His rising is the climax of Christ’s Incarnation. Easter is the central Feast of our faith. The triumph of Christ gives us new life. His resurrection is the foundation of our faith. The Resurrection of Jesus is not merely the return of life into His dead body. Our belief is not that He was restored to a life to be taken from Him again, but Jesus entered a different realm of existence. The Risen Life is a life that is totally in God. As a life totally in God, neither sin nor death can touch it again. It is life eternal, fully in the presence of God and fully for God. It is this kind of life that Jesus wants to share with us – to have new life with Him. Our life does not end in the tomb. It does not end in despair, frustrations, and hopelessness. We witness the reality of resurrection everyday. The sun rises when we open our eyes every morning, when we give love to our neighbors, when we safeguard life, when we forgive, when we care for creation, and other experiences of bringing joy and freedom. My dear parishioners, let us stop our fixation on celebrating Easter as Devotional Fanaticism with too much External Liturgical Emphasis. Easter should be a way of life – we should become an Easter People in this Parish. We should participate in the resurrection of Jesus by giving new life through our care and love to the poor and the sick, by safeguarding the Solidarity of every family in our community, by our commitment and availability to serve one another, by a deeper experience of God’s presence in our life, by being One and United in the community to which we belong, and by entrusting to our Mother – Our Lady of La Paz – our Peaceful Pilgrimage.

The Lord has risen! Let us rejoice! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Reflection

Quarterly Report from the PPC President Three months have passed...the ministries of the PPC together with the Finance Council are here again to give an update on their accomplishments. The following articles you are about to read reflect the efforts and initiatives of each ministry. Guided by our Core Values, we realize that nothing is impossible when we are working together as one big family of Christ in Our Lady of Paz Parish. And with the guidance of our good, supportive and energetic pastors, Fr. Gabby & Fr. Rene, everyone has a chance to give his/her best service for the good of all. It is really amazing if our goal is to give Great Glory to GOD. And with Him, we are able to overcome inevitable trials. Looking forward to our next tasks is again a big challenge. But let's keep in mind the principle: "Works / trials are made to match our own limitations/capacity". More power to each one of us! Let us continue our journey with our Blessed Virgin for the progress of our parish community.

“Lead us not into temptation…” by Vince Henry M. Salles

This phrase is one of the seven petitions found in the Lord’s Prayer. We may find it intriguing in the first look, yet the Catechism enlightens us about it:

Our sins result from our consenting to temptation; we therefore ask our Father not to "lead" us into temptation. It is difficult to translate the Greek verb used by a single English word: the Greek means both "do not allow us to enter into temptation" and "do not let us yield to temptation." (CCC 2846)

It may be helpful for us, especially in this forty-day Lenten journey to Easter, to meditate on the mystery of sin and evil resulting from the devil’s temptation. The Catholic Encyclopedia defines temptation as an incitement by the offer of some good or pleasure. It may be merely external or it may be

internal as well, inasmuch as there is a real assault upon a person's will power. We must remember that temptation is not in itself a sin. No matter how vivid the evil imagination may be, no matter how strong the pull, no matter how intense the inclinations are, as long as a person does not consent to it, he/she does not sin. We may ask: does temptation come from God? Why does he want us tempted?

St. James, in his epistle, tells us that “God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one” (Jas 1:14-15). Temptation does not come from God. Temptation is from the devil. God allows evil for us not to rely on our weak sinful selves but to turn to him who is strong and mighty. God permits temptation for us to have an opportunity to practice virtue, to make our bodies master of our souls, and for us to acquire divine merits from Him. We should be thankful to the Lord for allowing us to be tempted. We see the infinite power of God when we succeed over temptation. We see how the devil becomes defeated and crushed under the feet of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through temptation, we see how weak we are without God. Being tempted is a sign that a soul is close to God. Those souls whom God calls to special heights of sanctity are given more temptations to wrestle with – bravely. We must also remember that we do not wrestle with temptations alone. God has given us supernatural means to fight in the spiritual warfare. Ultimately, he has given us the sacraments as our stronghold in this pilgrim way to heaven. He has given us the bread from heaven – the Eucharist as the antidote to sin. He has given us the throne of mercy and healing – the Sacrament of Penance. St. Paul tells us, “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, so that you may be able to endure it” (1 Cor 10:13).

Fighting with temptation implies a firm decision of the heart. It is an act of the will. Let us be faithful for God is always faithful to us. May we all have a glorious death to our own selv es. May God be glorified in our victorious struggles. Amen.

Misang Pambata By: Aileen Sacdalan

Parish celebrates 1st-ever Servants’ Night Last February 11, 2012, Fr. Gabby and the Worship Ministry of our Parish organized the firstever Servants’ Night. This night became an expression of gratitude for the members of the Worship Ministry as well as a celebration for the giftedness of each and every member. The Worship Ministry of our Parish comprises of the Ministry of Altar Servers, the Lectors and Commentators Ministry, the Mother Butler Guild, the Greeters and Collectors Ministry, the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and the Liturgical Music Group. The theme of this year’s Servants’ Night was from the Gospel of St. John: “I have called you friends, since I have made known to you everything I learned from my Father. You did not choose me; it was I who chose you and sent you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last.” Jesus calls us his friends, not his servants. In the different ministries, we ought to serve the Lord as friends just as he made us his friends.

Parish Activities The night started with energizer animation songs by the members of the PREXCharismatic Choir. All the members were excited with the commencement of the fun-filled night of bonding. After the animation, the members were asked to form their groups for the pakilanlan activity, where they introduced themselves and shared their experiences as servants in the parish. A sumptuous dinner prepared by the Mother

Butler Guild and Greeters and Collectors Ministry was then served – it was like a feast at home! After the dinner, both the young and adult ministers played friendship games that awakened the “kid” in them. The happy and colorful faces of the ministers were a sight to behold! Fr. Gabby then announced the next date for the Servants’ Night which will be this coming December 8, 2012. The second Servants’ Night will include all parishioners who serve under the banner of the different ministries of the Parish Pastoral Council.

Married couples say “I Do!” once again By: Jun Alit

February 14, Valentines Day, a day of expressing your love to someone special. Lovers, sweethearts, young couples (married or not) exchanging gifts and dating. Movies, hotels, motels and restaurants are full of people celebrating what they call a “Day of Love”! Churches are empty while the aforementioned establishments are filled to capacity. Thank God, that there are church servants headed by a Parish Priest who always reminds us of the Lord as the real source of Love. Our Lady of La Paz Parish will never forget this day. Yearly, it is celebrated with activities centering on LOVE, through the “Renewal of Marriage Vows”. This year, to increase the number of participating couples, the PPC through the Family and Life ministry, tried a different approach. To give importance to prospective participants, special letters of invitation personally signed by our energetic and loving parish priest, Fr. Gabby Garcia, were sent to them. Planning and preparations began only on February 12, (giving priority to the Servants Night celebrated on February 11). The letters were distributed on February 13, a day before the celebration. There were fears and doubts in our hearts by that time. The major question was “Would couples come at such short notice?” The evening of February 14 came. With the 6 pm Mass only a few minutes away, only three couples were in sight despite the request to come at least 15 minutes prior to the Mass. But slowly, the church began to glow red as participants dressed in the traditional valentine color arrived one after another. Only 30 couples were targeted for that initial project. Heavy merienda was prepared for 80 persons including the service team. The unexpected blessing, however, was that the

Page 5

crowd swelled to more than a hundred. Twenty eight out of the 30 invited couples came. Three walk-in couples came for the mass and joined the renewal. Added to the participants were PPC officers and church servants who came as couples. To be counted also were the the Barangay chairmen of La Paz and Singkamas and some kagawad members and their wives. Though some problems arose, the event went smoothly and still ended up a success. For sure, advance and more thorough planning will be given to next year’s event. We hope to perk it up with additional activities. See you then for another “Date with the Lord!”

Mother Butler Guild finally established By: Mariz Trajano

Last Oct. 2, 2011, Fr. Gab invited me to attend the Mother Butler Guild orientation in our Parish church. Ten of us heeded the invitation and listened to the calling of God. The orientation started with the MBG song sang to the tune of Edelweiss. This was followed by the opening prayer led by Sis Lulu, secretary of MBG Diocesan Council, and the introduction of other MBG council members. After the orientation, we elected our officers to represent the organization. Elected were Mariz Trajano, President; Cherry Obinga, Vice Pres.; Bambi Raymundo, Exec. Sec.; Ruby Jane Lim, Treasurer and Jessica Ala, Vestment Custodian. The other members are Nerie Albovias, Seseng Calejesan, Nelia Magallanes, Jane Tan and Mena Oculto. There are also honorary sponsors and members, to whom we are grateful, for they are there to give financial support to our projects. MBG is an organization of lay women, with the Parish Priest serving as their Spiritual Director. Our motto is “All for Jesus through Mary”. Our Vision and mission is “To know Jesus and make Him known, to love Jesus and to make Him loved.” As members of the MBG, we are all expected to know the above vision and mission statement by heart and not just to memorize but to live it. I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to work so close to Jesus in the Eucharist. Being an MBG member allows us to enhance our faith, to grow in our relationship with God and with one another and in our altar service. One thing is clear to me – that the Holy Spirit moved us in all the experiences that we individually and collectively went through in the past four months. The Holy Spirit ignites the hearts of those who follow God’s call with passion and commitment for love and service. God loves us, no matter what we are and who we are. This coming Feb.18, 2012, we will be installed by Fr. Gab. Sis Carmen S. Remolma, Pres. of the National Council and other MBG organizers will assist him.

“Repent and Believe!” – rallying call of Parish Lenten Recollection 2012

The very words we hear when we begin Lent, “Repent and believe in the Gospel”, became the theme of our Parish Lenten Recollection held last March 3, 2012 at about 7:30 PM at our parish plaza. Fr. Evan Paul Villanueva, MI was the speaker for the said event. In the fresh atmosphere of the evening, the community that was gathered was invited to “recollect” their experiences and to remember how God was present in those moments. After the talk, the community was given the chance to share in small groups and then with the whole community. The sharing revolved on the question, “Paano ko maipapakilala si Kristo sa aking kapwa? (How do I introduce Christ to my neighbor?)” Truly, the Parish Lenten Recollection was effective in preparing us as a parish community for our journey with Christ towards Easter joy. It is the hope of the organizers that more parishioners would come and join this annual event.

Solid Waste Management is a well known terminology that refers to garbage or trash management. Ever since humans began living in settled communities, improper waste management has always been an issue. Whether a community is industrialized or residential it generates voluminous solid waste, the management of which becomes a big problem for the country. Waste is not only hazardous to humans’ health but also causes poor quality of air in the vicinity. The government is now focused on developing environmentally sound methods of handling garbage. In our parish, the two barangay captains and their constituents have been using strategies to reduce waste to implement RA 9003 which is also known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. Being the implementing arms of the government, the barangays use all possible strategies with the support of organizations within the community.

Our Lady of La Paz Parish in cooperation with the different ministries re-launched a Solid Waste Management project with the theme “Pangalagaan ang Kalikasan.” To carry out the project, the Parish Pastoral Council members bought one tri-sikad. With luck on our side, we also received another tri-sikad donated by Barangay Captain Elmer Espiritu. The two tri-sikads were used during the re-launching to collect the recyclables which were then sold. The proceeds from the sale will be used to support some parish activities.

Parish Activities

Page 7

The two Barangay Captains and their respective Kagawads were present at the relaunching and joined the campaign as we pedalled our way on the streets. Residents of the parish went out and donated their recyclables as we passed by. We were able to fill up the area near the garage with our collection. Flyers were distributed during the launching to inform the parishioners of the sectoral collection.

Sectoral Way of the Cross held throughout Lent

The Way of the Cross is a popular devotion among Catholics especially during the Lenten Season. It recalls the passion, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus by the meditation on the manifold sufferings he went through before his death and resurrection. Christ invites us to take up our crosses and follow him. This is a serious, but at the same time, a consoling invitation for those whom he loves. The Sectoral Way of the Cross in the parish started on the first Friday of Lent, February 25, and continued on all the Fridays of the Lenten Season. Families were assigned to set up altars, lead the prayers, and assemble their neighbors in this spiritual activity.

One can gain a plenary indulgence by piously making the Way of the Cross. To gain the plenary indulgence, one has to exclude all attachments to venial sin and fulfill the following conditions: sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and

prayer for the Pope’s intention. Holy Communion and prayer for the intentions of the Pope must be received and prayed on the same day the Way of the Cross is made. Sacramental confession may be fulfilled several days before and after the Way of the Cross. *

Health Care Ministry hurdles challenging activities

The month of March was simply loaded with challenging activities for the Health Care Ministry. On March 15, Dr. Gina Angeles, a family medicine practitioner from St. Camillus Polyclinic, gave a lecture to 40 mothers from the parish on safety precautions against a much-feared sickness: dengue. The lecture started at 3:00pm at the conference room of the parish office. Pocari Sweat, an energy drink, sponsored the session. Barely two days after, the ministry carried out a blood-letting activity. This whole-day project took place at the church patio. Sixty two donors came forward courageously. However, only 49 passed the screening. The beneficiaries of this said activity are patients with HIV-AIDS under the care of the Camillians in Quezon City. The next blood-letting activity is scheduled on July 15. On March 31, Operation Tuli took place. The well lauded event occasioned a good turnout of young boys who were more than willing to go under the knife. Forty one boys were circumcised. For postcircumcision care, they were given free medicines good for one week.

Legion of Mary ACIES 2012 By: Jovy Ann Garcia & FSCL
