APPLE AIMS TO DOUBLE ITS MARKET WITH IPHONE 5 Regaining its fame as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, Apple is doubling the number of markets; the iPhone 5 will arrive in more than 50 additional countries on Dec. 14 and on Dec. 21. Currently available in 47 countries around the globe, including the United States, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan and the U.K., the iPhone 5 will be ready to use on Dec. 14 in more than 30 countries such as Albania, Brazil, Chile, Indonesia and Venezuela. On Dec.21, the iPhone 5 will also be accessible in an additional 20 countries such as Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Uganda and Vietnam. BOY SCOUTS’ RESISTANCE LED TO MORE SEX OFFENDERS ON STAFF The Boy Scouts of America’s resistance to background investigation of volunteers resulted in hundreds of child sex offenders joining the staff, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis. The Boy Scouts’ “perversion files,” which reveals hidden cases of child molesters, was exposed last month. Despite most youth organizations that conduct criminal background checks of their workers, The Boy Scouts opposed to this trend, stating that examinations are too costly and could prevent people to apply for possible positions. There are still four years to go until mandatory criminal background checks become part of The Boy Scouts’ staff ’s application process. Although he will not follow anyone, the pope is expected to engage in every post by approving or phrasing parts of tweets. For people who want to ask questions to the pope, they can use the hashtag “#askpontifex”; three to five questions will be selected among those to be answered by the pope. Use of social media by the Vatican has expanded through Facebook and Youtube to invite more young people to talk about faith. TIPS TO PREVENT THE GRINCH FROM STEALING CHRISTMAS Although it is the season of giving, it also happens to be the season of stealing. With the rise in popularity of Internet shopping and Cyber Monday, the number of packages stolen from front porches and yards has increased immensely across the country. To prevent your packages from being stolen, there are a couple of precautions you can take. First, know exactly when a package is being delivered and track it online. If it is impossible to know when a package will arrive, have a neighbor or friend look out for it or have it delivered to your place of work. Many companies also allow customers to pick up packages themselves or choose the sign-only delivery. And, of course, do not forget about the traditional shopping method in which you actually go inside a store and purchase gifts in person and deliver them in person.

UCLA TO PLAY BAYLOR IN HOLIDAY BOWL BY CHRIS FOSTER

LOS ANGELES TIMES (MCT)

UCLA does not get to go to the Rose Bowl, but the Bruins do get to stay home for bowl season. The Bruins will play Baylor in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego on Dec. 27. It will allow UCLA to scrub clean the 27-24 loss to Stanford in the Pac-12 championship game. That put the Cardinal into the Rose Bowl and the 17th-ranked Bruins in limbo. The Valero Alamo Bowl and Holiday Bowl were the two possible destinations. Players received the news that they were going to San Diego before UCLA’s season-ending banquet Sunday night. “I was interested to see what mood the seniors would be in coming off that tough loss and the disappointment of not going to the Rose Bowl,” coach Jim Mora said. “They were excited to get to play one more time together and play in the Holiday Bowl.” The Bruins, 9-4, were appealing to Holiday Bowl officials in part because of the Los Angeles television market. That UCLA fans could make an easy trek to the game was an added bonus. “I love the idea of staying in Southern California,” Mora said. “Our fans can come down and play one more time. It will give us great exposure.” And 15 more practices. “It’s like an additional spring practice,” Mora said. This is an upgrade for UCLA. The Bruins had become accustomed to bargain-bin bowl games in Las Vegas and San Francisco. The Holiday Bowl is their biggest bowl game since they played in the 1999 Rose Bowl. “The only thing we can control is on the field,” Mora said. “Beating Stanford and going to the Rose Bowl was the only thing we could control. We’re just excited to get another chance to play.” Mora began his NFL coaching career in San Diego as a Chargers assistant from 1985-91. He was an

NFL coach for 25 seasons, so getting one more game after a postseason loss to Stanford was new to him. “I had to adjust my thinking,” Mora said. “After that game, playing and losing, it will stay with you a long time. It felt like the end. I slowly came to realize that we’ve got another game to play. I got jacked up again.” He’d certainly better be to watch Baylor game tapes. The Bears are No. 1 in total offense nationally, averaging 578.8 yards per game. They are third in passing offense, averaging 353.3, and fifth in scoring offense, averaging 44.1 points per game. Baylor, which is 7-5, got into the bowl picture by winning its last three games, beginning with a 5224 victory over then-No. 1 Kansas State. It will be the second time this season that the Bruins will face a team that beat the No. 1 team in the nation. Stanford beat Oregon on Nov. 17. Mora said that facing a wide-open offense would not be new to the Bruins. “We have a lot of experience with that style of offense, given the fact that we have played teams like Arizona, Arizona State; USC opened up pretty well,” Mora said. Besides, he said, “we can win tight games, we can win wide-open games.” The Bruins and Bears have never met. Mora said he knew little about Baylor, beyond former Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III, last season’s Heisman Trophy winner. “He’s my son’s favorite college player last year,” Mora said. “That’s why he wears a Washington Redskins jersey around.” Nick Florence replaced Griffin and has thrown for 4,121 yards and 31 touchdowns. He has gained 531 yards rushing and rushed for nine touchdowns. ©2012 Los Angeles Times Distributed by MCT Information Services

DJ Dainjazone talks trap and LMFAO. BY KEVIN D. ROBERTSON

It isn’t that far back that house and hip-hop music sipped from different drinking fountains. But since music genres constantly experiment with the lights off, new subgenres are being birth into the word. Trap, with its proud papas like Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy, and house, with its producers like David Guetta and Deadmau5, conceived a new micro-genre: trap house, where “the streets” meets electronic beats. DJ Dainjazone is on a mission to make trap house the dubstep of 2013. “I never expect crowds to go crazy for trap,” said DJ Dainjazone. “Because it’s new all around well in the club scene, not to DJs.” In an interview with Campus Circle, he talked about his experience being electro-rap duo LMFAO’s tour DJ. Campus Circle: You’re touring with Party Rock Crew. Has that experience impacted your DJ-ing? DJ Dainjazone: Absolutely. I’ve learned a lot. It’s also made a bigger name for me. To be associated with Party Rock is a big thing. I started out this year doing well for myself, but once I jumped on tour with the guys, it really took off to another level. CC: In between the tour, you’ve been doing your own gigs. Are the experiences different spinning for Party Rock Crew versus your own gig?

DJ Dainjazone has toured with LMFAO in addition to doing his own gigs.

D: They are very different. With Party Rock, we have dancers, hype men; it’s a show. When I do something with Red Foo, it’s a show. You compare that with what I do, by myself, they’re like two different animals. I do what I can. I entertain and keep people dancing. CC: Tell me about B.R.I.T.T 1.5? D: B.R.I.T.T 1 was a mix of multiple genres. In 1.5 it’s all trap house, trap and hip-hop. It’s a limited delivery. That style is more popular now. I think it’s going to do well. CC: What’s your creative process like? D: There’s a lot of thinking involved. I don’t just want to put tracks back-to-back and let it be a regular mix. I want to add some scratches. I want to add some word play. I’m selective when it comes down to tracks I use for a mix. There’re a lot of mental blocks. I have to step away and step back into it. CC: Red Foo has a monthly party in Vegas. For anyone who hasn’t been, describe what it’s like? D: It’s the best party in the world at one of the best clubs in the world, Marquee. The decorations add to the atmosphere. The glow sticks, foam sticks, Party Rock foam fingers, confetti, lights, funnel shots, spraying people with champagne and pouring alcohol in people’s mouth - all these things add up. Combine that with the energy of Party Rock and Red Foo and his DJ set… Red Foo gets out there with his iPad. He’s dancing and DJ-ing, and he has three or four hype men dancing. It’s a show. Nima was free to make music as he pleased, but the bright lights of the looming Crowne Plaza hotel along with the buzzing noises of airplanes, shuttles and passers-by were 24-hour reminders of his restlessness. The experience caused Kazerouni to name his new band Crown Plaza and issue an eight-song E.P. called Chem Waves Volume 1, available now on cassette via label Vanity Project. STRUMMER’S MESCALEROS WORK REISSUED It’s been a decade now since the passing of punk legend Joe Strummer, and Hellcat Records has marked the sad anniversary by reissuing the three albums Strummer put out with the Mescaleros, the band he fronted after the demise of his previous outfit, the Clash. Fans can add quite a few previously unreleased tracks and hard to find B-sides by picking up the reissues. Rock Art and the X-Ray Style is now appended with three bonus cuts, including a live take on “The X-Ray Style” and a dub version of “Yalla Yalla.” Global A Go-Go includes a live version of “Bhindi Bhagee,” and the final Mescaleros release Streetcore now contains seven bonus live cuts, including songs Strummer originally cut with the Clash like “Pressure Drop” and “Armagideon Time.” All three titles are also available on vinyl. FILM: FEATURE Gregory Smith

On the Road stars Twilight princess, Kristen Stewart.

LIFE IS A HIGHWAY FOR THE ON THE ROAD CAST

The quest to find the perfect team and cast for the film was bumpy, but it was accomplished. BY MELISSA BOBBITT Talk about getting into character. Director Walter Salles and actor Garrett Hedlund, in prepping for the theatrical version of Jack Kerouac’s beat classic On the Road, hopped into a classic car from that era and sped across the United States in search of a journey. Well, “sped” was more like putted, and the “journey” turned out to be finding an auto body shop. The ‘49 Hudson broke down numerous times on desolate highways in the Southwest. There were so many fits and starts - just like the production of this film. The movie, which also stars Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame, Sam Riley, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst and Elisabeth Moss, was percolating in the minds of numerous Hollywood players ever since Kerouac published the beloved work in 1957. (The novel itself went through a half-dozen reiterations, excising the names of the author’s real-life cohorts such as Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg, typed on an epic, biblical scroll.) The quest to find the right Dean Moriarty, that freewheeling Mephistopheles always looking for “kicks” character, concluded with a gripping audition by Hedlund. On board with the project since 2007, the star of TRON: Legacy was unafraid to go too far with the character, his pith best on display during the scene in a Mexican whorehouse in which Moriarty is crazily consumed with a mambo beat. He’s perspiring, swirling and looking about ready to burst like a roman candle – as Kerouac eloquently put it in the novel. Hedlund’s not playing Dean Moriarty; he is him in that moment. “The yearning for adventure, especially for me growing up in such a small town in the middle of nowhere, [and] the

www.CampusCircle.com

desire to be away was incredible,” Hedlund said of taking on the challenging role. “The yearning to live, be on your own and journey – these guys were able to do that.” Salles, known for his wanderlust masterpiece The Motorcycle Diaries, was the ultimate choice to helm this fabled work, approved by film-rights holder Francis Ford Coppola (after decades of shuffling writers and casts, with everyone from Marlon Brando to Brad Pitt to Coppola himself related to the production). Salles’ keen understanding and embracing of “the imperfections of life,” as the Brazilian auteur puts it, is what cemented his involvement. One can see Salles’ veneration for the piece in his realistic cinematography (with guidance from Eric Gautier, another Motorcycle Diaries alumnus, manning a handheld camera). This being the story of explosive, curious 20-somethings in a post-WWII existence hitting the road to find their respective truths, the camera was apt in capturing that unstable hubbub. The nightclub scenes, set afire by Terrence Howard as jazzman Walter, were not only raucous but also tremulous, a certain intangible danger pulsing through the set. Could that danger be in the form of Stewart’s reinvention as a wild woman onscreen? As the vivacious Marylou, the audience’s first glimpse of Stewart in On the Road is of her topless, languishing on husband Dean Moriarty’s (Hedlund’s) bed. This is no Bella Swan. Stewart recognizes and respects that her fan base might cry foul on her newfound brashness, but she’s aiming to grow as a thespian. “The weight is lifted,” she said of her Twilight days. “I don’t have to worry about Bella anymore. But I’m like, Wow… it’s so weird. Where is it? She’s not like tapping me on the

shoulder anymore.” Salles added, “I think that [Stewart’s] such a mature and serious actress that although the character is very different than who she is, she understood everything in the logic of the character…” The trials of Salles and screenwriter Jose Rivera (“Eerie, Indiana”) figuring out what aspects to keep and which to dispose in the script were documented on camera – a sort of Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse for this beatnik behemoth. For example, the grounded Remi, who temporarily reels in protagonist Sal Paradise from Dean’s crazy clutches, is omitted from the movie. Salles surmises that doc will eventually see the light of day, as he’s not signed on for any other movies at the moment. The parallels between the proto-beatnik mentality of Sal, Dean and the gang and today’s youth are fateful. In a way, today’s college-age adults are part of a post-war generation, too— one that left many itching to get away from the Bush-era uncertainty of their adolescence. “Within this time, there was such a sense of yearning for freedom and to get out,” Hedlund said of the beats. “These guys were trying to explore all aspects of life when few were.” In striving for that unnamed “more,” today’s students still look to Mr. Moriarty and his surly crew as antiheroes. Sex, drugs and music (bebop then, raves now?) still fuel the fertile spirit, and fast cars remain the vehicles to get them there. Now, just as it was in the late 1940s, it’s a mad world, and On the Road on the big screen is sure to satiate and inspire that desire for freedom. On the Road releases in theaters Dec. 21. THEATER: PREVIEW

BAD PUPPETS ON STAGE

“Stuffed and Unstrung” features puppets that aren’t your typical Muppets.

Carol Rosegg

Henson Alternative’s “Stuffed and Unstrung” is a hilarious show featuring your not-so-average Muppets. BY KELLY HARGRAVES My online morning started with a lively Facebook debate with my cousin in Canada about whether a certain puppet was a Muppet animal or not: the eyebrows were different, the mouth was wrong and isn’t he red, not pink? You see, there are the Muppets we know and love from our childhood, and then there are their “cousins,” those that look sort of the same yet different. Those puppets are Henson Alternative’s “Miskreant Puppets,” created by the company over the years before the celebrity puppet world of Miss Piggy, Kermit, Gonzo and Elmo. The workshop that makes all these fuzzy bodies with a human soul has a whole company that works in TV commercials, movies and on TV shows (remember “Crank Yankers”?). The company decided that a good way to train its performers was to teach them comedy improvisation skills, so they hired well-known TV actor Patrick Bristow to teach them how to roll with the action. What started as a creative workshop performance quickly became popular – it turns out people really love comedy, improvisation and puppets all in one. The idea of comedy improvisation being done by “nonhumans” (sort of) seemed to open up a vibe that allows for an R-rated adult version of such child’s play. Now, six years

later, they are still taking the show on the road with “Stuffed and Unstrung,” an evening of musical numbers, comedy skits and audience interaction that make a pretty good end-of-the year party. Bristow, who you may be familiar with from his many TV appearances as the quintessential man-child side kick on the groundbreaking sitcom “Ellen” as well as “Friends,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” a number of Disney Channel shows or in one of Hollywood’s most popular stage shows right now, “How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse,” is the host of “Stuffed and Unstrung.” He keeps the skits on track and engages the audience in their creation. “Stuffed and Unstrung” offers adults a chance to indulge in their inner child. “Puppets give everyone a freedom to push the envelope, even if that bad behavior is being created by an adult with twisted sense of humor under the puppet,” said Bristow. “We don’t set out to be smutty, but we have license for what the audience wants.” This sort of subversive work is not so far fetched to those who know (or remember) Jim Henson’s early career. With frequent appearances on “SNL” and “The Tonight Show,” Henson was always somewhat subversive; political topics and

R-rated skits were the norm before the primetime Muppet era. Today, under the director of Henson’s son Brian, the “Stuffed and Unstrung” show features performers from companies, including Groundlings Improv. “They are great comics who have taken the time to learn how to puppeteer,” said Bristow. “It’s a long process, like learning a musical instrument; it’s a very disciplined art form.” The Irvine show will feature members of the founding cast, including Alison Mork (“PeeWee’s Playhouse”), Paul Rugg (“Pinky & The Brain” and “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command”) and Victor Yerrid (The Hangover, Forgetting Sarah Marshall). The show has gotten rave reviews in London, New York City, San Francisco and in past L.A. shows at clubs like Largo and the Avalon. You may have also seen them with Cee Lo Green and Gwyneth Paltrow during last year’s Grammys. They are currently working on a film, but you can see them on stage in Irvine very soon. “Stuffed and Unstrung” will be at the Irvine Barclay Theatre from Dec. 28 to Dec. 31. Tickets are $38-$45 from Friday to Sunday and $45-$55 on Monday. Visit www.stuffedandunstrung.com for more information.

ART: EXHIBITS This painting by Matthias Stom is featured at the Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy exhibit.

SHADOWS, EMOTIONS AT CARAVAGGIO EXHIBIT The Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy exhibit at LACMA showcases Caravaggio’s work and works by other artists who were inspired by him. BY SABINA IBARRA

Matthias Stom

SPENDing an evening at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is always a feast for the senses. Housed in the same area where the Tim Burton exhibit was previously held is Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy. This exhibit presents the work of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), the brooding and enigmatic artist whose creations garnered him a popularity that rivaled both Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Unlike most of the Renaissance and Baroque art, which focused on adorned details and beauty, the Bodies and Shadows exhibit displays a different side of art that was

8

Campus Circle 12.13.12 - 12.19.12

present during that period. This exhibit showcases a number of Caravaggio’s pieces and other pieces by different artists from around the world who were inspired by his legacy. If you’re expecting sweeping landscapes and saintly portraits, you won’t find them here. Intrigue, however, will draw you in. There is a profane beauty in the works on display. Portraits of brutal and powerful women with the heads of men on platters are a recurring theme in the legacy, for instance. The expressions are intensely presented, and you can discern the emotion in the jarring pieces. Many of his commissions are of saints and of Jesus Christ, but what makes his pieces (and the ones inspired by him) stand out is that they are so unlike the representations we are used to seeing. There is almost something raw in his interpretation of saintly ecstasy and pain. It’s in the way the light draws focus on the shapes and eyes while having a blurred-out background. It’s the way the collection draws your focus and isolates a feeling more than capturing a moment. It’s a bizarre sensation to have while taking in these images that are often unpleasant; you’re attracted to the sensory heightened in the emotion of the art.

Another one of the recurring images in Caravaggio’s work is that of Christ having the crown of thorns put on top of his head. The brutality pops out at you with the glint in his eyes and in the prosecutors’ expressions. Even just the detail of the thorns cutting into his skin is unsettling. What’s unique about these images is their ability to tap into your emotions, bringing out different reactions. You will feel so many different kinds of emotions while you walk through this exhibit. It will definitely make you feel things in an instant that you thought couldn’t be drawn out as quickly as they are. Like the light in some of the dark paintings that attracts the spectator, you could find yourself mirroring the wonder and taking part in the intimacy of the people congregated in these portraits. The Art of Caravaggio is definitely an experience unlike many and an interesting part of the selections available at the LACMA this season. The exhibit runs from now to Feb 10. FOOD: ROUNDUP The fireplace at Bar|Kitchen is in the lobby, where you can relax and drink as you wait for a table.

Sitting next to the fireplace as you enjoy dinner with your friends and family is not something you can only do at home. Check out these L.A. restaurants that offer the same treatment! BY JULIE CHAMBERLAIN The holidays are fast approaching, and even though we live in sunny California, it still gets cold outside. Take advantage of this blustery, rainy weather and instead of opting for your usual go-to restaurant, experience the romance, coziness and intimacy that a fireside dinner can bring to your dining experience. Are you in the mood to eat somewhere that feels like home? Then Nicky D’s Wood-Fired Pizza, located at 2764 Rowena Ave in Los Angeles is the place for you. This cute little pizza shop was converted from an old home, which is why they have a fireplace. Their handcrafted New York-style pizza that’s made in a big, old, wood-burning oven helps create a warm, family-oriented ambiance. The establishment is small, resembling an old cabin with wood tables and chairs lining the area closest to the fireplace, which looks like it may have been a living room or a den. This small place in the Silver Lake area is perfect for everything from dates to hanging out with your friends and family. If you’re looking for an indoor, classier, yet lauded back environment, you should try the Bar|Kitchen in the O Hotel in downtown L.A. located at 819 S. Flower Street. With the beautiful fireplace in the lobby of the restaurant, diners will be able to find a seat near the fire whenever they want and still have a nice table, enjoying the amazing fare or the incredible drink options.

ENJOY THE FIRE AT THESE L.A. RESTAURANTS

Are you in the mood for something a little different? This small L.A. hidden gem may be just what you want. Located at 143 N Brea Ave. in Los Angeles, the Amalfi Italian Grill and Pub is a beautiful and unique place to eat. With a fireplace located inside, this restaurant feels cozy and romantic. Amalfi is located directly next to the ACME Comedy Theatre, making it a perfect place to eat after a date night full of smiles and laughter. If comedy is not your style, inside this venue is a place called the Room 5 lounge where bands play every night. But if you’re not looking for entertainment, this restaurant can still be acclaimed for its food, with delicious Italian cuisine and pizza as its specialty. For those of us who are into more of a bar crowd, The Abbey might be the perfect place for you. Located on 692 N. Robertson Blvd. in West Hollywood, The Abbey was named the “Best gay bar in the world” by MTV’S LOGO. This bar and restaurant has a cool fireplace and reasonably priced fare. With the most expensive thing on the menu being $24 (mind you that’s for steak), this is the perfect place to enjoy a cute fireplace, drink and have a girl’s night out. All girls ever do at bars is worry about being hit on by creepy guys, so why not go somewhere where you can relax and have fun without being bothered?

NIGHTLIFE

DONE WITH FINALS? TIME TO PARTY!

The Standard DTLA is a hot spot for the hip, young and creative crowd.

photos: Kevin D. Robertson

Enjoy house, disco beats and euro techno music at A Place Called Rhonda.

The top nightclubs, cantinas and dive bars college students must visit to celebrate.

BY KEVIN D. ROBERTSON English writer Quentin Crisp once said “Los Angeles is just New York lying down.” It’s a statement that has multiple meanings, but I think Quentin meant it as: L.A. has a quietness to it, and it is slow-moving. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. L.A.’s social scene can be bewildering, due to the size of the area and the organic shelf life of clubs. But I’ve narrowed down a few places that you must go to after finals are over. The Belasco Downtown L.A. has a rap sheet as long as Lindsay Lohan’s. But downtown L.A.’s record lacks justification. Historic buildings hide a collection of shiny hotspots, one of them being The Belasco. Once a majestic 1200-seat theatre, Belasco is now a premiere entertainment destination with the original fixtures of the theatre, a state-of-the art lighting system and the largest D&B Audiotechnik Sound System in the area. The jewel of Belasco is the towering domed ceiling with customizable 3-D light mapping. Imagine dancing underneath a Cirque Du Soleil-esque light show with a glow stick in one hand and a refreshing beverage in the other. If you’re into a South Beachlike ambience and enjoy a gorgeous crowd, check it out. The best nights to go are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Belasco is located at 1050 S. Hill Street in Los Angeles. The Standard Downtown The Standard DTLA is the go-to destination for the hip, young and creative crowd that lives and works in downtown. When

16

Campus Circle 12.13.12 - 12.19.12

you first walk in, you enter the Lobby Lounge, an opulent marble lobby. On Saturday night, they have secret big-name DJ’s playing in the booth. Whether your eye first catches the billiards table, the ferocious ping-pong game, the installation pieces or the Vladimir Kagan labyrinth sofa, first-timers always end up hypnotized by the wall installation of a woman’s long legs with underwear dropping to her high-heeled feet in the bathroom. The bar, adjacent to the lobby, in 24/7 Restaurant is contemporary, vibrant and attracts a good-looking crowd. But the best bar is on the roof. I suggest going after dark. It feels like you’re transported into a rooftop party in Manhattan with its amazing view. From the pool area, movies are projected onto the opposite building. On certain nights, bands perform. Lay back and listen on one of the retro, red waterbed pods. The Standard Downtown is located at 550 S. Flower at 6th Street in Los Angeles. Bar 107 If you like your bars “divey” and eclectic with disco balls, thrift-store art and linoleum flooring, Bar 107 in downtown has a PBR or Tecate waiting for you. Beer is $3. Most other drinks are $5. It’s dark to create a cozy feeling and make you less uncomfortable when someone unfortunate-looking rubs up on you. It’s going to be shoulder-to-shoulder packed. From the crowd, it gets really muggy. Men don’t wear nice shoes and women don’t wear high heels, so it’s okay to dress down. The crowd is college students, downtown locals and out-oftowners.

Bar 107 is located at W. 4th Street in Los Angeles. Frank ‘n Hank If you’re more comfortable in flip-flops and a T-shirt and you just want to play pool and enjoy yourself and the company of drunken strangers, Frank ‘n Hank in Koreatown may be your favorite new dive bar. It’s an in-between dive bar that’s not dirty and not eclectic. It offers cheap drinks, darts, billiards, a friendly crowd, sometimes a jazz band but always a jukebox. Parking is a bit hard to find on Western, so park in the neighborhood off 4th and 5th. The owner, a woman named Snow, will out drink you every night. Beers are in between $3$4, and well drinks are typically $5 and generously poured. It is a cash-only bar. Frank ‘n Hanks is located at 518 S. Western Avenue in Los Angeles. A Club Called Rhonda If you’re more into a Chelsea scene, with mini Carrie Bradshaw’s, unexpected glamour, burly men in high heels and drag queens, then A Club Called Rhonda is where you need to be. Anything goes and anything will go down. So be sure to live Tweet your experience. The crowd is chill, the music a mixture between disco beats, house and euro techno but not heavysounding. Prepare to work up a sweat. You might see Amanda Lepore, Azari and III or Fergie. The party hops around different days and nights, so to know where the next one is, you have to join the mailing list at rhondasays.net.

FASHION: HOLIDAY

TURN HEADS at the next HOLIDAY PARTY BY ANN AU One of the reasons why December is more fun than the other months is because of the holidays; you’re guaranteed festive celebrations and parties. So, it’s important that you wear your most glamorous and stylish attire to help you grab the spotlight at any social gathering. As a fashion lover, it has always been natural for me to follow fashion trends and come up with outfit ideas. However, many people are not fond of throwing an outfit together for a party (some even find it stressful). Don’t worry - the following guide is an early Christmas present from us to you and will guarantee that you’ll have the hottest outfit at any holiday soiree this month! 1. Find a Faux Fur Jacket (or any fluffy jacket) Spotted on a lot of celebrities and models strutting down the runway, the faux fur (or fluffy) jacket is the best choice for those outdoor parties. I love how they can be paired with anything, and they have the ability to magically glam up or add a style to any ordinary outfit in the snap of a finger – it really is endlessly versatile. The only rule is to wear something simple, trim and body-hugging as the rest of your outfit, since the fluffiness of the jacket tends to make you look bulkier than you actually are. Depending on what you pair it with, the faux fur or fluffy jacket could be appropriate for various outdoors holiday parties, from a low-key cocktail gathering, a huge church party or a countdown fireworks celebration, to a backyard barbeque hangout or sorority kickback. 2. Don’t be Afraid to Sparkle Whenever I come across a sparkly clothing item, there’s one word that comes to mind: glamorous! Holiday parties are one of those events that allow you to be as glamorous as you want without people throwing weird or curious looks at you. So, bring out your inner diva by rocking a sparkly clothing item: Try wearing a sequin mini dress or glittery pants. You can balance out the sparkles by throwing on something in a deep solid color, and never wear more than one sparkly clothing item at the same time (unless you don’t mind to be

www.CampusCircle.com

mistaken as a Las Vegas showgirl). If you want to keep a low profile, wearing solid color clothing with sparkly jewelry will help you achieve that glamorous look, too.

holiday wardrobe. Get your creative juices flowing, and mix n’ match items of contrasting color. For example, pair a coral top with a hot pink skirt or a one-shouldered royal blue top tucked into coral pants. The possibilities with these combinations are endless. If you’re feeling lazy and don’t want to do all this work, (premade) color blocked dresses are a great choice for you. Simply slip the dress on, and you’re ready to break out and have fun! Applying this color blocking technique to your outfit will definitely capture a lot of attention.

Whether it’s a Christmas get together or ringing in the New Year, make sure you show up in style.

4. Wear Red Not only is red festive and playful, but this color also helps you look and feel like a million bucks. You can incorporate this chic and elegant color into your outfit in many ways. Sport a red dress, red top, red pants or any other red main clothing items. Or you can even just showcase a hint of red on your eyelids, lips or nails. There will be a thick aura of Christmas encircling you. 5. Invest in a LBD (little black dress) This is the safest choice among all the other outfit ideas, which makes it appropriate for office parties or more formal parties. It’s very hard to go wrong with a LBD. Don’t forget to wear leggings/stockings, especially if your dress is strapless or short. You can even stack one pair of leggings on top of another one for those extra windy and chilly days. One suggestion is to wear a thick solid black pair underneath with a pattern on top of it. Also, make sure that you glam up a plain black dress with jewelry (earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets) so your look doesn’t come off as boring.

6. One Last Thing… To amp up the holiday spirit in any look (and for the practical reason of staying warm), surround your neck with a bright, Rebecca Hall-Lucero/San Jose Mercury News/MCT colorful, “Christmasy” scarf. For example, try a scarf in green/red or one that has reindeers/Santa 3. Attempt Color Blocking Clause/ snowman or any other patterns along those lines. Color blocking has been thriving in the fashion world all year Note: The circle scarf, which is a big hit this season, can add long, and there’s no reason to not carry this trend to your volume and works wonders on any outfit. HOLIDAY: LOVE & RELATIONSHIPS

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR HER AND HIM

Surprise her (or him) with something that they’ll love this holiday season.

Whether you’re a man shopping for your girlfriend or vice versa, we’ve come up with a list of gift ideas for your significant other. BY NICKI SPENCER AND MARVIN VASQUEZ or a cute digital camera this holiday season. Take notice of any technological things that are missing in her life and fill the gap with your present. A fashionable phone or laptop case also serves as safe gift options.

Nicki Spencer

Gifts She Wants (A Woman’s Perspective) Something You Made Making her something like a scrapbook filled with the memories you’ve shared let’s her know that you value your relationship. Make her something that embraces your talents. If scrap booking isn’t your forte, do something else you’re good at. If you’re musical, write her a song. If you’re a good cook, make her the best meal she’s ever had. In the end, she’ll love it because you made it personally for her. Technology Hey - girls like gadgets too! Get her fancy headphones, speakers

Jewelry Jewelry sounds like a gift for only “serious” relationships, but there are plenty of jewelry items that are suitable for new relationships as well. When it comes to jewelry, ask her friends for advice. And, if you want to get her an item that is truly special, get something engraved to a personal touch. Something That Inspires Her Does she always talk about how she would love to play an instrument? Or take up painting? Get her exactly what she needs to get the ball rolling on reaching her goals. Buy her an acoustic guitar or some paint and a canvas. She will love that you paid attention to her goals. Gifts He Wants (A Man’s Perspective) Sports It’s safe to assume that 90 percent of guys love anything regarding sports. With this in mind, you could very easily give him several items ranging from tickets to a game (Lakers, Dodgers, etc.) to a signed hat, T-shirt or jersey from his favorite athlete. Be aware

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR LOVE

that this could be costly, but he will love you for it. Work Clothes Men like to look good at work or at their internship. Treat him to a nice blue, black or gray suit. If that’s too expensive for you, two to three ties could do the trick on top of a couple of dressy shirts – but they must be in different colors. Get creative. Other options include shoes, belts or socks to go along with the suits he already has. Aside from a professional environment, a semilengthy coat and scarves would fit any occasion. Vehicle Needs Regardless of what he says, he will always love and protect his automobile. Why not grant him an experience to remember by pimping his car? A new set of sexy tires could work, modest rims or tinting the car windows. Other options include grabbing him seat covers, a stereo system or speakers. Electronics Technology is rapidly changing and substantially growing at a speedy rate. Thusly, this area could be the easiest to focus on while determining to purchase a gift for him. Heard of Apple? Well, they carry an attractive buy in the iPhone, iPad, iPod and other marvelous selections. If those prove too costly for your pockets, there are less expensive tablets, gadgets and accessories.

The Christmas-decorated Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland is the perfect backdrop for you and your date to take photos.

Celebrate the holiday season with your significant other by trying any of these cute date ideas. BY ANN AU Ice Skating There are unending flirting opportunities when you’re taking a slide on the ice! And it’s even better if one of you is not that good at ice-skating or hasn’t skated since you were in elementary school. Also, this is the perfect date idea for a first date. Think about it: How often do you get to hold your date’s hand on a first date without coming off as too pushy or aggressive? And you can even go on a second date to “improve your skating skills.” Look For Houses With Crazy Holiday Decorations In L.A., there are some neighborhoods that go all out with Christmas lighting and decorations during the holidays, including Los Feliz, Bel-Air, Hancock Park and more. Pick one and plan a night out looking at all the beautifully decorated houses and mansions. Make sure you bring some hot chocolate, snacks or a blanket so you and your date can have an exciting yet comfortable time cruising the streets. Go to an Amusement Park Many parks in SoCal get really into the holiday spirit. Knott’s Berry Farm has Christmas entertainment and a Christmas

Crafts Village in Ghost Town where you and your date can walk around the holiday wonderland listening to carolers. Universal Studios City Walk has magical snowfall every half hour and a holiday show with lights and music. And of course, there’s Disneyland. Nothing is quite as romantic as kissing under beautiful, twinkling fireworks as they burst above the Sleeping Beauty Castle while holiday songs play in the background. Holiday Baking Almost everyone loves baked goods, so why not bake together? Build a messy gingerbread house or decorate Christmas tree cookies. Like any other good dates idea, baking is an activity that requires cooperation between two people. You can even find a cake-baking studio like Duff ’s Cakemix on Melrose Avenue where you and your date can come in to decorate cakes and cupcakes (think Color Me Mine but with desserts). Don’t worry even if your baking ends up being a complete disaster; you two will have created a beautiful memory that both of you can look back upon and laugh. Go To A Sporting Event

Right now is basketball and football season. Provided that your date is a huge sports fan (like most guys are), he might adore the idea of catching a Lakers, Clippers or college football bowl game (it’s bowl time!). This could be a wonderful surprise for him. Note to those girls not really into watching sports: Spending time doing what he loves will score you major points. Attend a Holiday Party Inviting your date to a friend’s party will almost always guarantee a good time. But, it would be even more impressive if you hosted a party and invited your friends and date! By hosting a party, you can show your date how generous, organized and sociable you are. On top of that, you can connect your date and your friends, which allows those two important worlds of yours to finally merge.

Yummy and luxurious, Archipelago’s Brown Sugar/Vanilla Bubble Bath lets you drown in the aroma of cookies. BESTIE When Merle Norman says Supreme Lash, they aren’t kidding. Their new mascara plumps and extends to the point where someone asked if I had on false eyelashes. Subtle and bold, organic and cool, Ilia’s tinted lip color’s consistency falls somewhere between a stain and a lipstick. Arabian Nights mimics the look of crushed berries or merlot, flushing your lips without masking them. Winter ‘blahs’ can be beat with Per-fékt Skin’s duo of perfection gels. The combo is all you need for a beauty wake-up call.

GRANDMAS Pretty and basic, Nourish’s line of organic body care products strikes an old-fashioned note. The Wild Berries Body Wash will brighten up any bathroom. Bursting with natural ingredients, like white willow and licorice, By Nieves’ Face Fix works equally well as a scrub and a mask. OVERWORKED PAL Lather’s White Clay Deep Pore Cleansing Mask forces you to take a minute for yourself. This 10-minute facial-in-a-jar is all you need to transform skin before a night out. This unusually cool product uses wild hand-harvested seaweed and Dead Sea salt that rehydrates in water and imparts its soothing properties directly to you. Reduce your morning routine with Dr. Jart’s BB Set. It conquers a variety of issues from battling sun damage to covering up imperfections. SPORTY Ingenius, Coola’s Sunscreen Spray is fun to dispense, and with an endorsement from the American Lifeguard Association, you have no excuse not to use it. Combining primer, moisturizer and no color foundation, Vapour’s Stratus Instant Skin Perfector gives you a flawless visage without any fuss. URBAN GRANOLA Bohemian and cool, Från Krämer’s Vanilla Shea Butter is 100 percent pure of harsh chemicals. This moisturizing product works wonders on winters harsh, drying effects. Ahava’s Purifying Mud Mask sucks out skin’s dead cells, leaving behind more refined pores. The active Dead Sea minerals clean naturally and thoroughly.
