Easter in Tenerife

THOUSANDS of people will be travelling this Easter to the tourist areas of the south, plus the other nearby islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, to spend a few days in the sun. The ports have experienced queues of traffic and the airports an influx of arrivals. This Easter is a little different, with the political and social instability in tourist destinations such as Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. It has triggered a number of addition-

al tourist arrivals from Europe, with an occupancy that exceeds 85%. Tenerife is expecting bumper tourist figures for the Easter holidays, and the trend is likely to continue right through the summer. For the first time since 2007, the holiday sector in the Canary Islands is showing definite signs of recuperation, albeit slight. And a leading on-line travel agent is sure the Canary Islands will rank among the most popular destinations for British travellers this year. The prediction comes as a welcome relief to hoteliers, plus restaurants and bars

following the dreadful airline and airport pitfalls and strikes over the last couple of years. These include the horrific Iceland Ash Cloud disaster of last year and the appalling UK winter weather, which

had a terrible effect on the tourist industry. Thousands of visitors were stranded in Tenerife for weeks as numerous flights to the UK were cancelled, and several vowed never to return to the Island.

Tourists pouring in THE number of passengers arriving at Tenerife South and North airports on Wednesday was 42,204. There were 22,802 passengers in the South, and a further 19,402 recorded at the North’s Los Rodeos airport. But those high figures will be

overtaken tomorrow (Easter Saturday). Throughout the Canary Islands during Holy Week, some 1.5 million visitors will pass through the airports, which is an overall increase of 9% over the Easter period last year.

Suddenly, though, the sun shines on us again. One pointer, says the Canarian Government, is the overall drop in unemployment last year, again slight, at 0.1%. It sounds minimal, yet this welcome decrease is largely down to more tourism jobs becoming available through increased demand. Latest figures, released at the end of March, show the inter-annual increase as a respectable 5.17% in the number of tourists visiting the islands. These positive signs are backed up by a report from online travel agents On the Beach, who reveal that holidays to the Canaries are

becoming increasingly popular with their UK customers. They have already seen a significant rise in visits to Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria so far this year, and Alistair Daly, the company’s Marketing Director, said: “In the past few months, we have seen a surge of holidaymakers to the Canaries. “We believe this has been prompted by the poor winter weather, as many of our customers were compelled to escape on last-minute holidays to get some warmth. Of course, there is no denying the popularity of this great group of island destinations.”

Mercadona bag a profit SPANISH RETAIL operator Mercadona has posted steady growth in sales and earnings for 2010, despite the difficult economic backdrop. For the 12 months to the end of December Mercadona registered a 6.3% increase in gross sales, while net income came in 47% higher at EUR398m. The firm invested EUR600mn during the year to open 46 new outlets and revealed plans to open a further 65 new outlets in 2011. This growth is evidence of the firm’s successful low cost business strategy, which has done well during the downturn and is likely to continue performing strongly given our relatively weak outlook for the Spanish economic recovery. Mercadona operates around 1,300 supermarkets in Spain, its strategy is built around consistently offering the best possible prices, rather than short-term price promotions. The company has continued to lower prices during the downturn and claims that its average prices fell by 4% during 2010. When combined with price cuts of 10% in 2009 the firm claims to have gen-

HOTELIERS, together with restaurant, bar and café owners, and their workers, have been called to a mass protest against Spain’s anti-smoking law in Madrid on May 9. The Government’s new ruling became effective from 2nd January, banning smoking in all closed public spaces. Now a new group, Libertad Sin Humo (Freedom Without Smoke), wants it replaced with less restrictive legislation. The Spanish Hostelry Federation (FEHR) has joined

erated savings for its customers since 2008. After taking steps to enhance productivity and innovation and to streamline its product line to adapt to the needs of its customers the company has:•created 1,500 new direct permanent jobs, increasing its total workforce to 63,500. •achieved a 4% drop in prices in 2010 resulted in savings of 980 euros per household per year, translating into savings of 2,200 million euros for its customers and for the country’s economy following the 14% drop in prices since 2008. Mercadona develop initia-

tives that offer customers added value. In 2010, Mercadona worked jointly with its suppliers and integrated suppliers to renew its selection, implementing only those innovations that the customer is willing to pay for while stopping all those which do not add value. Among the examples of the collaboration are the initiatives carried out with the Bonnysa Agroalimentaria, Lacasa, Bodegas Ontañón, L’Oréal, RNB Cosméticos, Pescanova, Ubesol-Maverick, Chocolates Valor and Embutidos Monter. The measures adopted by all of these companies, which included launching

new products, optimizing packaging and streamlining their selections, led to sales of these products that were above the market average. These twelve months also saw Mercadona report on the measures it is taking to comply with the Integrated National Plan for Waste to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags by educating customers, introducing reusable bags and charging for them. This week Mercadona are no longer providing free carrier bags, with the consumer having to pay 2cents, 10 cents or 60cents per bag depending on your selection.

Already, it has collected nearly 600,000 supportive signatures, and plans to present a petition to Congress and the Ombudsman in the first week of May. The FEHR President, José María Rubio, who announced the group’s launch on Monday, says the hostelry sector has been hammered to the tune of more than 20%. And bingo-hall owners have fared even worse, saying their income dropped by 30% in the first three months of the year.

New markets to open in US - and Canada TENERIFE TOURISM has continued their strategy for 2011 by opening new markets. This is the case of Canada, the U.S. and Israel, in which the island has been conducting various activities to enable the launch of flights to these three countries, all with a broad increase in potential tourists. In the U.S., for example, they have launched a campaign aimed at users of the iPad, the electronic device Apple tablet which has more than 15 million users. To this end, they have developed an application in which information is available with a video of Tenerife. It will be operational for a year and will be promoted through banner ads on the websites of different tour operators, not only U.S. but also Canada and in the United Kingdom. Although Tenerife has had a direct flight to Miami in

previous seasons (it remained until September 2010), at present, U.S. travelers wishing to visit the island can do so via Madrid or Barcelona, as well as through many other European airports. With the United States, Canada is another market in which Turismo de Tenerife is exploring the possibility of opening an air link with the island, a destination that is attractive to Canadians for its climate and diversity. In May, a group of journalists will visit the island and come to know all our attractions as a holiday destination and then produce articles and reports. Whilst in Israel, Tenerife is considering the implementation of a direct flight. Thus, among the most recent actions highlighted is the visit by the tour operator ROIM Olam just made to the island to get to know our destination, and it has already generated a group of fifty direct customers for the month of June. Tenerife Tourism has developed activities in previous years in this market, including annual attendance at the fair IMTM Tel Aviv, the largest in the country.

Be proud to be English!

Sunday storm leaves market traders awash LAST Sunday’s downpour proved too much for some areas of the South. Parts of Los Cristianos suffered sever flooding due to a mixture of rainfall and backed up sewers.

RECENT habits die hard, which is why Linekers Bar staff have retained last year’s Be Proud To Be English! slogan for their big St George’s Day party tomorrow (Saturday 23rd April). The Linekers bash, in Playa de Las Americas, starts at 4pm, and will be broadcast live on Oasis Fm from 5pm. There’s a whole host of live entertainment in store, featuring some of the leading acts in South Tenerife, including the TIBU House Band, plus Didi and Hayley, Darren Hill, Robbie Dominic, Mikey Mike and I.S. and a bunch of other top artists. It will definitely be a day to remember, judging by the last two St George’s Days at Linekers, and one not to miss. Unusually St George’s Day and Easter fall on the same weekend so if you want to celebrate Easter then La Laguna hosts one of the Canary Islands’ most historical and impressive Holy Week celebrations. The pro-

Page 04

gramme features numerous processions and acts of devotion which continue all weekend. Holy Week in La Laguna is one of the most traditional expressions of religious and cultural life in the Canary Islands. Over the course of the various days visitors are invited to enjoy the city’s rich and varied religious heritage. There will be parades of statues of the Virgin de Candelaria through the town’s most emblematic streets, which prove ever so popular. These processions offer a fantastic example of the religious imagery that has been crafted in the Canary Islands and beyond over the past five centuries. The most important ceremonies and activities take place today, Good Friday. The major event is the Magna Procession in which religious fraternities depart from Concepción Church at 5pm in the afternoon and parade through the streets of the town. A silent procession then takes place at nine in the evening. Until next week…

The area suffered the worse flooding since 2007, when drainage problems were then said to be at fault. Although the rain fell heavily at a rate of one litre per minute, urban planning is thought also to be at fault. The Sunday Market in Los Cristianos was just one of the hotspots as traders were quickly waist deep in water which backed up and covered and area from the Taxi rank to the Arona Grand Hotel. Apparently the problem is caused by water running rapidly from the Guaza Mountain which happens

once in every 50 years, for which there appears to be no sufficient drainage, the council intend to make a study of urban drainage Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos to determine the works necessary to

ensure proper access to the sea for these flows of water. In another area of Los Cristianos next to the promenade sewage overflowed, here the risk is serious, “it’s channeled from the vicinity of the TF-1 by an arc of 4x4

meters to enter the town, later it has an open channeling 4x2 meters, and finally 3x3 size to the mouth. “The final section has a drainage system but is “insufficient in case of flood,” Photos: Maggie Lennard

Top Dog out to spoil your pets THE Top Dog animal grooming parlour, now open in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, promises to pamper your pets. Owners Melody and Chris, well known in Los Cristianos for the last 15 years, used to run Apolo Travel and Apolo Properties. Now, however, they are turning their attentions to pet grooming and have recruited Samantha, from Cambridge to assist them.

She has been appointed head groomer after running her own parlour in the UK. She was happy there, but simply couldn’t resist that “once in a lifetime” opportunity to work at what she loves doing best, here in the sun. Samantha is fully qualified, obtaining her City & Guilds and National Diploma from the College of Animal Welfare. Top Dog also sells food and toys, and there is a super 25% off your grooming until the end of the month. You will find the parlour

inside the Apolo Centre on the ground floor, so call 922 792 266 for an appointment, or just pop in and say

hello. It is open from 9.30am-6pm on MondayFriday, and 9.30am-1pm on Saturdays.

Semana Santa in Santa Cruz

Arico want rid of the campers THE ARICO council wants to stop illegal camping on the coast during this Holy Week.

THE PORT of Santa Cruz has this week welcommed ten cruise ships with a total of 25,649 visitors, 18,700 of them cruise ship passengers and 6,949 crew. Of this total, 8,560 visitors arrived yesterday on Holy Thursday in four ships arriving in the port, and today – Friday – three cruise liners are expected, carrying 9,189 passengers. Specifically, docking are “Black Watch”, “Independence of the Seas”, “Delphin” and

“Ryndam”, many ships dock for the day and then go on to destinations such as Funchal in Maderia or Arrecife in Lanzarote. Today’s arrivals totaling 9,189 include 7,050 cruise ship passengers and 2,139 crew. The ships landing include the “Island Escape”, and the “AIDAbella” that brings 2,839 visitors and the “MSC Orchestra”, with 3,750. On Saturday, 23rd the “Empress” odcks with 2,100 passengers in port celebrating Easter Sunday the “Queen Elizabeth” with 2,900 passengers, 2,000 of them cruisers mostly British nationality.

The privileged situation of the municipality of Arico and its special charm means that it is besieged by thousands of campers, so the council are on high alert. “We have already instructed the local police to proceed with the eviction of all those citizens who are camped and offenders will be recorded.” said the Security council and government spokesperson, Alvaro Arbelo. “Concurrently, we have placed a series of informative posters in different parts of our coast reminding people about the prohibition of free camping, as a warning,” the Arico Mayor emphasised. “The municipality has a designated camping, with proper facilities. It has all the services for the

camper and, therefore, they would be much more comfortable and better addressed there,“ he highlighted. In Abades a 72 hour rotation has been enforced, so one camper van is only allowed to stay 72 hours before moving on. The spokesman believes that the formula of the 72hour “allows more campers to enjoy the Abades area.” The Arico council pointed out “we are sensitive to campers and ask them to be sensitive to the municipality and do not camp out in places not allowed” due to the high environmental degradation that occurs. “We are not willing to tolerate what happens every year at holiday times. In fact, at the end of Easter 2010 we had to carry out important environmental recovery in areas of the municipality, which are the areas attractive to those who practice camping.“ He said that “last year at the end of this holiday period we

took over 30 tons of rubbish away.” This was at great cost to the municipality which they are not willing to repeat again this year.

Hence this year they will be very vigilant that rules are respected and they will act to evict those who are camped illegally.“

Policing Granadilla coastline THE SAFETY and security on the coast of Granadilla de Abona has become a priority this Easter, ensuring there is sufficient cover of all services that may be needed during the days where there are large numbers of users on the beaches in the area. The mayor, Carmen Nieves Gaspar Rivero, said in a statement that there will be increases in the number of lifeguards and hours of service due to the large number of swimmers over the weekend. The monitoring schedule that until now has been eight hours, will now be 10 hours, in particular, starting at 10.00 and ending at 20.00 hours

and the number of lifeguards will be 6 in different bathing areas. Beaches with additional security include the big beach of El Medano, Leocadio Machado, Los Balos and La Tejita. Gaspar Rivero emphasised that Granadilla de Abona “has a beautiful coastline that still retains the charm of the people, this plus the fact that we have the best natural beaches of Tenerife, means that during this time many tourists and visitors alike come to this part of the island to enjoy not only the beach, but also of many religious ceremonies that are organised in different parishes of the municipality.“

SO popular is the Tenerife Loves Karaoke competition that when it resumed after a short break, at O’Jangles in Los Cristianos, those who couldn’t get a seat watched it on the big screen outside. Support for the singers and the contest at this 11th heat on Wednesday was just as vibrant as it had been for all the previous rounds. And such was the high level of performance that the judges again had a hard time finding the three heat finalists. It took ages for them to make their minds up, as the singers waited and waited for the verdict because of the closeness of the scoring and the checking and rechecking. Finally, they delivered their verdict and from the trio, Cat Langham emerged triumphant and went through to the grand final. Cat became the first contestant to win at his/her local bar, and it means there are nine females and two males in

the final so far. The Grand Final takes place on 14th May at Showtime, Las Americas, where all the heat winners will compete for the 500euro cash prize, a 12-track recording session at Villa Studios, a contract with Paul James Associates, and the title of Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2011. If you would like to com-

pete for this fabulous prize package, then HURRY, HURRY, HURRY. There are only three heats left, at the Blarney Stone in Playa de la Arena tomorrow (Saturday), La Gua Gua, Fanabe Beach Front, next Friday (29th April) and lastly, Wigan Pier, Las Americas, on Sunday, 8th May: So if you are interested in

competing in the BIGGEST AND MOST POPULAR talent contest this year, we recommend that you book your place now as the remaining 45 places are being filled quickly. To enter, call Oasis Fm on 902 232 102, register at the venues or via Facebook, or come along and just have a great night out.

ETA murderer disappears after his wrongful release from prison A MEMBER of ETA was last week released from a 2,700-year sentence for killing 22 people, then had the decision reversed by a Spanish court. He should have been rearrested on Wednesday, but

police can’t trace 53-year-old Antonio Troitino, of the armed Basque separatist group. Spain’s National Court revoked its own decision to release him and ordered his search and capture after prosecutors appealed against the decision. Troitino was arrested in

1987 as a member of the Madrid unit of ETA and sentenced to more than 2,700 years, even though the maximum prison term in Spain is 30 years. He was freed on 13th April after requesting that the six years he had spent in prison before sentencing be discounted from his term.

The court subtracted those six years from the 30-year maximum jail time instead of the actual 2,700-year sentence because the law was not clear on the matter. But after an appeal by prosecutors, the court agreed that the six years should be discounted from the actual sentence.

The seven-month event, staged across the Arona Municipality, showcased traditional Island folk music and dancing, and attracted a grand total of some 70,000 spectators, both residents and tourists. The final show was attended by Arona Mayor José Alberto González Reverón, and Tourism Councillor Ángel David Herrera González, who joined the crowd to watch the groups I’Gara and Amigos de Punta Rasca perform. Gonzalez said that following the success of the first festival, this one was staged with even more events, and covered more of the mostvisited areas in the Arona region.

“This festival is another way to put Arona to the forefront as an excellent tourist destination,” he said. “It has allowed residents and visitors to ‘feel Canarian’ by way of the music and dance. “It has also contributed to enliven commercial activity for local businesses by bringing tourists to each of the areas, and making Arona really dynamic.” The festival began last October and took place every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Los Cristianos, Las Galletas and Playa de Las Americas, with performances from Verodal-Casino de Arona, Amigos de Punta Rasca, Agrupación Folclórica I´gara and the Escuela Municipal de Folclore de Arona, as well as the group Guargazal. Spectators were also able to buy some traditional products from around the Island at every event, such as wines, sweets and cheeses.

It’s looking black for cash-in-hand Spanish workers THE Spanish Government is cracking down on the so-called “submerged economy” with a zero-tolerance attitude. Officials will be targeting both sole traders and companies in a bid to wipe out the cash-in-hand brigade. This is partially to protect vulnerable people such as non-EU immigrants from working in slave-like condi-

tions, with no contracts and, therefore, no legal rights or social security to fall back on. But is the Government also wants to claw back those taxes and social security payments which are being ignored by bosses and individuals, The Department of Social Security pledges to be particularly strict with those people on the dole but working ·”on the black” at the same time, and fines ranging from 12,000-500.000 euros are

threatened, depending on the circumstances. They would also have their dole money stopped. Yet for most people claiming dole and working for cash, it is a question of survival. When their dole money payments eventually expire, they may not have found a job still, and will have to rely on their cash-in-hand wages. A close watch on potential offenders will start imminently and be concluded within a year.

Gizmo grabs a new home

They rode via Accion Del Sol for a whistle-stop tour of the refuge and to offer a carrot or two for the horses, before completing the ride and enjoying a well-deserved barbecue. Marion says: “A really big thank-you to everyone who sponsored this event, and to the five hardy riders.” If you can help Accion Del Sol in any way, whether by dog-walking or by donating items to raise a few euros to help the many dogs there, then please call Marion, who runs the centre.

Arona cops all on same wavelength THE local police in Arona have been issued with new, hightech communications equipment, thanks to the introduction of the TETRA system. It stands for Terrestrial Trunked Radio and is an emergency communications system, first introduced to UK police in the early 2000s. The force now has 39 of these mobile radio units, supplied by the Canarian Government’s Security and Emergencies Department. Manuel Reverón, Arona’s Councillor for Security, says the radios are the first part of a whole range of equipment, which will allow all the mobile units to communicate with each other more efficiently. “This equipment is integrated into the RESCAN network, which is dedicated solely for the use of the emergency and security services within the Canary Islands,” said Reverón. “It will bring about a notable improvement in the co-ordination between the different services involved

Page 10

in the emergency and security network, giving us a much greater integration.” The TETRA system allows for the co-existence of multiple channels on the same network, giving urgent emergency communications priority over ordinary telephone usage. Since the technology is now digital as well, conversations will be much clearer and there will no longer be noise problems as there have been with the old analogue system. Finally, the 39 new terminals come with a full Global Positioning System (GPS). This is a space-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS), which tells drivers how to get to where they are going.

Mobile.phone drivers talk their way into a fine by traffic police NEARLY 3,400 drivers have been fined by police for using their mobile phones during a special one-week campaign run by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). During the campaign, which spelled out the dangers of being distracted behind the wheel, vehicles were monitored on the roads across Spain. It ran from 4-10th April and during that period, 4,201 fines were issued to drivers who were distracted at the wheel, 3,387 of them for talking on their mobiles. It is widely felt by experts that using mobiles while driving multiplies the risk of having an accident by four, which equates to the dangers of drink-driving. As well as controlling the “improper use” of mobiles, police also monitored the use of GPS (Global Positioning

Systems) by drivers, which is considered a similar distraction to talking on the phone. It led to 38 drivers being fined for programming their GPS systems while driving along. A further 169 people were fined for using headphones or earphones connected to appliances other than telephones. The Guardia Civil reported

that 24% of divers stopped during the campaign were using “hands-free” devices. This is permitted under the traffic laws, but it is still considered to be a distraction. The Traffic Department said in a statement: “Drivers on the phone don’t keep their speed constant. Their reaction time is greater and they tend not to keep a safe dis-

tance from the car in front.” Traffic chiefs also underlined that distractions at the wheel were one of the main causes of accidents in Spain and could be avoided easily. By 14th April, 168 people had lost their lives in 329 fatal accidents on Spanish roads and, in 158 of those fatalities, driver-distraction was considered an important factor.

Aussie asylum rioters torch detention centre and attack firefighters RIOTING asylum-seekers have caused extensive damage at an Australian detention centre, setting alight buildings and attacking firefighters.

Online law could hit millions hard A NEW law to tackle online piracy has been backed by the High Court despite fears that it could lead to millions of innocent people having their privacy invaded. The Digital Economy Act 2010 is aimed at clamping down on illegal internet filesharing and protecting intellectual property rights on the web. Copyright infringements online are thought to cost the UK economy £400m a year, and supporters of the legislation said they were “delighted” with the ruling by the judge Mr Justice Parker. They said it would be a major boost to people in the creative industries whose livelihoods were put at risk because their output was being stolen “daily”. The judge rejected claims by BT and TalkTalk, two of the UK’s largest internet service providers (ISPs), that the Act was seriously

flawed and “incompatible” with European law. The two ISPs had argued that measures introduced under the Act would unlawfully “impact on the privacy and free expression rights” of consumers, and interfere with customer relationships. BT and TalkTalk also said the new law, brought in by the Business Secretary Vince Cable, could potentially putting the privacy of millions of innocent customers at risk. They also challenged the legality of the statutory order, currently before Parliament in draft form, designed to regulate sharing the costs of implementing the new legislation. But Mr Justice Parker dismissed all the claims, except for one relating to the costs order, when he removed the ISPs’ obligation to pay 25% of watchdog Ofcom’s costs and the costs of establishing an appeals body. The new legislation went through in the final days of

the last Labour government. It was first mooted by then business secretary Lord Mandelson who launched a crackdown just days after spending time on the yacht of a leading critic of illegal file sharing, record label founder David Geffen. The coalition decided not to repeal it and is now working on implementing elements of the Act. A spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said: “We are pleased that the court has recognised these measures as both lawful and proportionate. “The Government remains committed to tackling online piracy and so will set out the next steps for implementation of the Digital Economy Act shortly.” A BT spokesman said: “We are disappointed with the outcome of the judicial review. We are reviewing this long and complex judgment. “Protecting our customers

is our number one priority and we will consider our options once we have fully understood the implications for our customers and businesses. “This was always about seeking clarity on certain points of law and we have to consider whether this judgment achieves these aims.”

About 100 men were involved in the disturbances which raged throughout the night at the Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney. Nine buildings were seriously damaged including a medical centre, kitchen and computer room. Riot police were called in by the private security firm which runs the centre. Firefighters who tried to extinguish the blazes were pelted with roof tiles and bits of wood. An explosion is thought to have been caused by a gas bottle catching fire. The Centre houses around 400 detainees seeking asylum or are awaiting deportation for breaches of their visas. Australia has a policy of detaining refuges until their claims for asylum have been investigated and processed, but human rights campaigners say some men have been

waiting up to two years for their cases to be dealt with. In the past six months six people have died while in custody, and last year a British man committed suicide at Villawood. David Saunders was awaiting deportation to face criminal charges in the UK. It is the second major disturbance by asylum seekers in the past month. In March there was a mass breakout and riot at the Christmas Island Detention Centre, which has become overcrowded because of the number of refugees trying to reach Australia by boat. Some of the ringleaders were moved to Villawood but the government says there is no evidence any of them were involved in the latest riot. By mid-morning six protesters were still on the roof, beside a makeshift banner reading ‘We Need Help’. Immigration department spokesman Sandi Logan said, “This is not behaviour of someone who wishes to become part of the Australian community.”

William and Kate ‘visit Diana’s grave’ PRINCE WILLIAM has taken his bride-to-be Kate Middleton to visit the grave of his mother, reports say. The couple are said to have taken flowers to the island where Diana, Princess of Wales is buried. Clarence House would not comment, saying the matter was private. But Prince William has already said his mother is very much in his mind at this special time. With just over a week to go until the Royal Wedding, the Royal Mail has issued stamps

to commemorate the event. The stamps - featuring engagement pictures of Prince William and Kate Middleton by Mario Testino are available from Post Office branches across the UK. As with all commemorative Royal stamps, the Queen had to give her final approval for their issue - Prince William, the Royal Mail said, also approved the pictures. Ahead of the big day, Queen Elizabeth II began her 85th birthday celebrations by attending a traditional Royal

Maundy Service at Westminster Abbey. Choristers and clergy at the Royal Wedding venue used the Easter ceremony as a rehearsal for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s nuptials in just over a week’s time. One of Her Majesty’s birthday presents is a digital camera featuring 15,000 children’s drawings of the monarch. Beer lovers in the capital will be able to toast the royal couple ahead of their big day with a special ale created just for the occasion.

‘Changing-room rage’ is a curse for most women

A bungled sea rescue A GRANDMOTHER is fighting for her life in hospital after a rescue attempt went badly wrong and she was dropped overboard by paramedics into the freezing Arctic Ocean.

THREE-QUARTERS of women suffer from ‘changing room rage’ when they are shopping, according to a new study. Cramped, cluttered and exposed fitting rooms can make trying on clothes such a traumatic experience that it manifests itself in feelings of anger, disappointment and bouts of bad temper. The condition - dubbed CRR - can sometimes lead to shoppers snapping at retail assistants, storming out of stores and even losing self-confidence, according to the study of more than 1,200 women for isme.com. Around 75% of shoppers questioned said they had stopped trying on clothes due to the state of changing rooms and half said they waited to try clothes on at home.

When asked about their emotional state after visiting a high street changing room, 58% of women claimed they felt disappointed and 48% said they were left feeling frustrated. Major gripes include curtains which do not shut properly, long queues and a lack of space. Adult behaviour psychologist Susan Quilliam said: “Beautiful clothes will always make a woman feel more beautiful and therefore more positive about her appearance, more confident in herself and more optimistic in general. “But if the shopping experience itself is negative, the whole event can be utterly destructive. “Instead of boosting our self-esteem, it saps it; instead of making us feel good about ourselves and our lives, it brings up frustration, irritation and anger.”

Janet Richardson, 73, was being transferred onto another boat after suffering internal bleeding on a cruise ship when the incident happened off the coast of Norway. Paramedics were moving the pensioner on a stretcher to the smaller vessel when the two boats moved apart. The stretcher slipped from their grasp and she tumbled into the -3C sea. It took four minutes to pluck her from the freezing waves before she was taken to hospital in the Norwegian town of Bodo about two miles away. Mrs Richardson, from Penrith, Cumbria, is now in intensive care at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary after being airlifted to the UK. She is being treated both for her original illness and complications caused by her Arctic Ocean plunge. Mrs Richardson was on a cruise with her husband George, 78, when she was taken ill. They were on board Ocean Countess, which had left Hull at the end of March on a coastal tour of Norway

including viewings of the Northern Lights. The worried captain called in a rescue boat to take her to hospital but the operation went horribly wrong. Luckily, Mrs Richardson was wearing a lifebelt which kept her afloat. A spokesman for the rescuers, who have apologised for the mistake, said they have been “very affected” by the experience.

recovery and we are encouraged to hear that Mrs Richardson is now back in the UK and we wish her a speedy recovery. “We would like to reassure all of our passengers that health and safety is of paramount importance to Cruise and Maritime Voyages. “And we will of course be co-operating fully with the investigation, which is still ongoing.”

Warm weather brings early shark sightings FOUR MEN on a mackerel fishing trip were “amazed” to see an early sighting of basking sharks within metres of their boat in Donegal Bay. Local fisherman Brian Smith was returning to Killybegs harbour on Tuesday afternoon with his group when they noticed some unusual activity in the water. Mr Smith said, “There were four of us out on the boat fishing in Donegal Bay, fishing for mackerel, when an 18ft (5.4m) basking shark appeared near the boat.

Page 12

Police are investigating the incident. The cruise operators were Cruise and Maritime Voyages. The firm’s marketing director Chris Coates said: “Our heartfelt sympathies are with Mrs Richardson and her family after what must have been a traumatic experience. “We have been in regular contact with the Richardson family throughout her

“We saw the fins coming up first and it was splashing about the surface. It just swam near the boat, metres away from us. “We pulled out the cameras and started taking photos and filming it. It was an amaz-

ing sight to be so close to such an amazing creature. “We saw about 20 basking sharks that day. I have never seen so many at this time of year. “On Monday, there were six basking sharks at Fintra beach, too - locals could see them from the shore. It was amazing,” he said. It is thought the sharks are being lured by plankton which has bloomed early because of the warm weather. The gentle giant is the largest fish to be found in the coastal waters of the British Isles. Measuring anything up to 39ft (12m) long, and weighing up to 7 tonnes, it feeds on animal plankton. During the summer

months, it favours Cornish, Devon, Manx, Irish and Scottish waters as its regular feeding grounds. In the UK, the first official basking shark sighting for 2011 was recorded by scuba divers at Roskilly Beach, Newlyn, in Cornwall, on March 20, according to The Wildlife Trusts. The Trust says reports of sightings usually start in May. However, research has shown an observed shift in the distribution of sightings of basking sharks in recent years, which may also be due to the rising sea temperatures caused by climate change.

Doctor Who actress loses cancer battle

Booze, drugs and obesity keep dole office really busy MORE than 80,000 people are claiming incapacity benefit for obesity and addiction to alcohol and drugs, according to Government figures.

DOCTOR WHO actress Elisabeth Sladen has died of cancer at the age of 63. She joined the programme in 1973 and became one of the most popular companions in her role as Sarah Jane Smith. In 2007 she was given her own spin-off series, the Sarah Jane Adventures, which introduced her to a new generation of fans. It was not generally known Ms Sladen had been suffering from ill health. She leaves behind her husband, the actor Brian Miller, and daughter Sadie. Warm tributes have been paid to the Liverpool-born actress, known to her friends and family as Lis. Russell T Davies, creator of The Sarah Jane Adventures, which won this year’s RTS Award for best children’s drama, said all those involved in the series had been left “reeling” at news of her death. He said: “I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply

Page 14

wonderful. Sladen starred in Doctor Who alongside Jon Pertwee, the third doctor, and his successor Tom Baker. She then returned to the series on a number of occasions over the years before her own CBBC show was created, in which she starred as an investigative journalist trying to defend Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Doctor Who lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said she was a “ferociously talented actress”. Her agent Roger Carey said: “She was not just a client, but a dear friend. She was so positive about life and her natural energy was intoxicating. She couldn’t believe her luck when her career was resurrected in her own series.” Ms Sladen had spoken of her excitement at being involved in Doctor Who and the Sarah Jane Adventures in a BBC online interview. She said of her early days as Sarah Jane: “I hit a lovely time in the series. I hit the time of Pertwee and Baker, and sometimes you can almost taste when something is really working.”

One in four has been receiving the payouts for more than 10 years, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said. It released the figures in an attempt to boost public support for its wide-ranging reforms to the welfare system. All incapacity benefit (IB) claimants are currently being reassessed to see if they are fit to work, in what the Government has called the biggest back-to-work programme in recent history. Initial pilots indicate 500,000 people are likely to be found fit to work of the two million who claim IB. The Government’s figures show 81,760 people are dependent on payouts because they are obese (1,830) or suffering from drug (37,480) or alcohol problems (42,360). Some 12,880 alcoholics and 9,200 drug addicts have been dependent on incapacity benefit for more than 10 years, along with 660 obese people. Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: “It’s not fair on anyone for this situation to continue. “Far from being the safety net it should be, the benefits system has trapped thousands of people in a cycle of

addiction and welfare dependency with no prospect of getting back to work. “We are putting an end to this, we won’t allow people to be left on benefits and forgotten about. “That’s why we have already started reassessing everyone on incapacity benefit and will support people with addictions to help them back into work.” The current 2.1 million people on incapacity benefit cost taxpayers £7bn a year. The benefit is paid at three weekly rates: £68.95 for the first 28 weeks, £81.60 from weeks 29-52 and £91.40 from week 53. However, charities have expressed fears that remov-

ing benefits from vulnerable people could make their situation even worse. Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said: “We have serious doubts about whether the DWP is committed to investing in the infrastructure needed to support dependent drinkers back into work and if it actually just wants to cut the welfare benefits bill.” He added: “Cutting benefits for problem drinkers is simply going to cost the state more in the long run as problem drinkers get more desperate, become homeless and beg for money. Shadow work and pensions secretary Liam Byrne said the real problem stopping getting

people back to work was a lack of jobs. He said: “It was Labour that changed the law to start testing people on incapacity benefit to see who was fit for work. “But the real problem now is the Tories’ decision to cut too far and too fast has meant that unemployment is set to increase every year - by up to 200,000 more people - helping push the benefits bill up by a massive £12bn or £500 for every household in Britain. The DWP figuresare a snapshot of incapacity benefit claimants in August 2010. Since February 2010, no new claimants have been accepted.

MARIANO E ZUNINO SIRI Understanding the Law Email: marianozunino@canarianweekly.com

It’s sheer Will-power! I HAVE received some queries regarding the last article - my second concerning Spanish Wills – and I will do my best to answer a couple of the more popular ones. I am now resident in Tenerife and I do not have properties here but only in England. In Tenerife, I have only bank accounts. What is my position according to the situations you explained in your article? BT (Amarilla Golf) Is it better to transfer the properties to my children instead of granting Spanish Wills? JB (Arona) I will continue with my last article and try to answer

Page 18

these queries. Note that I am just giving a general idea, and every case has to be studied individually. It is advisable to contact an expert, not only from the legal point of view but also when facing the inheritance taxes. At the end of my last article I said: There are many different points of view, and the Supreme Court has different opinions in some cases as well. But, normally, the idea is that the Inheritance should be governed by one law (in this case Spanish law) to be uniform. Bear in mind that Spanish Law states the “legitima”, which is a portion of the inheritance that legally goes to the legal inheritors (decedent). The situations (in general terms) could be:

1) Decedent leaving properties (immovables) only in Spain and his/her last address was in UK. 2) Decedent leaving properties (immovables) in Spain and his/her last address was also in Spain. 3) Decedent leaving properties (immovables) in UK and only movables in Spain with last address in UK. 4) Decedent leaving properties (immovables) in Spain and UK and last address in UK. I’ll continue now: 1) In this case, the applicable law would be Spanish law (to the immovables, of course). 2).The applicable law would be Spanish law and the Court would apply Spanish law to the inheritance. 3) The Spanish Court must apply British law to the

inheritance. This is a general rule and you have to bear in mind that we are referring to the inheritors and the interest of those entitled to the inheritance, and not to the law applicable to the inheritance taxes to be paid in Spain. The most common case is the decedent resident in UK leaving monies in a bank account in Spain. 4) The applicable law would be British law. Remember that these are general rules, and we have to keep in mind that every case is different in order to determine which is the applicable law (things are not so easy in this matters). Regarding Spanish Wills, although it is not necessary, it is advisable. Spanish authorities accept a British Will, but the proceeding would be more expensive.

You (or the inheritors) could save many costs by signing a Spanish Will. Bear in mind also that an “ab-intestato” inheritance (inheritance with no Will) could be very complicated. Answer to question 1: He would be included in Item 3 with the difference of the address (in Tenerife). In any case, the inheritance law refers to last address (or last domicile), which we do not know yet. In case of a British national leaving bank accounts in Spain, with the last address in Tenerife, the applicable law would be British law, taking into account that this law could say that the applicable law is the one of the last residence of the decedent. If so, British law would be resending to Spanish law (see my article Spanish Wills I).

Answer to question 2: The reader is saying “transferring” the properties to the children. I assume he would like to transfer them “for free”. If so, this would be a donation and taxes would have to be paid. He is not saying what his nationality (I assume he is British) and if he is resident in Spain (and in such case how long he was resident?). To grant an Spanish Will (before Notary Public) is always advisable and, before signing, it would be a good idea to discuss its contents with a lawyer (instead of doing a standard Will). Sir Bobby Charlton – Football Icon Thursday 28 April, 9.00pm, BBC2 To compliment the BBC Two drama United, BBC Sport presents a special documentary looking back at the remarkable career of arguably England’s most iconic and greatest ever footballer: Sir Bobby Charlton. Sir Bobby was a key member of the England team that won the World Cup on home soil in 1966 and part of a Manchester United team touched by success and tragedy in equal measure. Charlton survived the Munich Air disaster in 1958 which killed several of his teammates, dubbed the Busby Babes. He became a crucial figure in the club’s resurgence, winning two league titles and, unforgettably, in 1968, the European Cup against Benfica. Renowned for his attacking instincts and ferocious long-range shot, he is still the record goal scorer for England and Manchester United. He received a knighthood in 1994 and was awarded the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. A fiercely proud Englishman, Charlton helped to promote London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games, plus bids for the Fifa World Cup and Manchester’s hosting of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He remains a pivotal figure at Manchester United as an ambassador, Club Director and close confidante of manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The programme features incredible archive from Sir Bobby’s life in football plus poignant contributions on the Munich crash from survivors including Sir Bobby himself. It also hears from the biggest names in world football, including Franz Beckenbauer, Eusebio, David Beckham, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Geoff Hurst, Harry Greig, Gordon Banks, Ryan Giggs, Gary Lineker and Bobby’s brother, Jack Charlton, who all pay tribute to the much-loved man they simply call “Sir Bobby”.

Training with world-class choreographers and working across an array of dance styles – lyrical hip hop to disco, commercial to jazz and Broadway to ballroom – the top 20 dancers take to the floor hoping to impress the judges and win valuable viewers’ votes. Performing in couples for the first time, the contest-

Match Of The Day Live – Cardiff City v Queens Park Rangers

Commentary comes from Steve Wilson and Mark Bright.

12.30pm BBC1

The truth about wife-beating Warren’s death finally comes to light and Polly’s attempts to help Hannah go disastrously wrong as the medical drama continues. Kirsty goes to the fire station where they have been posthumously honouring her late husband, Warren. But daughter Nita has scaled the fire tower with a bottle of vodka, distraught that she has got her dad so wrong: Nita thought he was a bad man, but everyone here thinks he was a hero. In flashback the violent history of the family’s relationship is

Dan Walker presents live coverage of the crucial Championship match, with Cardiff hoping to upset long-term leaders Queens Park Rangers. Neil Warnock’s Rangers beat Cardiff 2-1 at Loftus Road in November, thanks to a wonderful winner from the Championship’s Player of the Season, Adel Taarabt. Cardiff, who last played in the top flight almost 50 years ago, will take a big step towards the Premier League if they exact revenge this afternoon.

relived and Nita finally reveals the true circumstances surrounding her father’s death. It’s Polly’s last day as a paramedic and she attends a shout with Jeff – for disturbed former patient Hannah Fleet. Hannah has now scalded herself and insists on being treated by Dylan, much to his discomfort. Becoming increasingly obsessed with Dylan’s cavalier treatment of her, Hannah is determined to make him suffer as she has. With malicious intent she grabs a large pair of scissors, just as Polly runs to comfort her... Stephen Lord plays Warren, with Sophia di Martino as Polly, Beth Goddard as Hannah, Lucy Gaskell as Kirsty, Holly Earl as Nita, Matt Bardock as Jeff and William Beck as Dylan.

Live Easter Day Eucharist From Salisbury Cathedral 10.00pm BBC1 Easter Day’s live Choral Eucharist from Salisbury Cathedral is introduced by the Dean of Salisbury, the Very Rev June Osborne, who will also preach. The President is the Rt Rev Dr Christopher Herbert. The programme opens with the lighting of the Paschal Candle, symbolising

the Light of Christ, which will be lit from a bonfire outside the Cathedral just before dawn on Easter morning. The Eucharist begins with Charles Wood’s arrangement of the introit This Joyful Eastertide, sung by the Cathedral Choir, and the Mass Setting is Mozart’s Coronation

Mass. Director of Music David Halls conducts Salisbury Cathedral Choir, with both boy and girl choristers, and the organist is Daniel Cook. The congregation join in traditional Easter hymns, including Jesus Christ Is Risen Today and Thine Be The Glory.

9.00pm, BBC2 It’s 1956 and the country has found its first heartthrobs in Manchester United’s Busby Babes, a good-looking and talented team of young players who are the pride of Manchester, in Chris Chibnall’s authentic and moving account of this heartbreaking football tragedy. On the fringes is 19-year-old Bobby Charlton. Having trained at the club for three years, his dream is to play alongside his heroes. Guided by inspirational coach Jimmy Murphy, Bobby’s hard work pays off when boss Matt Busby gives him his firstteam debut. He scores two goals, despite an ankle injury. By early 1958, United are top of the league and have qualified for the European Cup quarter-finals in Belgrade. Forced by the Football League to be back

Page 26

in Manchester 24 hours before their next League fixture, Busby has to charter a special flight. Arctic weather closes in as the team travel back via Munich. Having aborted take-off twice, a third attempt is made. The plane never leaves the ground, crashing into a fuel dump. Eight of the team die as a result of their injuries, along with backroom staff, journalists and two of the plane’s crew. Back in Manchester, Murphy breaks the news to anxious relatives before flying to Munich to visit the injured team in hospital. Riddled with guilt about the decision to charter the plane, Busby remains in a critical condition. Facing the possibility that Manchester United might close, Jimmy pieces together a team to honour the club’s remaining fixtures. While Manchester mourns, Bobby returns home unsure

whether to play again. With Jimmy’s gentle words and inspired by a chance kickabout, he decides to return to Old Trafford to watch Murphy’s patched-up side. Led by Murphy, with Bobby back in the side and Busby’s return to the dressing room, United reach the FA Cup Final at Wembley. Though the final is lost, the spirit of the club lives on. Bobby Charlton is played by Jack O’Connell, Jimmy Murphy by David Tennant, Matt Busby by Dougray Scott, Duncan Edwards by Sam Claflin, Harry Gregg by Ben Peel, Eddie Coleman by Thomas Howes and Mark Jones by Philip Hill-Pearson United is one of a series of new dramas reflecting the major new investment for drama on BBC Two. This year marks the rebirth of drama on the channel with a range of truly original pieces that all signal this confident new direction.

THE ROYAL WEDDING When Royals Wed Easter Monday 25 to Thursday 28 April 9.00am, BBC1 Larry Lamb and Lesley Garrett present a history of royal weddings from Victorian times to present day, in When Royals Wed. This four-part, archive-rich, magazine series for BBC One Daytime explores the different elements of royal weddings from courtship and guest lists to the big day

field, and many have their sights firmly set on London 2012. Great Britain’s triple Badminton winner Pippa Funnell is among those competing, as is William Fox-Pitt, itself. Taking in two centuries of social history from 1840, when Queen Victoria’s nuptials distantly enthralled the nation, the series offers a view not just of royal marriages but also of the Britain they took place in. It shows how royal weddings have influenced other people’s special days; the personal stories of couples who married on the same day as royalty; how royal courtships developed; and the State’s role in arranging them on occasion. When Royals Wed is a fresh look at Britain’s past through the ever-present fascination with how and who Royals marry.

DIY enthusiasts are urged to stay safe Disaster area THE TOTAL cost of Britain’s botched DIY jobs comes to £2.1 billion a year, with almost a quarter of people seeing their home improvement plans go wrong. This is according to a survey conducted by myhammer.co.uk that revealed 42 per cent of individuals regretted not calling in a professional to do a job they took on themselves. John Russell, building expert on Channel 5’s reality show Cowboy Builders commented: “The consequences of getting DIY wrong can be catastrophic.

What may seem an achievable task can end up costing hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds to put right.” He highlighted some of the worst mistakes he had encountered, including a man who tried to pull down a chimney stack by tying it to his car and driving off. Mr Russell explained that while this may seem an extreme example, it demonstrates how people are often convinced they are doing the right thing, when in reality this may be far from the case. Recently, a survey conducted by Wickes revealed that nearly half of DIYers are forced to call in a tradesman to finish the job, at an average cost of nearly £250.

EASTER traditionally marks the beginning of DIY season - and keen gardeners will also be out in force, so RoSPA is urging people to stay safe, inside and out. It is estimated that each year, more than 200,000 people go to A&E in the UK after being injured during DIY,

maintenance or gardening at home. And, in England in 2009/10, there were 4,347 admissions to hospital after accidents involving contact with non-powered hand tools, 460 after contact with powered lawnmowers and 3,415 after contact with other powered hand tools and household machinery. Some of these accidents will have happened at work but many of them will have happened at home. Among those injured in 2009/10 were more than 400 children aged under 15. RoSPA urges those doing DIY to remember to tidy up straight after a job is done children find tools and gadgets fascinating, and many injuries occur when a task is

complete, but not tidied away. Sheila Merrill, RoSPA’s public safety adviser, said: “Overambition and lack of knowledge are among the main causes of DIY accidents, and we advise people to be honest about their abilities. Accidents happen more easily when you are unprepared and in a rush, so think through the tasks you intend to do before you start work. “Tackling a job that is too difficult could not only result in an injury, but could also mean you have to pay a tradesperson to rectify an unsuccessful attempt - turning your efforts to save money into an expensive and perhaps painful - mistake.” Other DIY and gardening

safety tips include: stop and disconnect all electrical appliances and tools before repairing / cleaning them; only use tools / materials / products in accordance with their instructions; when working with power tools, use an RCD (residual current device) if your home is not already wired with one; avoid falls from height by checking a ladder’s condition before use; keep children and pets away from where you are working; keep products in their original containers; keep all tools, paint and chemicals out of the reach of children; and, tidy up at the end of your task. Unseen sales ACCORDING to the Spanish press there is a new property market springing up – bargains

Page 38

real estate being sold as bank repossessions, but the lender, in this case the banks, have no keys!

They’re being termed – invisible sales. The banks and savings banks are now reported to be selling off such property cheap, but ‘sight unseen’, with purchasers not being able to even inspect the property. That requirement is compensated for by even lower prices. However purchasers under such circumstances may have problems, the previous owner could take more than a year to be evicted in some circumstances, and there is also the danger that the current occupant of the property has signed a rental agreement. The banks, in desperate need for cash, are selling the apartments which judicially belong to them, but for which they do not have the keys. Buyers market for bargain apartments seem now the trend.

Women are better Inspiration in the flower beds in Florence IF YOU’RE looking for a little inspiration then why not watch Monty Don’s Italian Gardens, tonight (Friday) at 9pm.

After stunning us with the verdant formality of Rome’s Renaissance gardens, Monty Don now whisks us off to some gardens in Florence where the holy trinity of balance, order and harmony is still visible but softened with flowers. Even so it’s not the flora that makes the palatial Giardino di Boboli so spec-

tacular. It’s the fantastic grottos decorated with Michelangelo sculptures and the mathematically designed parterres studded with orange trees. Equally amazing is the Medici’s private entrance to the place - a kilometre-long covered walkway built on top of the Ponte Vecchio shops and lined with self-portraits by the likes of Rembrandt. It’s impossible not to warm to this sun-drenched stroll around Tuscany in the company of Monty, who’s a charmingly battered travelling companion.

Basil and parsley are really simple to grow

IT’S human nature that us men consider the potting shed and the greenhouse as our refuge from domestic life. But for the best beds, borders and baskets, it seems, they should hand the gardening gloves to women. They are supposedly better at choosing, arranging and tending to flowers, planting

hanging baskets and selecting garden ornaments, according to a survey conducted by Roundup Weedkiller. Men, on the other hand, are more adept at cutting the grass, tending to the vegetable patch and looking after the decking. In a poll featuring 2,000 participants, both sexes also rated men as better at building sheds and painting fences.

Gary Philpotts from Roundup Weedkiller, said: “Traditionally, the garden has been thought of as the man’s responsibility. But it seems that many now believe women are the best at making sure the lawn and flower-beds look nice. “However, men haven’t been completely pushed out of the garden because it seems to be their job to prepare the garden, as well as tackling the bigger jobs such

as maintaining the fences and decking.” The survey revealed that gardening jobs tend to be divided between men and women, with men doing more physical work, such as digging beds and taking rubbish to the tip. On the other hand, women are able to express their creativity more, and they are likely to be the ones choosing plants and arranging flower-beds.

Budget garden products MANY people who are looking to make the most of their gardens this year will be seeking out bargains as the current economic climate leads individuals towards low cost garden accessories and plants, it has been claimed. According to Graham Clarke

from Amateur Gardening magazine, many of us will steer clear of high-end garden products and look for value items such as bedding plants and seedlings. With research from Myhammer finding that a third of people will be looking to overhaul their

22 April 2011 - 28 April 2011

garden this year, the expert suggested many individuals will be on the lookout for discounts and multi-buy deals on their greenery. He noted that bright flowers are likely to be popular as gardeners want something that can cheer them up, adding: “The mes-

sage is that people are watching their pennies a bit more but they also want lots of colour.” According to research from Roundup, will spend an average of nine hours a month in the summer on ensuring their outdoor spaces are kept in pristine condition.

HERBS are so easy to grow, indoors or outside, and especially here in Tenerife, with our climate producing the perfect conditions. The great thing about herbs is that they are so easy to produce, with little effort required, and there is nothing so rewarding as picking your own herbs at home Take basil, for example. There are many types of this herb, but the main choice among gardeners, or do-ityourself mums, is the common sweet basil, which can be sown in pots or seed trays. Sow the seeds 0-5cm deep in small pots of compost and place in a warm spot, which can be virtually anywhere over here. The seedlings will appear in

a week or two, but let them grow in a slighter cooler place until established. Basil enjoys rich, fertile soil, to be found at garden centres, and quickly flourishes. Parsley is another great favourite of mine, and I prefer the flat-leaf variety, which is a superb, all-round herb and has more flavour than the curly type. You can keep up the supply of young, fresh leaves by making continual sowings (in warm soil). Sow the seeds 1.5cm deep in well-prepared, well-watered soil. You will see the seedlings within three weeks, and then thin them until 20cm apart and water well. Parsley is a biennial, producing seeds and not leaves in its second year. To prolong its life, cut close to its base with a sharp knife after a month or so (up to four times) and it will produce fresh leaves.

CARL PATTISON from Robot, answers your hair questions

Intensive care treatments! A FEW weeks ago, we touched on which shampoos and conditioners were best for your hair, not only should you care for your hair with these basic products, but there is also the “aftercare” you need to think about too. Aftercare is the final stage of your hair-care regime, and it should never be omitted from your everyday routine. These products come in varying forms. from creams, sprays, serums and oils. They are used to seal your hair after-cleansing and conditioning and it’s like your suntan creams - they form a barrier to replenish and protect. Styling creams are used to control and give smoothness to your hair. They are normally very light in texture and never make your hair greasy. Apply small quantities to damp hair, comb through and style as usual. But try not to rub into the scalp as it can make your hair flat. Sprays are used to lock-in moisture and give protection against any form of heat, from the hairdryer to tongs and hair-irons. Again, apply to damp hair before styling, then to each section if you’re going to use an electric device. Once finished, a light mist over the entire head keeps out the moisture in the air, and thus makes your style last longer. Serums are more for use on very frizzy or dry hair. Apply a small amount (about the size

of a five-cent coin) to wet hair, smooth through with your palms, then comb with a wide tooth-comb. Style as usual, then apply another amount (about a one-cent drop) over dry hair, trying not to touch the roots as this product can be a little bit greasy. Oils aren’t like serums; they are normally are a “dry oil”, which disappears completely into the hair. They usually do the work of all of the last few products - protecting, sealing, and replenishing the hair with lost nutrients. I’m currently using what I consider to be the best product I’ve ever come across in 30 years. It’s called Moroccanoil, which sounds as though it’s greasy but isn’t. It literally starts to work the minute you put it on. Customers say it stops their colours fading, which is especially good if you are living here. When you use it (always first on wet hair), it makes

any type of hair instantly feel 100% better. It gives you protection against heat and also from the sunrays, calming frizz and giving the hair a fantastic gloss. I normally, use a five-cent size amount on soaking wet hair, then a one-cent size on dry hair, depending on the length and damage to the hair. I could go on about this product all day, but you have to try it yourself to believe it! I don’t have to sell it in the salon because it sells itself and now comes with a shampoo and a hair masque, both of which are as equally good as the oil. Whichever method of hair protection you use, make sure you use some. It would stop some of the damage I see in the salon, literally every day. Don’t leave it until your stylist is raising an eyebrow or tutting, to decide, “Right, I’m going to do something now.” Use them before it’s too late!

Dear Christine, My wife and I have lived in Tenerife for six months, and I thought we were happy here. But she dropped a bombshell a couple of weeks ago when she said she desperately misses our family in the UK and wants us to go back. I love it here and would hate to go back, and I told her so. Now she’s barely speaking to me. What do you suggest I do? Bob

You’ve found yourself in a common situation. Lots of people move overseas and not all of them settle. However, as six months is a short length of time on which to base such a massive decision, I suggest that you ask her very calmly to give it another six months. If you avoid putting pressure on her, the extra time may make all the difference to the way she sees things. In the meantime, tell your family members how much they are being missed and encourage them to visit and get in touch as much as possible. It might be a useful exercise for you and your wife to each make a list of pros and cons of living in Tenerife, versus the pros and cons of living in the UK. This might indicate to her that she’s actually getting a lot more out of life here than she realised. On the other hand, it may show you that there was more for you in the UK than you realised! If, after six months, your wife is still as desperate to return, I’m afraid you may have to decide which means more to you - your relationship, or your life in Tenerife. All the best, Christine.

Dear Christine, I hate doing this, but I’m stuck as to what else to do. You see, a friend of mine smells really badly of BO. She hangs around me a lot and nobody else wants to come near. They all laugh at her behind her back, which I think is mean. She doesn’t understand why people try to keep away from her, and I daren’t hurt her feelings by being honest. Please help because I really can’t stand the smell any more. TM

Oh dear, I can understand your dilemma. Telling your friend about her problem will obviously hurt her. But wouldn’t not telling her be even meaner? I think so, especially when everything’s taken into account, such as her lack of friends, the way people laugh at her and so on. You don’t need to be unkind about it, though. Get her somewhere quiet and say something like: “I’m so sorry to be the one to tell you, but I like you and it’s something that will help you, so please forgive me. I’m afraid you have a problem with body odour.” She may react angrily, or she may cry or sulk. However, if you don’t tell her, she’ll carry on trying to be close to you and feeling rejected when you move away. If she does ask you for advice, you can recommend a daily bath and hair-wash, plus deodorant and clean clothes every day. But you’ll need to make sure you’re very clean and fresh yourself when you tell her! I know it’ll be embarrassing for you both, but if you’re truly her friend, you’ll want to help her. Good luck. Christine

Dear Christine I’m a 43-year-old single female and have trouble with alcohol. I don’t drink every day, but when I do, I don’t know when to stop and then make a show of myself. For days after I feel guilty and ashamed. I’ve got myself into lots of bad situations and worry that I could put myself in real danger one day. I’m feeling paranoid about what people think of me, too, like I want to hide and never come back. I’ve been like this for years and it feels like I have no control. Please can you help? ‘Lisa’

Well done for recognising that you have a problem. It’s the first step to regaining control of your life. Even though you don’t drink every day, you’ve been drinking to the point where it affects your mood, your selfworth and your behaviour. You’ve even put yourself in harm’s way. By some definitions, that counts as alcoholism. It’s certainly binge drinking, and that carries serious health risks. Some people know when to stop, but alcohol wipes out adult good sense and gives Dutch courage, so it can be hard to take control of your drinking. I strongly recommend that you contact the South Tenerife Christian Fellowship in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos (922 729 907), to find out when they have their Alcoholics Anonymous group, then please attend it. Or you could talk to your doctor. The sooner you act, the sooner you’ll find confidence. I wish you the courage to obtain and use the help you badly need. Christine

Christine Craggs-Hinton is the author of 18 self-help books, including ‘Natural Treatments for Arthritis’, ‘How to Lower your Blood Pressure’ and ‘Living with Fibromyalgia’. Her books are available from all good UK bookshops as well as ‘The Paper Shop’, Apolo Centre and ‘Bookswop’, Edificio Cristianos 1, both of which are in Los Cristianos.

VAL SAINSBURY Keeping her finger on the pulse Email: val.sainsbury@canarianweekly.com

The expanding children! THE waistlines of girls starting secondary school are more than 8cm larger than those of their counterparts 30 years ago.

And their male classmates have waistlines nearly 7cm bigger and chests nearly 8cm wider than 11-year-old boys three decades ago, according to Shape GB’s National Childrenswear Survey. The part-publicly-funded survey is based on data from more than 2,500 children, aged four to 17, who were measured with 3D body scanners in 2009-10. The results show how children’s body shapes have ballooned since the last major survey, which was released by the British Standards Institute in 1990 and based on measurements taken from more than 8,300 children in 1978. An average 11-year-old girl today is 148.78cm tall, compared with 146.03cm in 1978 - an increase of 2.75cm, or 1.88%. But her waistline is on average 70.2cm, the Shape GB survey found, compared with 59.96cm in 1978. Because the 3D scanner does not compress the skin like a tape measure does, and the scanner also measures the small of the back, it produces width measurements around 1.9cm larger than a tape measure.

But even accounting for that difference, the average 11-year-old girl’s waist has increased by 8.34cm or 13.9%. The results put her hip measurement at 81.78cm, compared with 77.81cm in 1978, and chest at 78.4cm, compared with 71.31cm then. The average boy of 11 now stands 148.18cm tall, up from 144.63cm in 1978 - a 3.55cm or 2.45% increase. His chest is 78.45cm, compared with 68.76 in the old survey. When the differences in measuring method are accounted for there, is still a 7.79cm, or 11.33% increase. The boy’s waist has also expanded, from 61.49cm on

the average 1978 boy to 70.02cm today, and his hips are 80.21cm, compared with 73.22cm then. Select Research, the company managing the survey, said the scans, which recorded nearly 200 different measurements per child, also showed that the body shapes of boys and girls differed before the age of seven, contrary to the assumptions of several retailers. They said that many clothes currently labelled for fiveyear-old boys were based on them being 110cm tall, while the data shows the average as 115cm.

Now we are informed that fatty foods could shield heart attacks BINGEING on fatty food may protect the victims of heart attacks, which will come as a huge surprise to many doctors. The surprising findings of a recent US study show that a short, saturated-fat “splurge” can actually reduce damage to the heart. However, scientists who conducted the research using mice are still trying to explain the effect. But they believe it could have important implications for human health, possibly leading to a way to “pre-

treat” people at high risk of heart attacks. Previous studies have found that certain patients with high cholesterol levels are more likely to survive heart attacks than those with lower levels. Yet the idea that fatty food can reduce injury from heart attacks is completely at odds with general thinking about diet and heart health. Diets laden with saturated fat are one of the main riskfactors for high levels of artery-clogging cholesterol and heart disease. Searching for answers, the American scientists spent six weeks feeding mice a diet in

22 April 2011 - 28 April 2011

which 60% of calories were derived from saturated fat. Another group of mice were fed the same diet for two weeks or less, and a third received a normal grain and vegetable-based diet. Heart attacks were then artificially induced in all the mice. Animals fed a high-fat diet for just 24 hours and then returned to a normal diet a day before a heart attack experienced “prolonged” protection against injury. The findings were presented at the 2011 Experimental Biology meeting in Washington DC.

If you want to be really happy, switch off those mobile phones IF you want to be happy, then think positive and take a break from your mobile phone. That’s the advice from a new global movement for happiness, whose members include the Dalai Lama. Action for Happiness, set up last year and launched officially in London this week, says it rejects individualism and the pursuit of material wealth, and provides alternative practical tips for a happier life. The movement, co-founded by Richard Layard, an economics professor at the London School of Economics and an expert on happiness, is supported by more than 4,500 individual members from 68 countries. In support of its argument, the group said surveys of Britons and Americans show that they are no more content now than in the Fifties, despite substantial economic progress. “The main external factor affecting a person’s happiness is the quality of his/her relationships, at home, at work and in the community,” reads a statement from the group. “And the main internal factor is the underlying mental health.” Its recommendations on how to stay in high spirits include advice to help others, exercise and pursue goals, and less obvious tips, such as meditating and taking a break from the mobile phone and the internet. Oh yes, and organising a street party, which is pretty topical considering the forthcoming Royal nuptials, Governments are becoming increasingly concerned with assessing national well-being using data outside traditional economic measures to help mould policy. Britain will soon start asking new questions in its regular household survey to establish how satisfied people are with their lives. France has asked Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, a former World Bank chief economist, and a group of international experts, to find new ways to measure economic progress, taking into account social well-being.

For a perfect snack with tea or coffee, Garibaldi really does take the biscuit THE Garibaldi biscuit, a favourite with young and old at any time of the year, consists of currants in a plain biscuit, best enjoyed with tea or coffee. They are also called “deadfly” biscuits, because the currants resemble dead flies. This all-time favourite is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, a great Italian general and leader in the fight to unify Italy. It was invented by John Carr, and first manufactured by Peek Freans in 1861 after Garibaldi visited England. Among biscuit manufacturers, Carr is regarded as a demi-god because he was the first person to succeed in making an industrial biscuit which was not tooth-shatteringly hard. He was one of the great biscuit-making Carrs of Scotland (of water-biscuit fame), but he abandoned the family business to work for Peek Frean in Bermondsey. Carr’s first great biscuit, the Pearl - a crumbly plain thing, probably similar to a rich tea and launched in 1860 - has not survived. That makes it all the more amazing that the Garibaldi has, and remains so popular. It has the dry, dusty taste of Victoriana and was first sold in

1861, and these curranty rectangles are still sold in every supermarket. One thing you wouldn’t expect to do with Garibaldis is make them yourself because they have been factory-produced from the start. Yet it is possible to replicate these rectangular slices which are irresistible to most discerning biscuit-lovers. Garibaldi biscuits Ingredients 100g/3½oz butter, melted in a saucepan 100g/3½oz icing sugar, sifted 100g/3½oz plain flour 100g/3½oz egg whites 200g/7oz currants Method Mix together the butter, icing sugar and flour until smooth. Slowly add the egg whites, stirring, until they are completely incorporated, then fold in the currants. The dough will be quite wet. Place in a small bowl and chill for at least one hour. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper, and spread the mixture out. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Bake the biscuits for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. While soft, cut into slices with a sharp knife. Leave to cool, and then keep in an airtight tin until ready to dish out.

Simnel Cake, so fruity …and so easy to bake BY now, the kids will probably have tucked in to the odd Easter Egg, and you can be sure there will be plenty more scoffing by them come Easter Sunday. That’s when the traditional chocolate eggs will be in abundance in most family homes, along with many other favourites at this special Bank Holiday. It is actually one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar, celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ following His Good Friday Crucifixion today and His Ascension into heaven. The Easter holiday period is also a time for other celebrations, as all the mums can vouch for after spending even more than time than usual in the kitchen. Many of them will almost certainly be baking traditional Easter fare in the shape of a Simnel Cake, packed with fruit, spices and marzipan. So why not try making your own version of this classic recipe?

Ingredients for Simnel Cake (For the almond paste) 250g/9oz caster sugar 250g/9oz ground almonds 2 free-range eggs, beaten 1 tsp almond essence (For the cake) 175g/6oz butter or margarine 175g/6oz soft brown sugar 3 free-range eggs, beaten 175g/6oz plain flour Pinch salt ½ tsp ground mixed spice (optional) 350g/12oz mixed raisins, currants and sultanas 55g/2oz chopped mixed peel ½ lemon, grated zest only 1-2 tbsp apricot jam 1 free-range egg, beaten for glazing Preparation For the almond paste, place the sugar and ground

almonds in a bowl. Add enough beaten egg and mix to a fairly soft consistency Add the almond essence and knead for one minute until the paste is smooth and pliable. Roll out a third of the almond paste to make a circle 18cm/7ins in diameter and reserve the remainder for the cake topping Preheat oven to 140C/275F/Gas Grease and line an 18cm/7in cake tin For the cake, cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs until well incorporated, and then sift in the flour, salt and mixed spice (if using) a little at a time. Finally, add the mixed dried fruit, peel and grated lemon zest

and stir into the mixture. Put half the mixture into the cake tin. Smooth the top and cover with the circle of almond paste. Add the rest of the cake mixture and smooth the top, leaving a slight dip in the centre to allow for the cake to rise. Bake in the preheated oven for 1¾ hours. Test by inserting a skewer in the middle, and if it comes out clean it’s ready. Once baked, remove from the oven and set aside to cool on a wire rack. Brush the top of the cooled cake with the apricot jam. Divide the remainder of the almond paste in half; roll out a circle to cover the top of the cake with one half and form 11 small balls with the other half. Place the circle of paste on the jam glaze and set the balls round the edge. Brush the cake topping with a little beaten egg. Preheat the grill to high. Place the cake on to a baking tray and grill for 1-2 minutes, or until the top of the marzipan begins to brown. Alternatively, lightly heat the cake topping using a cook’s blow torch, until the marzipan is golden-brown.

Children swoop on Bird’s Nest treat ALL youngsters love to “work” in the kitchen with their mums, but they are generally in the way. Not this time, though, because we have the perfect job for them: helping mum to make this Easter Egg Bird Nest, which is simple, easy and fun! Ingredients 200g or 1 cup milk-chocolate chips, or broken chunks of chocolate 100g or 1 cup dark-chocolate chips, or broken chunks of chocolate 50g or half-cup butter 2 tbsp runny honey 100g or 4 cups of cornflakes Cooking Melt the butter and honey in a large pan over low heat Remove from stove top, add in chocolate and stir

Page 42

Have the children slowly add in the cornflakes until they are fully coated Next, have the children spoon the mixture into cupcake liners and add three little chocolate mini-eggs into each nest and chill Then it’s time for a child’s taste test

The Cave, Los Abrigos Restaurant Review IT’S always wonderful to enjoy an evening at a newly-opened restaurant, especially if the owners are trying to do things differently. And whether it be with a unique menu or outstanding decor, I can honestly say that at The Cave, in Los Abrigos, they have achieved both. With just a sign and a menu outside, it would be easy to miss this well-thought-out dining experience, but a whole new world awaits as you walk down the stairs. The first thing you notice is the glorious, panoramic view of the Atlantic, just screaming out for a sunset, and the sound of the waves lapping at the shore. A stress-reliever if ever there was one. We were then greeted by Blanche, our waitress, and asked if we would like to sit downstairs to choose from the menu, which is when we found out where the name came from. When we turn the corner of the stairs, a rugged, beautifully-lit smugglers’ cave opened up before our eyes. As I said before, a true experience. Having decided on our food, with Blanch ready to explain any dish or sauce, we moved to the restaurant and sat at a rather unusual table: an old corn millstone, set into beautiful hard wood, under-lit and covered in glass. A real talking point. That was until the first course arrived, and the conversation promptly stopped as it was food o’clock. I went for Ribs in Honey and Mustard. It was a huge portion and so succulent and tender. My partner opted for Mushrooms, stuffed with Peppers and Goat’s Cheese. They were two superb dishes and each had been given its own individual stamp by chef and co-owner Ross. So, with another glass of excellent house wine in our hands (we had a choice of three, which again is a very different slant on the norm), we settled down to the second course. I chose beautifully-cooked Pork Medallions on a bed of Herbed Potatoes in a rich, creamy white sauce, with an accompaniment of fresh, crisp vegetables (what does he put in the red cabbage?). My partner went for the Delice of Salmon with Crab Meat, topped with Grilled Asparagus in a thermidor sauce, which looked and,

22 April 2011 - 28 April 2011

apparently, tasted exquisite, I’m not a fishy person (no laughing please) and, as Ross pointed out, they have a menu which caters for all tastes in an area known primarily for seafood restaurants. So for all tastes and also very much for vegetarians, a superb selection of dishes are available. The Cave really is the place for stunningly-presented, varied and flavoursome dining. Dessert was then the order of the day: a delicious, Pear Tarte that just melted in the mouth. It was served with two spoons, as one pudding between us was all we could manage, then coffees and a chat with Ross. Turns out that this man has done the rounds as a chef, working all over the world, literally, as he did stint on cruiseliners before plying his trade in America. He is a passionate man when it comes to his work, designing the menu with all tastes in mind, and especially the vegetarian choices. His restaurant partner, Martin, has been a vegetarian for many years and wanted to provide a selection of unusual dishes, and every one of them sounds superb, even for a meatasaurus like me. The Cave has become an instant success for Ross and Martin and, with more and more people discovering this gem of an establishment, it would be wise to book in advance. And to Ross, Anna (his better half), Blanche and Martin, who we have yet to meet as he also owns a hotel in Blackpool, thanks for an unforgettable evening, and all the best for the future.

Margate’s Beano trips could well be returning MARGATE was, until recently, a typical British rundown seaside resort, with boarded-up shop windows and little to entice holiday-makers. In the Sixties and Seventies, workers used to go there, and to neighbouring Ramsgate for their firm’s annual coach outing on a summer’s day. They were known as Beanos, and great fun they were, as you donned silly, Kiss-MeQuick hats, swigged beer all day, enjoyed all the fun to be had at Dreamland amusement park (now just a bleak skeleton on the landscape, but soon to be revived) and seldom remembered getting the coach back that night. And for weeks after, you and your fellow Beano trippers regaled those workmates who couldn’t make it (or were banned by the wife after the previous year’s disgraceful homecoming) with wild tales of a wild day out at the seaside. Oh, the nostalgia. Those were the days. But today, Margate has a brand-new image in the shape of the Turner Contemporary art centre, which was opened last

Page 44

Thursday to a great fanfare by Tracey Emin, its most renowned lady and an artist of some note. If the hype is to be believed, the ambitious art centre will be the rebirth of Margate, following in the footsteps of the rejuvenated Old Town, with its thriving community of independent shops. They all seem to specialise in vintage and retro homeware and clothing, art galleries and cafés, many of which have opened in the past 12 months, although much of the town centre, like so many in these austere times, is given over to Poundland and a variety of charity shops. But over-riding all this, perched jauntily on the harbour, looking out to sea, is the angular, glass-clad, £17 million art centre upon which so many people in the diminishing tourist sector there, especially, are depending for their very existence. The hope is that The Shed, as it is nicknamed by locals, will do for the Kent seaside town’s fortunes what the Tate did for St Ives in Cornwall and the Guggenheim for Bilbao. For a building that carries such a weight of expectations, though, it seems remarkably low-key, and even functional, likened by one local trader to “a

fish processing plant”. The gallery is actually built on the exact site of the guesthouse where the artist, JMW Turner used to stay on his regular visits to Margate. Some of Turner’s most famous works were inspired by Thanet, the coastal area which comprises Margate and the neighbouring resorts of Broadstairs and Ramsgate. But only one of his paintings is on show in the opening exhibition, which is a collection of contemporary works, loosely inspired by the artist. Some shopkeepers in the Old Town said that the “Turner effect” was a major factor in their decision to set up shop there. And its first year, the Turner Contemporary is expected to bring 150,000 visitors to Margate. One trader there said: “If someone had said a couple of years ago that I would be moving back to Margate, I’d have said they were crazy. But I’ve noticed a change in the town. There’s a real buzz about the place now.” True, it is a long way from the popular image of Margate as a seedy, neglected town that holidays forgot. Yet just a minute’s walk from the Old Town and you are back on the seafront, which, sadly, turns the clock back to those dingy

times. Yet there are plans to reopen Dreamland, which closed in 2005, as a heritage theme park. In the Nineties, this was one of the country’s most popular attractions, pulling in two million visitors a year. The centrepiece of the new park, which is expected to open in 2013, will be the restored Scenic Railway, the oldest roller-coaster in Britain, which will be joined by vintage rides and amusements such as a Pinball Parlour, roller disco and a Fifties-style milk bar. Work has already started on the Thirties Dreamland Cinema, which will house a new entertainment venue and an exhibition on the popular culture of the British seaside. Margate was one of Britain’s earliest seaside resorts - now less 90 minutes from London by car - and there still exist reminders of its heyday, from the grand Georgian terraces to the stone pier, built for the steam packets which brought Londoners in their thousands to try the fashionable new pastime of sea bathing. On the seafront at Cliftonville, once considered the posh part of town, stands the Walpole Bay Hotel, a gloriously eccentric remnant from the Edwardian era and serving cream teas on an Art Deco

veranda overlooking the bowling green. There are B and Bs galore still, all hoping to cash in on the new, trendy Margate that has long since enjoyed the good times. And there is still plenty to love about Margate, immortalised in Only Fools and Horses by Del Boy’s Jolly Boys Outing by coach to the seaside town. The Turner Contemporary will bring some much-needed publicity to the town and, if successful, the Dreamland heritage park will introduce a new

generation to the simple pleasures of ghost trains, candyfloss and penny arcades. It seems fitting that the blend of seaside kitsch and kiss-me-quick fun that saw Margate fall so spectacularly out of fashion could yet be its salvation. It certainly won’t be first on your list of holiday places to visit. But it might just capture your imagination if you’ve gone back to the UK to see the family and friends, and are stuck for something different to do to round off the trip in the last week or so.

Surfing so expensive SURFING the web up to 1,000 times more expensive abroad, warns Which? Using tablet devices such as iPads while travelling overseas, can be as much as 1,000 times more costly than in the UK, warns Which? Data use such as checking emails, watching videos and downloading music on a tablet device can cost as little as £7.50 a month in the UK for a GB of data, but the consumer champion has found that equivalent use could cost Britons travelling abroad several thousand pounds. It would take several hours of watching video online to run up such astronomical charges, but simply using GPS to get around, browsing the internet, or checking emails could lead to a bill of several hundred pounds. What’s more, smart phone and tablet users could find their devices racking up big bills without them knowing it as they access the net to carry out automatic updates. Although data charges are limited to around £40 in the EU due to an automatic billcut off required by EC regulation, and some operators have caps for use further afield, others don’t have a limit on how big a bill a customer can rack up. Which? found that using

your mobile phone to make and receive calls, send texts and browse the web while abroad can be extremely costly too. Unlike within the UK, mobile users must pay to receive calls as well as to make them. Prices are capped in the EU, but calls made elsewhere can be up to 10 times more expensive and texts can be four times more expensive. Regular phone use on a two week holiday that would cost less than £40 in France would cost up to £190 in the US - and around £300 from Russia. Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, says: “The cost of using a mobile in the EU has dropped significantly in recent years, but travel further afield and you could be facing a huge bill for making a few calls to stay in touch with friends and family. “If you’re a frequent traveller, you may be able to save money by buying an upgrade from your operator that offers reduced international call costs, or if you spend a lot of time in one country, it may be worth getting a local pay-as-yougo Sim card. “Until data costs come down, anyone considering their tablet or mobile for using the net abroad should steer well clear of 3G data roaming and use free wi-fi access where available instead.”

ened approach to solving problems and it will pay off.

(April 21st - May 21st)

C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) You’re torn between work and home issues this week, and you’ll find it hard to figure out which to focus on first. The weekend brings a welcome ease to the proceedings, and solutions will start to come at you thick and fast. Welcome them in with open arms.

The sun moved into your sign on Wednesday and brought a more grounded, stabilising influence to your dealings, and when Venus moved into Aries on Thursday, wishful thinking over an old relationship may well have thrown you off course. But you’ve come this far so don’t let it. Be strong. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) Recent happenings in both work and play have proved to you that you can no longer wing it in the hope of getting what you want. Putting your nose to the grindstone and working hard is the only way to reach your goals, so make a plan, stick to it and forget socialising for a little while. CANCER (June 22ndJuly 23rd) Slow and steady wins the race, remember, whether it’s about achieving work goals or taking your emotional life to the next level. But don’t be tempted to take short-cuts, no matter how appealing they look. They don’t work and could even jeopardise your progress so far. Proceed with caution. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) Unable to see eye to eye with a partner or workmate? Then take a deep breath this week, see things from both sides and agree to disagree until you can find a better solution which suits both. Got time for a short break away? Time to peruse those travel brochures. VIRGO (August 24thSeptember 23rd) Make sure you’ve done as much preparation as you’re able

to over projects you want to introduce, as others are just waiting to pick holes in your suggestions. Someone new in your circle seems overly flirty and familiar- and you’ll enjoy the attention. But make sure you’re not playing with fire. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) If you feel others are hindering your progress, don’t be tempted to retaliate with anger or accusations. Sweet-talk them into seeing your proposals from a different angle. You’ll get more with honey than with vinegar, remember. Emotional communications blossom and grow. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) The moon in your sign makes you more sensitive than usual and recent frustrations and restrictions will seem insurmountable. They’re not. It’s just your mindset. Try to realise partners and friends are as supportive as they’ve always been, and are always there for you. Hang on in there. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) In order to avoid recent clashes escalating out of control, focus on the basic necessities of life, because taking a practical slant should ensure things run more smoothly. You will be inspired to take a more spiritual and enlight-

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) Make family a priority this week and try to appreciate all the intricate workings of a situation. Could someone be too proud to ask you for help? You don’t like to be intrusive, but it may be necessary in this case. Be gentle in your probing and don’t overstep the mark. Let him/her speak first. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Ongoing financial problems are causing stress and anxiety, but there’s no point just sitting and wringing your hands in despair, so to speak. You need to take action. Seek out a new perspective, and then take steps to act upon it. Revamping your budget drastically is the best way to go, starting with cutting back on nonessentials. ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) The only way to get past the tense undercurrents in communications at work is to stop, think and work out a constructive way of moving forward, in order to reach collective goals. You may also want to consider new ways to reignite the sparks of passion in your relationship, too.

Ruby Roller is MINI luxury with a Black an £850,000 gem! maximum price tag A CUSTOM-MADE Rolls-Royce, complete with gull-wing doors and DVD players, has gone on sale – for an astonishing £850,000.

MINI have teamed up with BMW Group partner Rolls-Royce to create a lavish, special edition machine, which is called MINI Inspired by Goodwood. It will be limited to 1,000 models worldwide, and could command a price tag of up to £50,000! Both the interior and exterior have been designed by the RR development centre at their Goodwood headquarters. Rolls Royce say they created “another layer to the MINI brand experience, with a generous dose of automotive luxury and exclusivity in its highest form”. As the first premium luxury model in the small-car segment, argues MINI (the new MINI was launched back in 2001), it’s only natural for the brand to establish its position further. But I can’t help wondering whether the imminent arrival of the Aston Martin Cygnet has anything to do with it. Aston Martin are really going to town with the super-luxury, city-car appeal of the Cygnet, and MINI may sense a threat to some of their extremely wellheeled customers, who adore their classless appeal. So the MINI Inspired by Goodwood is, therefore, their super-expensive answer. Premium-price MINIs are not without precedent, either. The original Mini has a long history of being fitted out by premium London tailors, with sales in the Sixties to stars such as Peter Sellers and The Beatles. This latest MINI carries on that tradition, but with a sophisticated new twist that maximises the brand link between BMW, MINI and RollsRoyce. It will certainly be faster than the Aston Martin Cygnet,

because MINI have fitted the 184hp 1.6-litre turbo from the MINI Cooper S, ensuring a rapid 0-60mph in seven seconds. It can also average 48.7mpg, and emits 136g/km CO2, which makes it the “greenest” RollsRoyce of all! The company’s interior designer, Alan Sheppard, oversaw the design of this luxury MINI, with the intention of introducing Rolls-Royce materials and workmanship to the small-car sector. The main focus has been inside. The overall interior colour scheme is Rolls-Royce Corn Silk, which covers the instrument panel, centre console, carpets, seats, roof lining and doors. Only the top of the dash, finished in soft full-grain leather, is black (presumably to stop reflections in the windscreen). Rolls-Royce grade lounge leather seats are fitted, in the same corn silk colour as the rest of the interior. A headline of the interior is the walnut burr finish to the instrument panel and door pulls. This is exclusive to RollsRoyce, and the real wood trim is extremely deep, rich and high-quality. Details even extend to the car having exactly the same

22 April 2011 - 28 April 2011

typeface for the instrument dials as the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Rolls-Royce Ghost. Another RR characteristic is the deep-wool fleece carpet mats, which are the same grade of floor mats fitted to other Rollers. The front and rear aprons are the pumped-up items fitted to the MINI Cooper S. However, this MINI is fitted with the bonnet from the MINI Cooper D, creating a smoother and more Rolls-Royce-like profile. Multispoke 17-inch alloys are also fitted, and there’s a tiny Inspired by Goodwood badge in the regular MINI spot on the front A-pillar wing. And the centre console carries a special 1 of 1,000 plaque. Given the luxury features and high-quality specification of

the MINI Inspired by Goodwood, the probable £50,000 price tag does not seem unreasonable - as long as you’re rolling in it!

Buyers will be intrigued to hear about the souped-up Black Ruby, which was commissioned by an Indian Maharajah. The owner designed many of the bespoke features, which were customised from a fourseater Phantom DC Concept in 2005. The incredible machine, finished in red leather worth £25,000, comprises £60,000 Ferrari-like gull-wing doors, £15,000 22-inch alloy wheels and a walnut dashboard that alone costs almost the equivalent of a new Toyota Yaris. The one-off motor - partBatmobile, part-sports car can hit 130mph, even though it has spent its life in a garage.

But the Maharajah now wishes to flog it. He is said to be a car fanatic who enjoys a fleet of some 50 vehicles, and it is thought that he has probably owned every single type of car ever made. Vaughan Davis, who owns the London-based boutique selling the car, said the Maharajah was a motor fanatic. He added: “It really is a piece of wonderment and, if you ever take it out for a drive, you just can’t get out because of all the people who gather around thinking you’re a celebrity.”

Tenerife are stunned by the Mighty Quini! Alcorcon 3 CD Tenerife 2 They say you get no luck when you are at the bottom. And often, you also get what you don’t deserve. This was tough on Tenerife. They worked hard, put in the effort and still came away with nothing. It was harsh very harsh. In last week’s Canarian Weekly, I hinted how, tactically, Alcorcon could be beaten. I’m guessing coach David Amaral took a copy to the mainland as he took my advice. He kept faith in Iriome alongside Nino, and the wide players gave them lots of ammunition. Twice Tenerife took the lead as both players notched. But I also warned of the dangers on hand from striker Quini. He duly bagged a brace as Alcorcon scored two late goals to break the visitors’ hearts. Quini himself told the press afterwards that it was a scrappy win. “We left it late and Tenerife played very well,” he said. “But we showed

Page 48

our character to grab the win. The play-offs are still possible.” They certainly are for Alcorcon, while Tenerife now have just eight matches to pull off the Great Escape. Fortunately, results went their way last week, so it’s pretty much as you were at the foot of the table. Tomorrow (Saturday), Villarreal B pitch up in Santa Cruz, and they have had a fine season. They made a really fast start and, though they have tailed off, they are safe for another season in the second tier of Spanish football. In fact, half-a-dozen of their players have tasted European football this season as Villarreal charged into the last four of the Europe League. But this should be a good time to face them. They have lost their last five matches, and took a beating at home by Cordoba last week. Tenerife could face former youngster Airam who, controversially, joined the visitors at the start of the season. He was a goal machine for the reserves, but was never given a chance to move out of the stiffs and into the full CDT squad. His frustration boiled over and when he was out of contract, he moved to the mainland. While he has hardly set the world alight, he has found his feet and has done okay. He will come up against former reserve team-mate Carlos Bellvis, who is having a good run at left-back and is looking forward to the match-up. “It will be nice to see him again,” said Bellvis. “But we have more important matters to worry about. We have to get the Alcorcon setback out our system. We played well but got no points. On Saturday, we must play well and get points.” Bellvis admitted the Alcorcon defeat was a major setback, saying: “I’ll be honest - it was deflating. The whole

team felt sick and annoyed. We know the fans are with us, so we will keep on battling.” Strong words. He is not the only one to come out with some fighting talk. Juanlu Hens is not the Roy Keane type, but at Tuesday’s press conference he was sounding almost Churchillian. “We are realistic,” he said. “We know we don’t have enough points, and the numbers and situation doesn’t lie. But we still have a chance. “If we win on Saturday, that will put our rivals under lots

of pressure. We still have a very good chance. We can do this.” Midfielder Julia Alvarez agrees. “It’s very simple,” he said. “If we win all our home matches, and then get a few points away, that might be enough. We are realistic and it is one game at a time. Three points on Saturday first, and then we focus on the next three points.” The match kicks off at 5pm tomorrow, and it seems as though the squad have developed a siege mentality. It could be tasty in Santa Cruz this weekend!

Toscales simply Super for Palms TOSCALES Old Boys have been in blistering form since Christmas, losing just once in 2011 en route to the cup final. And on Tuesday, they did a massive favour to their final rivals, Palms A, as they upset title-chasing Summerland Superstars. The leaders won the opening rubber, but were then blitzed as Toscales won six straight legs. Steve Wray was the hero, needing just four visits to win his three matches. Summerlands nicked a few dead rubbers but deserved their 7-3 defeat. It means the league is now Palms A’s to lose after another gutsy win for the Torviscans. They battled back from 2-0 down to win 6-4 against old rivals Tenerife Hammers A. Bungalow celebrated his 47th birthday in style as he won all three matches to seal Palms’ first double over the eel-munchers. It put them level on points with two matches in hand. Trap Door stay fourth, despite being held to a draw at Allstars. Bar 180 B, Phoenix Knights and Nauta A all chalked up wins, while Hoops spanked Target 9-1 in a lively affair. At the bottom, Dreamers are as good as safe after making it four unbeaten with victory at 8 Ball Massive, Men of Atlantis got a valuable point from Terrace A and Bar La Caña are off the bottom for the first time this year. They swopped places with Legends A following a 6-4 success. There will be six teams who still feel they can win Divison Two after another topsy-turvey week. With

Gaffers not playing until this Tuesday, Legends B blew the chance to pull away as they were turned over at Bar 180 C. Phoenix Potters and Bar Tasca kept up their title charge, and Nauta B are bang in the mix following a fine win at Summerland Elite. Inn The Pink won again, but they need results to start going their way if they are to go up - and the same goes for Hammers C. Exiles won a rare home match, while Palms B and Toscales Tangos played out a watertight draw. This week its cup finals week, and there are two mouth-watering match-ups. Palms Bar, in Torviscas, hosts and everyone is welcome to cheer on the teams. In the Liberty Seguros Cup, Toscales Old Boys go in search of one more upset. Alex’s lads have been in blistering form in 2011, and their win over Superstars will have them brimming with confidence. They battled back well in the semi-final to overcome

Inn The Pink, and they will relish the support of being underdogs, but they face another hard tie. Palms A were as good as out when they trailed Hoops 5-1 in their semi-final. But they showed true grit to force a play-off, and ice-cool Bungalow won the decider. They will NOT have any home-table advantage as the match is being played on table two, but they have the experience from being finalists two years ago, and they field five “representative” players. It may be the difference. The Liberty Seguros Plate has been a brilliant competition, with surprises and upsets the norm. Bar Tasca will start as favourites and they are in fine form.

They bounced back in style this week after their thrashing by Inn The Pink and they have the team to win this. But Summerland Elite are draw specialists and at full strength, they will fancy their chances. Also, they are unbeaten in the two meetings between the sides. They drew on opening day but edged out Tasca in January and they have winning form at the venue. They needed an 11th frame to beat Tenerife Hammers C in an earlier round. It’s too close to call and should be a magical final. Tables are available for the finalists from 5pm, and the team sheets will be exchanged at 815pm, with the matches starting at 8.30pm.

22 April 2011 - 28 April 2011

REAL MADRID dropped a real clanger yesterday (Thursday) after winning the prestigious King’s Cup for the first time in 17 years. One of their stars dropped the cup from the top of an open-top bus after a night of

team celebrations following their 1-0 extra-time victory over Barcelona in Valencia – and the bus ran over it, smashing the trophy into several pieces. After ending their bitter rivals recent La Liga dominance, the team celebrated their Cup victory long and loud before returning to Madrid’s Barajas airport at 3.35am yesterday. They then headed to the Bernabéu on

the open-top bus. Just before they arrived, Sergio Ramos let slip the trophy (Spain’s equivelant of the FA Cup). The bits were collected and taken inside the bus, where Real directors tried unsuccessfully to fix it. Even that mishap did not dampen the party, however, and team captain Iker Casillas climbed up to decorate the Goddess of Cibeles with a Real

Madrid scarf at 4.30am. But the players’ jubilation was short-lived because they were called in for training at 5,30pm in preparation for their league match against Valencia tomorrow (Saturday). Real, coached by former Chelsea favourite Jose Mourinio, meet Barcelona again on Wednesday in the Champions League semi-final first leg.
