The Parks Department continues to make improvements and showcase the beauty of Campbell River Parks. Tree Planting: The City was the recipient of a grant from Tree Canada/ BC Hydro which enabled the Parks crew to plant eighty five European Hornbeam trees along a stretch of the Greenways Loop between Hilchey Road and the Jubilee Parkway. Trees located along the transportation corridor fulfill the City of Campbell River’s ‘Smart Growth’ principles by creating livable spaces that are walkable, inclusive and energy efficient, improving infrastructure to promote active lifestyles, leading to improved physical and social health. Street trees in this area will help with air filtration, wind breaking, urban heat island effect and carbon sequestration. Floral Displays: Flowers added a fantastic burst of colour in 2013. The horticulturists highlighted many of the City facilities with showy floral displays. Rediscovering the beautiful parks: There are many beautiful parks to discover in Campbell River, but a special treat is the view from Cedric Jones Park, which received an update this year from the parks maintenance crew. This lovely little park can be found between 191 and 205 South Alder Street. Check it out!

Bronze Star Bronze Star is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Candidates develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and in partners. They learn self-rescue techniques, in-water searches, CPR, water rescue skills and first aid including how to manage a land spinal injury. Candidates also develop stroke endurance and lifesaving fitness skills. Bronze Medallion Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Includes CPR-A certification. Bronze Cross Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills. Includes CPR-C certification. National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Recognized as the standard measurement of lifeguarding performance in Canada, the NLS program develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment and communication skills, and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard. The NLS lifeguard’s primary role is to prevent injuries (and when necessary, effectively manage emergencies) and to facilitate a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience. NLS training develops the basic lifeguarding skills needed to adapt to different aquatic facilities and situations. Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) This course provides the candidate with the knowledge and skills needed to become an AWSI, by focusing on teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.
