected to announce a similar deal to the other banks, said it would not be settling at this time. “After discussions with other regulators and authorities, we have concluded that it is in the interests of the company to seek a more general co-ordinated settlement,” it said in a statement. Martin Wheatley, the FCA boss, said: “This isn’t the end of the story. The individuals themselves will face the consequences.” Several of the banks’ senior traders have already been put on leave,
and the Serious Fraud Office is preparing potential criminal charges against those alleged to have masterminded the scheme. The fines follow a 13-month investigation by regulators into claims that the foreign exchange market - in which banks and other financial firms buy and sell currencies between one another - was being rigged. The huge market, dwarfs the stock and bond markets. Some 40% of the world’s dealing is estimated to go through trading rooms in London, and nearly all trading takes place on electronic systems, operated by the big banks and other providers. Daily “spot benchmarks” - known as
“fixes” - are used by a wide range of financial and non-financial firms to help value assets or manage currency risk, for example. An FCA spkesman said: “At the heart of this action is our finding that the failings at these banks undermine confidence in the UK financial system and put its integrity at risk.” Aitan Goelman, the CFTC’s director of enforcement, said: “The setting of a benchmark rate is not simply another opportunity for banks to earn a profit. “Countless individuals and companies around the world rely on these rates to settle financial contracts.” Chancellor George Osborne said: “Tough action is being taken to clean up corruption in
the City by a few.” All three regulators discovered that the attempted manipulation of the foreign exchange market had been going on for a number of years. The FCA said the failings occurred between 1st January 2008 and 15th October 2013. The CFTC added that its investigation found the traders’ misconduct took place between 2009 and 2012. They found certain foreign exchange traders at the banks had co-ordinated their trading with one another to attempt to manipulate benchmark foreign exchange rates. The CFTC said traders had used private, online chat-rooms to communicate. They had disclosed confi-
dential customer order information and trading positions, and altered their positions accordingly to “benefit the interests of the collective group”. The FCA said the “tight-knit groups” formed by traders at the different banks had described themselves as “the 3 musketeers”, “the A-team” and “1 team, 1 dream”. It said traders had attempted to manipulate the relevant currency rate in the market, for example to ensure that the rate at which the bank had agreed to sell a particular currency to its clients was higher than the average rate it had bought the currency. “If successful, the bank would profit,” added the FCA.

Orphans mobile now, thanks to Helping Hands SUPPORTERS of the Helping Hands charity have raised a mammoth 24,000 euros to provide a mini-bus for Granadilla’s Guardyl Children’s Centre for orphans.
They received their reward in the form of a big thank-you to the charity’s founder, Liz Montague, from Granadilla de Abona Mayor Jaime González Cejas and his colleagues at a special handing-over ceremony. It took place in the
Plaza del Ayuntamiento and Liz, accompanied by some of her valued helpers, said: “We all felt so very proud to be a part of this special day. “I would like to thank everyone for being there, for supporting the charity, and to those who could not make it. This really meant so much, and it is such a proud day for all of us.” She added: “It was a recognition of thanks from the Mayor to each and every person who raises money and always gives help and support to Helping Hands.” Her willing followers accumulated the 24,000
euros, via various fundraisers throughout the years, and Liz couldn’t wait to contact her local Ford dealers for the mini-bus. “The charity is growing and many friends are involved in offering support, which means that more projects will be in the pipe-line,” she said. Volcano victims took selfies
JAPAN’S deadly volcano eruption in early autumn claimed many victims, several spending their final moments taking photographs of the catastrophe!
More than half of the 57 bodies recovered from the peak of Mount Ontake were found clutching mobile phones, with photos of the deadly lava and ash on them. Others were found to have taken snaps of the
ash and lava with cameras or phones just before they perished. The September eruption on the central Japanese island of Honshu, also left a further six people missing. Among the victims was 59-year-old hiker Izumi Noguchi, whose body was found near Mount Ontake’s summit shrine compound. Search-and-rescue teams recovering his body discovered his camera - and among the photographs he had taken were images of a huge cloud of ash creeping ever closer to him. His wife, Hiromi, has
made the images public as a tribute to Mr Noguchi. But she said: “I wish he had fled instead of taking pictures.” Another hiker, 41-yearold Hideomi Takahashi, was found near the summit with his iPhone still working. A family friend posted the photographs online after Mr Takahashi’s funeral, telling local media that the iPhone contained at least six photos from what would be the last few minutes of his life. Most of the bodies were found near Mount Ontake’s summit, where many climbers were
resting or having lunch. Some bodies were retrieved from a trail at a slightly lower elevation. Experts say hikers near the summit might have been hit by rocks falling as fast as 190mph. Most of the ash fell in the first hour of the explosion, according to the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute. Survivors said they fled for their lives as rocks and debris rained down on them as they struggled with hot air and ash hitting their faces. Medical experts who examined some of the
nearly 70 injured said most had bruises, cuts and bone fractures on their back - an apparent sign that they were hit by rocks flying out of the volcano. Some of the injured, reportedly, had damage to their lungs and other organs because of the impact of rocks hitting them. But the eruption caught hikers by surprise. Seismologists have said that increased seismic activity had been detected at Ontake, one of 47 active volcanoes in Japan under 24-hour monitoring, but nothing had sig-
nalled such a big eruption. The death toll is the highest from a volcanic eruption in Japan’s post-war history, exceeding the 43 people killed in the 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen in southern Japan. Ontake, Japan’s second-highest active volcano, last had a minor eruption seven years ago. Researchers say predicting a steam-driven explosion is especially difficult - and even harder with limited information about a peak’s past volcanic activity.

Navy Seal claims Osama ‘died afraid’ ROBERT O’Neill, the former US Navy SEAL who claims to have killed Osama bin Laden, is adamant the al Qaeda leader “died afraid”.
O’Neill said he had used details of the Saudi militant’s death to bring closure to select relatives of 9/11 victims, who heard his story at the 9/11 Memorial Museum earlier this year.. “One thing I tell them is, ‘All right, Osama bin Laden died afraid, and he knew we were there to kill him.” The 38-year-old told the Washington Post this week that he fired two rounds into the forehead of the al Qaeda leader during the 2011 raid on his secret compound in Pakistan. The Montana man also said shots were fired by two other SEAL team members, including Matt Bissonnette, who described the raid in his book No Easy Day. Some special operations service members and veterans are unhappy that O’Neill has taken credit publicly for the killing. But he says he doesn’t care if people don’t be-
lieve him. The muchdecorated veteran is reportedly disgruntled because he lost some military benefits, having left the SEALs before a full 20 years of service. Mr O’Neill spoke to Esquire magazine in a piece published last year, but his identity was not revealed and he was referred to as ‘The Shooter’ only. New York’s Republican Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, who was at the Memorial Museum that day, said that in her many years working with the relatives of people killed in the September 11 attacks, she had never seen them react as they did after hearing O’Neill’s story. “We were in numerous meetings, numerous press conferences … I’ve never seen such an emotional response as I saw in that room,” said Maloney. “I saw men and women just break down crying. It was closure to them. It was important to them to see him, to really hear in his own words why it was important for him to go on that mission.” The ex-SEAL was there for a ceremony marking the donation to the museum of a shirt he wore during the raid.
Maloney, who helped arrange for O’Neill’s shirt to be exhibited, said the people in attendance included families of people who died in the 2001 9/11 attacks and “leaders” from police and fire departments. “People were in tears, and the room was not that big,” said Maloney. “I’d say there were maybe 30 people there. I’d asked to have a ceremony for the shirt donation, and it meant a lot.” O’Neill said he decided to reveal himself as the man who killed Bin Laden after sharing his story with the people at the Memorial Museum that day. The congresswoman also stressed that other residents of New York were intensely interested in the circumstances of Bin Laden’s death. “You could hear a collective sigh of relief from all of New York when Bin Laden was killed,” she recalled. “We are grateful to the Navy SEALs, and to the CIA, and to all the military that are part of training these incredible people.” She added: “The people that I am privileged to represent, they wanted to know what happened to Bin Laden.”

Warren Clarke, the man of many parts ACTOR Warren Clarke, best known for his TV role in Dalziel And Pascoe, died on Wednesday at the age of 67 after a short illness.
His gruff northern accent was familiar to millions who watched him play the taciturn Superintendent Andy Dalziel in the popular BBC drama. The Oldham-born actor played the surly police officer for 61 episodes, alongside Colin Buchanan’s Peter Pascoe. His career actually spanned several decades on stage, TV and film, ranging from Cold War dramas to comedy - and even playing Winston Churchill in the West End. Clarke, born into a poor Lancashire family, was raised by his secretary mother and stained-glass windowmaker father in a council house. His parents died within a year of one another when Warren was in his twenties, leaving him and his sister Beryl, who is 11 years older, a “bunch of photographs and happy memories”. He was conceived when his father returned from the War and wanted to be a footballer until his passion for acting kicked in. “When I told my parents what I was going to do, they said, ‘Good luck, son’.” He worked hard to achieve fame, telling the Daily Mail in 2011 that he was a “lucky b******, although I’ve worked nearly 50 years for this, through the tough times as well as the good times.” His first big-screen appearance could have led to stardom but was affected by factors out of his control. A twenty-something Clarke appeared alongside Malcolm McDowell as Dim, a half-witted yet violently-evil “droog” in Stanley Kubrick’s controversial 1971 dys-
topian masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange, based on Anthony Burgess’s novel. After several court cases implicated the film’s brutal violence, including the murder of a tramp in an underpass by a gang featuring the characters of McDowell and Clarke, Kubrick withdrew the film from cinemas, and it remained rarely shown until its re-release following his death in 1999. With appearances in Coronation Street and The Avengers behind him, Clarke went on to appear in numerous TV series and films in a wide variety of roles. They included a Russian dissident opposite Clint Eastwood in 1982 Cold War thriller Firefox, a violent football hooligan in 1995’s British cult classic ID, and a nouveau-riche, pig-obsessed northern Regency industrialist opposite Rowan Atkinson and Miranda Richardson in Blackadder the Third in 1987. This appearance spawned some of his best-loved lines, flattering his daughter (Richardson) by telling Blackadder: “I’d no more place her in the hands of an unworthy man than I’d place my John Thomas in the hands of a lunatic with a pair of scissors” and “I love her more than any
pig, and that’s saying summat”. Clarke was also known for his starring role in the BBC series Down To Earth alongside Pauline Quirke, about a family who leave the rat-race to relocate to rural Devon. His other brief TV appearances included Lovejoy, All Creatures Great and Small and The Onedin Line. But it was Dalziel and Pascoe which made him a household name. He starred as the ageing, gritty detective in the TV adaptation of Reginald Hill’s stories about the chalk-and-cheese colleagues, which spanned 12 series, from 1996 until 2007. Other notable programmes have included the BBC adaptation of Bleak House nine years ago and Channel 4’s Red Riding trilogy in 2009. His death was announced by Independent Talent Group, the agency which handled his career. A statement issued on behalf of his agent said: “The actor Warren Clarke died peacefully in his sleep on 12th November 2014, after a short illness. “He will be greatly missed by his family and loved ones. At this time, we ask that you respect their privacy in their time of grief.” Clarke’s marriage to his first wife and the mother of his
son, Rowan, ended a few years after his parents died. “Not being there with Rowan (who was 10 at the time) was tough,” he said. “Nobody has
an easy time with divorce. You don’t like what’s happening, but you have to get on with it. But I’ve got a happy marriage now.” Warren met Michelle through friends 30 years ago. They tried for a baby for 20 years and had pretty much given up hope when Michele became pregnant with Georgia. “When I thought it would never happen, it did, then I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m old enough to be a grandfather’,” he said. Actor David Morrisey tweeted: “So sad to hear about the death of Warren Clarke. He was a very special man/a great actor. We had wonderful times together on Red Riding. RIP.’ Chasing Shadows actor Reece Shearsmith, who shared a screen with him in an ITV dra-
ma, called him “a very funny and lovely man”. Emmerdale actor John Bowe, who acted alongside him, said: “Safe journey, Warren. And no arguments on the way.” Writer and broadcaster Tony Parsons said: “Warren Clarke was wonderful for 40 years from Dalziel And Pascoe all the way back to Dim in Clockwork Orange.” Clarke was a lifelong Manchester City fan and his death was mourned by the club. City’s official Twitter feed included a message which read: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Warren Clarke following sad news of the actor and MCFC fan’s passing.” Actor Will Mellor called him “a good friend” and said in a message posted online: “So sad to hear the news. I can’t believe it. Great man.”

The female is more deadlier than the male was forced to publicly recant. I have a feeling that had a woman declined to share a lift with a male she distrusted her decision to wait for the next lift would have been praised by the sisterhood and the chattering classes. I have occasionally written about remarks made by public figures who, in the past, made off colour remarks that would, if repeated today, call for smelling salts to be passed under twitching nostrils. THE NEW DARK AGES Have we reached a stage of sanctimonious self-censorship that finds its equals only in the dark corners of the Inquisition, Dark Ages, the witch hunts of 18th Century England and Germany. Are we returning to self-righteous bridling at religious opinion expressed that is out of kilter with orthodoxy? If so, we enter a new Dark Age. What is it about our society that has created
a climate of fear in the event of one innocently offending the feminist lobby? As one wit put it: “Men are of earth, so are women. Get over it.” Only by way of a little female teasing have I ever been described as a misogynist. I can be sure that if the public humiliation of men; our fathers, brothers and sons, was turned and aimed at women there would be lynching parties abroad. Excuse the pun. MEN ARE NOW VICTIMS OF WITCH HUNTS Men are now suspects if they take part in any activity that involves children. A young father recently joined in the fun at a theme park’s children play area. As he and his child played he photographed his small daughter. She was having a whale of a time on a slide. His mistake was to take photographs of the happy family experience. The hue
and cry went up: “He’s a paedophile.” The cry was taken up by hysterical mothers. Soon afterwards the poor man had to be escorted from the area by security staff. As if this bitch-hunt isn’t enough we all know that if a man is charged with a heinous sexual crime he is exposed to public scrutiny long before his trial takes place whilst the alleged victim keeps her anonymity. Some have taken their own lives. Many moved home or kept away from their families. The only exception to this rule is if the victim is a child. The message this sends is, if you’re a sexual deviant, you’re safer targeting children than adult women. I have a confession to make. Yes, it is time to get the smelling salts out again. I would think twice before I picked up a single woman hiker. If a chanced upon a distressed child I would be cautious about approaching and prudent in offering comfort. I will take a chance and take a lift with a woman I don’t know but probably will not enter a sealed train compartment if a woman travelling alone is already in there. M Y S T E R I O U S ATTACKS ON FEMALE PASSENGERS As you pick yourself up from the floor I am reminded of a mysterious crime wave that once occurred in New York. At the time there seemed to be a high level of reports and arrests following a spate of sexual assaults carried out on women pas-
sengers travelling alone on trains. Only after scores of men had been gaoled for sexually assaulting women in such circumstances was the cause of many ‘assaults’ established. Women, or rather a sub-section of this protected species, were preying on male commuters. Their modus operandi was to threaten the male passenger of assaulting them unless he emptied his wallet. Most men wisely coughed up. Some were outraged and denied doing so or they called their blackmailers bluff. Many paid a high price when later found guilty as charged. They found themselves not on a commuter trip to the office but in a Black Maria on their way to the local nick. The judiciary finally awoke on one occasion when a male victim was brought before them. Charged with assaulting a woman travelling alone on a train he called his witness. The train guard took the stand and the oath. The accused passenger then began to question the guard as to what had happened after he had heard the woman’s screams. “The accused drew my attention to his cigar,” the guard said. “He asked me to note the length of the column of ash at its end.” The guard then indicated a near inch of cigar ash in length. The accused suggested to me that he couldn’t attack the woman as she had described without placing the cigar down. Had he done so then the rocking motion of
the train would have dislodged the ash from the cigar. Her story didn’t stack up, the defendant was freed and the female predator charged accordingly. The story made headlines. From that day on there were far fewer allegations of male assaults on the city’s trains. Men could finally safely go about their daily routines free from the fear of female predators. THE WOMEN FROM HELL The female often appears to be the deadlier of the species. Natalie Mortimer, a 25-year old nurse was recently struck off after being sentenced to 22 months in prison for falsely claiming her own grandfather had sexually molested her when she was of primary school age. She had done so in an attempt to get her hands on inheritance money he had put aside for her. She wasted 175 hours of police time. On being sentenced she showed no remorse and smiled at friends as she was led from the dock. At the same time Maria Rodriguez, 29 years old, from Mexico, confessed to brutally murdering 8 months pregnant Nadia Avile. She had done so to brutally abort and seize the victim’s unborn baby. Both mother and child died. In Whitstable, Kent, 51-year old Bettina Bunte was sacked from Joy Lane Children’s Centre in Whitstable, Kent. Well known in the neighborhood, the carer was promoting her mummy porn novel based on an affair she had as a young teenager with a much older man. Her story clearly identified her as the author of a Fifty Shades of Grey genre novel about a child’s love affair with a much older teacher. Sacked from her local authority job at a Childcare’s Centre, she had the gall to say that her novel was not pornography. It just contained sexually explicit descriptions. Yes, I had to read this remark twice too.

In August a coalition of armed groups known as Libya Dawn stormed Libya’s capital, Tripoli and proclaimed a new government. Now rival groups aligned with the recognised government are counter attacking. The city’s so dangerous most foreigners have left, but reporter Seyi Rhodes and director Laura Warner shelter in the main fire station, and by filming the firemen gain a vivid snapshot of life in a disintegrating country. The fire brigade is one of the few institutions that still operates in the country, and Rhodes and Warner join the night shift at Tripoli’s main station. Most wealthy Libyans left long ago and now even the migrant workers are leaving.

In the final programme in the series, Guy takes on the challenge of building the fastest soapbox racer the world has ever seen, in an attempt to set a new speed record using just the pull of gravity and a tarmac road. To get to grips with blisteringly fast speeds on a public road, Guy tries his hand at street luge with ex-world champion Helene Schmit, before meeting up with his team of engineers to explore the science of rolling resistance and the importance of tyre pressure. Armed with what they believe to be the perfect formula, Guy’s team produce a completely unique soapbox cart and, after training with the Team GB women’s bobsled pair, are hoping for the perfect push start. Confidence is high and the adrenaline is flowing. The record attempt gets off to a flying start but are disaster and mayhem just around the corner?

Bit-part holiday homes can fulfil those dreams YOU gaze out of your office window and it’s pouring with rain. Don’t you just wish you were back on the beach in sunny climes. Or, better still, owning a holiday home abroad?
Thousands upon thousands of people dream of owning a place in the sun, but they know the cost is prohibitive. Yet there is another way to achieve your wish: fractional ownership. As it suggests, this scheme involves buying a proportion of the property with others, rather than the whole building yourself. You can buy, say, a quarter or one10th of the property, along with other fractional-share investors. This gives you the right to use the property in relation to your share, typically for four or five
weeks a year, and you could be free to rent out any unused allocation for income. It also enables you to share in any gains if the property rises in value. Fractional ownership has been billed as a cheap, hasslefree way to buy a holiday home, because you can buy shares from as little as £50,000. If you’re willing to spend more, it can also allow you to buy into a luxury property you couldn’t otherwise afford. Fractional ownership shouldn’t be confused with timeshare, says Christian Forbes, at Fundamentum Property. “Both give you the right to use the property a number of weeks a year. The difference is that with fractional ownership, you actually buy a share of the bricks and mortar.” Typically, you buy a share in a single Continued on page 28.

Bit-part holiday homes can fulfil those dreams Continued from page 27. property, say, a villa in Spain or farmhouse in Tuscany, and divide the costs, maintenance and time at the property with others. “You can make a financial return on your investment, too, either by renting the property in the weeks you aren’t using it, or if your share of its value rises,” adds Forbes. For example, Appassionata, a company specialising in fractional-ownership, is offering a one-tenth share of a property in the medieval Italian town of Petritoli for £65,000. The property, built into the entrance turrets and walls of the old town, boasts three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a sea-view terrace, beamed ceilings and stone floors. All 10 owners share the running costs of the property plus a 20% management fee. For that outlay, each gets five weeks’ usage a year. If you can’t use one of your weeks, it is offered to other owners, who pay your share of the maintenance charge that week. There are larger, fractional- ownership schemes for more serious investors, which spread money across apartments and hotels worldwide and allow you to spend a number of nights a year in them. “Fractional-property ownership can make more sense than buying a holiday home outright,” says Louise Reynolds, director of overseas buying agency Property Venture. “Many holiday homeowners don’t make as much use of their property as they might have wanted. With fractional ownership, property doesn’t stand empty for months and costs are proportionate to usage. “So, you could get a month’s usage for a month’s costs, as opposed to 52 weeks.” However, fractional ownership isn’t always
cheaper than buying your own property. “You could purchase 100% of an apartment, in say, Turkey for example, for the same price,”says Reynolds. And Carl Jennings, from estate agents Fine & Country Marbella, says: “You have a better chance of making a capital gain from rising property values if you buy your own property in a popular tourist area” “But fractional ownership can give you access to a luxury property, while ridding you of the hassle and the costs of maintenance,” says Dawn CavanaghHobbs, founder of Appassionata. “You share costs with your co-owners, and the property, pool and gardens are immaculately maintained all year. On your arrival, you can relax. The beds are made and the fridge is stocked.” Some schemes also offer the chance to exchange residency weeks with similar luxury properties around the world. Cavanagh-Hobbs says the buying process is relatively straightforward. “It is just
like buying a share in a company, and it avoids the complexities and costs of purchasing a property outright.” “The one major drawback is that a mortgage to fund your share is out of the question,” says Miranda John, at mortgage broker SPF Private Clients. “That’s because lenders are unable to repossess the property in case of default. On a more optimistic note, Ms John adds: “If you don’t have cash to spare, you may be able to raise funds against your existing home. “But under strict new mortgage regulations, your lender will want to ensure you can afford any extra borrowings now - and when rates rise!” As for the legalities, a reputable fractionalownership scheme will have a formal contract, to be agreed by all the owners. It sets out ownership length, how the shares are divided, how often you can use it and how shares should be sold. And you must ensure your name is on the title deeds. “Always view the property, check the management company, speak
to the other fractional owners, scrutinise all terms and conditions and always get an independent valuation,” says James Newman, property law expert at legal service MyBarrister.co.uk. “Also, check what’s included in the price, such as insurance, maintenance and management and taxes, or whether these carry an additional fee.” Fractional owners are typically tenants-incommon, which leaves investors free to sell their portion at any time, if they want to access their money. Newman adds: “Make sure the stake you are acquiring is ‘clean’, so you won’t be responsible for outstanding debts from the previous owner.” Use of the property is typically set out on a strict annual rotation, based on the size of your share, and Newman warns: “Make sure this rotates fairly, so you’re not repeatedly lumbered with the winter months.” As with any other property investment, profits may be subject to tax, says Alan Lester, head of property
at chartered accountants HW Fisher & company. “If you sell your share for more than you paid for it, then you may well be liable for any capital gains tax on any profit above the current allowance of £11,000 per annum.” If your agreement also allows you to rent out your property, the rental income may be subject to income tax, too. “The good news is that you can offset some of your costs against your tax bill, such as management fees and maintenance charges,” adds Lester. You may also face a council tax bill in the country the property sits, which should be shared proportionately among the owners. If buying off-plan, check the developer’s track record and financial position carefully. “Many Britons remain sceptical about fractional- ownership schemes overseas,” says Steve Goldstraw, property expert at Crosslane Group. “Unsuspecting British buyers abroad have been caught out by timeshare scams, local authority land-grabs in

In this programme Tom and Peter immediately get to work with the masons – digging stone out of the quarry, shaping it with the stone-cutters and finally lifting it into place on the towers - using a wooden treadmill. Meanwhile, Ruth sets to equipping their base, a simple wattle and daub hovel. She experiments by laying a rush floor and commissions clay cooking pots and an oak grain arc – carved using only an axe and assembled without nails - to store their wheat and barley. It becomes clear that all the stone, wood, mortar, dyes, food and water required for the castle needed to be sourced from the surrounding landscape; transporting heavy goods in the 13th century was expensive. One of the most important resources on a 13th century building site was water, so Peter visits a wood turner to make a pulley and Tom makes a rope to hoist the bucket from the well. As they enjoy a simple meal of barley and vegetable pottage in the hovel they reflect that there are no easy jobs in the medieval age.

For imagine… Alan Yentob joins Kiefer at his studios in France and Germany as he prepares for a retrospective at the Royal Academy. In a series of frank interviews set against the backdrop of his awe-inspiring studios, Kiefer discusses the impact of his most significant pieces, shows a selection of new work, and explains why he is as excited and driven by his practice now, at the age of 69, as he was aged 24.

BBC2, 21:00 Warsaw to Krakow. With his 1913 Bradshaw’s in hand, Michael Portillo journeys deep into central Europe to explore a country where east meets west: Poland. Beginning in Warsaw, Michael is puzzled by how a city famously razed to the ground after the Second World War can appear so beautifully preserved. He hitches a ride in a 1913 carriage to discover one of the secrets of its restoration. Heading south west from Warsaw, Michael’s fellow passengers come to his rescue with a crash course in Polish pronunciation. In Poznan, at the heart of former German Poland, Michael takes in the view from the Kaiser’s balcony before climbing aboard what is possibly the last steam-powered commuter train. Arriving in Wroclaw, Michael heads for a giant train factory, where they continue to manufacture car bodies for locomotives today. And from Wroclaw it’s on to the ancient capital of Poland, Krakow, where Michael lunches in a milk bar and takes a tour in an iconic vehicle of the communist era.

The Midas Touch! By Andy Briggs CAN anyone really turn anything into gold with just the touch of a hand? Perhaps not physically. But, metaphorically, there are a select few around the world who have this ability!
Music can create tears, joy, pain, sensuality, romance and, dare I say, even fear. In fact, there are few emotions it cannot portray. To create music vocally is a gift, a quality not all possess, and it should be treasured. But to create music instrumentally is a real skill. It takes time, effort, discipline and, above all, dedication. Each of us, I’m sure, has his/her preferred instrument to listen to - saxophone, piano, violin, etc. The instrument that really gets my blood pumping is the guitar! In its many forms, (electric, acoustic, classical, etc.), it contributes to almost every genre of music, often producing unforgettable melodies and tunes that strike chords in our hearts and memories forever. On every corner in every town, you are never far from the sound of a guitar. Be it plugged in and blasting out some Metallica, or on the seafront in the arms of an ageing Canarian at the local domino night, it is always a welcome sound. This year, I have had the pleasure of working with a highly-skilled guitarist called Anthony Varwin. And although I have always been able to appreciate quality guitarists, it was not until I rehearsed with Anthony that I understood the depth of concentration it takes to play at such a high level. From Costa del Silencio to La Laguna and back down to Las Americas, Tenerife can offer some great names on the guitar scene, such as Ollie ‘Showbiz’ Cusack, Phil Francis,
Steve Gee and the many more like them. All are extremely talented, with must-see shows. However, there is a young man on whom I´d like to focus, perhaps not for his high skill level or vast technical ability, but for his innovative, inventive and exciting approach to music on the Island. Miguel Folgueras Ramon is doing something not many are willing to gamble with here; he is taking genres of music that don’t belong on guitar and turning them into sexy, acoustic masterpieces. Youtube is awash with people doing the same and, with the success of BBC - Live Lounge in the UK, it seems to me that the public want
to see and hear more of this music! But Tenerife, at times, can get stuck in a bit of a rut, afraid of change (in my opinion) and it takes a brave soul like Miguel to mix things up. From Britney Spears’ classics to LMFAO´s Sexy And I Know It, he really is pushing the boundaries of what people are used to hearing on guitar in Tenerife - and I love it! Miguel doesn’t stop with song choice, though, to create an unusual show. He uses a piece of technology called a loop pedal. It’s a fairly standard piece of kit for a musician and not particularly new. But again, because Tenerife is so idyllic and everyone is so content with the way things are, it can fall behind the times. And a loop pedal is something you don´t see very often on stage here, yet it’s a simple concept. If there is just one person on stage, then to produce the sound of a band you will, of course, need a band. A loop pedal opens new possibilities for the solo performer. You can record various sounds with your guitar and voice in front of the audience, and then introduce them gradually, or all at once, whenever you feel is appropriate. It maintains the feeling of completely live music, while allowing the individual to turn his or her guitar into several guitars, and his or her voice into a three-part (or more) harmony. Even without his guitar, when fronting the bands like Masquerade (whose lead guitarist Freddy Matos might, in some circles, be called one of the most talented men on the Island) and The Magic Five band (another incredible group), Miguel bends notes and deviates discreetly from the original compositions of songs … breathing new life into classic sounds! I have respect for all those who sing because it takes courage and, of course, time and effort to perfect. And learning to play an instrument is not something
that comes naturally. To learn to bend and shape the hands and fingers in ways that defy human ability draws huge admiration from me. With this in mind, I bring to your attention a man whose distinctive voice and sumptuous guitar playing have left many spellbound; not just on Tenerife shores but as far away as America and beyond. Aaron Cormack has had various record deals throughout the years, most notably with Sony. He and his brother, Leon, have produced music in many genres, from House to Acoustic Rock, and have had numerous hits. They won a TEA in 2012 for Outstanding Contribution To Music here. And, working with Leon, Marcus Day and various other DJs and producers, Aaron has amassed well over a million hits on Youtube - and all these accolades are truly deserved! Aaron has many a show in his arsenal, and is a multi-talented man. However, with guitar in hand is when I most enjoy his music. What Aaron can do with a guitar allows him to crank up the volume and blast out spine-tingling solos. However, his distinct sound I mentioned does not come from doing this. While some like it loud and in your face, Aaron´s sound is understated. It is a mellow blanket of sound that wraps itself around you and leaves you transfixed in its grasp. Like Miguel, of whom I spoke earlier, Aaron puts his own twist on songs. The guitar lines he plays (not always but often) differ from that of the original pieces of music, creating a unique sound and injecting a vibrant, youthful one to older songs. It reminds today’s teenagers what real song-writing sounds like. It is because of Aaron, Miguel and the abundance of quality guitarists I hear every night of the week, that I believe some people really do have The Midas Touch!

the Bitter side of fruit juices! FRUIT juice contains heaps of sugar and should not be considered as one of the five daily essentials for healthy eating.
That’s the message from Action on Sugar
campaigners, who say it should be removed from the recommended list of healthy things to eat because it confused parents. The Action group found that many children’s juices contained at least six teaspoons of sugar - even more than cola - and they come in cartons larger than rec-
ommended. Official advice is that a 150ml glass of unsweetened fruit juice counts towards your “five-a-day”, while other juice drinks, such as squash and sweetened juice, do not. A smoothie containing all the edible pulped fruit or vegetable may count as more than one five-a-day portion, de-
pending on the quantity of fruits or vegetables or juice used, as well as how the smoothie has been made. Action on Sugar campaigners say the guidelines are baffling, but Public Health England feels the advice is sound. It believes that consuming five or more portions a day helps reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers. Nutritionist Kawther Hashem said: “Parents do not always understand the difference between a juice drink and a fruit juice, and most cartons are 200ml or more. “Many parents are still buying fruit juices and juice drinks for their children, thinking they are choosing healthy products. But children should be given juice as an occasional treat only.” This advice is echoed by Susan Jebb, UK Government adviser and Oxford professor. She is concerned about parents using fruit juice as “routine rehydration” for their children, and says: “Water is the best way to get the fluid we need in the diet.” Sugars are released from fruit when it is juiced or blended, and these sugars can cause damage to teeth and contribute to weight gain. Added sugars should not make up more than 10% of the energy (calorie intake) you get from food and drink daily about 12 teaspoons - according to Government
guidelines. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently issued guidelines suggesting that cutting the sugar we eat from the current recommended limit of 10% of daily energy intake by half would be beneficial. But the British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA) said fruit juice consumption in the UK equated to an average of just 45ml per person per day - accounting for 1% of the calories in the average British diet. “Given that Government figures show the vast majority of adults and children are not getting their recommended five fruit and veg a day, it
is unfortunate that this survey omits to mention the established health benefits of fruit juice, such as vitamin C,” said BSDA director-general Gavin Partington. Public Health England’s Dr Alison Tedstone said: “Fruit juice is a useful contribution towards our five-a-day. But because the process of juicing releases sugars from the fruit, we recommend that you limit your fruit juice to 150ml a day. “That includes juice from smoothies, and consume these and other sugary drinks only with meals to reduce the risk of tooth decay.”

Chilling out with these hot chillies!
DID you know that chillies are grown right here in Tenerife? And for the last two years, Tenerife Chilli Farm has been producing different types of the pepper.
It’s a unique project right here in the South and is based in Guia de Isora. The farm was started by Tenerife residents Darren Cox and Samuel Gartley as a hobby to satisfy their passion for spice and heat. Since then, the project has grown and developed into something far more serious. As well as local customers, they export all over Europe and recently, they began selling Tenerife produce in America and Australia. Tenerife Chilli Farm specialises in the hottest strains of pepper in the world, for which demand is constantly growing.
A pepper’s heat is measured on what is known as the schoville scale. To give you some idea of the heat level, a jalapeño is roughly 6000 on the scale. However, at the Chilli Farm they grow peppers that exceed 1.5 million! Recently they have even started
cropping the Carolina Reaper, which is officially the hottest pepper in the world. But as the boys are keen to point out, it’s about flavour as well! These hot peppers are full of fruity flavour, and, of course, you need only use a little. Other varieties grown
are Habañeros, Ghost, Chocolate 7pot, Jonahs and Trinidad Scorpions, all of which are grown from seed. Tenerife Chilli Farm also hosts “Chilli Challenge” nights, one of which is taking place tomorrow (Saturday) at Ye Old Ocean, Playa Fanabe, from 8.30pm. It’s something different and great fun for everyone as they seek to find the ultimate chillihead! This weekend is even more special as they will be joined by Clifton Chilli Club, which is famed across the world. Tenerife’s wonderful hot climate and rich volcanic soil have been vital to the Chilli Farm’s success story because the peppers can grow all year round. Meditation is brain-booster
M E D I TAT I N G really can be a work-out for the mind, according to scientists, who say it can expand the brain.
Practising simple meditation techniques, such as concentrating on breathing, helps build denser grey matter in parts of the brain associated with learning and memory, controlling emotions and compassion. Just eight weeks of
meditation can produce structural changes large enough to be picked up by MRI scanners, say American scientists. Harvard neuroscientist Dr Sara Lazar said:
“If you use a particular part of your brain, it’s going to grow because you are using it. “It really is mental exercise. Basically, the idea is ‘use it or lose it’.
It’s like building a muscle.” In a study run by Dr Lazar and her colleagues, 16 volunteers had their brains scanned before and after an eight-week “mindfulness” course. Mindfulness is an increasingly popular form of meditation, where the aim is to focus thoughts on the body’s physical sensations and detach yourself from the “chatter of the mind”. The volunteers had weekly group sessions in which they did breathing exercises, gentle yoga and a “body scan”, focusing their thoughts
on one part of the body at a time. They were also asked to practise for about half-an-hour each day. MRI scans were taken before and after the sessions, then compared with volunteers who had not taken part in the meditation course. After eight weeks, those who went on the course had thicker grey matter in several parts of the brain. These included the left hippocampus, a small horseshoe-shaped structure in the central brain involved in mem-

So if you are living in your Tenerife home permanently, it will be furnished differently from a part-time, holiday dwelling. Equally, if you rent your property out, it is important to consider all the relevant factors to ensure it is suitable for rental. For example, if the property is for your
own use only, you can indulge yourself with pale sofas, plump cushions and fragile ornaments. You know your own standards, and you know you will take care of your possessions. You will also need more storage than is necessary for holiday-makers, and you might consider a nice sideboard or a cabinet for your treasures. You should take into account that others may not have the same standards as you, or may not take much care with sun cream or spillages while on holiday. Intricate blinds or curtains are not appropriate for a rental situation. You should also consider safety, taking into account such items as trailing cords or glass tables (which should
always be made of tempered glass). If you live here for some of the year, and rent out the rest of the time, you will need to
find a balance between the two types of furnishings. A good solution is to have a lockable cupboard, in which you can store your personal bits
and pieces to make your own stay more comfortable, while leaving it a little more bare, but more practical for the rest of the time. As far

For a relatively small expenditure, you can refresh a tired property to look more appealing, and, in the long run, reduce your downtime, plus cleaning and maintenance bills. So make sure your property is looking its best, is practical and comfortable, and fit for purpose, whatever your situation.

The imperfect side of selling By Ruth Benson LINGERIE group Victoria’s Secret has this week been criticised for its recent campaign, aptly called The perfect body.
The poster sees three slender women wearing the underwear with the caption, “the perfect body”. A petition was started in the US by change. org which called for the company to “apologise for and amend the irresponsible marketing”. The backlash from the advert as to what is the perfect body is the main issue. Concerns of the effects on young women, which I have previously highlighted, is what has caused the most concern. But this generalisation of the perfect body can be upsetting to women of all ages. How a campaign can say “the perfect body” when all three models are similar size and height is beyond me. I have mentioned previously about body im-
age and its portrayal by the media and celebrities, and this campaign is by no means helping. Along the same lines this week, Cosmopolitan published an article regarding plus-sizes. Unfortunately we now live with things being put into departments. For example, if you are small there is the petite section, the tall section and now plus-sizes. But what exactly does that mean? What is the right size? Surely it’s not that simple because we all have different builds, heights and sizes. The article looks at how there is more choice now for what the writer describes as “fat” girls. Yet the Internet, as well as the high street, has realised that not everyone is 6ft and a size 10. The main problem found was that when you look online, the models wearing the clothes are more likely to be a size 12 and, therefore, not showing how they would look in a bigger size. Okay, they cannot show each item in each size, but could they not show it in one small and one large? The average size for women in the UK is a 16. Would it not,
therefore, be better for the models to represent the average size? Regular readers may recall that I have touched on this before with Debenhams and its mannequins. But it seems to be a recurring issue. The issue with Victoria’s Secret is exactly what I am talking about - images shown are still that of slender women, but they are not the main consumers. If you show clothes for the right-size people, not only will it increase sales, as people have a visual idea, but it will also change society’s image of the perfect body. Gemma Collins, from ITV’s The Only Way is Essex, launched her own plus-size collection of Christmas outfits his week. The reality star won plus-size designer of the year and takes a lot of detail into designing her collection, making sure the dresses flatter bigger figures, using tricks such as sheer sleeves and a variety of hemlines to flatter the larger figure. Body perception, body image - whatever you want to call it - will always cause controversy and the main reason shops have segmented us into different departments is commerciallybased. I fit the petite category, and it makes my shopping a lot easier, as I am sure plus-sizes and “tall” sections do for others.

EVERY now and then, there comes a time when we all have to face facts in the salon. It’s not what you want and it’s not what I want to do - but it’s what’s needed for your hair!
I’m talking about things that need to be said by your stylists, about which you may not agree. For example if you’re only wanting the ends off your hair yet they suggest more, there’s a good reason. In 33 years of styling hair, I have never worked with anyone who cuts off hair just for the sake of it. Quite the reverse, actually … hair left on when, really, it should be on the salon floor. Most stylists I know are in the profession because they love it - and not because it pays well. This is why we always try to give honest advice. It’s our love of the job that makes us want to send out a happy, stylish client from our salons. So if your stylists tell you that a service shouldn’t be done, or that you need a few more inches off to see your hair in better condition, then take their advice seriously. We hate to see you upset about your hair, but preventing it from it getting that way is what
we strive for. Advising you what products to use and how to care for your hair is our job. Don’t expect the hair you have been given to be transformed into that glamour model in the photo - we all have our limits! Then again, I’ve never met a client with hair which is impossible to improve.
You all have expectations of what you want from your stylists, but listen to what can be done rather than what’s not physically possible. Never give up on your hair because there’s always something that can be done, whether it be the cut, colour or both. Sit down with your stylists and come to an agreement about what you want and what they are saying is practical. We don’t want to promise you something that won’t suit you, or will cause damage to your hair because, when you walk out of a salon, your hair has our name on it. We want you to be a walking advert for our work and not an embarrassment. Work with us and your hair will be your talking point. Work against us and it will be a talking point … for all the wrong reasons!

When it was the 1959 General Election, she voted for Hugo Holmes, Conservative candidate for Brightside, Sheffield, because, she said: “Hugo was so handsome and spoke so nicely!” He didn’t actually get anywhere because, all through the Fifties, Richard Winterbottom, the Labour candidate, became the people’s choice with every election. But she was exercising her democratic right to vote, and, if that was her criteria, then so be it! I sometimes think that you might as well vote for people on the strength of their looks, as politics seems to be something that can attract people who are completely off their rockers! The British people have always loved their eccentrics and nutcas-

Are MPs off their rockers?
es, and no one fitted that description more than the musician, David ‘Screaming Lord’ Sutch (Third Lord of Harrow). Rightly or wrongly, my husband never votes in any election, having no faith in anyone from any political party. However, he has been quoted as saying that had Lord Sutch been standing in Sheffield, he would have changed his mind - because he was the only person who had ever brought a sense of fun to the political scene. I remember. a few years ago, going to see Lord Sutch and The Savages at The Boardwalk, the premier Sheffield music venue which, sadly, closed its doors a year or so ago. They were very late arriving as they had lost their way. The band walked through the concert venue carrying a coffin and, once on the stage, it opened to reveal Sutch. That set the tone for an evening of utter madness. Despite a self-confessed lack of any vocal talent whatsoever, Sutch carved out a prolific and varied career, which included a brief spell of managing Radio Sutch from a fort off the coast of Southend in the South of England. In the early Sixties he began standing in par-
liamentary elections, at first representing the National Teenage Party, and then, by the Eighties, The Monster Raving Loony Party: “Vote for Insanity!” In his career, he contested over 40 elections, always losing his deposit but always commanding a respectable number of votes. After he polled several hundred votes in Margaret Thatcher’s constituency in 1983, the deposit was raised from £150 to £500. Undeterred, he increased the number of his concerts to pay the extra cost. In 1994, he achieved his highest number of votes in Rotherham,
South Yorkshire, with 1,114 votes. David Sutch, whose idol was Winston Churchill, had many famous friends, including Mick Jagger, and he even visited the Playboy Mansion in America. However, although viewed as a harmless eccentric by many, he was also thought of as a complete nuisance by others. He suffered from severe depression and took his own life in 1999 following the death of his mother. Spin-offs from the Monster Raving Loony Party were the Monster Raving Loony Green Party and the Rock
and Roll Loony Party. Their policies included free beer for all, sex for pensioners and laughter clinics on the NHS! The official Monster Raving Loony Party still field candidates from time to time at elections, but seem to have lost the zaniness that Lord Sutch brought to the political scene. One of its supporters, astrologer Patrick Moore, at one time the party’s Finance Minister, said ‘The party have an advantage over other political parties as, at least they know they are loonies!” One other party well known for being a bit off the wall in the UK is The Church of the Militant Elvis Party. This alternative branch of politics had seven registered campaign groups: Bus Pass Elvis Party, Elvis Defence League, Elvis Turns Green Party, Grumpy Old Elvis Party, Militant Elvis Anti-Tesco Popular Front, Elvis and the Yeti Himalayan Preservation Party and the Elvis Loves Pets Party. Campaign pledges for the 2010 General Election included “Filling in pot holes”, “Bringing back dog licences”, “Introducing moats round houses” and Bono for Pope!” Other policies included the plan to in-
vade Antarctica and shout at icebergs to stop them melting, put CCTV in the bedroom of Nick Clegg the Deputy Prime Minister, and turn public schools into £1 shops! Generally, the party did not do terribly well in elections. However, they did have their followers and, in a Nottingham by-election this year, the “Bus Pass Elvis Party” came in fourth, ahead of the Liberal Democrats! David Cameron famously branded UKIP as “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists, mostly” Indignantly, the Monster Raving Loony Party leader said it was his party “who had attained the Holy Grail of Loonyism”. So, a party, although seeming to fool many people, whose members have been accused of homophobia, sexism, racism and islamophobia, blaming the Holocaust on Jews, calling overseas countries “bongo bongo land”, that women should not wear trousers, feminism is evil, women are better in the bedroom than the boardroom, advocate scrapping the smoking ban, believe that physical exercise in school will prevent children from becoming gay, are not actually loonies? I wonder!

Sunny side to a rainy day NOVEMBER started well after the disappointment of having to cancel K9’s Open Day last month through to bad weather.
It was rescheduled for the first Sunday of November and raised a whopping 480 euros not bad for a couple of
hours in glorious sunshine. The icing on the cake, however, was that another dog found her forever home. Many of those present took the opportunity to check out the refuge refurbishments. The tiling of the old kennels is coming along nicely, and the new kennels are a sight to behold thanks to think.pet solutions. A social afternoon,
hosted by Stevie D and Christine, has been organised on 24th November in Alcala Plaza, to start at 2pm. There will be plenty going on for people to enjoy, so do pop along. Anything raised will, of course, boost K9’s coffers. With Christmas just around the corner, thanks must go to the sponsors who made it possible for us to pro-

At just over 11 grand, the third-generation Smart Fortwo price seems pretty heavy, especially when you consider you could invest in one of the more practical city cars and superminis for around the same money.. But perhaps I’m being unkind because it has its followers - manufacturers Daimler Benz are more than happy with 1.5-plus million sales since the original launch in 2003, when the peculiar little machines were sold in department stores!

Costly, but Smart with it! There has never been much to fault about the concept behind the Fortwo microcar, which offers urban mobility for two people in a usefully-compact and stylish package. But the early models were not without flaws. This new offering doesn’t deviate too dramatically from the last one in terms of mechanical set-up. It retains the rear-engined, rear-drive lay-out of its predecessor, as well as the twodoor, two-seat lay-out. But the car-makers have focused heavily on correcting all the perceived wrongs, most notably an unsettled ride and clunky transmission. So the Fortwo comes into focus with a reinvigorated four-door, fourseat Forfour, and both share their underpinnings with the new Renault Twingo. The two Smart models share a common 1660mm width and 1550mm height, but the Fortwo is shorter than its four-seat big brother. In fact, its 2,695mm length is the same as that
of the previous models, although the wheelbase has been pushed out by 8mm to 1,873mm. The Fortwo and Forfour also have a new family look, particularly with regards to the front-end styling and the exposed elements of the Tridion safety cell. Two powerplants are available now: a 999cc, three-cylinder, naturallyaspirated petrol engine that produces 70bhp and 67lb ft, and a more powerful turbo-charged 898cc, three-cylinder
unit with 89bhp and 100lb ft on tap. The five-speed, automated manual has been replaced by a choice of a regular five-speed manual or, later next year, a six-speed, twin-clutch automatic. Fortwo has a more purposeful appearance than the previous edition. This one is 11cm wider than its predecessor and it shows inside, where there’s sufficient width for two broad adults to sit comfortably without having to rub shoulders.
Headroom is pretty decent as well. Just as the Mk2 version improved on the dynamic qualities of the original Smart, this update makes further progress. New suspension has succeeded in smoothing out most of the jiggle and excessive harshness of the Fortwo’s ride. The turning circle is just 6.95m, eclipsing all other cars, as well as ultra-manoeuvrable vehicles such as the London black cab. True, it can still be skittish over large bumps, humps and camber changes, But overall, there’s a better feel to the way the new Fortwo tackles traffic-clogged urban roads . The 999cc naturally-aspirated unit feels better suited to the Fortwo than the more costly 898cc turbocharged variant. Okay, it won’t be challenging boy-racers at traffic lights - the 0-62mph sprint in 14.4sec ensures that - but the three-pot unit responds in a more progressive fashion than the boost-
ed engine version. It’s no surprise that it runs out of steam rapidly, but that’s of less importance in lower-speed city driving. It becomes an issue only when you take to A-roads and motorways, where the turbo-charged engine feels slightly more capable. Ultimately, though, neither car is anything close to offering swift motoring. In addition to the five-speed manual, a pre-production car fitted with the newly-engineered automatic transmission will be available from next Spring as a £995 option. However, the automatic transmission’s installation doesn’t feel nearly as refined as the smooth manual. Although the combinations of bold colours and novel materials inside won’t be to everyone’s taste, at least they set the Fortwo apart. The new Fortwo retains the sparks of fresh design and clever packaging which made the original, quirky version such a head-turning proposition.
This one floats my boat! MEET the Panther, an amphibious vehicle which can hit speeds of 80mph-plus on land and up to 45mph in water.
It is the brainchild of Californian manufacturer WaterCar and can make the switch from car to boat in just 15 seconds. Founder Dave March launched the company 15 years ago, aiming to topple the world record for the fastest amphibious vehicle. And in 2010 he did just that when WaterCar’s Python model reached a top speed of 60mph (52 knots) on water. The Python was never sold to the public because of its high production costs, but this new model, The Panther, went on sale in July 2013. The company now has an 18-month backlog of orders, with US billionaires virtually fighting one another to have one parked in their garages
(or on their ponds, no doubt). The Panther costs $155,000 (123,000 euros) and features a lightweight, chromoly-steel (high carbon) chassis and fibre-glass hull, as well as a hydraulic offroad suspension which retracts the wheels in under eight seconds. And the car comes
equipped with a 3.7 litre V6 engine, which means that when it comes to speed, it’s more than a match for the more traditional sea-faring companions. Its unique, amphibious nature has made it a must-have status symbol, and WaterCar have received an influx of orders from the su-
per-rich, including Silicon Valley billionaires and the crown prince of Dubai - who is reported to own several. WaterCar spokesman Michael March, 30, said: “We have sold cars to some of the wealthiest and powerful people imaginable. “We never know who is sending in a deposit until
we begin building the car for that somebody, and realise who he/she is. “Most requests have been colour schemes that match personal helicopters, mega yachts, luxury cars, county colours, and even just plain and subtle so that nobody would even know the car is amphibious.” The Panther is fully
customisable - meaning the buyer has control over everything, from hull colour to paint, interior, dashboard, gauges, steering wheel and seats. Michael added: “The best part about the Panther is that it drives better than most boats on water, and can travel more places on land than most cars. “The design process has not been easy. There are no books and there has been little to no research on amphibious technology. “There have been thousands of attempts to build amphibious vehicles but we have, literally, had to start from nothing. “I’d say our biggest problem was getting a car meant for land to plane on water like a boat. “It has taken much longer than anticipated, but it feels amazing. We set out to design and build an amazing vehicle -and we have done just that. “There is no other vehicle in the world like it!”

TENERIFE have now gone three games undefeated, and seven points from three matches is perfectly acceptable.
And most fans would have taken that when the players trudged off at half-time last weekend. They trailed Alaves by an Ion goal and looked short of ideas. It was a return to the early matches this season, and a world away from the confident side who recently dispatched Barca B and Real Zaragoza. It’s not as though Alaves were playing particularly well. They were gifted the lead on 26 minutes. Ion’s shot from 25 yards was a hopeful effort which Roberto simply failed to deal with. Maybe the young keeper thought the ball was going wide. Maybe he didn’t see it until it was too late. Either way, his late dive was pathetic, and Ion looked a little embarrassed as he celebrated. Tenerife were all over
the place. Ifran was isolated in attack and Suso was having a rare off-day. There was no snap, no buzz, no pizzazz. Carlos Ruis did hit a post - and the fans thought it might have been one of those days. times he needs to be hit around the face with a wet fish. Boy, he was useless on Sunday. His ability to mark a defender when a cross comes in is mindblowing. He should be tried in the back four. His job is to get free, create space, make runs to pull defenders out of shape, steal a yard, hold the ball up, find a teammate or force an effort on goal. He did none of these things. My old coach would have called him a Daily Mirror. Because that’s how high he jumps when a cross comes in! He would be a pleasure to mark as an old centre-back. Either way, Tenerife were much better after the cup of tea. Raul Camara again gave his all, bombing forward from left-back. His movement gave Tenerife space in the middle. And with Suso back on the bunny and causing problems, it was only a matter of time before the equaliser came. But Tenerife needed a hand for that. Only Unai Medina knows what he was thinking when he got himself sent off. He will argue, and have a point, that both yellows were soft. But since they were three minutes apart, you have to look at the
player. Manager Alberto Lopez was going nuts. Medina’s dismissal on the hour sounded the cavalry charge. Quique came on for Ricardo in midfield and he had a stormer. The lad has an eye for a pass and in the quarter-back role he tore Alaves apart. But for me, Manu is one of the best keepers in the league. He did well for Recreativo and Alcorcon a few years ago. He has started the season well and he kept out Tenerife time after time. He comes for a cross, is brave in the challenge and I would love him to be here! But there was nothing he could do to stop Ifran’s smart finish 13 minutes from time. Late on, he forced Ifran wide and was delighted to see the Uruguayan’s shot thump off the post. Tenerife threw everything forward, but the goal never came. It was a point gained but felt like two dropped. Chipeque seem to have lost their way recently, in more ways than one! They are now playing at their fourth venue for the season, which may explain their 5-3 loss against Clouseaus. Elsewhere, Emerald Lounge halted a run of defeats as they stuck seven into Picassos. Things are looking a lot clearer now at the top of Division 2. And it would appear to be a straight race between Waterfall and local ri-
vals The Palms. Waterfall are in pole position, but they were a bit slow off the grid because they could only draw at Barracuda Hunters. The Palms neatly capitalised on that by bashing The Rebels, 7-1.

Burnley make mark at last THE International break will give one or two managers the opportunity to play wildcards in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League before they lose too much ground. It also means that injury lists can be shortened and players rested, ready to come back fresh and raring to go. On the negative side, it means a pretty boring weekend ahead! The point-scoring team of the week reflects Burnley’s first win
and Newcastle’s current run of form, with both teams providing two players apiece. The rest of the team consisted of a player each from Everton, Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs, Sunderland, Man City and Southampton. Warren Wilson and his Cross Fire Hurricanes did enough to remain at the top, but Frank Devaney and his Toffees came charging into second spot, just seven points adrift after a great week, assisted by
Aguero and Chadli on the points front. They were not team of the week, though. That honour went to Andrew Titley and his Stocks 25 team with 88 points. He had Aguero and Chadli as well, and also in form were Baines and Sigurdsson. The managers are starting to bunch up and it will be tough for sides to sneak away from the pack. We are at the stage of the season where a lot of the teams are look-
ing very similar. It will be interesting to see how the use of the captain’s armband affects matters, and also how many managers will stray from the flock. Wayne Rooney is set to return to action, so will managers dump Aguero or Costa to make space? Also, strikers who looked cheap a few weeks ago, now look like dead weight. I’m thinking Leicester’s Ulloa as an example. And what of the hot strik-
ers? Will we see Ayoze being snapped up, or maybe Long at Southampton? Also, it’s about time
Aston Villa hit the net, and maybe they will provide a cheap points option when the action is back next weekend.

Potters win old-boys’ battle A BIG feature of the Direct Telecom Pool League is the spirit in which matches are played.
There is genuine competition, but always with a smile and a sense of fair play. And the banter is fierce! Deep friendships have been forged over the years, and teams honestly look forward to playing old foes. Some sides inspire their own nicknames and, with a degree of love, we can say that on Tuesday, we had the latest Werther’s Cup contest. Phoenix Potters have not had the best of runs, unlike Tenerife Hammers C, who had been in good form over recent weeks. The two sides contain some of our more senior players, and it was never going to be an early finish! Both sides had the zimmers ready and, by all accounts, it was another fun encounter. Hammers were missing Ken and Bobby Baker, while Potters were back in the winning groove. taking themselves up to third again. Treehouse A are, erm, pulling up trees at the moment, and this week saw them away at bottom team Atmosphere 13. Treehouse quickly established a 3-1 lead, but Atmosphere produced a fine comeback to level at 4-4, leaving the game nicely poised. Treehouse captain Mark was having an off night - he lost all three matches - but, fortunately, his team rallied well and got over the line for another win. Even so, it was encouraging pool from Atmosphere 13. This year’s surprise package, Terrace Bar B, have taken some good scalps so far and
are riding high. They also showed character on Tuesday against the Peacocks. After being 4-1 up they suddenly found themselves 5-4 down after a great Peacock’s fightback. The last three frames were hard-fought and in the end, both teams were happy with a point. Terrace skipper Finn said: “Those lads played well and are in a false position.” I’m not sure the table lies at this stage of the season, but it’s another example of why there are no easy matches in the top division. Exiles A and Palms Bar A are neck and neck in the league, so it seemed destined that their game was going to end in a draw - and eventually it did. There was nothing between the two sides all night. Mark missed a simple black for Exiles, while Penguin and Taliban Mark did the same for the visitors. Palms Bar B managed to go one better than their stablemates while hosting Exiles B. Both sides are in their first topflight season and have done well. Palms’ home form is decent and with the Exiles not the best of travellers, the 7-5 result was easy to tip. Dreamers A have been misfiring in recent weeks, and that is also true of their opponents, Waterfall Rebels. It was a cagey affair over the first few frames, the Rebels taking an early 3-2 lead. But Dreamers hit an extra gear and took the next five frames and the points. Gav was wagging his finger all night as he took all three of his frames. There was no change at the top of the table, Gaffers A remaining there after a routine win over Terrace Bar A.

Credit goes to the Los Cristianos team, who put up a good fight. Lady Luck seems to have deserted them, but I am sure a win is coming. Tenerife Pool Tables have hit a nice purple patch, picking up

they welcomed another win. James Place have taken their time to get going this time around. They had a tough start, facing all the leading sides. But they went to Hoppy’s bar this week and, despite dropping a few frames, were always in control. Captain James was back in form, leading from the front and taking all three of his games. This inspired the rest of the team, including Lee, who won three as well, leaving Hoppy’s bereft of ideas. Gaffers B are sitting
pretty in fifth spot, and they are playing some good pool. But they were made to work hard for their points against Next Door. There was nothing to separate the teams over the first eight games, with the scores poised at 4-4, including Next Door’s Kingsley producing a 7-ball clearance against Troy. But Gaffers dug deep in the final frame and, inspired by Nathan’s hat-trick of wins, they got the important frames and all the points.

Ñandu need you now! ÑANDU Rugby Union Club under-16s, based in Adeje, are a hardworking group of kids of different nationalities from different schools and areas.
They spend most of their spare time training to improve their skills, but they have a problem and need your help. Since they are the only under-16 team in Tenerife, they have nobody to play!
This hasn’t dampened the spirit and each week without fail, they train at Las Torres and T3, but never get a chance to play a full match. Their aim is to play in the Catalan Rugby League, who have accepted them to take part in full matches in an official competition. But because of the costs involved getting to Barcelona, and what would be a high outlay for sides to come to Tenerife, the plan is for them to travel to Barcelona four times and
play on a Saturday and Sunday. This would mean no home matches, but at least they would be playing and competing! Their weekend matches next year would take place on: 17-18th Jan; 14-15th Feb; 14-15th Mar and 11-12th April. The players, coaches and their fans are fund-
raising to try to make their dream a reality. They recently completed a 2,000km (the distance from Tenerife to Barcelona and back) stationary cycle ride in the Gimnasio de Adeje, and have also taken part in a charity climb to the summit of Mount Teide, which is a 17km ascent.
The Ñandu lads attended Sunday’s Remembrance Service at Westhaven Bay, where they were kindly welcomed by organisers and ex-serviceman alike. The boys were smartly presented, polite, and a credit to their club throughout the service. Afterwards, they spent

Hamilton in a spin, but he remains up for that final push LEWIS HAMILTON, with five consecutive F1 victories - and 10 in all this season may rue a spin on lap 28 of Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo.
It cost him seven seconds and left Mercedes team-mate and closest rival Nico Rosberg holding him at bay for the remainder of a racelong thriller between the runaway pair. Hamilton, who just loves a dust-up, fought back to narrow the margin to a whisker, but the German, at his defensive best, did just enough to hold him off in a tense finale. It reduced Hamilton’s championship advantage to 17 points, with 50 available in the final race in Abu Dhabi. And in any other Formula 1 season, sixth in
that showdown would have been enough for Hamilton to clinch his second world title, even if Rosberg won the race. But with double points available the situation is more precarious for the British driver. No wonder a relieved Rosberg was bubbling. “I’m very happy with the whole weekend,” he said, having bettered his title rival throughout qualifying the previous day. “I’ve been feeling comfortable in the car, and I controlled the gap to Lewis in the race.” Hamilton will clinch the F1 crown by finishing second to Rosberg in Abu Dhabi. Third or lower and Rosberg is champion - but only if he wins. An upbeat Hamilton, said: “Overall, I’m really happy. I came back, I clearly had a lot more pace than Nico, I closed down the seven seconds and I’m looking forward
to the next race. And yes, I will be going allout for victory.” But he admitted: “There is zero comfort going into the race. There are 50 points to gain … it’s the last race ... you never know what’s going to happen, so I’m going there to win.” Rosberg made his second pit stop on lap 26, with Hamilton less than two seconds behind him. The 29-year-old Brit stayed out and set the fastest lap of the race to that point next time around, having been faster than anyone over three sectors. Mercedes engineers, who calculated his first lap had not been enough to leapfrog him ahead, decided to keep him out for one more lap to give him extra time to build the advantage he needed. But Hamilton dropped a wheel on to the white line on the
entry to Turn Four, the Descido do Lago, and ran wide into the runoff area, half-spinning. “Ultimately, it cost me the win,” said Hamiltom. “I was a much quicker up to that point. I went a second quicker, thought I was going to pit on that lap, used all my tyres and on the next lap there was nothing left. I locked the rear and went wide. No one’s mistake but mine.” Rosberg came in first for his final stop, on lap 50, with Hamilton making his a lap later, and their battle resumed with them half-a-second apart on lap 52, which was 19 from the finish. Hamilton, clearly faster and seeking his sixth consecutive win, stayed within a second of Rosberg for the remainder of the race but was never close enough to make a passing attempt.
So Rosberg took his fifth win of the season his first since Germany back in July. And who knows what shenanigans he might consider if Hamilton has the upper hand on Sunday. The German has not been afraid to pull some blatant strokes this season to hinder his rival - and he was forced to make a public apology by his own Mercedes officials after one dreadful manoeuvre in which he damaged the front of Hamilton’s car badly and went on to clinch vital points. Felipe Massa, a great crowd favourite having been brought up in the area, took third in the Williams, despite a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, and pulling into the McLaren pits by mistake at his final stop. The two incidents cost him time, but he was still able to hold off McLaren’s Jenson But-
ton comfortably. But the 2009 world champion’s performance may well give McLaren pause for thought as they decide who will partner Fernando Alonso, The Spaniard joins the team next year, and the veteran British driver could still secure his McLaren position, despite his talks of retiring from F1. Back to the main protagonists and, despite the double points potentially working to his advantage, Rosberg says he finds the innovation “artificial, and I don’t like it in general”. But Hamilton remains open-minded. “We need to keep on reviewing it,” he said. “It’s good to try something, and we’ll see how it goes this year.” He added: “The important thing is that the fans are happy. We need to see if we keep on doing it or change.”
