Annual Report 2019/20

On 615 acres of wooded hills, gardens and pastures in rural upstate New York, adults with special needs and long and short-term volunteers live and work together as equals in extended family homes throughout Camphill Village. In this 2019-2020 annual report, we review the ways Camphill Village has so far applied the goals in our three-year Strategic Plan. We thank our wonderful donors for supporting Camphill Village’s work and mission. With your help, our community reached its fundraising goal of $1.95 million, the impact of which can’t be overstated. The photos and financial charts within tell a story of unforgettable experiences, friendships, skill building, and community contribution. We are delighted to share the progress to which you have so generously contributed.

Camphill Village’s contract with the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities provides for just under half of our annual operating budget. Your donations are what make the difference: they provide for our gardens, our medical services and therapies not covered by insurance or trusts, and the work and cultural & social activities through which we bond and learn. Through the 2019-2020 fiscal year, we focused on reaching the goals we had laid out in our three-year strategic plan. We were working on negotiations with the state, and at the time, it was not clear how we would fair with our contract with the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. As a result, our Strategic Plan included emphasis on how to make life meaningful and fun in the Village, as well as enhancing the spread of the Camphill philosophy, and finding ways to raise funds to accomplish these goals. We established working groups within Camphill Village that addressed the points in our Strategic Plan. Together with the Board of Directors, we took a hard look at making things sustainable in terms of resources and energy and also how people live and work together. Sustainability is always at the forefront of the Village’s mind. Our Alternative Funding Group developed a strategy to enhance and spread the philosophy of Camphill Village through alternative sources of revenue. The group analyzed the core strengths of the Village to spread the word and diversify our funding so we would be less reliant on government funding. We leased land

in a well-known farm space in the Village of Copake known as the Copake flats. The Healing Plant Garden in the Village was a source of inspiration, and the Village’s gardeners collaborated to grow a collection of potent and aromatic herbs while also searching for other companies to help us bring products to the marketplace, like Harney & Sons Fine Teas. We are enthusiastically continuing to pursue these exciting initiatives that will simultaneously get the word out about the Camphill Movement and our inspiring model. Dear friends, Our Strategic Plan has presented some opportunities for our organization to be creative in our efforts to enhance and spread the Camphill philosophy, values, and practices. Through the 2019 year, we managed to make excellent use of our newly renovated Café and Coffee Shop, welcoming great musical acts and celebrating dinners and holidays together. There was even one delicious hummus luncheon prepared by some of our community members from Israel. This space is serving to strengthen our relationships with those with whom we build community, as well as set the stage for new relationships with visitors who come to enjoy our wonderful new space. As many of you know, the cultural enrichment offered by our worldly community members who come from all over the globe is something we hold dear. We also value the ability of our community members to be able to travel outside of the United States when possible. Over the years, Camphill Village community members have taken some exciting journeys, and this year was no exception. In 2019, Kerst, Min, Oliver, and Elisabeth traveled to China, where they visited a Waldorf school, met the celebrated Terracotta Warriors, attended the opera, and more. On our own soil, Turtle Tree Seed continued to spread Camphill’s values of biodynamic agriculture via the seeds they shipped all

2019-2020 Camphill Village Board of Directors around the country. The patience and care they take in growing their vegetables, and selecting and preparing their seeds is inspiring. Outside of the Village, we leased a blank canvas – 20 acres of organic farmland in the heart of the Village of Copake – with rather large ambitions. We wanted to continue our pursuit of fiscal security, increase our presence and the concepts of biodynamic agriculture in the greater community, and grow more food and herbs to consume and to sell. And we’ve done all of this and more. We thank our families and friends for their support that enables us to pursue our common goal to improve the lives of those who call Camphill Village their home while also expanding our presence in the greater community. This will only benefit our efforts to garner even more support, and ensure Camphill communities remain a fulfilling option for individuals with many different abilities.
