ALARMED BY GARAGE FIRE IN J ERSEYVILLE On Monday night, at 8:32 pm, Jerseyville firefighters were dispatched to handle a garage fire that broke out at a residence on West Pine St. “When we arrived on the scene, it was fully engulfed. It was already self venting out the windows,” Keith Norman, Assistant Fire Chief said. “Because it was an unattached garage, the residents did not know it was on fire. They were actually notified by a passerby that their garage was on fire.” No one was hurt in the fire. The cause of the fire and any further damage is still yet to be determined.

Aerial view of Jerseyville Mall. The mall was recently purchased by Brookwood Capital Advisors.

(Continued from A1) “It’s got to work for both sides, and it just wouldn’t. We decided to shift gears to try to focus on maybe just selling that big box and some land and we had some good activity there, too,” Fischer said. “ The trouble there, though, is that if you split that property you start to have trouble with who gets what. A good example to mention here is parking in the shopping centre’s lot.” Fischer mentioned during that break, the mall was not listed for a period of time. Fischer’s company got a call to handle the transaction of the mall again as of last year. “Hey, you know, we’ll get involved again, but we have to be realistic. You know, we want to make something happen. We don’t want to keep wasting everybody’s time. We decided to look into an auction platform to try to identify a good online platform where we could offer this asset to a new developer," Fisher said. Fischer ended up recontacting his prior prospective clients who were a shopping centre owners and a developer from the South called Brookwood Capital Advisors (BCA). “We never got together on a deal before, but now that it is going to auction, I let them know about the auction sale and they were pretty excited about it. They ended up winning it and bought it at auction,” Fischer said. “They paid a million and fifty thousand for the mall at the closing last week.” “I was happy to get the job done for them. I didn’t

want to take the assignment a second time without getting some results and I’m glad to see something happened. Hopefully, for the community Hamd will see his company’s plan to fruition,” Fischer said. Fischer mentioned he heard that BCA has a client and may have a discount retail operation of some kind to come into the space. However, Brookwood Capital Advisors, has some different ideas for the shopping center. “We have two big spaces and are trying something different as a redevelopment company. It’s just myself and a few other partners and we are located in Nashville, Tenn. We started buying places about 10 years ago. We fixed them up and filled them up,” Ben Hamd said. Hamd’s company specializes in the stabilization of shopping centers that have high vacancy in the shopping centres. Brookwood Capital Advisors understands how to lease big box stores and are experts in attracting strong national and regional retailers to their sites. The company targets local leasing efforts, builds strong relationships with key retail chains and brings them to cities where they have investments, (like the Jerseyville Shopping Mall). “We’ve kinda tried to buy as much as we can where we think there’s upside. We bought this because we think and we know ultimately, we’re gonna fill the Walmart box area and the former grocery store with a tenant. The way we do that is try

to keep the rents as cheap as possible. “The idea is to help a new business get started or move a business or open an expansion of their existing business in Jerseyville,” Hamd said. “My company feels the best way to accomplish this is to make sure that the person taking the risk, as the tenant, is covered with a long period of free rent.” On July 28, Hamd posted the offer on the Tri-County Trading Post Facebook page. He said that, since then, he has been talking to several businesses about the spaces. No agreements are concrete yet, he said “If anybody has an idea, wants to get into a business that needs a large amount of space, like for example if someone wants to open a furniture store, palate flipping store, discount store, or even a skating rink, we want to help bring you someone for that space,” Hamd explained. “Our goal is to bring you a business that works for the Jerseyville community.” Hamd said there is a lot of potential for those spaces and the center has McDonalds, Dollar General, Davita, several great restaurants and is right in town! Since the posting on Facebook from Hamd, there has been a lot of response. Some people have made comments about having an Aldi, or a year long farmer’s market. For more information on how to get in touch with Brookwood Capital Advisors you can reach out to them through email: bencapitaladv.com or call them at: 202-525-8991.

Illinois American Water and the City of Jerseyville have partnered to implement a permanent pharmaceutical disposal program in Jerseyville. Illinois American Water donated the pharmaceutical drop box, which was installed at the Jerseyville Police Department, located at 200 S. Jefferson Street in Jerseyville. Residents are encouraged to drop off their unwanted medications so they can be incinerated, which is the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recommended approach for pharmaceutical disposal. Flushing medications down the toilet or the drain as well as throwing them in the trash are discouraged. “This program is a great opportunity for Jerseyville residents to stop by the Police Department and securely drop off any unused or expired medications,” said Chief of Police Brad Blackorby. “We have a 24 hr drop box and we can dispose of unwanted medicines and needles but we ask people not to dispose of the needles in the box.” “It’s important for us to keep these items not only out of our landfills and water supplies, but also out of the hands of our youth.” Blackorby finished explaining.

The Jerseyville pharmaceutical disposal program is one of several supported through Illinois American Water’s initiatives. “Our goal is to establish a greatly expanded network of secure pharmaceutical collection centers throughout the state,” said Jennifer Doody, senior supervisor of operations for the Jerseyville service area. Through collaboration with local pharmacies, police departments and government officials, Illinois American Water has implemented and supported over 30 pharmaceutical disposal programs from the Chicago Metro area to Waterloo. These programs are included in the Illinois EPA’s medication disposal map here https://tinyurl.com/6ycvzcxj. The pharmaceutical disposal program model was developed by Pontiac High School students and their teacher Paul Ritter. The program, P2D2, has been recognized by the Ill EPA and the Department of Natural Resources. In addition, the Drug Enforcement Agency sponsors an annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Through all of these efforts, hundreds of thousands of pounds of unwanted medications have been properly disposed of.

Sheriff (Continued from A1) Since the incident involved Greene and Madison counties, but not Jersey County, Ringhausen could not provide any details regarding the incident in question because his department did not handle it. Ringhausen was able to share that he has known about gang-related activity in both Jacksonville and St. Louis, but this isn’t a new situation as far as Jersey County is concerned. Rather, it has been known in the region for some time now that this type of activity occurs southerly and northerly of the area. “This would be another example as to why you keep everything locked up,” Ringhausen said. “And if you’re seeing things that don’t look right, then give us a call.” These types of incidents are also the

reason why local law enforcement have a heightened awareness of their surroundings when making traffic stops, according to Ringhausen. As Ringhausen explained, nothing happened in Jersey County regarding this particular incident other than that it passed through between southern Greene County and the Brighton area. Nevertheless, the fact that it passed through Jersey County is enough to remind residents to remain vigilant to suspicious activity and to keep their possessions secure at all times. Ringhausen further exemplified the necessity of security by noting there was a single vehicular theft in the county that occurred a few months ago east of Jerseyville. That vehicle has since been recovered from the St. Louis area.

was initially reported throughout the region. According to Heffington, the kids who were involved in the situation did speak to an individual, but they exaggerated their report a bit. Once the sheriff’s office did a little digging, it was discovered that the claim of an attempted kidnapping was not accurate. Nevertheless, the Calhoun, Greene and Jersey County area does see quite a number of interesting characters make their way into local communities, so families and neighborhoods should never let their guard down. “They should still pay attention, because you can’t say it won’t happen in the future— you just never know,” Heffington said.

Although this is an outdoor event, current COVID-19 protocols will be expected. If you enjoy hummingbirds, consider joining the fun and plan on visiting the festival at the Engel farm. It should be a rewarding and entertaining experience. How often will you have a real opportunity to have a live hummingbird

The festival may be reached by taking Rt. 267 south out of Jacksonville, turning east onto 2700N (in Greene County), and going 2.2 miles to the entrance of Engel’s long driveway on the left. Hummingbird festival at the Engel Farm

The Engel Farm will be the site of a Hummingbird Festival again this year. It is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Aug. 8, 1-4 p.m. Although the number of birds typically returning to Illinois in late April and early May was disappointingly low, near- or above-normal numbers are now present and should put on a good show for festival visitors. Vernon Kleen, a licensed hummingbird bander and President of the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, will begin the festival at 1 p.m. with a short discussion about hummingbirds and explain why they are banded. After the discussion, birds will be captured, banded and promptly released. The festival is a family event that persons of all ages will enjoy. Although there is no admission or participation fee, donations would be appreciated. Visitors who register to “adopt” birds will receive an attractive, signed certificate, may be able (if enough birds are captured) to release the bird they adopted, and will be notified if their bird is ever recaptured. Every year more than a hundred people who have adopted birds are notified that the birds they adopted at past Illinois festivals were recaptured. Those wishing to “adopt” birds are encouraged to provide address labels to reduce their waiting time in the registration line.

Attempted kidnapping did not occur in Kampsville last week

Free program developed by the Dispositions Jerseyville Police Department

By BRAD BLACKORBY Chief of Police The Jerseyville Police Department has developed a free program called the Potentially Impaired or Non-Verbal PersonSticker program (P.I.N.). “ This project was inspired by the St. Louis County Police Department’s P.I.N. Program,” Jerseyville Police Chief Brad Blackorby said. The P.I.N. Sticker Program helps emergency response team members identify people who may suffer from an impairment. The participants will be issued two color coded stickers, one for their primary automobile and one for their home. The Stickers are color coded in a manner which will alert law Enforcement, Fire Services and EMS to a specific impairment or communication barrier. The color key and related list of impairments will be first responder sensitive. Color keys will be disseminated to local police, fire and EMS agencies with the request that it not be made public information or shared with the media in the interest of protecting those participating. “The program is intended to notify police officers and other first responders whether on a traffic stop or responding to a residence to recognize the P.I.N. Sticker. The sticker will help make the responders aware that an impairment may be present, i.e., hearing impairment, dementia, autism, etc.,” Blackorby said. “The Jerseyville Police Department is eager to provide this program to its citizens. It is their hope that our fire services and EMS partners find the services equally beneficial.” If you have any questions about the pro-
