Camp Fire Alaska Annual Report 2012

FROM THE CEO THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP Dear Friends, Because of our strong partnerships across the state, we are thriving. Great things are happening at Camp Fire. Incredible stories of growth, resiliency and discovery unfold before our eyes each and every day. We are able to do more things for our youth and families and do things better because of our many partners who share our vision and enable us to reach for our very best. Yet, there is still more to do. We still have youth on waitlists, families need more assistance, and Alaska’s young people now more than ever need more opportunities to find their spark, lift their voice, and discover the best in themselves and others. Imagine if every child in Alaska had these opportunities. Just imagine!

“I really like the group activities that allow my family to meet other Camp Fire families!” — Camp Fire parent

Partnering for Stronger Families and Stronger Kids Camp Fire Alaska implemented family strengthening programming at six of our before and after school sites in 2012: In partnership with thread Alaska, our staff worked to support family resiliency by increasing their social connections; increasing their knowledge of parenting and child development; helping them find concrete support in times of need; and helping to build up healthy social and emotional competence in the youth. Each site planned fun family nights and community café events that promoted interaction and intentional discussion between families, staff and the members of the community.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL

“With the Camp Fire program, our students have a safe and educational environment to come to. The Camp Fire staff are very supportive, and when I see our kids in the morning, I see smiling faces. They’re at ease, they don’t look stressed at all; they’re enjoying being here. That’s what I love.” — John Kito, Principal, Tyson Elementary School

Our Partners • Alaska Wild West Magic • Anchorage School District • BP Energy Center • Child in Transition/ Homeless Project • Cook Inlet Tribal Council • Municipality of Anchorage

Camp Fire’s Before & After School Program—which also offers care on half days, in-service days, planned school breaks and most emergency school closure days—helps working families and keeps kids safe while offering them challenging activities and learning experiences. In 2012 The Alaska Council operated 28 licensed school-age programs, serving more than 1,600 children in grades K to 6 in Anchorage and Eagle River. This included a brand new site that opened in August 2012, at Chester Valley Elementary in East Anchorage.

COMMUNITY CENTERS

Quality before and after-school care is not affordable for many families in Anchorage. Their children eat breakfast alone in the morning and lock the door behind them as they leave for school. They go home to an empty house until their parents get home. But in four economically challenged neighborhoods (Mountain View, Fairview, West Fairview and Loussac Place), Camp Fire Alaska’s Community Center Program provides a fun, safe and nurturing environment for nearly 100 youth each day, at little or no cost to families.

Partners in Redevelopment Camp Fire provided after-school care for the families of Loussac Manor, in Midtown, for more than 30 years. In 2012, Camp Fire began a partnership with Cook Inlet Housing Authority to provide after-school care to the youth of this newly redeveloped mixed-income neighborhood. CIHA designed a space especially for Camp Fire that is spacious, inviting, sunlit and beautiful, and donated start-up funds to help get our program going there again. The first families moved in to the neighborhood in June 2012, and the Camp Fire program opened with the start of school in August. “Camp Fire helps build a better community at Loussac Place, bringing the kids and families of the neighborhood together. We are proud to have Camp Fire as a partner because their program makes a positive difference in the lives of our residents.” — Cook Inlet Housing Authority

Kids Serve, Too!

Imagine the stress of being a member of the military deployed overseas, not seeing your family for months and working in a war zone every day. Now imagine the stress that situation puts on the children waiting back here in Alaska! They know Mom or Dad is in danger, and they miss them terribly. For the last two summers, thanks to a partnership with the National Military Family Association, Camp Fire Alaska has been honored to host Operation Purple, a free summer camp for those children of deployed military parents. In 2012, with the generous support of the Alaska community, 128 of Alaska’s military kids spent a week at Camp K on Kenai Lake in Cooper Landing. They participated in all the fun of summer camp, getting a chance to just be kids for a while, and were also guided through a curriculum designed to develop their coping skills. It’s hard to be sad or anxious while canoeing across a sparkling glacier-fed lake or singing songs around the campfire. And when you are sad, it’s great to know there are kids and adults close by who will listen and understand. Operation Purple provides both those opportunities for our youngest warriors.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE Construction at Camp K BEFORE

The Campaign to Make it Possible Wraps Up! We knew we would get there, but we never anticipated how great it would feel to say: “We Did It! We have raised the funds needed to finish redevelopment of Camp K on Kenai Lake, establish the Inclusion Fund, and started building an endowment. We celebrate each and every one of you who supported the largest fundraising initiative Camp Fire Alaska has ever undertaken. Thank you!

AFTER

What Your Gifts Made Possible: • To serve more youth at camp and focus on program enhancments for Camp K that take full advantage of the beautiful new development, set against the stunning backdrop of Kenai Lake. Within the last 2 years, even with construction happening, Camp K has expanded programs to serve military youth, along with youth who have rheumatoid arthritis. • To welcome more youth into all of our programs. Thanks to funds raised, even if their families are experiencing a hardship and are unable to pay for services, Camp Fire can provide children with a safe place to learn, grow and thrive before and after school, while their parents are at work. These programs are experiencing record growth for the third year in a row. Camp Fire Alaska Annual Report 2012

• To ensure families have access to Camp Fire programs long into the future.
