“The 21st century shall be spiritual or it shall not be.” This radical statement by the influential writer and thinker André Malraux does not seem to have been prophetic. And still, it is possible that its expected fulfillment be increasingly necessary, precisely at this time when cynicism, as a life attitude, also associated to art, has become the sign of contemporaneity itself. Many practices, more lucrative than artistic, resort to the exercise of disdain to please a “bourgeoisie” that is no longer scandalized by anything.

However, after the media show that accompanies these practices the only thing left behind is a trail of disconcertment and the growing feeling that nothing can move us any longer. Ignoring the trends of the time and responding, as Kandinsky advised, to the “dictate of the interior need,” Heriberto Mora uses painting and sculpture as mediums capable of translating the untranslatable experience of contemplation into visible forms. His luminous art –more and more akin to the immateriality of white resembles the serenity of the mystic artisan who has found a way to show us the original image of a world where it is possible to listen to silence and to watch the emergence of perfectly decipherable symbols. They speak of the unity between nature and the human spirit, or between the realm of everyday things and of the invisible.

“El siglo XXI será espiritual o no será”. La radical afirmación del influyente escritor y pensador André Malraux no parece haber sido profética. Y sin embargo, es posible que su esperado cumplimiento nos sea cada vez más necesario, justo en este tiempo donde el cinismo como actitud vital, también asociada al arte, se ha convertido en signo de la misma contemporaneidad.

Muchas prácticas, más lucrativas que artísticas, recurren al ejercicio del desdén para complacer a una “burguesía” que ya no se espanta de nada; pero tras el espectáculo mediático que las acompaña, sólo dejan tras de sí una estela de desconcierto y la creciente sensación de que nada puede ya conmovernos. Desoyendo las tendencias de la época, y respondiendo, como aconsejaba Kandinsky, al mandato de la necesidad interior, Heriberto Mora transforma la pintura y la escultura en medios capaces de traducir en formas visibles la experiencia intraducible de la contemplación. Su luminoso arte se asemeja a la quietud de un artesano místico que ha encontrado una vía para mostrarnos la imagen original de un mundo donde es posible escuchar el silencio y ver aparecer símbolos, perfectamente descifrables, que hablan de la unidad entre la naturaleza y el espíritu humano, o entre el reino de las cosas cotidianas y el de lo invisible.

“If I had to define my works, I would say they are spiritual scenes, expressed via forms of the physical world,” says Mora, who knows that art may open connecting passages with a mode of high awareness. Tired of the falsehood of grandiloquent words, we have lost the capacity for reverence, becoming indifferent to the expressions essential for this artist that speak of the Earth as a work of God and as a common home.

Nonetheless, his paintings and sculptures incarnate those notions with such a concrete poetic, that they awaken in us the feeling of recovering something invaluable that we had forgotten, something that allows us to find the sense of purity and truth in artistic creation.

“Si tuviese que definir mis obras, diría que son escenas espirituales, expresadas con formas del mundo físico”, declara Mora, quien sabe que el arte puede abrir pasajes de conexión con un modo de alta conciencia. Cansados con la falsedad de las grandes palabras, hemos perdido la capacidad de la reverencia, y nos hemos vuelto indiferentes ante las expresiones –esenciales para este artista– que hablan de la Tierra como obra de Dios y como casa común. Pero sus pinturas y esculturas encarnan estas nociones con una poética tan concreta que despierta en quienes las vemos la sensación de recobrar algo invaluable que habíamos olvidado, un cierto modo de pureza y verdad en la creación artística.

Unlike the aesthetics of fragmentation and extreme isolation reflected by those same characteristics of Postmodernism, Heriberto Mora offers us a language of transcendence, in the midst of an ocean of skepticism that surrounds us. In Forms of Stillness he sustains, as something sacred, an artistic truth that is as spiritual as it is visual. I can affirm with total conviction that this solo show by Heriberto Mora at Canale Diaz Art Center represents a culminating moment in his trajectory. It includes a new group of works that I designate as “the series of white paintings” due to the predominance of the light that covers the scenes of the world he represents with a patina of unreality. And it also includes a series of wood sculptures, which constitute an overwhelming expression of spirituality in art. Both types of works convey that “joy for ever” through which John Keats defined beauty.

A diferencia de las estéticas de la fragmentación y del aislamiento extremo que reflejan esas mismas características de la posmodernidad, Heriberto Mora nos ofrece un lenguaje de trascendencia. En medio del océano de escepticismo que nos rodea, el arte que reúne en Formas de la Quietud se presenta como una ofrenda: el artista ofrece, como algo sagrado, un modo de verdad espiritual y visual. Puedo afirmar con total convicción que esta exhibición individual de Heriberto Mora en Canale Díaz Art Center representa un momento cumbre en su trayectoria. Incluye un nuevo grupo de obras que designo como la “serie de pinturas blancas” por la predominancia de la luz que cubre con una pátina de inmaterialidad las escenas del mundo. Incluye además, una serie de esculturas en madera que constituyen una expresión sobrecogedora de la espiritualidad en el arte. En ambos medios las obras transmiten “ese gozo para siempre” con el que definió el poeta John Keats la belleza.

For Heriberto Mora, giving shape to this expression is an imperative that is always too much for him, “a painful delight” which satisfies him as much as it leaves him dissatisfied, as he himself confesses, since the challenge of creating the great visual poem of which Leonardo in person dreamed is immeasurable. Yet the fact is that each canvas and each sculpture that emerges from his hands of mystic artisan is part of the bond which ties his soul to life itself.

Mora is an explorer of the spiritual realms.

Since his childhood he has experienced an inner apprehension that led him to search in the various religious traditions. “In the first years of this search –he reminisces– I drank from the fountains of oriental spirituality, that is, Buddhism, Zen and the philosophy of Indian yogi. Later, I discovered Christian mystic literature and then the circle closed: all loose ends disappeared and I found the thread that led me out of the labyrinth”.

Alcanzarla es para Mora un imperativo interior que lo supera siempre, “un doloroso deleite” que lo satisface tanto como lo deja insatisfecho, según confiesa, pues el reto de crear el gran poema visual con el que soñaba Leonardo es infinito. Pero cada tela y cada escultura que sale de sus manos de artesano místico es parte del tejido que anuda su alma a la vida misma.

Mora es un explorador de los reinos espirituales. Desde su infancia experimentó una inquietud interior que lo llevó a buscar en las diversas tradiciones religiosas. “En los primeros años de esta búsqueda –rememora– bebí en las fuentes de la espiritualidad oriental, el budismo, el zen y la filosofía yogui de la India. Luego, descubrí la literatura mística cristiana y entonces se cerró un círculo: desaparecieron todos los cabos sueltos y encontré el hilo hacia la salida del laberinto”.

The title of one of the earlier paintings of the series of white paintings, Ishi means Man, replicates the famous book in which the Trappist mystic Thomas Merton records the story of the last survivor of the Yahi people, who in the early 20th century arrived in Oroville, northern California, dirty and emaciated, perhaps harassed by the last frontier of loneliness. The painting shows the advance of the territory covered with houses over the green territory that is a metaphor of “Ishi”, as the Indian who only repeated that word, equivalent of “man”, in a language that no one on Earth would ever speak again, was known. But in the center of the displaced green land, painted from the aerial perspective which is characteristic of all his open landscapes, the eye discovers the form of a key. The key that without knowing it, all the inhabitants of the identical houses long for and need. The meaning of the term Ishi, man, human, is a way of reminding us that this is the noun common to all. In the painting Unidad, there is also a key that can only be seen from above. Not less common is the Earth which our specie shares and which in many paintings appears as a vast inhabited space which unfolds around a central object or element.

El título de uno de los cuadros antecesores de la serie de pinturas blancas, Ishi Means Man, emplea justamente las palabras del famoso libro en el que el místico trapense Thomas Merton recoge la historia real del último sobreviviente del pueblo Yahi, que a comienzos del siglo XX llegó sucio y desharrapado a Oroville, en el norte de California, tal vez acosado por la frontera última de la soledad. El cuadro muestra el avance del territorio poblado de casas sobre el territorio verde que es metáfora de “Ishi”, como se conoció al indígena que sólo repetía esta palabra, equivalente a “hombre” en una lengua que ya nadie hablaría jamás en la Tierra. Pero en el centro de las arboledas desplazadas que pinta desde esa perspectiva aérea, que es característica de todos sus parajes abiertos, el ojo descubre la forma de una llave. La llave que sin saberlo anhelan y necesitan todos los habitantes de la multitud de casas uniformes. El significado del término Ishi, hombre, humano, es un modo de recordarnos que éste es el sustantivo común a todos. También hay una llave que sólo puede ser vista desde arriba en la pintura Unidad. No menos común es la tierra que nuestra especie comparte y que en muchas pinturas aparece como un vasto espacio habitado que se despliega en torno a un objeto o elemento central.

In Perseverance, the reels of thread of many colors –substitutes of our bodies– gather around the horizon where an immense scissor, perhaps indicating both the end of existence and the threshold to other territories, seems to float. As in all truly poetical works, the symbols and their readings multiply. A similar composition is found in The Song of the Sea, yet this time the dance of mankind is represented in the sea of clay houses gathered around a windmill, tall and unusual. In his art, the small houses refer to family as root from which the spirituality of mankind is knitted.

En Perseverance los carretes de hilo de múltiples colores –sucedáneos de nuestros cuerpos– se agrupan en torno al horizonte donde parece flotar una inmensa tijera que puede señalar tanto el término de la existencia como el umbral hacia otros territorios. Como en toda obra poética los símbolos y sus lecturas se multiplican. Una composición semejante aparece en The Song of the Sea. La humanidad se representa en el mar de casas de adobe agrupadas en torno a un molino, alto e insólito.

Windmills and their arms appear time and again in his work, yet in the series of white paintings, which may bring to mind an expression of the mystic John Scotus: “…this universal manufactory of the world is a vast lamp”, they evoke the wheel of existence itself and its transcendent dimension. In The Miller, the structure of this object so close to working the land, becomes transformed into a sort of machine for contemplating infinity.

Towers or vertical structures are omnipresent and a metonymy of the same human being who lives and moves in an ceaseless dynamics between the intangible and the tangible, between heaven and earth. In the more recent white paintings, like The Solitude of a Bird (a similar title to that of the famous text by Saint John of the Cross) the notion of transit between those two spaces, may adopt the form of a labyrinth seen from above or of a territory observed by a viewer.

Los molinos y sus aspas aparecen una y otra vez en su obra, pero en la serie de pinturas blancas, que evocan una expresión del místico Juan de Escoto: “…de allí que esta fábrica del mundo sea un grandísimo resplandor”, representan la misma rueda de la existencia y su dimensión trascendente. En The Miller, la estructura de este objeto tan cercano al trabajo de la tierra, se transforma en una suerte de máquina para la contemplación de lo infinito. Torres y estructuras verticales son metonimia del mismo ser humano que vive y transita en una dinámica incesante entre lo intangible y lo tangible, entre el cielo y la tierra. En las más recientes pinturas blancas, como The Solitude of a Bird (título semejante al famoso texto de San Juan de la Cruz) la noción de tránsito entre estos dos espacios puede tomar la forma de un laberinto visto desde arriba o de un territorio observado por un contemplador.

Whereas in the vast and aerial spaces the materiality of the bodies seems to fade away under the glare of the light of Mora’s universe, there is a series of small format oil paintings in which a combination of ochre and blue hues predominates, as a perfect fusion of earthly and aerial elements. These are inner spaces where couples who contemplate and celebrate together the sacred nature of simple existence on Earth often appear.

Si en los espacios vastos y aéreos la materialidad de los cuerpos parece desvanecerse bajo el resplandor de la luz del universo de Mora, hay una serie de óleos de formato pequeño en los cuales predomina una combinación de tonos ocres y azules, como perfecta fusión de elementos terráqueos y aéreos. Son espacios interiores donde suelen aparecer parejas que contemplan y ofician juntas el carácter sagrado que tiene la simple existencia en la Tierra.

The way in which Heriberto Mora understands poetry in his art appears with unusual force in the sculpture Renacer (Rebirth). A huge tower, laboriously built with small wood splinters, rises to the ceiling like a sort of sacred mountain made from the remnants of the trees. Two tall chairs –substitutes of the human bodies– rise from its sides to the top, a plain where the eye discovers the surprising presence of a small plant. That which greens in this way is not only the realm of the living, but also the notion of encounter and dialogue suggested by the chairs which are placed facing one another. In an implicit way, the notion of couple and of love itself is also present here, a notion which in this time of disbelief, Heriberto Mora dares to name in this and other works. It is not less true that in order to achieve the patience required by the Renacer, he invoked in his atelier, during long months, the protection of Joseph and Jesus of Nazareth, “since they were both carpenters”.

El modo en que Heriberto Mora entiende la poesía en su arte se aprecia con inusitada fuerza en la escultura Renacer (Rebirth). Una inmensa torre, laboriosamente construida con pequeñas astillas de madera, se eleva hasta el techo al modo de una montaña sagrada hecha con los restos de los árboles.

Dos sillas altas –también sucedáneas de los cuerpos humanos– se elevan desde sus costados hasta la cumbre, una planicie donde el ojo encuentra la sorpresa de una pequeña planta. Lo que reverdece así, no sólo es el reino de lo vivo, sino la noción de encuentro y diálogo sugeridos por las sillas situadas una frente a otra. De modo implícito, está aquí también presente la noción de pareja y la del mismo amor, que en esta época incrédula Heriberto Mora se atreve a representar. No menos cierto es que para lograr la paciencia que exigía la construcción de Renacer invocó en su taller, durante largos meses, la protección de José y de Jesús de Nazareth, “pues ambos ejercieron la carpintería”.

His oriental apprentices are present in sculptures like Ikebana, entitled as the Japanese art of flower arrangement. It also talks of dialogue, since both flowers are literally shaped like an ear and a microphone. The dialogue that Mora propitiates is not only one between members of the human species, but also between each one of us and the whole Earth. In a way that is better understood knowing Ishi’s story, in the interactive sculpture Chess, the skeleton of the fish becomes a “chessboard” where each one can move the pieces of the game –pines and houses– searching for balance between Nature and civilization. It is not the first time that Mora creates a wooden “toy”: a playful element, associated to the search for harmony, is another key to his work. Each labyrinth is in its way a game, as is the voyage through the Universe itself.

Los aprendizajes orientales están también presentes. Su escultura Ikebana, titulada como el arte japonés del arreglo floral habla igualmente del diálogo pues las dos flores tienen las formas literales de una oreja y de un micrófono. El diálogo que Mora propicia no sólo es entre miembros de la especie humana, sino entre cada uno de nosotros y la tierra entera. De un modo que se comprende mejor conociendo la historia de Ishi, en la escultura interactiva Chess, el esqueleto del pez deviene en un “tablero de ajedrez” donde cada quien puede mover las piezas del juego –pinos y casas– buscando el equilibrio entre naturaleza y civilización. No es la primera vez que Mora crea un “juguete” de madera: el elemento lúdico, asociado a la búsqueda de la armonía, es otra clave de lectura de su obra. Cada laberinto es a su manera un juego, como lo es la misma travesía del universo.

The formal challenge of his sculpture Woman, a bronze piece which viewed from the front resembles a line, is that it moves between drawing and sculpture in such a way that its three-dimensional character only becomes completed with the projection of its shadow. The body’s interior, conceived not as a volume but as a silhouette, is a labyrinth, “as the feminine soul”, according to Mora, which culminates in a house, resembling the home. As Mora states, “It represents the bridge between the subtle, the spiritual world and everyday life.”

El desafío formal de su escultura Woman, una pieza en bronce que vista de frente asemeja a una línea, es que transita entre el dibujo y la escultura de tal modo que su tridimensionalidad sólo se completa con la proyección de su sombra. El interior del cuerpo, concebido no como volumen sino como silueta, es un laberinto que culmina en una casita. Como afirma Mora, “representa el puente entre lo sutil, el mundo espiritual y la cotidianeidad”.

Another sculpture vested with wonder that challenges the standards of the time and of the milieu itself, is a robe sculpted with 17,636 knots, which make allusion to the fabric of life in which all our existences are tied and interweave. The sculpture creates landscapes between its inner and outer spaces, allows us to see through it and as it is traversed by light, it projects changing shadows. As the rest of the works, it has the power of evoking that statement by Dostoyevski that Heriberto Mora treasures as the driving force of his art: “Beauty will save the world”.

Otra escultura investida de maravilla, que desafía las convenciones de la época y del medio mismo, es el hábito esculpido con una infinidad de nudos alusivos al tejido de la vida en el que se anudan e interrelacionan todas nuestras existencias. La escultura crea pasajes entre su espacio interior y exterior; permite que se vea a través de ella, y en tanto es atravesada por la luz, proyecta sombras cambiantes. Como las demás obras, tiene el poder de evocar aquella afirmación de Dostoievski que Heriberto Mora atesora como fuerza generadora de su arte: “La belleza salvará al mundo”.

Nace el 06 de diciembre de 1965 en La Habana, Cuba y estudia en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas San Alejandro de 1983 a 1987. Es artista residente en el Centro Cultural Hispánico para las Artes RAICES y se desempeña como profesor de artes plásticas de diferentes programas de la División de Parques y Recreación del condado de Miami-Dade desde 2003.
