INTRODUCTION Welcome to London and the 12th London Design Festival. Camron has been working with the Festival team for eight years and this one promises to be the biggest and best, with an impressive collection of landmark projects and a wide variety of design events taking place across the capital over the ten-day Festival. The London Design Festival website is the best source of information: londondesignfestival.com but the printed guide is very good too. This year it will be bigger in size, to accommodate the increase in partners and provide more space for editorial comment, and it will be available to collect at all participating locations. The Victoria and Albert Museum will be the ‘hub’ of the Festival for the sixth year. The Festival’s relationship with the museum continues to grow. This year, visitors will encounter some spectacular installations, interventions and exhibitions as well as a Graphics Weekend (13-14 September) and a Digital Weekend (20-21 September). We are delighted that Edward Barber OBE and Jay Osgerby OBE are working with BMW to present Double Space, a real show-stopper presenting two kinetic mirrored structures in the beautiful Raphael Gallery. Glass artist Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert has worked with Perrier-Jouët to present an installation of huge glass cylinders (made by one of the oldest mouth-blown glass factories in Germany), Zaha Hadid has created Crest, a polished bridge-like structure over the pool in the Madejski Garden which reflects the sky on the surface and the rippling water on the underneath and Felix de Pass, Ian McIntyre and Michael Mongomery have created Candela, a glowing installation in the V&A’s Tapestry Gallery and the Wish List, an idea initiated by Sir Terence Conran brings together established and emerging designers to create pieces out of American Hardwood. In Trafalgar Square, from 18 – 22 September, Airbnb is supporting the presentation of four structures which represent the idea of home. A Place Called Home offers the vision of a ‘perfect home’ from leading designers: Jasper Morrison, Studioilse, Patternity and Raw-Edges. From a Pigeon fancier’s house to a home that expands and contracts to reveal rooms, this installation will inspire and beguile visitors to London’s leading square. Elsewhere, the London Design Festival embraces the major trade shows: 100% design at Earl’s Court (for the last year, before it moves to Olympia), designjunction at the Old Sorting Office, Tent London & Superbrands London at the Old Truman Brewery, Focus/14 in Design Centre Chelsea Harbour and Decorex International which has moved to Syon House. This year, there are six design districts and elsewhere there are special exhibitions, events, talks, tours and ‘happenings’ going on within retailers, design studios, galleries, cafes, hotels and restaurants. This pack contains press releases, our own list of highlights, suggestions for the best places to eat and re-charge batteries (literally) with free WiFi and good coffee. There are plenty of launches, parties and events to attend and the Camron team will be on hand to help you to find your way around the city. TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS A PLACE CALLED HOME Airbnb has invited four acclaimed designers, Jasper Morrison, Patternity, Raw-Edges and Studioilse, to design their interpretations of the meaning of ‘home’. The four structures will live in Trafalgar Square for five days and range from a Pigeon fancier’s house to an interior with the ability to transform its internal space to create different rooms within a home. DOUBLE SPACE FOR BMW Fascinated by the themes of movement and the perception of space, multi-disciplinary designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have devised an immersive, kinetic sculpture in conjunction with BMW that distorts the viewer’s sense of perspective as they view the Raphael cartoons on display at the V&A, as well as the architecture of the space. THE WISH LIST A collaborative fusion of design experience, young talent and craftsmanship. Sir Terence Conran and Benchmark Furniture have teamed up with the American Hardwood Export Council to invite ten illustrious names in design and architecture to each nominate an emerging talent to collaborate on a very open brief. CANDELA Candela refers to the standard unit of luminous intensity: a candle equals roughly one candela. Designers Felix de Pass, Ian McIntyre and Michael Montgomery, with expertise in different design fields, have collaborated to create an installation which is graphical in its visual impact, delicately engineered and crafted using both traditional and cutting edge materials. HUMAN NATURE The entrance to the V&A’s Glass Galleries will be transformed by a site specific work created by the Paris-based designer Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert. He was fascinated by freshly made, mouth-blown glass cylinders he saw at Glashütte Lamberts in Waldsassen, Germany. In collaboration with leading glass specialist Vessel Gallery and supporters Perrier-Jouët, Wintrebert’s installation plays with the balance of light and form as well as the strength and fragility of glass. TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS CREST By Zaha Hadid Architects and commissioned by Meliã Hotels International, Crest provides an engaging feature across the pool in the centre of the V&A’s John Madejski Garden. Hadid’s structure reflects the sky on one side and the rippling water on the underside.

V&A DESIGN FUND The Design Fund enables the V&A to continue to acquire objects at the vanguard of contemporary design, and each year the new acquisitions are revealed during London Design Festival for the benefit of the public. This year’s selection of contemporary acquisitions encompasses works by both emerging and established international designers and architects. BREATHLESS BEAUTY BROKEN BEAUTY Over 12 months film maker Vanessa Jane Hall travelled England to create video canvasses that capture the raw beauty of the country house, whether sparkling or faded. Observers step inside the temple-like sculpture and find themselves cocooned in an immersive audio-visual environment. This three dimensional work takes the observer on an atmospheric journey that awakens the soul to the beauty and drama of these intriguing buildings. MILITARY SECRET, JAMES RIGLER Visitors can step inside Trajan’s Column to discover an installation by James Rigler, a contemporary ceramicist who creates sculptures and installations that question the architecture and meaning of the places around us.

ALAN KITCHING AND MONOTYPE This free talk is part of the Graphics Weekend at the V&A. Alan Kitching is one of the world’s foremost practitioners of letterpress typographic design and printmaking. Alan will show works from his 50-year career, including a detailed look at a recent collaboration with Monotype.

TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS TYPETASTING WITH SARAH HYNDMAN A free talk with graphic designer Sarah Hyndman, who will demonstrate how typefaces influence what we read and how we interpret type. The audience will learn how we respond to type and are also drawn to fonts which reflect our personalities and aesthetics. Sarah will reveal the results of her ‘Type Dating Game’ which reveals the fonts which are the most (and least) popular. 100% DESIGN 100% Design is the largest design trade event of its kind in the UK, covering interiors, the workplace, kitchens and bathrooms, emerging talents as well as eco, design and build. Celebrating 20 editions, this is the UK’s biggest design event, which continues to inspire with more installations, features and exhibits more than any other show. This year Philippe Starck opens 100% Design and launches his latest designs. Location: Earls Court Exhibition Centre, 2 Warwick Road, SW5 9TA Dates: 17 - 20 September
DECOREX INTERNATIONAL Internationally renowned for being the paramount event to discover the very best in luxury design, Decorex provides a unique platform for launching into the most coveted end of the interior design world. With the focus on increasing number of specialist international exhibitors, this year will see the latest and greatest products thrust into the Decorex limelight, as well as the opportunity to discover stunning installations from the most illustrious designers. DESIGNJUNCTION The fourth edition of the critically acclaimed designjunction returns to the magnificent Sorting Office for its flagship London show. Spanning four enormous floors, the show presents more than 180 brands promoting design, retail and innovation. There is a powerful line-up of leading global brands, smaller cutting-edge labels, more than 25 design-led pop-up shops, large scale installations, a dedicated lightjunction show, on-site eateries and vibrant flash factories. AT DESIGNJUNCTION TEDDY’S WISH Iconic British design brands, ercol and Anglepoise, have donated chairs and lamps which will be auctioned in support of Teddy’s Wish to fund research into the causes of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS BARONCELLI London based design studio Baroncelli celebrate their 20th anniversary this year. Creative Director, Giovanni Corrado has established Baroncelli as an innovative studio, and this September showcases signature designs at designjunction and Decorex. Exclusive previews of the new Arlo chandelier and Atomos wall light will celebrate Baroncelli’s relationship with master craftsmen, pushing creativity and exploring new ways of working with glass. TENT LONDON & SUPER BRANDS LONDON East London is firmly established as the most creative design destination, with Tent London & Super Brands London at its heart. The 11-acre hub is known for presenting extraordinary interior products from 290 global brands, independents and undiscovered talents, and a collection of country pavilions. GRAHAM & BROWN Leading British wallpaper brand Graham & Brown is proud to present New Wave at Tent London and preview its latest studio and designer collections at Superbrands. AFRODITI KRASSA AfroditiKrassa studio has been commissioned to design the bar within Super Brands London. Designed as a catwalk, visitors sit around the staging utilising the space as a grand table, whilst models are showcasing the hottest work from new fashion designers. The AK Bar will also host an in-situ launch of the AKollection, the studio’s debut collection of tiles and lighting. The range of bold monochrome tiles and smoked and bevelled mirrors reference the glamour of Art Deco design. TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS CAFÉ SMUG SMUG will be launching the Islington Design District with a programme of fantastic design-led activities, workshops and an exciting new exclusive collection from Donna Wilson. TINCAN BY AL_A SUPPORTED BY DUPONT™ CORIAN® AL_A presents tincan, a six month restaurant project in Soho which elevates the humble tin to an object of desire. Everything from light fittings and wall displays to tables and chairs will be created specifically for the space. The AL_A team was inspired to create this pop up after finding a former fishing tackle shop in Lisbon which had been transformed into a tiny, vibrant restaurant serving only tinned seafood. THE BUILDING CENTRE WIKIHOUSE 4.0 The world’s first open source, digitally-printed house will be built in Central London. The WikiHouse is a low energy house that anyone can download, adapt, ‘print’ and assemble in a few days, with no construction skills, and for less than £50k. Led by Arup, Zero zero and The Building Centre.

THE RAG AND BONE MAN Designer-Craftsman Paul Firbank is setting up The Rag and Bone Man’s pop up workshop in the Queens Park Design District with live projects, using components from end of life vehicles and local industrial scrap which he transforms into beautiful bespoke lighting, furniture and accessories.

WITH BLACK CATS, STUDIO JOB Studio Job stages a quirky collection of lighting cats. These pets, frozen by the alchemy of bronze, form a range of fascinating black feline sculptures, lit by a pair of fierce eyes. These silent figures join Studio Job’s universe, made of still objects to which they give a soul.

TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS TOTAL FABRICATION Total Fabrication is an interactive exhibition of contemporary design for interiors with a material twist. Craft Central reveals the work of a talented group of makers with an innovative approach to materials. The exhibit evolves as the exhibitorsdemonstrate weird and wonderful craft processes.

HAY & WRONG FOR HAY DESIGN & DINE IN/ ANTTO MELASNIEMI Hay & Wrong for Hay open the doors to their new showroom in St James’s Park to show a specially curated installation featuring new product launches alongside pieces that were presented in Milan. Visitors to the space can enjoy respite at a popup café run by guest chef Antto Melasniemi. For the evening, guests can book into limited spaces to be part of a unique design and dining experience at the exhibition, as well as on a terrace overlooking St James’s Park. 19 GREEK STREET 19 Greek Street presents the Design Café, a quirky design-focused take on the tradition of ‘high tea’. The café is open to the public (usually by appointment) for the duration of the Festival and will be presenting its latest collection of quirky and playful design icons.

BOCCI X MALLETT AT ELY HOUSE Bocci collaborates with the antique dealer Mallett. This showcase presents a collage of old and new works. These contemporary pieces, shown in the context of the Mallett space, suggest a counter-intuitive sense of time in which new objects seem older than the antiques.

DO SHOP Do Shop presents the latest Toiletpaper collection of tableware from Seletti, launching a brand new collection of OLED table lights from Blackbody and unveils the new designers selected for our annual Do Masters programme, the leading selling exhibition of products by new design graduates.

PRIESTMANGOODE BRIGHT IDEAS TO MAKE LIFE BETTER Bright Ideas to Make Life Better is an exhibition showcasing projects across the spectrum of design – from product, to graphic, spatial and transport in Priestmangoode’s new central London headquarters. Today’s designers are responding to pressing global issues such as urban density, poor air quality and wasted resources by coming up with clever solutions to help people face these new challenges. RIBA REGENT STREET WINDOWS PROJECT Now in its fifth year, the RIBA Regent Street Windows Project has matched cutting edge RIBA architects with some of London’s most prestigious retailers to create stunning architectural installations in shop windows along and around London’s Regent Street. This year 15 architecture practices, have worked with 15 retailers to create a sequence of stunning architectural installations on Regent Street, Heddon Street and Brewer Street. ACE HOTEL LONDON SHOREDITCH Ace Hotel London Shoreditch will be a central destination during London Design Festival as Shoreditch Design Triangle’s official hub location and host to a series of design-focused installations and activities by Modern Design Review in the show ‘Super Stimuli’ throughout its communal areas. Fabrica will also present ‘Extra-Ordinary Gallery’, a study of ordinary things, in the hotel’s reception retail space. TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS ZINTA BY ARPER Weaving through a space with subtle dexterity, Zinta, a modular sofa system by Italian furniture company Arper, will be on display at Arper’s Clerkenwell showroom during the London Design Festival showcasing the options available from this versatile product.

DAN TOBIN SMITH THE FIRST LAW OF KIPPLE Inspired by Phillip K Dicks literary invention, Kipple, which describes the useless objects and detritus that accumulate and surround us. The installation explores Kipple’s parallels with the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, a theory describes how all heat in the universe flows from a hot ordered state into a cold disordered one and which predicts the eventual heat death of the universe. DESIGNERSBLOCK LONDON EDITION 17 Designersblock showcases multidisciplinary design from over 100 independent designers, collectives and companies. The show takes place in The Old Sessions House, one of London’s most iconic buildings. Constructed in 1779, the 3,000 sq m building was the busiest Courthouse in England for over 100 years.

DONNA WILSON RAINY DAY POP-UP SHOP Internationally acclaimed textile designer Donna Wilson transforms a shipping container into the Rainy Day Pop-Up Shop at BOXPARK, featuring an overhead installation of soft raindrops, murals showcasing her new fabrics, a ‘selfie station’ and knitted creatures everywhere. Special events every day.

FLOS ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING FROM FLOS BY CARL KLEINER Atrium will showcase a photographic exhibition from Flos by sensational Swedish talent Carl Kleiner. Created in collaboration with Omar Sosa, the works celebrate Flos’ latest Architectural Lighting collections using Kleiner’s typically abstract compositions in bold colours and geometric formations.

TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS THE GOODHOOD STORE THE ART OF SKATEBOARDING With its roots lying in subcultures – one of which is skateboarding – Goodhood pays homage to a culture that spawned a generation of creatives by asking leading artists and designers to contribute to the creation of a series of skateboards with stunning results.

LEE BROOM Nouveau Rebel is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the cultural associations of marble, the collection’s core material. This unique installation invites you to take an immersive journey through the transformed space. THE SATURDAY MARKET PROJECT An interactive celebration of exceptional raw materials, tools and technology. HABITAT DESIGN REUNION Curated by Polly Dickens, the Creative Director of Habitat, Design Reunion showcases work from six of London’s most respected names in design and explores the ideas that inspired each piece. The multi-sensory exhibit, created to celebrate 50 years of Habitat design, features new works from Tord Boontje, Clare Norcross, Simon Pengelly, Sarah Campbell, Aaron Probyn and Shin Azumi. TOP 50 HIGHLIGHTS YOO HOME YOO Home, the new retail interiors collection for YOO, will launch exclusive designs at its dedicated space in Harrods, including a beautifully crafted chair and writing desk from Maserati by Zanotta. GETTING AROUND LONDON London Underground (Tube) The Underground is the fastest way to get around the city as London traffic can be unpredictable. To use the Underground you will need to purchase an Oyster card. This is used to tap in and out at each station. Make sure you remember to tap in and tap out as it can over- charge if you don’t. Purchasing an Oyster card can be done at any Underground station at one of the cashiers, at the cost of £5 deposit and then you can add as little or as much pre-paid money on it as you like. Topping up can be done easily at any of the Oyster card machines in each station. You can return your Oyster card to a cashier when leaving London and receive your £5 deposit back. Designed as a catwalk, visitors sit around the staging utilising the space as a grand table, whilst models are showcasing the hottest work from new fashion designers. The AK Bar will also host an in-situ launch of the AKollection, the studio’s debut collection of tiles and lighting. ATRIUM/ FLOS London lighting showroom Atrium provides the setting for Architectural Lighting, a collaboration with FLOS and Swedish photographer Carl Kleiner, for this year’s Festival. The exhibition comprises a series of beautifully realised abstract photographic compositions, aligned into perfect geometric grids. Each one incorporates FLOS luminaries together with sections of coloured paper and industrial materials such as sandpaper, marble, wood and brass. The Architectural Lighting exhibition was first shown in Milan and this is its first time in the UK. BARBER & OSGERBY Edward Barber OBE and Jay Osgerby OBE have devised a dramatic kinetic sculpture for the V&A’s Raphael Gallery; Double Space for BMW: Precision and Poetry in Motion. Fascinated by movement and performance, the designers have explored these themes to create a totally new experience of the architecture and paintings. Two huge reflective structures will be suspended in the centre of the gallery; their choreographed movements will distort the view of the Raphael cartoons on display, and involve the viewer in the performance. Supported by BMW, this feat of engineering chimes with BMW’s own technological innovation and precision with a dramatic structure that is sure to amaze and delight. ERCOL ercol will be presenting a range of new furniture on the second floor of designjunction at the Old Sorting Office during the London Design Festival. The furniture company is also contributing 16 chairs to a charity project initiated by the designjunction team in support of Teddy’s Wish, to fund research into the causes of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) Anglepoise has also contributed to the project and a total of 30 pieces have been re-designed and re-interpreted by many leading designers including Tom Dixon, Paul Cocksedge, Donna Wilson, Benjamin Hubert and others. The chairs and lamps will be auctioned during designjunctions and the winning bids will be announced on 28 September. LEE BROOM Lee Broom is launching Nouveau Rebel, a new collection of lighting and accessories which uses pure Carrara marble.
