FILM: FEATURE

REALISTIC, NIGHTMARISH THRILLER THE CALL STANDS ON ITS OWN Actors Abigail Breslin and Morris Chestnut talk about the new film, which also stars Francis Bertrand

Halle Berry. BY PATRICK MEISSNER Michael Eklund is a crazed serial killer, and Abigail Breslin plays a terrified teenager in The Call. Greg Gayne

Do you remember “Rescue 911?” You know…it was an old CBS docudrama from the early ‘90s, and William Shatner hosted it. On the show, they took real recordings of 911 calls and played them against some cheesy re-enactment. Anyways, Sony Pictures’ The Call is pretty much the same thing as an old episode of “Rescue 911.” However, it’s longer, slightly sexier, a lot more involved, and let’s face it, much, much better. Set in the metropolitan calamity of modern day Los Angeles, The Call is the story of a veteran 911-response operator named Jordan (Halle Berry). When Jordan makes an honest mistake and botches a response call, resulting in horrific tragedy, she decides to hang up her headset for good and shift her focus to teaching rookies rather than working on calls. It’s not until she is faced with a chillingly similar call, months later, that she is drawn back to the phone and has one more chance to save her victim and redeem herself. Apart from being an interesting plot, and apart from having a delightfully star-powered cast to draw viewers, The Call stands by itself as a gripping and truly suspenseful thriller. The concept itself is horrifying enough. Imagine a teenaged girl being kidnapped and thrown into the trunk of an unknown car – it’s gut wrenchingly real and disturbing. When combined with sharp editing, strategic pacing and hair-raising music, the finished picture is enough to induce nightmares. For actress Abigail Breslin (Signs, Little Miss Sunshine, Zombieland), who plays kidnapped teenager Casey, the role was a step out from the normal. In a recent interview with Campus

www.CampusCircle.com

Circle, Breslin said, “I’ve never done something this intense before. I try to do different things all the time so this is definitely different from anything that I’ve done.” She went on to say that filming this role was a bit of a challenge for her, simply because it required a lot of emotional energy. “You just logistically run out of energy after a while,” said Breslin. “You run out of tears, you’re exhausted, but working with such great people like I did on this movie helped to keep that energy level high.” One of the most impressive performances in the The Call is from the film’s maniacal villain, played by Michael Eklund (Watchmen, 88 Minutes). Eklund makes for an outstanding nut job, adding layers to a character that would on the surface seem one-dimensional. His expressions, his repressed rage and his contained outbreaks of violence all point toward a dark psychosis that shapes this frantic, trunk-packing murderer. Berry puts on a strong performance as the lead role of Jordan, albeit her hairdo is kind of atrocious. Cool and composed, yet haunted and eventually vindictive, she is gripping as the central character holding the whole calamity together. You can tell she had done her homework in regards to establishing a character that is reminiscent of the type of person that actually would work in a 911-call center. In fact, this film derives a lot of its appeal from elements of reality – that’s part of the reason why it’s so scary. Actor Morris Chestnut (Boyz ‘N the Hood, Like Mike and Think Like a Man)

plays Officer Paul Phillips. In a recent interview with Campus Circle, he elaborated on the “realness” of the film. “I thought the way the director set up the realism of it [was intriguing],” said Chestnut when asked about what he thought was particularly captivating about the making of this film. “We didn’t have $100 million to do any big CGI or explosions or crazy 35-minute car chases. It was just real things that can happen.” The 911-call center backdrop is particularly effective in this way, because it is a perpetually running workplace located in any given city. The Call’s writer Richard D’Ovidio spent time at L.A.’s downtown call center researching for this film. His knowing of that workplace shows on screen as the film gives a unique insight into how these people operate on a daily basis. The way the film moves is even reflective of the pacing of a call center; it’s relentless. You can feel the exhaustion that would hit you after a Friday night shift at one of these centers. Overall, The Call is worth the time. It’s interesting, and it sticks in your head. Above anything, it’s just plain scary and, for lack of a better word, thrilling. As an effective thriller that will keep your heart racing, The Call is definitely a keeper. With a solid plot, a good concept and some talented actors, you will most likely soil yourself. Chestnut put it a lot more eloquently, though: “Go see The Call because it’s a nonstop suspenseful thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. And you will enjoy it.” The Call releases in theaters on March 15. Campus Circle 3.14.13 - 3.27.13

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Red Dawn and “The Client List”: Season 1 Rhythm and Hues

Oscar-winner Ang Lee’s Life of Pi has beautiful special effects.

BY MIKE SEBASTIAN The Majors: The conclusion to a true pop culture phenomenon, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 finds the birth of Bella and Edward’s child threatening a war between the Cullens and the Volturi. Part 1 is also now available in a new extended edition, which restores eight minutes of footage. An extensive documentary takes you behind the scenes of the back-to-back filming of both films. Poetic director Ang Lee is the perfect match to bring Yann Martel’s modern-classic novel, Life of Pi, to the screen. Lee garnered an Oscar for this story of a young Indian man who survives a shipwreck only to discover he’s trapped on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. It’s a sumptuous adventure and one of the year’s best. A retired soccer star (Gerard Butler) hoping to reconnect with his son and ex-wife reluctantly becomes the boy’s soccer coach in Playing for Keeps. Now, he just has to fend off all the hot soccer moms. It’s a heartfelt romantic comedy with a starstudded cast, including Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid. Easter & Passover Viewing: Making its Blu-ray debut, The Nativity Story tells the tale of a young Mary and Joseph struggling to survive during the harsh reign of Herod. The unlikely Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) directs the fantastic Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider) as Mary. Also new to Blu-ray, One Night with the King is full of lush period production design. It’s the story of a young Jewish girl (Tiffany DuPont) who becomes Esther, queen of Persia, savior of the Jewish nation. Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif co-star.

Not your typical detective (or priest for that matter), Tom Bosley’s titular clergyman in “Father Dowling Mysteries” moonlights as an amateur sleuth. With the help of his streetwise nun sidekick, the priest-detective keeps his Chicago neighborhood safe. Few films have captured the tragedy of the Holocaust like Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. This 20th Anniversary Edition features a pristine high-definition remaster supervised by Spielberg, as well as a feature-length documentary that includes interviews with some of the survivors saved by Schindler. Also available: master of the Biblical adaptation Cecil B. DeMille’s Samson and Delilah Under the Radar: Based on a true story, The Intouchables is a touching drama about a wealthy but eccentric French paraplegic and the impoverished ex-con he hires as a caretaker. The duo turns Paris upside down in its adventures as the two men come to appreciate each other. Winner of a Special Jury Price at Sundance, Smashed stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) as Kate and Charlie Hannah, an alcoholic married couple that struggles to stay together when Kate becomes determined to get sober. Winstead is revelatory while Paul is as magnetic as ever. Nick Offerman (“Parks & Recreation”) and Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace”) co-star. Action! A remake of the ‘80s cult classic, Red Dawn stars Chris Hemsworth as the leader of a group of teenage freedom fighters who must defend their hometown when North Korea stages a

surprise invasion. Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) and Isabel Lucas (Immortals) co-star. The Idiotbox: Scandinavian television is all the rage right now, and it’s no wonder; the region is producing some seriously good dramas. “Borgen:” Season 1 is a look inside the cutthroat world of Danish politics, following the fluke election of Denmark’s first female prime minister as she struggles to hold on to her ideals in the face of nonstop media scrutiny and boy’s club power plays. Spinning off from the hit Lifetime movie, “The Client List:” Season 1 stars Jennifer Love Hewitt as a small-town single mother hit hard by the recession. She takes a job at a massage parlor only to discover that her job description includes a little more than massages. Blu Notes: A underrated gem by the Coen Brothers, The Hudsucker Proxy comes to Blu-ray via the Warner Archives’ website. In keeping with the Coen M.O., it’s an off kilter take on a classic Hollywood genre—in this case, Depression-era screwball comedies. Tim Robbins is a dimwit mailroom clerk who is appointed head of a company as part of a stock scam cooked up by the board, led by Paul Newman. Before The Lord of the Rings hit the big screen, there was Willow. A fantasy epic of high adventure, this ‘80s classic from director Ron Howard follows a short statured, would-be wizard (Warwick Davis) in his quest to protect an orphaned baby from an evil sorceress queen. Val Kilmer is terrific as the swashbuckling cad reluctantly allied with the unlikely hero.

OMG SEXTING IS GR8 <3

Sexting is not all bad; it adds excitement and thrills in relationships.

Sexting might have a bad reputation, but it could actually be beneficial in a romantic relationship.

Glenn Koenig/Los Angeles Times/MCT

BY NICKI SPENCER These days, almost all of the articles that you read about sexting emphasize the negative implications of sending sexual material through the phone. And yet, despite the consistent warnings of the media, sexting manages to remain extremely common amongst college students because, when done properly, sexting can actually stimulate desire within a relationship. When people discuss sexting, most think it involves sending sexually explicit photos to another person via text message. However, it’s not just about the photos. According to Dictionary. com, sexting is “the sending of sexually explicit photos, images, text messages or emails by using a cell phone or other mobile device.” A study conducted by the University of Rhode Island analyzed 200 students on their sexting habits. 78 percent of the college students reported that they received suggestive text messages, more than half have received suggestive images, and two-thirds of them admitted to sexting. Why are so many college students partaking in an act that the media highlights as dangerous and stupid? Well, the media’s disapproving attitude towards sexting may be too extreme. When done in the appropriate context, sexting can actually be an effective approach to spice things up during the day. People like to have a saucy message on their phone to keep things interesting. It’s a nice way to let someone know that you are thinking about them…naked. One communications student at the University of Southern California (who wishes to remain anonymous) attributed sexting to the success of her long distance relationship “He’s studying abroad right now, so sexting helps us keep

8

Campus Circle 3.14.13 - 3.27.13

the fire in our relationship,” she described. “Since we can’t be together, you know, physically, we have to find some other way to be intimate.” A USC astronautical engineering student (who also wishes to remain anonymous) said, “I like sexting because I think it builds sexual tension between two people.” A lot of students think of sexting in a similar way. They use it as a titillating precursor to tonight’s inevitable romp; it is all-day foreplay. Now, there’s an app called Snapchat that has possibly changed the daunting notion of a scandalous message being set in stone. The app allows you to share a photo with someone for up to 10 seconds and once the allotted time has passed, the photo is gone forever. The receiver can no longer look at it, their friends will never see it again, and even you will not be able to gaze upon it. The CEO of Snapchat, Evan Spiegel, claimed that the app was never intended for sexting purposes. However, one CNN article stated, “In an age when young people are constantly being warned not to post inappropriate things online, Snapchat offers a degree of freedom by letting users share unfiltered thoughts or images without much fear of reprisal.” For this reason, much of the buzz about Snapchat involves sexting. Even though sexting does provide students with thrills and exciting, it’s important to note that sexting does have its downfalls. After all, part of the reason for sexting’s bad reputation is due to the great number of minors (mainly teenagers) who partake in the act, which has lead many teens to have child pornography charges filed against them. One article from Time magazine states, “The issue of

younger people sending explicit images and messages via cellphone is increasingly worrying.” Perspectives like this become validated when sexting becomes influential in eliciting bullying and suicide. For instance, Jessica Logan from Ohio took her own life after her boyfriend leaked a nude photo of her as a reaction to their breakup. After the image spread to her high school, Logan endured bullying, isolation and depression that all contributed to her eventual suicide. Today, her parents are suing her daughter’s ex-boyfriend for the invasion of privacy and emotional distress. According to that University of Rhode Island study, onefifth of the people who had received sext messages eventually forwarded them to someone else without the permission of the original sender. Statistics like this make it easy to think twice before sending a scandalous photo; you can never know for certain whether or not that picture or sexy comment will be shared with others. Obviously, the concerns raised by the media are valid, but they also ignore the many cases in which sexting results in fun sexual experiences for both parties. As long as you are mindful of the potential repercussions, sexting can be a good experience. A cautious USC music major (again, anonymous) said, “I think sexting is fine as long as you are smart about it.” She quickly added, “It is important to remember that anything written down or a photo can last forever.” College students are definitely sexting, and this phenomenon of sending sexually explicit messages via cell phone will be around for a long time…and it might not necessarily be a bad thing if students are careful.

JUICY LUCY CHALLENGES DOWNTOWN’S BEST BURGER JOINTS

Not too far from USC, this restaurant is the perfect place to grab a bite while exploring FIGAT7TH. BY ALISA DWYER There’s been a lot of talk recently about the developing urban scene in downtown Los Angeles. Over the past couple of years, innovative eats have been popping up all across downtown. One such venture is a small metropolis of fashion and food just West of the 110 freeway. On the bottom floor of FIGAT7TH, a new shopping destination in downtown Los Angeles, lies a surprising, tranquil escape from the city noise; a space where innovative ideas and good cuisine harmonize called TASTE FIGAT7TH. TASTE FIGAT7TH is a new culinary endeavor of chefdriven, quick-service eateries that attempt to transcend the normal hustle and bustle of ordinary food courts. With nine restaurants slated to be open and fully operational within the coming months, it is no doubt that this culinary mecca will quickly become one of downtown’s hot spots. One of these select eateries is Juicy Lucy, a new concept restaurant that is compelling L.A. burger joints to an entirely different standard. With fresh, local ingredients taking centerstage, Juicy Lucy doesn’t try to side-step quality by overwhelming its dishes with flavors. The restaurant boasts an open layout and café-style seating, making it perfect for a quick business meeting or a trendy lunch with friends. Director of operations, Alexandra Rowinski, said the concept behind Juicy Lucy is as simple as it sounds: fast service

16

and fresh ingredients. Situated in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the staff at Juicy Lucy can appreciate the fast-paced, inand-out mentality of the majority of their customers. The menu is simple enough, consisting of the basic hamburger, cheeseburger, turkey burger and Chef ’s Burger – a daily special involving unique ingredients and new flavors. In short, vegetarians need not apply. The concise menu allows the freshness of the produce and quality of meat to shine through, ensuring that no entrée falls through the cracks. Every burger is made-to-order in front of the customer, allowing the meal to be customized, right down to the last pickle. However, on one Monday I was feeling especially adventurous, so I ordered the Chef Burger and Sriracha Cheese Fries, leaving my fate in the hands of the very qualified people behind the counter. The Chef Burger included a blue cheesestuffed beef patty, seared pork belly, arugula, shaved radish and pickled red onion topped off with a brioche bun. To complement my meal, I tried the two kinds of aguas frescas: pineapple and watermelon. Although both of the drinks were refreshing and light, the pineapple definitely outshined its competitor, proving itself a perfectly crisp accompaniment to my hearty meal. When I took the first bite of my signature burger, I was hooked. Maybe it was the creamy consistency of my blue cheese patty or the freshness of the brioche bun, but every ingredient

came together and melded into sweet harmony. The Sriracha Cheese Fries were pretty good, although I did feel that the thick cheese seemed to mask the fresh flavor of the natural-cut fries. I would definitely recommend going with the sea salt fries if ordering a burger as well. Clearly, no burger would be complete without finishing it off with a creamy milkshake, and Juicy Lucy has covered its bases, offering vanilla, chocolate, mixed berry and salted caramel options. Although my burger was divine, I’m pretty sure I’m a sweet tooth at heart, and I could not put this shake down. The perfect balance of sweet and salty came together with a creamy yet surprisingly light consistency, which allowed me to convince myself that I was absolved from indulging in this sinful treat. The man behind all this culinary genius is Chef Paul Shoemaker, who garnered fame for the “Juicy Lucy” cheeseburger at the highly acclaimed Savory Restaurant in Malibu. In 2012 Shoemaker earned the “Top Newcomer” award for Savory. Juicy Lucy, which officially opened its doors to the public on Jan. 8, is Shoemaker’s first solo endeavor. Juicy Lucy is located at 735 S. Figueroa St., Suite #120, Los Angeles. For hours and more information call (213) 683-1030, or visit thejuicylucy.com.

VINE CREATES BUZZ IN SOCIAL MEDIA APP WORLD Twitter’s new mobile app encourages users to get creative with videos. BY NICKI SPENCER

18

Campus Circle 3.14.13 - 3.27.13

with his Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bill Cosby impersonations. Some of his most admired posts are the “Word Repeat With My Adorable Italian Mother” videos, which feature him saying a word like “Whoopi Goldberg” followed by a video of his mother attempting to say the same word with her thick Italian accent. Clever and humorous videos such as this truly show what can be done in just six seconds. Another popular and highly followed Vine user is Brittany Furlan, who makes comical videos using her two dogs as characters, often ending posts with her signature line, “Puuurfect.” What’s interesting about Furlan is that she uses recurring motifs, characters and ideas in her posts, making her Vines work individually and as a part of a greater whole. It’s almost as if her six seconds can tie together into one giant Vine featuring her amusing perspective of life in L.A. Overall, Vine goes a step beyond Instagram by permitting users to share short films rather than images, which allows more dynamic elements, such as movements and sounds, to play a bigger role in creativity. Because of this, people are making wellchoreographed glimpses of comical, heartwarming, beautiful, tragic and magical moments of life that they can easily share with others.

WHY YOU SHOULD GET VINE 1. It’s Easy – It is extremely easy to create a Vine account, especially if you already have a Twitter account. Once your account is made, using the app’s features requires knowing how to press a button. Think you can handle that? 2. It Spurs Creativity – Once you start your Vine account, you will start to see the world in a more artistic way. You will start to look at things with a more critical and artistic perspective and wonder, “How could I make this into an interesting Vine?” 3. It Adds Color to Your Social Media Image – If you are trying to increase your social media following, Vine allows you more opportunities to capture people’s attention. 4. It’s Entertaining – Viewing other people’s videos is one of the best things about the app. It allows you to follow people you like, find hashtags and view the most popular videos of the day.

vine.co

What can you do in six seconds? For most people, six seconds is not enough time to do anything that interesting. You can take a sip of coffee, sneeze or scratch your nose, but it doesn’t get any more fascinating than that. However, in just six seconds, artist Marlo Meekins can seductively cut off her tank top and reveal… her dog underneath it. Will Sasso can walk around Canada impersonating Bill Cosby. And Crusoe Dachshund, the Weiner dog, can make a gourmet pizza. How can they do all that in such a short amount of time? Well, they have some help from Twitter’s new video app called Vine, which allows users to create six-second long video clips. Similar to Twitter, which limits the number of characters people can write, Vine’s limitations are also meant to heighten and fuel creativity. At first, six seconds sounds like an outrageous challenge. However, after trying the app and seeing how it works, the time limit mark becomes fathomable and an exciting challenge. With the app, people are already generating truly artistic, provocative and stimulating videos, some of which should belong in museum galleries. However, when Vine first launched in January 2013, it quickly received criticism for having loose guidelines regarding inappropriate or pornographic content. Apple’s App Store guidelines prohibit applications that allow users to easily access pornographic user-generated content, so Vine had to do something about the problem. Now, the company has added a 17-andolder rating and disabled easy searches for keywords like “#porn” or “#peniscloseup.” Users can also flag a video for being inappropriate, and Vine will analyze the video and the user. In addition, videos with explicit sexual or violent content will have a warning to alert users before they view the videos. Ultimately, the workers behind Vine seem to have done a thorough job to tackle this issue; however, criticism from parents and groups still ensues. Despite criticism involving censorship and explicit material, Vine is growing in popularity amongst Twitter followers. The app has a very simple and inviting interface, so it is very user friendly. There is only one button needed to record a video, and there are no fancy editing devices to allow users to add different filters. Even if you have never made a video, Vine makes the technical process very easy to learn. The true potential of Vine, however, is in the ideas and creativity of its users. For instance, Vine’s capabilities are already being explored by some of its aficionados like actor Will Sasso. Sasso constantly makes the “Popular Now” list

Vine lets you make six-second videos and post them on your Twitter for friends and followers to see.

5. It’s Fun – Ultimately, making short videos with your friend, dog, cat, food, hand, car, etc. is very fun and will get you laughing.

THE WORLD’S FIRST 3D PEN DOODLES ITS WAY INTO HEARTS

Maxwell Bogue and Peter Dilworth are the founders of WobbleWorks and the minds behind the 3Doodler. You can make your drawings stand up on their own with the 3Doodler.

The 3Doodler is a revolutionary pen, allowing you to create 3D drawings.

BY ALISA DWYER

Whether you’re an artist getting your MFA or an engineer with a knack for crafty Pinterest endeavors, there’s no doubt you’re going to be intrigued by the new toy that is transforming 3D printing. Touted as the world’s first 3D printing pen, 3Doodler promises to erase traditional 3D printing and give the user complete control, all in the palm of their hand. 3Doodler first caught the attention of investors on Kickstarter, a crowd-funding website for creative projects. Within just a few hours of launching on Feb. 19, they raised over their goal of $30,000. Since then, 3Doodler has garnered the backing of more than 20,000 investors, reaching almost $2 million to date. So what exactly does this little famed pen actually do? It allows users a unique level of precision for drawing in the air or as 3D “ink” on paper. “As 3Doodler draws, it extrudes heated plastic, which quickly cools and solidifies into a strong stable structure,” states the 3Doodler Kickstarter page. This allows the user to create virtually anything they want. They’re also in the process of creating stencils for the pen, which can be downloaded on the website and printed free of charge. These stencils will allow novice 3Doodler users to easily create just about anything their heart desires. Campus Circle had a chance to talk to Maxwell Bogue and Peter Dilworth, the founders of WobbleWorks and the men behind the creative genius of the 3Doodler. They spoke about the success of their new product and where they see themselves going in the future.

www.CampusCircle.com

The 3Doodler is an innovative invention for anyone who loves art. Campus Circle: Where did the idea for the 3Doodler pen come from? How is it going to revolutionize 3D printing? Max Bouge and Pete Dilworth: The idea came about as we frequently use our own 3D printers for rapid prototyping. We wanted to see if the process could be sped up and made “freer” by placing the parts of the 3D printer in a pen form. The first iteration was called the teacup, basically an extruder with a handle. It worked horribly, but it did work. The team then added to this, creating a unique cooling mechanism and evolving to the 3Doodler you see today. WobbleWorks is an emerging toy and robotics company with big ideas. Our mission is to create affordable, cutting edge toys and robots that inspire and delight our customers the world over. Because of the price of 3Doodler, it revolutionizes 3D printing by making it affordable for everyone. CC: What are your future hopes for this product? What parts would you like to expand upon, and do you see any similar products in the future for WobbleWorks? M&P: We’re super committed to bringing the 3Doodler to production, and the company’s focus is squarely on that right now. The company does have other products that will be coming to market this year, but most of these will go down the traditional toy distribution channels. 3Doodler is a very different animal, so expect to see a lot more from the team as we refine and add to it. CC: What is your target demographic for the 3Doodler?

M&P: 3Doodler is for crafts, 3D print enthusiasts, artists, hobbyists...anyone who likes Doodling – novices and advanced. CC: When can we expect to see this product on the market? M&P: The Kickstarter process is pretty consuming, and we are very much focused on delivering a good experience and good product to our backers. Theirs will be the first products shipped, followed by 3Doodler site pre-orders and then wider sales channels. We will start to look at wider distribution after the Kickstarter ends. CC: Can you explain a little bit more about your partnership with Etsy artists? M&P: We really wanted to show people that 3Doodler is not just a tool for 3D printing enthusiasts, but also for artists, crafters and hobbyists. The team all knows and loves Etsy, so it seems the obvious place to look. We immediately started to search for wire artists, as this was the medium that seemed closest in end-product look and feel to our own 3Doodles. We then spent some time narrowing down the group to those whose work we really liked and felt could be easily adapted to 3Doodling. With a short-list of eight to 10, we started approaching the artists. Amazingly, the top five jumped at the chance to learn more. 3Doodler is expected to start shipping by September 2013. You can pre-order your 3Doodler now on the Kickstarter page: http://kck.st/V9zFjX Campus Circle 3.14.13 - 3.27.13

NATALIE DREYFUSS IS TOUGHER THAN SHE LOOKS “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” actress opens up about her real-life Black Swan experience,

BY SYDNEY CHAMPION

“Do you mind if we sit inside?” When Natalie Dreyfuss arrived at the Coffee Bean in Toluca Lake on a Saturday morning to meet me, that was the first thing the petite brunette said. Instead of sitting outside in the sunlight and slight chilliness, she was more comfortable inside the loud, halfway-crowded café. After finding a table, Dreyfuss, wearing a royal blue sweater and donning a champagne-coral colored watch, sat across from me, nibbled on a miniature muffin and talked. Dreyfuss plays Chloe on ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” Her character is a teenager who was sex-trafficked until Leo and Camille Boykewich take her in, making her Ben’s (played by Ken Baumann) adoptive sister. Prior to this show, Dreyfuss has scored smaller roles on programs like “Burn Notice,” “Rita Rocks” and “House M.D.” Being an actress wasn’t on Dreyfuss’ career list when she was younger, though; in fact, she detested the idea. “A friend of mine said, ‘Come take this acting class.’ I was like, ‘Ugh, no!’ I grew up here. My mom was in the business; my whole family is in the business,” said Dreyfuss. “I didn’t want to be a part of it…” Being a Hollywood actress was not something that Dreyfuss glamorized about even though many little girls do. However, she did share the same fantasy that other girls dream about: becoming a perfect ballerina. When she was 6 years old, Dreyfuss initially started out competing as an ice-skater for years until she found out she could do ballet, which was almost the same for her without “the ice, all the scary stuff and cold.” “I did that until I was about 15, and I moved to Pennsylvania, New York and lived all over the place dancing,” said the Los Angeles native. But living the ballerina lifestyle wasn’t all sugarplums and fairies for Dreyfuss – it was more like the psychological thriller/horror film Black Swan. “Dance was awful; I don’t even remember loving it,” she admitted. “I had a ton of injuries; we all did. We were dancing for crazy hours…I’m glad I’m not living the life of Black Swan any more. It was just a childhood dream, and when you really play it out, it’s more of a nightmare.” Living this nightmare meant subjecting Dreyfuss’ body to strenuous physical activity, which ultimately led to her injuring her Achilles’ tendon, ending her career as a ballet dancer. “At the time, it just felt like the biggest devastation,” she said. “I’d always done this, so I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I wasn’t in school, I didn’t have friends [in Los Angeles] any more…it was a really confusing time.” After her injury, Dreyfuss moved back to L.A. and tried to figure out what to do next. She

overcoming obstacles and her mom.

wasn’t in high school [she obtained her GED], and she felt as if she couldn’t relate to anyone her age. It was hard for her to make friends. Luckily, her mom was there and supported her through this tough transition. “My mom had been begging me for years to stop dancing, but there was no stopping me,” said Dreyfuss. “When I decided to come home from Philadelphia, she was so excited. She lost me early; I’m her only child, and I left at 14.” Her mom, Kathy, has worked in the wardrobe department for many TV shows such as “Dharma & Greg,” “CSI: Miami” and more. Being an only child with no siblings or father, Dreyfuss has a strong bond with her mom. “My mom is my entire immediate family: mom, dad, sisters, brothers,” she said. “When I’m not focused on acting or working, I’m with my mom.” Getting their nails done, being pampered – Dreyfuss and her mom love spending the day together doing girly, mother-daughter activities. “Most people love going on beautiful trips or hikes…that’s not me,” said Dreyfuss. “I don’t enjoy that stuff. I’m not a nature person.” (Hence, why she wanted to sit inside the café for this interview). She added, “Anytime we go shopping and buy something, and I look at it, it reminds me of my mom.” She picked up her wrist and looked at her Michael Kors watch. “I wear this watch every day…we went shopping for it two or three years ago. Every time I look at it, I remember that day [with her mom], and that’s what makes me love the watch.” With her mom’s support, Dreyfuss eventually figured out what she wanted to do after her ballet injury. First, she became a preschool teacher for a little while (“Teaching was really for my heart…it was amazing!”) and later decided she wanted to go back into the performing arts – just not ballet. She ended up taking that acting class with her friend and fell in love with the craft. “Dance was like: Every day, you’re trying to be something – this perfect mold of something you were never going to fit,” said Dreyfuss. “Acting is the opposite; the more you break the mold, the more unique you can be, the better you’re going to be. It was super freeing for me.” Needless to say, she is much more happier acting and considers her dance injury a “blessing” in disguise. Despite how delicate she might look and even though she might not be able to handle sunlight, Dreyfuss has endured and conquered challenges most 25-year-olds haven’t faced. Catch Natalie Dreyfuss on Season 5 of “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” which premieres on Monday, March 18 at 8/7c.

BEAUTY: FEATURES

FAST, EASY DIY BEAUTY TRICKS Learn how to look your absolute best without spending money on outside help.

You can create a “hair bow” by creating loops and placing bobby pins on the bottom of them. photos: Ann Au

BY ANN AU Make Your Eyebrows Suit Your Face The shape and length of your eyebrows can totally transform the rest of your face. First, find their perfect length. Your eyebrows should start at the area where you put a pencil up against your nose and connect straights with the inner corner of your eyes. Your eyebrows should end at your outermost eyelashes. Your brow arch can be found by angling the pencil from your nose across the center of your pupil. Once you’re done marking, map out those areas with a white pencil liner and start plucking! If your eyebrows are too short or need to be fuller, try an eyebrow enhancement kit like Urban Decay’s Brow Box ($29 at Sephora). It comes with two shades of brow powder, brow wax, a mini-angled brush and tweezers. Use the shades to fill in your eyebrows and the brush and tweezers to create the perfect length and arch. When you put the wax over the powder, it’ll help you keep that perfect shape all day long! Brighten Up Your Smile Achieving a white smile has never been easier. The only essential thing required to whiten your discolored teeth is the Plus White 5 Minute Speed Whitening System (around $10 at drugstores), which is all the rage in the YouTube beauty guru community. Not only it is affordable and easy to access, it is extremely simple to use. Dip-Dye Your Hair - Without Going to the Salon This funky trend is featured on a lot of celebrities (Nicki Minaj, Drew Barrymore, Katy Perry, etc.) during the summer. Luckily, you can do a version of this at home.

If you dye your hair often, you probably already own the basic equipment: gloves, plastic bag, plastic bowl and brush. The only extra thing you may need is hair bleach, which you will apply to the bottom 3 inches of your hair. And of course, you need the color of your choice for the hair tips. To dive into this vibrant and vivid hair trend, grab a Splat Complete Color Kit, which is available at pretty much any drug store, and proceed: 1. Braid your hair with an elastic band, and leave the ends of your hair unbraided. The length of how much hair you leave out depends on how much hair you want to dip-dye. 2. Get ready to bleach the ends of your hair (the parts that are not braided). Note that this is an optional step; the hair dye can still be put on even if you don’t bleach your hair. However, the color will not be as bright. 3. Put on your gloves, and cover the ends of your hair in bleach. Leave it on for about 45 minutes to an hour. 4. Next, rinse the bleach out, and wash your hair with shampoo. 5. Dry your hair with a hairdryer. 6. Squeeze an appropriate amount of hair dye onto the ends of your hair. Spread the dye evenly, and make sure the part you want to dye is entirely covered.

your hair. Lastly, take the braids out. You now have the same colorful hairstyle that many celebrities have! Try a Hair Bow Half Up-Do Again, you don’t need to go to a hair salon or pay a bunch of money to get this hair-do. The Hair Bow Half Up-Do is perfect for a date night. It’s sweet, romantic and innovative. Plus, you don’t need that many tools – just bobby pins and elastic bands: 1. Grab two sections at the front of your hair. 2. Pull them back towards the back of your head, and bring them together into one section. 3. Then, you are going to almost create a ponytail. However, when you are on your last round of wrapping the elastic around your hair, keep the ends tucked under the elastic. That will leave you a little loop. 4. Once you have your little loop, split the loop in half to create two separate loops. Twist one of the loops sideways, and then use your fingers to spread it out as dramatic as you would like it to be, resulting in a half bow-like shape. 5. This is when you will need to use bobby pins. Secure the bow to your head by slipping a few of these pins at the bottom of the bow.

7. Leave it on for a half an hour if you want the color to stay in for at least a couple of months.

6. Repeat these steps for the other loop.

8. After the half hour is up, rinse out the dye and blow-dry

Ta-da! You now have a classic bow. Campus Circle 3.14.13 - 3.27.13

SPRING BREAK: FASHION

DIVE INSIDE THE WORLD OF FASHION AT SIMPLY STYLIST Whitney Port, Brad Goreski and more will be at L.A. Fashion Week’s most exclusive event. BY NEHA SHAIDA

The last 30-minutes of the networking lunch is a meet and greet, giving attendees the opportunity to make those vital connections. Overall, Simply Stylist gives each guest the chance to enter the world of fashion with the people who shape it. Incorporating fashion tips and tricks, networking in the industry and shopping, this event has everything for anyone who loves fashion. Get to Know the Fashionable Sarah Pollack Boyd: Campus Circle: What’s your favorite look right now? Sarah Pollack Boyd: I always love the classic look, lots of neutrals. But I’m loving the pops of neon I’m seeing everywhere. I like to keep a pop of color but am normally in neutrals. CC: Who are your favorite designers right now? SPB: I really like Rebecca Minkoff; she always has really cute stuff for shoes. I’m always getting Michael Kors…all the simplicity, I love. My newest jewelry find is Capwell & Co.; they have great affordable statement items.

Distinguished style experts, fashions most renowned bloggers, designers and famous faces are just some of the guests set to be at Simply Stylist during Los Angeles Fashion Week. Founded by Sarah Pollack Boyd in 2009, Simply Stylist connects the average shopper to designers, stylists and editors in the fashion industry during a fashion panel and shopping event. The hand-selected fashion panelists this year include designer and former “The Hills” star Whitney Port, celebrity stylist Brad Goreski, blogger Aimee Song, style expert Louise Roe, and E!’s Catt Sadler, who will be hosting the event. This Simply Stylist panel represents every side of the fashion industry. Goreski, who is also a TV personality, has a show on Bravo called “It’s a Brad, Brad World,” and he has styled everyone from Jessica Alba to Rashida Jones. Then, there is Aimee Song. Song has a successful fashion blog, “Song of Style,” which has an audience of more than 750,000 followers, and she has partnered with brands such as Macy’s and Levi’s. “The goal is showcasing the behind-the-scenes talents and experts, to help women who love fashion and beauty learn trends directly from the experts or get their foot in the door,” said Boyd in a recent interview with Campus Circle. With a background in fashion public relations, Boyd first came up with the idea for Simply Stylist when, after nine years in the industry and working with other fashion mavens, she realized people would really be interested in learning how the celebrities dress directly from the people that dress them. “I thought: I’m onto something to here,” she said. “A year later, I left my job fully and focused on Simply Stylist. March, last year, was our first full-scale event…it was expanded to 300 people, five experts, a host, a shopping event and networking lunch – a whole day of fashion.” This year’s Simply Stylist event will begin with an introduction of the panelists, and they will give advice, share how they made it into the fashion industry and answer questions. The next part of the event will involve discussing fashion trends. The panelists will talk about how to incorporate trends into each individual’s personal wardrobe. After the panel discussions, the attendees will then have the opportunity to join in an exclusive shopping event that features designer labels sold at discounted prices. They will get to sip on 100-calorie cocktails, indulge in manicures and speak with an on-site stylist during this shopping portion. There is also a networking portion at the event that allows the attendees to network with the on-site experts and experience priceless face-to-face interaction with fashion A-listers. “A lot of attendees come just to network. Living in L.A., it’s really hard to a) make friends, and b) network with the right people. It takes a lot of time,” said Boyd.
