Greg Goral Campbell Volleyball head coach

English’s St. Nick book in the media spotlight This Christmas season you’ll surely hear the name St. Nicholas. In fact, he has a day all to himself. Dec. 6 is St. Nicholas Day, when children in many parts of the world will wake up to find small treats in their shoes or stockings, left to them, they’ll be told, by St. Nicholas. And in the U.S., on Dec. 25, of course, many children will wake up to find gifts left for them, they’ll be told, by Santa Claus, a derivative of St. Nicholas. Have you ever wondered who St. Nicholas was and if he was even real? Adam English, associate professor of theology and philosophy at Campbell University, has.

FOX NEWS Click HERE to watch the Fox News report on Adam English’s book, “The Saint Who Would Be Santa Claus.” Such wondering led him to travel to Bari, Italy, several years ago. There, he visited the tomb of St. Nicholas of Myra, whom many suspected to be the original St. Nicholas, as well as an archival library maintained by Dominican friars. FULL STORY

Greg Goral has been named head coach of the Campbell volleyball program on Monday, announced by Director of Athletics Bob Roller. Goral spent the past five seasons on the staff at Morehead State, where he helped turn the Eagles into an Ohio Valley Conference power. “Greg has coached, recruited and been a part of four championship teams at Morehead State,” said Roller. “I am confident that he will bring this winning attitude to our team. We are excited to see our volleyball team show rapid improvement in 2013.” Goral has experience in turning around programs during his stops at Auburn, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga and Rhode Island. With the Eagles, Goral helped push the program to its first appearance in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament in 2011. Morehead State posted a 121-42 overall and 77-12 OVC mark during his five seasons, including a 42-2 league mark. A Winter Oasis

Relax and rewind this winter with the library’s Oasis Collection Courtesy of Wiggins Memorial Library

It’s no mirage - Wiggins Memorial Library’s Oasis Collection truly is a balm for study-weary students, fatigued faculty and spent staff members. This collection of recent popular and thought-provoking books, movies and video games is designed to refresh and replenish patrons’ energy, spirits and outlooks. The collection also features new thematic treatments periodically. The latest is “Don’t Judge a Book by its Movie.” The brainchild of circulation manager Elizabeth Dobbins, “Don’t Judge a Book by Its Movie” takes its cue from a rash of December 2movie releases based on books now in Oasis circulation – Les Miserables, The Hobbit, The Great

On Facebook “Like” Campbell University Libraries at its official Facebook page, facebook.com/28529433446

Gatsby, On the Road and Jack Reacher. Dobbins says, “While this display is inspired by the exciting upcoming releases of several book-to-film movies, it includes a variety of books in our lending collection and the movies they inspired in past years.” Available for check-out in both print and DVD are perennial favorites such as Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz as well as contemporary works such as The Bourne Ultimatum, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and No Country for Old

Men. The special Oasis displays are built with thoughts of both broadening patrons’ perspectives and providing pure entertainment. Some are seasonal, such as a Halloween-themed scare-fest, and some are topical, such as a recent display of books about sustainable food alongside information about seasonal and local food resources. Does Wiggins Library’s Oasis Collection support the studious pursuit of academic excellence or is it a refreshing counterpoint to serious study? In fact, it’s both. And for inspiration or simply a night off, all are invited to dive into Wiggins Library’s Oasis Collection, just a few feet east of the Circulation desk.
