Thefts from motor vehicles are on the increase By Dan Jensen

Camrose Police Service has noticed a trend in property crime statistics for 2011. "Our statistics show that there have been more thefts from motor vehicle complaints this year as compared to previous years," said Const. Matthew Wilton. Within the city limits there were 164 thefts from motor vehicles from January 2011 to the end of October 2011. The thieves are targeting various types of motor vehicles and the occurrences have been all over the city

"Investigations have determined that offenders primarily target multiple unlocked vehicles at night," said Const. Wilton. The Camrose Police Service is teaming up with the Alberta Motor Association to inform the public about the increased risk of becoming the next target for these thieves. "As a large majority of the thefts have involved unlocked vehicles we want to remind all drivers to ensure that their vehicle doors are locked and the windows are rolled

up whenever their vehicles are left unattended," said Cst. Wilton. Police and AMA also recommend that residents remove any items of value from their vehicles. Items commonly stolen include: GPS units, change, wallets, purses, iPods/mp3 players, personal documents including insurance and registration, and keys. Police recommend that all valuable items be removed from your vehicle on a daily basis. "We would also like to specifically remind residents to remove

extra keys from their vehicles because the majority of vehicles that are stolen in Camrose have had keys “hidden” inside of them," said Const. Wilton. Residents can participate in AMA’s “All Valuables Removed” program by visiting the Camrose AMA or the Camrose Police Service, where they can pick up a placard that informs thieves that everything of value has been removed from inside their vehicle. "With the holiday upon us, shopping centres and parking lots

are prime target areas for thieves hoping to window shop in parked vehicles," said Const. Wilton. "Ensure items are placed out of sight in the trunk. If possible refrain from storing any holiday purchases inside your vehicle. "Vehicle thefts happen very fast, can be at anytime of the day, and can happen anywhere. That is why the best way to prevent yourself from being a victim is to properly secure your vehicle and remove all valuables."
