FILM: INTERVIEW Milla Jovovich is gearing up to kick butt on the big screen once again in Resident Evil: Retribution.

Milla Jovovich Jovovich opens up about Resident Evil: Retribution, her music, and what it’s like being on set with her

BY NICK GOLDEN Actress, model and singer Milla Jovovich first came onto the scene in 1987, when she began modeling. Not long after that, she scored her first movie role in Return to the Black Lagoon. Over the next 15 years, Jovovich grew to become one of the most well-known action movie stars of today, partly due to her portrayal of Leeloo in The Fifth Element. Between her hectic filming schedules, Jovovich also managed to release a full length CD, The Divine Comedy, and continue to pursue an active modeling career. She has starred in quite a few comedies and dramas as well, alongside such big names as Adrien Brody, Robert DeNiro and Robert Downey Jr. However, she is perhaps best known for her role as Alice, the ass-kicking zombie killer in Resident Evil and its three sequels. Now, the fifth film in the series, Resident Evil: Retribution, has been shot, and is in post-production, being prepped for its September release. Jovovich takes some time out of her busy schedule to sit down with Campus Circle. Campus Circle: What’s different about Resident Evil: Retribution? What does it offer that the other films haven’t? Milla Jovovich: I think it’s just this epic movie. We’ve gone through so many different locations, and we’ve brought in so many different cultures and so many different continents. Just aesthetically speaking, we’ve got so many different set pieces and stunts, and the stunt sequences are so much bigger. And of course, for me, now, to do stunts, I have to up the ante every time because, you know, been there, done that. I have to do something I’ve never done before! But I think also, the script is really different from the other ones. CC: You can see in the teaser trailer that it looks very different. MJ: It takes you on this journey where you never really know what’s real, what isn’t real, what’s going to happen next, who’s a friend, who’s an enemy. So you really have that tension in the movie where it really takes you by surprise. It’s almost like a page-turner! You don’t really know what’s going to happen next! CC: The movie’s tagline is “Evil Goes Global.” Can you tell me what that means?

4-year-old daughter. MJ: Well, this time around, we really attack some major cities and destroy them.

MJ: Yeah, it’s definitely gotten a lot more electro, but it’s like African-electro, sex -beat music.

CC: In true Resident Evil fashion! MJ: It’s cool, because in the last movie we nuked Japan. That was awesome, so we decided in this one, it would be great to just bring in different cultures and take their most wonderful monuments and destroy them. (Laughs) It’s funny because there’s a twist to it. It’s definitely global, but the way we go global is very interesting. You’d have to see the movie to understand exactly what’s going on because it’s a very cool concept.

CC: So can we expect a full-length album? MJ: I think an E.P. would be safe to say. We’ve got eight songs right now that are in production, and one that is as close to being mixed as possible to shoot a video. We literally were mixing yesterday, and now it’s just listening for the next few days to see if that’s the right direction.

CC: The fourth film, Resident Evil: Afterlife, looked amazing in 3D. How does this movie compare? MJ: Oh, this blows it away. It’s almost like Afterlife was [director] Paul [W.S. Anderson] getting his feet wet, and then we did The Three Musketeers, [and] it was gorgeous. He really was able to take the 3D and do things that we’ve never seen a 3D camera do for a period piece. To take all that experience into this film, he was just so much more confident with the way he would set up the shot because now, you’re not just talking about right to left. You’re talking about back to front and what’s in between. There’s a lot of components to making a good 3D movie that doesn’t give you a headache! CC: Departing a little bit from Resident Evil, let’s talk about the music that you’re working on. You’ve said on Twitter you’ve decided to do a video for a song entitled “Wake Me Up.” MJ: I was thinking about doing it to “Wake Me Up,” but now we just did another song that I think might be better. It’s been like, “How am I reintroducing myself to people as a musician?” CC: It has been a while since your last CD, The Divine Comedy. MJ: Yeah, I’ve done stuff in between, collaborating with people, but this is the first thing I’ve done just as me. Obviously, people aren’t expecting me to just come out with a mandolin. (Laughs) Do you know what I mean? I definitely did that when I was 17, but, um... CC: Well, you’ve done some more electronic music.

CC: What is it like with your daughter Ever being on movie sets now? Is everyone receptive? MJ: Oh, yeah! Especially on a Resident Evil movie because it is momma and papa’s movie in a sense. I did another film that was indie, and I tried to bring my daughter and they were like, “It’s not safe!” But it was like, “Dude, my daughter knows her way around a set. Don’t worry about it!” But whatever, they were scared. CC: So the Resident Evil: Retribution set is more familyoriented? MJ: Well, in the sense of like, what are they going you say? You know what I mean? It’s our daughter, and she does know how to get around a set. She knows when they say “action,” you can’t talk, and when they say “cut,” you can start talking again! And she knows, there’s no running because it’s dangerous, and the set is not a playground –it’s a dangerous place. Here is your area, with mats. Here’s a couple of zombies for you to play with... (Laughs) I’ve got probably one of the least fearful 4-year-olds. She’s definitely not scared of monsters under her bed. CC: She’s fearless like her mom! MJ: She sees them make the monsters –right there in the makeup trailer. CC: So, nothing to be afraid of! MJ: (Laughs) Yeah. Milla Jovovich stars in Resident Evil: Retribution, in theaters September 14.

Catching Up with

The pop sensation dishes on her sudden rise in popularity and working with Justin Bieber. By Gabrielle Olya

www.CampusCircle.com

If you haven’t heard of Carly Rae Jepsen yet, you should probably YouTube “Call Me Maybe” immediately –and just try not to listen to it 20 times in a row. The Canadian singer and songwriter reached seemingly overnight success when Justin Bieber released a YouTube video of him and his pals – including girlfriend Selena Gomez and Disney starlet Ashley Tisdale – lip synching along with Jepsen’s infectiously pop-y hit. The video racked up a million views in 24 hours, and it now has more than 28 million views. Jepsen, who was already a noted singer in her native country after placing third on “Canadian Idol,” was shocked when she first saw the video. “I found it hard to believe at first,” she says. “I was home in Canada and someone had posted it on my Facebook, and as I was watching it I remember thinking, ‘That boy looks a lot like Justin Bieber.’ I kind of squealed like a 13-year-old, and just had to collect myself. It’s still very surreal.” The 26-year-old still remains humble despite the fact that “Call Me Maybe” has been certified double-platinum in Canada, where it also reached the top of the charts. “I am still kind of floored by [the song’s success],” Jepsen admits. “When you begin a song on tour with one of your pals, and it turns into something that’s heard in cities you’ve never even traveled to before, it’s hard to believe.” She attributes much of the song’s popularity to Bieber’s promotion of it. “I think of a lot of what’s generated awareness has been

the support of Justin [Bieber],” notes the singer. “I don’t really know how it has the success it has had, but I’m very grateful and very happy about that.” Jepsen has since met Bieber, and their introduction led to a spontaneous creative collaboration. “When I met him for the first time ever, he kind of just threw [a song] at me, and told me that if I wanted to sing on it, I could sing that night; seconds later I was thrown into the booth and away we went,” says Jepsen, who describes the resulting duet as “really beautiful.” When asked about the experience of working with Bieber, she replies, “It was nerve-wracking to say the least. I was petrified that no sound would escape, but I think it came out well. It’s moments like that that you just can’t let your nerves overtake you, otherwise you’ll miss the moment.” While there are no set plans regarding the duet’s release as of yet, fans can catch Jepsen singing some of her other tunes when she performs at 5Towers at Universal CityWalk in L.A. on Saturday, April 14. “I’m actually on a radio tour right now, and I’ve been singing ‘Call Me Maybe’ like eight times a day, so I’m really looking forward to singing some other songs!” exclaims Jepsen. “It will be fun to do an entire set of music again.” Carly Rae Jepsen will be performing a free concert at 5Towers at Universal CityWalk on April 14 at 9 p.m. To find out more about Jepsen, visit carlyraemusic.com.

MUSIC: FESTIVALS Jay L. Clendenin/Los Angeles Times/MCT

The Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival will take place at the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio, California, the next two weekends.

A new spirit in the desert for

a l l e h c a o C

By Randall Roberts LOS ANGELES TIMES (MCT)

LOS ANGELES — Those of us who attended Coachella in 2010 understand the reasons why the annual music and arts festival had to change. Two years ago, the three-day concert in Indio, Calif., was so overcrowded with sun-baked, drunken revelers that many of those in attendance vowed to not return. And if you were lucky enough to have access to the VIP area, it was so packed that many under that giant canopy felt more claustrophobic than important. This year? The festival, which begins Friday and features headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Radiohead and the Black Keys, has thankfully reduced the number of tickets for sale (a smart move implemented in 2011 by the promoter, the AEG-owned Goldenvoice) and — for the first time in its 13-year history — expanded from one weekend to two. In doing so, this pinnacle of cutting-edge, outdoor concerts has the potential to not only prove enjoyable again but also to morph into a much larger cultural event. By keeping top talent and fans in or around the vicinity for nearly two weeks, the festival will expand on its role as a trend-setter both musically and culturally, and other festival promoters will certainly be paying attention, especially since Goldenvoice recently purchased 280 acres of land at the festival site. This new Coachella model, which reveals a strategy by Goldenvoice to virtually own the springtime rock and electronic dance music season in Southern California, does come with some risk. The charm and eclectic nature of the festival could quite easily be crushed under too much of everything, including additional Goldenvoice gigs in between (and on either side of) the weekends featuring various Coachella performers. Still, the festival’s roster encompasses 120-plus artists representing some of the best popular music and emerging subgenres out there in a less-crowded setting. That potential alone is enough to make up for the problems of the past. Here’s a sampling: —Fading into view One of the most anticipated performances of 2012 will be by the beguiling Los Angeles group Mazzy Star, which reformed last year and is on the verge of releasing its long awaited follow-up to 1996’s “Among My Swan.” The duo of Hope Sandoval and David Roback (who now lives in Norway) have roots in Los Angeles music stretching back 30 years. The two formed Mazzy Star in the late 1980s and broke into the mainstream with “Fade Into You” in 1993,

8

Campus Circle 4.12.12 – 4.25.12

but had been completely silent until they released the fantastic return-to-form double-sided single “Common Burn” and “Lay Myself Down” in the fall of 2011. According to Sandoval in interviews, the group had never really broken up, but had merely taken a (long) break. This will be among the group’s first live performances in more than a decade and will also feature original members Keith Mitchell a nd Suki Ewers; the band began winding its way down the West Coast earlier this month, starting in Petaluma, Calif., on April 6.

—The kings of rock Over the course of seven albums, the Akron, Ohio, duo the Black Keys has gradually — and with much elbow grease — become one of the best flat-out rock and/ or roll bands in the country. The Keys are a solid, confident group that draws from Captain Beefheart and the Beatles with equal aplomb. Their newest album, “El Camino,” entered the Billboard album charts at No. 1 and, perhaps more important from a commercial perspective in 2012, contains some of the most licensed-for-advertising music of the year. Live, the band expands to a full rock outfit, and the resulting pummel is as steady and relentless as it is catchy. —Mixtape master Few performers have attracted as much buzz and critical adoration in the last year as Toronto producer and R&B artist the Weeknd. His three free mixtapes became the talk of 2011 and his work with rapper Drake has resulted in the kind of buzz money can’t buy. The brainchild of an elusive producer named Abel Tesfaye, the Weeknd offers a mix of hip-hop rhythms and smooth R&B bumps, then combines it with indie rock’s love of the loud-quiet-loud dynamic. The result is bridge-building music that connects many disparate subgenres under one umbrella. —For the common people Coachella is a festival whose attention to history is laudable, a reflex that finds purchase in the astounding reunions it books — and facilitates. This year, fans are giddy about the return of Brit-pop dandies Pulp, whose lead singer, Jarvis Cocker, is one of the most charismatic frontmen in rock, and whose anthemic inclinations have created amazing sing-along moments. Few performances will be more anticipated than Pulp’s of “Common People,” one of the

great songs of the 1990s. Other notable returns: Swedish hard-core band the Refused, whose reunion after a 14-year hiatus should have pit-bouncers nervous; Los Angeles post-punk group Firehose; and Montreal instrumental band Godspeed! You Black Emperor. —The real deal? One of the unlikely hits of 2012, Australian singer Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” is a sticky minimal pop song with a melody that transcends oceans. You’ve heard it even if you don’t know it. His sets at Coachella should go a long way toward predicting whether he’s the real deal or a one-hit wonder. The same could be said about a number of acts on the bill, including Justice, Calvin Harris and Martin Solveig, all of whom are looking to harness their hit tracks of days past toward continued glory. —Not quite J.D. Salinger Few would have predicted that Jeff Mangum’s 1990s band Neutral Milk Hotel would have as influential an afterlife as it has. After releasing two psychedelic indie pop classics, Mangum vanished for a decade while the myth and importance of his work gradually expanded. Though some were worried that he’d end up rock’s version of J.D. Salinger, his 2010 return overjoyed his obsessive fans, many of whom will be making the trek to the desert to see his first appearances on this coast since Neutral Milk’s first go-round in the ‘90s. —Power talker The hip-hop roster at this year’s festival is impressive and features not only Southern California kings Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre but also a reunion of influential late 1990s underground New York duo Company Flow, trippy instrumental music from beat producer araabMUZIK, as well as the king of instrumental hip-hop, DJ Shadow. But it’s the upstarts that are drawing the most pre-fest enthusiasm, most notably the New York rapper Azealia Banks, whose breakout hit “212” set the bloggers slobbering and the major labels kicking at her door. The 20-year-old, who’s whip smart with rhymes and has great taste in avant producers, has signed with Interscope and is working on her debut. The question is whether she can back up her singles with a full album of bangers. ©2012, The Los Angeles Times. Distributed by McClatchy-Tribune Information Services.

MUSIC Dan Stephens, Joel Ray and singer Alana Watson electrify crowds with their infectious house beats.

Five Questions with Nero

Universal Music/Interscope

The British-born producers, remixers, DJs and artists, Dan Stephens and Joel Ray, give us a preview of their upcoming tour. BY GABRIELLE OLYA Britain’s premiere dubstep duo Nero burst onto the electronic dance music scene in full force with the release of their 2011 album, Welcome to Reality. The L.P. features beat-heavy tracks that blend booming bass, house music and guitar riffs with sweet-sounding vocals. Songs like “Promises,” “My Eyes” and “Reaching Out,” are impossible to listen to without getting immersed in the music. Following the success of their album’s release in December, Dan Stephens and Joe Ray are taking their show on the road, headlining the “Second Reality” LIVE tour, which also features German electronic dance producer and DJ Zedd. The tour will soon be making stops in SoCal, including both weekends of Coachella and a show at L.A.’s Club Nokia on April 19.

Campus Circle: What was the vibe or feeling you most wanted to convey with your Welcome to Reality album? Nero: Kind of a dark, post apocalyptic Vangelis vibe; romance in the ruins. CC: What’s your favorite track on the album? N: “Innocence.” It was our first single off the album, and it still feels central to the feel of the whole thing. CC: What is your favorite track to perform live? N: “Promises,” because it always gets the best reaction when Alana [Watson] goes out and sings it live. CC: You guys will be performing in a pretty inventive DJ booth

that includes old TV sets and an arcade machine. How did you come up with the concept for the elaborate stage set-up you will be using at the show? N: It came from an old graphic design we both loved. It felt like it suited the music. CC: Do you have any backstage traditions or things you do to get pumped up beforehand? N: A few rounds of Tiger Woods and some drinks! Catch Nero April 19 at Club Nokia, 800 W. Olympic Blvd. # 335, Los Angeles, CA. Tickets are $32-50 in advance, or $35 at the door. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit clubnokia.com/ eventdetail.php?id=35116.

Latino Bash Features Ivy Queen, Cosculluela, Plan B, Alexis & Fido By Marvin Vasquez Reggaeton keeps growing in popularity, so much so that this music genre has profoundly penetrated not only the Latin community in Los Angeles, but the music scene as a whole. SBS Entertainment is proudly presenting Latino 96.3’s Spring Break Bash on Saturday, April 14, at Universal CityWalk’s Gibson Amphitheatre. The show includes performances by Ivy Queen, Cosculluela, Alexis & Fido and Plan B. All are accomplished artists that have gained a successful career through the originality of their music. Now, they are uniting for one night of pure classic and modern reggaeton, which will surely make for a fascinating performance. So, what can the audience expect? Considered by many as a pioneer of the urban genre, Ivy Queen’s fiery demeanor on stage speaks to ladies everywhere. In her songs, this talented woman known as the Undisputed Queen of Reggaeton, writes and sings her lyrics from the heart and soul. Ever since day one of her incomparable career, she has based her repertoire on personal experiences. More often than not, the Latin Grammy nominee uses her songs to speak out against men: “Te He Querido, Te He Llorado” (I’ve Loved You, I’ve Cried For You) and “Que Lloren” (Let Them Cry) are prime examples of this. Two different duos – Alexis & Fido and Plan B – represent the

romantic aspect of reggaeton, while still maintaining the genre’s uptempo style. Consisting of Raúl Alexis Ortíz and Joel Martínez, Alexis & Fido are well known for their distinguished tunes, such as “Energia” (Energy), “Tiburón” (Shark), “5 Letras” (5 Letters) and “Bartender,” among many others. Plan B, on the other hand, sing about topics like infidelity, sex, love and relationships. Comprised of two cousins, Orlando Javier Valle Vega and Edwin Vázquez Vega, Plan B are known as the Duo of Sex for their spicy tracks and sexual lyrics. “Es Un Secreto” (It Is A Secret) and “Si No Le Contesto” (If I Don’t Answer) have been topping the charts almost everywhere due to their contagious

sounds and infectious lyrical themes. Both hits have solidified Plan B as an integral part of reggaeton. Last but not least, there is Cosculluela (José Fernando Cosculluela Suárez). This 31-year-old gained tremendous recognition over the last two years for the releases titled “Prrrum,” “Cuidau Au Au” and “Si Tu No Estas” (If You’re Not Here). Cosculluela’s 2011 album El Niño (The Boy) was one of the most anticipated releases of the year. To purchase tickets for Latino 96.3’s Spring Break Bash, visit livenation.com/event/0900485619C88163.

Delicious Japanese Cuisine That Won’t Break the Bank

Be sure to save room for dessert!

Miracle Mile’s Yuko Kitchen offers fresh and flavorful fare. By Gabrielle Olya

The chicken platter offers a lot of bang for your buck.

Tucked away on a side street off bustling Wilshire Boulevard, Yuko Kitchen serves up homecooked Japanese cuisine, a selection of desserts and unique beverages, including a wide variety of boba. The Miracle Mile eatery has been open for almost three years, and has become a neighborhood staple. Many of their patrons come in to get “their usual,” a clear sign that Yuko Kitchen serves the caliber of food that keeps people wanting to come back. The restaurant’s most popular dish is the chicken combination plate, a great choice for first time visitors as it offers a sampling of numerous menu items. For $9.75, the sizable platter includes teriyaki chicken (which can often be bland, but is remarkably flavorful here), rice, four pieces of their spicy tuna roll, salad with a tangy-spicy Asian dressing, a

shot of the soup of the day and a mini dessert. Another not-to-be-missed dish is the garlic albacore sashimi salad ($11.70), which comprises albacore tuna, rice, sautéed garlic, jalapenos, white onion and Kaiware sprouts served over a bed of mixed greens and topped with a ponzu sauce. While most salads are less-than-satisfying, this salad is served in a truly meal-sized portion that will satisfy not only with its size, but also with its delectable flavors, from the freshness of the albacore to the complementary punch added by the sautéed garlic. Boba lovers are sure to be pleased with the selection here, which includes strawberry soda, honey green tee, mango banana, Chai chocolate and more. Stop in between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. for their daily boba happy hour, and get any boba drink for just $3. If you’re looking for something truly refreshing, try their

Peanut Butter Cookies

Prep Time: 5 mins Cook Time: 10 mins Yield: About 2 dozen cookies

A tasty update to the traditional cookie, that happens to be gluten-free and vegan. By SEAN MICHAEL BEYER

As an added treat, place a small scoop of softened vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt in between two cooled cookies, and freeze for a couple of hours for a tasty ice cream sammich!

Campus Circle 4.12.12 – 4.25.12

Your typical peanut butter cookie recipe calls for a whole bunch of flour, sugar and eggs, which really weighs down the cookie, and certainly isn’t all that healthy. With this contemporary spin using puréed banana instead of eggs and no flour, the true taste of the peanut butter shines through, and go figure, it’s actually a lot healthier too.

Sean Michael Beyer

*Nutella and chocolate contain milk, which negates the vegan

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. While still in its container, place the honey into a small bowl of hot water to soften it. Put your peeled banana into a blender or food processor, and purée until smooth; OR toss into a large mixing bowl and with a potato masher, smush it up. Add into the mixing bowl the peanut butter, baking soda, vanilla, honey and sugar. Using a hand mixer on low or a large spoon, thoroughly stir to combine. If using chocolate chips or nuts, gently stir them in. Using a spoon, scoop out some cookie dough, then roll it into a ping-pong-sized ball and place onto a cookie sheet, preferably lined with parchment paper. If the dough is a little sticky, dip your fingers into some room temperature water before rolling into balls. Repeat for the rest of the cookies, placing them about an inch apart. For old-school cookies, using a fork dipped in water, make crosshatch marks across the top and flatten them out slightly. For thumbprint cookies, dip your thumb (or a finger) into some water, push down into the middle of the cookie, then fill with a 1/4 teaspoon of jelly, jam, Nutella or a chocolate kiss. Place into the oven for 10-12 minutes. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn. Once they’re done, place onto a rack to cool for about 10 minutes. Note: The cookies will be soft when they first come out of the oven; be sure not to disturb them until cool.

frozen mint lemonade, the perfect drink to savor on their outside patio under strings of fairy lights. Want to enjoy an adult beverage? You can forgo the usually marked-up bottle prices you often find at restaurants, because Yuko Kitchen is B.Y.O.B. after 6 p.m., a rarity in L.A. (Trust me, I’ve searched far and wide for every bring-your-own-bottle establishment in the city.) And don’t forget to leave room for dessert! All their offerings are prepared fresh on the premises, and their apple bread pudding and flourless chocolate cake – both served with homemade whipped cream – are sure to please any sweet tooth.

JOIN A WAREHOUSE CLUB. Sam’s Club and Costco routinely have the lowest gas prices in my neighborhood and you can get money back too if you belong to the appropriate membership level. Costco will let you use your American Express, unlike other cheap gas stations. And using a debit card at Sam’s Club doesn’t cost you like it does at Arco. Sam’s Club will let you use a Mastercard, too. (But no Visa)

in Iran and other factors designed to gouge us at the pump. But here are ways you can save regularly on your gas bill, even if you don’t want to buy a new hybrid or Smart Car.

CUT YOUR SPEED. This is the easiest way to dramatically reduce your gas bills. Just stop driving so fast. Driving 55 mph on the freeway instead of 65 is estimated to burn 15 percent less gas. And, no, people don’t hate you when you drive slowly on the freeway. They hate you when you drive slowly in the fast lanes. Just stay to the right and remember the parable of the tortoise and the hare. PAY CASH. Many gas stations will give you money off if you pay cash instead of using credit cards, so carry around some cash in your wallet. Arco stations are generally cheaper as well, because you can’t use credit, though you’ll have to pay 35-45 cents if you use your debit card.

price speculation over the tense situation

MAKE SURE YOUR TIRES ARE PROPERLY INFLATED. Underinflated tires will require more gas for your engine to push them along. USE GASBUDDY.COM. This site will show you the cheapest gas around you today in real time. STOP IDLING. You waste a lot of gas idling, so cut your engine if you’ll be stopped for more than a minute. The air we breathe will thank you, too. Idling wastes a quart of your gasoline every 15 minutes. You could even walk into the fast-food joint instead of doing the drive-through, in which case you’ll burn off 5 of the 2,000 calories you’re about to consume. EMPTY THE TRUNK. I just did this, after I nearly had a conniption fit at the gas pump. The EZ UP I’ve been carrying around and all that other junk in the trunk just went back in the garage where it belongs. There’s no reason to haul around extra stuff, it just sucks up your gas mileage.

SAVE 10 CENTS A GALLON WITH RALPHS AND KROGER POINTS. You can collect points on your Rewards cards at Ralphs, Lucky, Kroger and other grocery stores, and then use them to get the discount at participating gas stations. PLAN YOUR TRIPS. Think about what you need to do this week and organize your trips so you’ll drive less. Do errands clustered together geographically so that you do everything in the same neighborhood at once. ©2012 The Orange County Register (Santa Ana, Calif.) There are hundreds of photos, galleries and an interactive photography gear-check list, which is useful for any aspiring photographers.” While aimed at photographers and photographers-to-be, Shive explains that the app has a little something for everyone. “If you don’t aspire to be a photographer but love great images from the world’s wildest places, you’ll love it,” he says. “If you are looking to improve your photography or get pretty advanced with your outdoor photography skills, there’s a ‘how-to’ field guide that goes not only into the technical notes behind some of my best photos, but also goes deep into the thought-process of how I choose certain locations and compositions.” Shive became a professional photographer “very, very gradually.” “My interests have always been in the outdoors, and at first, I used to hike and backpack through all sorts of wonderful landscapes before I realized that I wanted to start sharing those experiences through my photographs,” he explains. He started out taking photographs as a hobby, and eventually turned it into a full-time career. “I’ve been to all 50 states and dozens of countries, and met hundreds of people, from ranchers in the American West to spear fisherman in Micronesia,” says Shive, reflecting on why he truly loves what he does. “Everyday is different. You can wake up and find out you are heading to the far side of Earth in a week. Where my day begins is never an indication of where it may end.” Shive is now sharing what he has learned, not only through the Ian Shive Photography App, but also as a teacher of photojournalism at the University of Southern California, a teacher he has

found very rewarding. Those not fortunate enough to enroll in Shive’s class can take away this piece of advice: “The most important rule of making great images is to use your camera to tell a story,” says Shive. “A pretty picture that doesn’t engage the imagination is a two dimensional image. A photograph that makes you want to know ‘What happened next?’ or ‘What’s around the next bend?’ is one that strikes our imagination and leads us into the story.” No matter what you aspire to do, Shive believes passion is an essential ingredient in success. “While I may have the greatest job around, it’s still a job and a business, and it’s important to remember that no matter what career path you take - whether it’s as a photographer or a lawyer - you must be passionate about what you do, otherwise you will always struggle to find happiness in your career.” Download Shive’s app on iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ian-shive/id508224749?mt=8.

CONTEST

WHERE IN L.A. AM I?

Tracking the fans of novels — from book to web to theaters By Katie Nieland, Chicago Tribune

Adaptations of popular books on the big screen are nothing new, but in recent years movie studios have looked to maximize ticket sales by targeting the established fan bases of popular teen and young adult book series. “The Hunger Games” book trilogy is a prime example; the first of four planned movies opened Friday, taking in a record $155 million in North America over the weekend. But while its legions of online fans look impressive when tallied, “The Hunger Games” has many more people to win over if it is to match the box office success of the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” franchises.

ADVANCE TICKET SALES SET RECORDS

Online movie ticket seller Fandango.com announced that “The Hunger Games” set a record for number of advance tickets sold on its site. Advance tickets were made available Feb. 22, and first-day purchases broke a record previously held by “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” By March 1 the overall record had been set, and on March 20 Fandango reported that 2,000 theaters sold out for the premiere.

Translating a fan base into money Fans of a book anticipate the movie adaptation, and the movie itself, if successful, creates new fans. Looking at sheer fan volume, the movies based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels did the best out of these four series: 43.2 million people “liked” it on Facebook, and the eight movies made $7.7 billion globally. If “The Hunger Games” hopes to make a similar splash for its first movie, the 3.04 million fans we tallied each would have to spend more than $300 at the theater to equal the first in the Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

ART: PHOTOGRAPHY

Herb Ritts: L.A. Style Photos Courtesty of: The Paul J. Getty Museum/Herb Ritts Foundation

“Cindy Crawford, Ferre 3, Malibu, 1993”

The late photographer’s nude and celebrity photographs are featured in a new book and exhibition. By Kristina Bravo Browsing through Herb Ritts: L.A. Style, we are transported through the iconic photographer’s nude and celebrity portraits to a glamorous past –a not so distant one, it being the ‘80s and ‘90s –but a past nonetheless. Sure, there are a crop of photographers today who make their livelihood by capturing images of naked bodies, but let’s face it –most verge on crass rather than class. Ritts’s nude photography, on the other hand, exudes that rare artistic panache. Think more nostalgic elegance, less ‘70s low-budget porn. Despite his successful career, Ritts wasn’t always on the path to become the legend that he is today. A Los Angeles native, Ritts worked as a sales representative for his parents’ lucrative furniture business after graduating from Palisades High School in 1970 and studying economics and art history at Bard College in New York. Although he excelled at being a salesman, Ritts lacked a proper outlet for his creative inclinations. So in 1976, he purchased a simple 35-mm camera and began to take portraits of his friends. As luck would have it, his pals were young actors, models and other artsy types who were all part of the Los Angeles scene. A legendary photographer was in the making. Raised in Brentwood with actor Steve McQueen as his nextdoor neighbor, Ritts was often in the company of celebrities. He knew how to make his subjects comfortable as he photographed them. “It’s not the celebrity quality of the person that makes the photograph interesting,” he said. “It’s letting the true person through that makes the photograph interesting and lasting.” Ritts’s reputation exploded when in 1979, his photograph of then budding actor Richard Gere appeared in Mademoiselle, Vogue and Esquire magazines. Clad in a simple white tank and a pair of jeans with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, the young, then

fairly unknown Are you actor suffering posed nonchalantly from Facebook in front fatigue? of a tattered car in a deserted gas station. Through this portrait, Hollywood gained a new American hero. Lacking formal training in photography, Ritts took some evening courses at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He then purchased a home in the Hollywood Hills where he roomed with top male fashion model Matt Collins. Ritts shot Collins for Harper’s Bazaar Italia under the Santa Monica Pier, producing a photograph that features what would later be known as his signature style: an ingenious use of the golden Southern California light and strong cast shadows. Soon, other magazine editors would take notice. His body of subjects went on to include high profile personalities like Madonna, Cindy Crawford and Michael Jackson. Not only did he become known as a prime celebrity and fashion photographer, he would also become a leading proponent of a new L.A. style. Recognizing the advantages of living in the city, he remarks, “Within two hours from where I live, you have mountains and deserts as locations. I like the natural elements that abstract into light, texture, shape and shadow.” Along with contemporaries Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce Weber, Ritts ignited a progressive change in male nude portraiture. He captured the male body from various angles, and abstracted it in ways that convey strength and poise. He used similar techniques in his fashion photography as well. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour comments that “Ritts wasn’t as interested in the clothes as he was in the texture of beautiful skin.” This, however, didn’t prevent him from flourishing in the industry. The iconic nude photograph of supermodels Stephanie

Seymore, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell all huddled together is still imprinted on the minds of fashion and non-fashion folks alike 23 years after it was originally taken. In 1989, the same year that Ritts took this renowned photograph, he was diagnosed with AIDS. This, however, only spurred his creativity as an artist. He began to direct music videos and commercials. Over the course of his career, he would produce 13 music videos for artists that include Mariah Carey, Britney Spears and Michael Jackson, and 15 commercials, including ads for Victoria’s Secret, Chanel and Calvin Klein. In December 2002, on what would be his last shoot, he photographed Ben Affleck in El Mirage, California for Vanity Fair. With wind blowing hard, stirring up an excessive amount of dust, Ritts developed pneumonia. A week later, on December 26, 2002, he died at the age of 50. Herb Ritts: L.A. Style, edited by Paul Martineau with an essay by James Crump ($59.95), is now available through Getty Publications. An exhibition, titled “Herb Ritts: L.A. Style,” will display the photographer’s iconic works at the Getty Center now through August 12, 2012. Campus Circle 3.29.12 – 4.11.12

SPORTS: FOOTBALL

2012 NFL DRAFT PROJECTIONS

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck will be a Top 10 pick for the Colts.

The Top 10 Nhat V. Meyer/San Jose Mercury News/MCT

1) Indianapolis Colts: QB Andrew Luck (Stanford) (6’4”, 235 lbs.) Even with the meteoric rise of Robert Griffin III, this pick has been inevitable for months. The Colts will select the most polished player in this year’s draft at the game’s most important position. They will need all the “luck” they can get filling Peyton Manning’s legendary shoes. 2) Washington Redskins (trade with Rams): QB Robert Griffin III (Baylor) (6’2”, 220 lbs.) The Redskins made one of the biggest trades in NFL history to move up from the No. 6 spot to grab the super-athletic Heismen Trophy-winner out of Baylor. There is no question these two signal callers go one and two. 3) Minnesota Vikings: LT Matt Khali (USC) (6’6”, 306 lbs.) The Vikings have a young quarterback in Christian Ponder, who they need to upright in a very tough division. Khali is considered as good as an offensive tackle as prospects get. Sounds like a match made in heaven for a team coming off a rough year.

By Seamus Smith 4) Cleveland Browns: RB Trent Richardson (Alabama) (5’11”, 220 lbs.) Mike Holmgren is not known for taking wide receivers high in the draft, but if Colt McCoy is to be their guy, he needs some playmakers. Although runningbacks seldom get selected in the Top 10 anymore, Richardson is too promising to pass up, and will take some of the weight off the passing game. 5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: CB Morris Claiborne (LSU) (6’, 188 lbs.) With current Bucs starters at the cornerback position either looking at prison time (Aqib Talib) or the end of a long career (Ronde Barber), Tampa Bay is in dire need. They are thrilled that a cover-man as talented as the Tiger’s Claiborne is theirs for the taking. 6) St. Louis Rams (trade with Redskins): WR Justin Blackmon (LSU) (6’1”, 211 lbs.) Jeff Fisher’s Rams look like geniuses after gaining two future firstrounders from Washington to move from the No. 2 spot, and still get the player they were targeting. Sam Bradford has good potential but needs a stud receiver to help him burn defenses. “Bradford to Blackmon” has a nice ring to it. 7) Jacksonville Jaguars: DE Melvin Ingram (South Carolina) (6’1”, 264 lbs.) The Jags’ greatest needs are receivers and pass rushers. Although

they may be tempted to reach for Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd, expect them to solve their defensive deficiency with their first selection. A defense cannot be elite without pressure on the quarterback, and Ingram will certainly bring that to the south.

8) Miami Dolphins: QB Ryan Tannehill (Texas A&M) (6’4”, 221 lbs.) After missing out on signing Manning, Matt Flynn or Alex Smith, the Dolphins must find an offensive leader behind center. Many consider using a Top 10 pick on Tannehill to be a stretch, but he has good raw skills, and Miami will hope his upside leads bring their Super Bowl aspirations to fruition. 9) Carolina Panthers: DT/NT Dontari Poe (Memphis) (6’4”, 346 lbs.) The Panthers are in serious need of help along their interior defensive line. No player’s stock has gone up more since the Combine than Poe’s. Showing amazing speed for his size, as well as great strength and footwork, look for Carolina to take a chance on this highly athletic tackle with so-so college production. 10) Buffalo Bills: OT Riley Reiff (Iowa) (6’5”, 313 lbs.) After signing Mario Williams and Mark Anderson to anchor the defensive line, the Bills can turn their focus to the opposite side. Buffalo could be next year’s dark horse in the AFC, and protecting Ryan Fitzpatrick’s blind side is an absolute must to edge out the Patriots in the east.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

IRENE YOUNG

The USC senior is a filmmaker, dancer and aspiring film editor. BY GABRIELLE OLYA

22

This is my fifth and last semester with them and I’m so sad! I think dance and film are pretty related – they’re both visual, creative expression. Over the years I’ve found that my directing style crosses over in both mediums. CC: What do you hope to do upon graduation? IY: My career goal is to be an editor. I’m following a few leads right now and am hoping to work at HBO this summer.

CC: Tell us about your latest film project. IY: My Mother’s Jade is an independent endeavor fueled by blood and sweat. It’s based on true events that transpired between my mom and I during my teen-angst years, and is a portrait of the cultural and generational conflicts that arise when an Asianminded parent tries to raise her child in a Western country. More specifically, it’s about white boyfriends, my mother’s favorite jade bracelet, and the night I broke her heart for the first time. I’ve made a lot of films as a student, and this is my first outside-of-USC passion project.

CC: What is your advice for other aspiring filmmakers? IY: “KEEP CALM AND PRE-PRODUCTION ON.” This was my mantra while working on My Mother’s Jade. The fact is, when you have so many different people collaborating on a project, things are going to go wrong – or at least, not the way you expect them to. The best thing you can do is do the best you can do! Don’t waste time trying to figure out why something went wrong or who’s at fault; instead, leave it behind immediately and look for a solution. Also, trusting in your crew is key. Filmmaking is about teamwork, and I always say, the film is just as much as their’s as it is your’s.

CC: What’s your passion outside of filmmaking? IY: I choreograph and dance with the USC Repertory Company.

CC: What’s the best thing about USC and the Trojan family? IY: The fact that we really are a family. My Mother’s Jade was

Campus Circle: What made you want to be a filmmaker? Irene Young: I’m an escapist. I love stealing away for two hours and immersing myself in something that is outside of my present reality – being able to feel the emotions of other people and experience events that haven’t really happened to me. I think I’m just a really sympathetic person! Also, in high school my boyfriend worked at the local movie theater, so we would go and see every movie that was playing.
