Amber Rose: The Darling Of Social Media?

I was taking a morning break when I just happened to see Amber Rose featured on the March 31 episode of “The Doctors”. To be absolutely honest with you, I had never heard of Amber Rose but apparently I was missing something. She is an ex-stripper turned entrepreneur. Not only that, she had some absurd number of followers on Social media- I’m talking about lots of millions. Lots and lots of millions. At last count 7.1 million So I was intrigued enough to find out more about her and what made her so famous.

Born Amber Levonchuck, model Amber Rose is best known for her high-profile romances with Kanye West (2008-2010) and Wiz Khalifa, whom she married in July 2013.

At the age of 15, Amber Rose performed striptease under the pseudonym "Paris" to provide for her family after the divorce of her parents. Rose gained notoriety after posing for a Louis Vuitton print advertisement featuring Kanye West's sneaker line.

In September 2009, Rose announced plans to launch her own eyewear line. She walked the runway at New York Fashion Week for "Celestino," Rose has also made cameos in music videos such as Nicki Minaj's "Massive Attack," Young Jeezy's "Vacation," Wiz Khalifa's "No Sleep," Fabolous' "You Be Killin' Em," and Ludacris' "What Them Girls Like." Rose was spotted by rapper Kanye West in the music video "What Them Girls Like." They then began a romantic relationship that lasted from 2008 to 2010 She signed with modeling agency Ford Models from 2009 to 2010.

In 2010, she appeared in Russell Simmons' reality show about his two assistants, "Running Russell Simmons". She also starred in a PSA by NOH8 Campaign. In 2011, Amber Rose was a guest judge on Season 3 of RuPaul's Drag Race. She was also a judge on Season 2 of Master of the Mix. In November 2011, she became the spokesperson for Smirnoff and appeared in television ads and billboards for the company's new flavors Whipped Cream and Fluffed Marshmallow.

Rose released her debut single "Fame", which features Wiz Khalifa, in January 10, 2012 followed by a second single, titled "Loaded", released on February 6, 2012.She then appeared in the eleventh track of her ex-husband's album O.N.I.F.C., titled "Rise Above", along with rappers Tuki Carter and Pharrell Williams, who produced the song himself. In 2012, Rose opened a clothing line with her friend Priscilla Ono called Rose & Ono.

She was managed by Leticia "Tish" Cyrus, mother of singer Miley Cyrus, who is a close friend to Rose and her ex-husband Wiz Khalifa. Rose guest-starred on an

episode of Wild 'N Out on MTV2, and had a role as "MaryWanna" in the film School Dance, which was directed by her manager, Nick Cannon in 2014.

Dave Kelly Will Join CAM’s Contributors

Rose partnered with publisher Simon & Schuster for the release of her first book, entitled How to Be a Bad Bitch, in which

Starting this summer, Dave Kelly, a professional speaker, author, humorist and trainer will begin to contribute to this publication.

she offers advice and personal anecdotes on everything from finances and career to love and fashion. The cover features an image shot by famed photographer David LaChapelle.

I actually got an email from Dave and was impressed with his advancements in training student leaders. I ask him about using material from his email blast in our Advisor’s Edition in July of this year, an issue that usually kicks off the buying season for activities. His column, “Student Leadership Heaven” will be included in that issue as well as on our website.

PHOTO CREDIT: The above photo was available on US Weekly’s website and for more information on Amber, we suggest you visit their site. Most other sites did not have images that we felt were safe enough for our diverse audience. That said, for Amber to be so popular, there is very little available on her from any sources. I could not find a video I was comfortable enough sharing with buyers on our website.

Dave is the publisher of the Gonzo Motivation Newsletter and his website is www. AmericanStudentLeadership.com

In 2015, Amber Rose filmed, "Walk Of No Shame with Amber Rose," with Funny Or Die. The viral video helped promote Amber Rose's Slut Walk, which took place on October 3, 2015 in Los Angeles, California.

AEP 2016 Will Feature Best Act, Craig Karges plus Ryan Devlin From MTV.

If you are looking for something that will really expand your activities program, The Association of Entertainment Professionals invite you to join us June 12-14, 2016 at South Point Hotel & Casino for the 6th Annual AEP Conference. Special Rates apply for all campus buyers and staff where two can attend for the price of one. Plus registration rates include all offered meals. Rub shoulders with some of the industry’s top buyers and agents. There are 4 showcases with meet and greets with artists. See options you have never seen on any stage. AEP room block is only $60/night for deluxe rooms. Get a jump of buying for 2017 all in only 2 1/2 days. aepworldwide.org for more information

At a time when activities directors are having to wear multiple hats, Dave’s experience can help student leaders learn more about taking charge and helping develop a respected activities program for their campuses. Dave is a well known leader in the activities field and, I think his expertise will help students become not only more effective in their efforts to engage more attendance, but assist them in developing new ideas that can make programs operate more efficiently and effectively.

Sexting: Hot or Hot Mess?

I don't want people to think I’m a prude, I'm not. I speak about sex at colleges across the country. However, I am concerned about sexting. Sending explicit messages of a sexual nature is nothing new. It has been done for hundreds of years. The difference between then and now is technology, and the rate at which these messages can go viral. Sexting is the act of sending a sexually explicit photo, message, instant message, voicemail, or video via the Internet, phone, or computer. While it’s okay for consensual adults to exchange messages, many do not remain private. Sometimes there’s revenge when a couple breaks up. In retaliation the person on the receiving end sends the nude photos viral. This can create an online presence or digital footprint that is embarrassing or leads to a form of sexual harassment. I have written in previous articles that 75% of employers Google the first three pages of an applicant before they decide whether they want to bring them in for an interview.

tos can live in eternity perpetuity. It's an object of trauma and blackmail that does not disappear. Here are some points to consider before hitting that send button:

• It's one thing to send sexually explicit photos to an intimate partner that you TRUST. How solid is your relationship? Could that person manipulate or betray you if and when the relationship ends? To safeguard against this, send the photos through an app like snapchat where the photos disappear after five seconds. You have to be cautious though because that person can take a screen shot and save it.

When female respondents were interviewed it was discovered that sexting coercion was more traumatic to them than verbal abuse or physical violence. We have to remember that nude pho-

• Could this prove to be and embarrassment to you in the future? This can follow you through the rest of your college career, work, and future relationships. Remember Anthony Weiner the NY congressman who was caught sexting to younger women? It ruined his political career. • Is it worth it to potentially set yourself up for bullying or humiliation?

• You could potentially invite stalkers or sexual predators into your bedroom. This can place you in a fearful situation that presents undue stress or harm.

What should you do if someone is trying to coerce you into sending a nude photo? Before you respond, take a moment, sit back and think it through. Will this change my life and reputation? Is this truly how I want to present myself? Employ your strongest sense of self-respect and self- esteem. If a person asks for a photo that you don't want to send, you have some options. You can ignore the request, or you can text or type back, "No, I’m not into this, or comfortable with it." Hold your ground! Another option is to send a photo of yourself fully clothed. The person on the receiving end might write back asking for more. You simply write back, "I just did!"

Sexting can lead to bullying. A friend's daughter had a friend who saw some messages on her phone that were of a sexually explicit nature. She told everyone about them and threatened to make copies and hang them around the school. It was very traumatic for her daughter and created a lot of stress for their family.

Twenty percent of those who sext say they have been coerced into sending sexually explicit messages through manipulation or threats. This presents trauma for the person who has been forced to send the message and can be viewed as another form of partner violence. A study from Indiana University showed that those who were coerced into sexting experienced more trauma than those who were coerced into physical sex. Many surveyed experienced anxiety and depression. Over the years, numerous suicides have been connected to nude images gone viral.

who had aspirations of going on to the NFL was charged with four counts of transmission of material harmful to minors and one count of violating Florida's Computer Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act. He was communicating with and sending photos of his penis to what he thought was a 14-year-old girl. The girl was actually a federal agent. Everything he has worked for is now uncertain as the court hearings and sentencing determine his future.

• How old is the person is you are exchanging photos with? Do you know? Some lie about their age and look a lot older than they actually are. It’s illegal to sext with a minor. I know of a student who was read his rights after he forwarded a nude photo of a minor that was sent to him. Sexting with a minor can set you up with criminal charges and an online record.

• Several weeks ago a Division I football player

The Internet has opened us up to a world where we have to tread very carefully. Once something goes up there you can't take it back. Don’t humiliate yourself, or set yourself up for a life altering event. Be careful and save the nudity for the bedroom or for someone you truly trust. I Do. I Don’t, I Do, I Don’t. I’d Do It Again.

in-law, and you would be your child’s father and uncle, and how confusing would that be?) But I was shocked to learn our government has a history of imposing downright shameful laws on who could marry whom until fairly recently. In Alabama, Arkansas, and Oklahoma it was illegal for blacks to marry whites. In Mississippi and Missouri it was illegal for blacks and Asians to marry whites. In North Carolina it was illegal for blacks and Native Americans to marry whites. In Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia it was illegal for all non-whites to marry whites. These “miscegenation laws” lasted from 1691 until they were overturned by Loving v Virginia in 1967.

Somewhere around AD 270, the Roman priest we now know as Saint Valentine was clubbed and beheaded by Emperor Claudius II for aiding Christians, so… now every February 14th I have to buy my girlfriend red underwear? Decapitation = crimson lace… really?

This makes as much sense as associating Easter with a bunny or Christmas with a fat man in a red suit, which is to say, no sense at all. The word “holiday” stems from the words “holy day,” since the term traditionally applied to a date commemorating a significant religious event. But humans have a tendency to replace thoughts of the Lord with those of cash reward: Americans annually spend more than 200 billion dollars on Christmas gifts, the amount of Peeps eaten at Easter could more than circle the Earth’s circumference, and in the US alone, over one billion dollars worth of Valentine’s cards are sold each year. But I just read some people are putting religion back into Valentine’s Day; since the start of this millennium there have been annual violent clashes every February 14th in India between shopkeepers who stock Valentine related items and Hindu fundamentalists who protest the holiday by burning cards and attacking couples found celebrating their love. Violence over love for religious reasons… really?

When it comes to matters of the heart I am no different than most men: totally confused. I believe women are just born knowing what romance truly is, whereas most men, well, we just have to guess. Which is why I decided to do some research into the word that often strikes fear in the hearts of even the strongest of men: “marriage” (because for some men marriage is not a word, but a sentence).

Let me start by saying I am no stranger to being pelted with rice. I have been married 1.1 times (my second marriage was so brief we had cake leftover). Let me also add that I liked being married. And I loved being engaged; that’s like putting a woman on layaway: “I like the way she looks on me, I don’t want anyone else to have her, but, I just can’t afford her right now.”

Hope the above attempt at humor did not offend any women; you seem to take marriage really very seriously. I believe that most women are as fascinated with marriage as most men are with porn (and who can deny both are better than being alone, except with marriage, men can’t fast forward through the parts where they’re just talking). Women have wedding showers; men have stag parties with stag films.

The circulation for Hustler magazine is almost identical as Brides magazine. But if fascination is to be measured by dollar signs there is no contest; the porn industry generates only 10 billion a year while the wedding industry rakes in a whopping 25.3 billion.

One of the surprises in my wedding research was discovering that throughout most of recorded history marriage had little to do with romance at all (just like porn). Before the 12th Century, the institution was primarily a business arrangement merging two families, the impetus was getting in-laws and managing property; courtship, love, sex or even simple affection was not considered a necessity. Most marriages were arranged with those involved having little to no say in the matter (I am familiar with this phenomenon; in my first attempt at marital bliss my plans for a long engagement were derailed by an anxious bride and an intrusive mother-in-law and in mere weeks I found myself flying down the aisle like a runaway train). The common people of 14th Century Europe could not even choose their spouse; that was a privilege reserved for the lord of the manor; if a peasant wanted to pick a partner he had to pay a fee, thus the birth of wedding industry profits.

In 1563, the Council of Trent decreed that marriages require the presence of a priest and at least two witnesses. In 1753, Lord Hardwicke's Act instituted the requirement of the performance of a religious ceremony. In 1754, England required issuance of a government license for a marriage to be valid. So in just over two centuries marriage evolved from a union either between man and woman, their families, their church, their government, to all of the above.

The government’s position on marriage has become a hot political issue of late, with many believing it influenced the outcome of the presidential election of 2004. Naturally there are some restrictions everyone agrees with, such as brothers and sisters should not marry (then your mother would also be your mother-

1967? That recently… really? I wonder if 43 years from now, people will look at the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act with the same appall? (I don’t understand all the fuss about same-sex marriage; my first wife and I had the damn same sex for seven damn years.) Government restrictions have certainly not damaged the popularity of marriage. For the past 20 years the US has averaged 2.25-2.4 million marriages a year, that’s over 6,000 weddings a day. Most of them will follow traditions established hundreds of years ago by a handful of the rich and powerful.

In 1840, Queen Victoria wed Price Albert wearing a white dress, establishing it as the bridal color of choice. Women now spend on average over $1,500 for their wedding dress; men get to rent a tux at an average cost of $197.

$1,500 versus $197… really? Perhaps we should bring back the tradition of dowries to even things out. In 1477, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond ring, establishing a tradition that now costs men three months salary. (If Max wasn’t already dead I would kill him.) The ring is worn on the forth finger of the left hand because ancient Egyptians believed a “vein of love” ran from that finger to the heart. (Doesn’t “vein of love” sound like a good title for an adult film?) The rings round shape is a symbol of eternity, thus a union that would last forever. Eternity… really? My wedding ring didn’t even last throughout my marriage; I lost it in a bar, but it wasn’t my fault. I had a hole in my pocket. Once again I hope the above attempt at humor did not offend any women. For what it’s worth, I welcome another attempt at marital bliss. My bachelor buddies give me grief about wanting to get married again. They ask “Why buy the cow if you’re getting the milk for free?” I suppose I’m just getting tired of drinking out of some other guy’s glass.

While Xclusive is an act that can certainly fit into the Small Venue category, this is also an act that is as big as life and twice as bold. A one-man variety hour, Kenneth “Xclusive” Paryo has taken his many talents from the screen of “America’s Got Talent” to the stage of college campuses across the nation. Anyone who has seen this talent knows it is one of the most unique acts ever to grace the campus stage. “My show consists of piano, live music remixes, standup comedy and dance. There are three distinctive segments of music, comedy and dance, that my show is broken into. They all have something to do with each other, but everything is comedically based. My goal at the end of the day is to make sure my audiences have a great time, and one sure way to do that is to make sure they are laughing.” Like many natural performers, Ken has been at this a long time. “I started with piano, my parents had me taking classical lessons when I was 8, so I have been playing piano for almost 20 years now. When I was 13, I made the choice myself to start dancing,” he says. “It wasn’t until I got into the college market that I started

doing standup comedy. That was about five years ago.” Five years has gone by in the blink of an eye, and Ken is excited to be at such a significant road marker in his career. “Five years is a big milestone, and I am proud that I’ve made it.”

“This is my first major award. When I got into the market, I never even considered the possibility of future awards for excellence. I am honestly honored and thankful and I know this is only just the beginning. I feel the sky is the limit now! I definitely did not feel entitled to this award and it took a lot of hard work, not to mention that I was nominated with some other great artists. It was certainly a validation to me. It took me by surprise, but when I saw the nomination, it felt like a confirmation that I have been headed in the right direction and has inspired me to redouble my efforts and become the best act in this market I can possibly be.” Metropolis Management at 877-536-5374 or joyce@metropolismanagement.com.

Sex Signals is a two-person, interactive play about gender stereotypes, myths surrounding sexual assault, consent and bystander intervention. “It’s a show about how we can all contribute to a world where we treat each other better and respect each other on equal levels across genders and cultures,” says Ben Murrie, the program’s Contract & Client Relations Director. The campus market is where the program grew its roots, and continues to be a major focus. “The campus market is a big one for us,” Ben says, “and that includes everything from very small community colleges to large state schools to the ivy leagues to conservative and religious institutions. The program runs the entire gamut of the college and university market. We also present for the military a lot as well. Sex Signals goes to every soldier entering basic training for the Army; we also do a training for the U.S. Navy and their initial entry training. The Marines and Air Force have received Sex Signals as well ” The tone of this show has been carefully crafted, as obviously the topical matter of Sex Signals consists of conversations many students have never openly had. “It is really difficult, because a lot of times, depending on the school system or home environment the students have come from, we are the first open conversation about sex these students have ever had. It’s unfortunate this is the case but that is the reality of it, so we try and approach it from a perspective of meeting them where they are at. We are most often called in for orientations and new student programs, so we say ‘Hey, college is a new and exciting experience, and there are all sorts of new things

here, like learning and growth opportunities, both academic and socially. One of the things that is going to be on your mind is interacting from a dating perspective. There are some wonderful things about that and there are some confusing things about that and sometimes there are some dangerous things about that. We want to talk to them about how those confusing things can ultimately lead to danger if we are not checking them and making sure we are in the right place in terms of paying attention to what other people and your partner want and respecting boundaries.” One part of the presentation that has gained the most traction recently is the aspect of bystander intervention and how important it is in the reduction of sexual assaults and specifically date rapes on campus. “Students have to look out for each other. This is a new community that they are joining and it is important that they participate and watch each other’s backs.” Christian Murphy, CEO of Catharsis Productions, is also co-creator of the program and was the first main male presenter. He summarizes perhaps the key element that has made Sex Signals the success it has on campus. “We try to talk WITH our audiences, as opposed to AT them. Some might consider that an unconventional way to have a conversation about sexual assault, but we have found the interactivity of having the audience involved in the conversation has made the message resonate incredibly well with them.” Catharsis Productions at 312-243-0022 or info@catharsisproductions.com

Daniel Martin has continued to be the undisputed highest rated performer in our Artist Report Cards system for the last 2 years running. There are droves of entertainers floating around using the title ‘comedy magician.’ Few of them can truly claim to be great at both. Daniel is getting equal parts laughs and gasps per minute in his performance. Not only is his show hilarious and amazing, but perfect for the campus market because just about every element of it involves the audience in some way. “When you see my show, you are getting an amazing infusion of a standup performer and a top shelf magician doing magic that you’ve never seen before. This is material that people have not only never seen in the college market, but no one else in the world is performing the effect that I am, because I have spent years crafting them myself.”

Dan is such a prolific mind in magic that he’s actually got two completely different shows he can perform, so many schools have taken advantage of multiple appearances in a year. With a nearly 90% rebooking rate, it’s little wonder he’s had to continue to innovate and produce new material to meet the return

client demand.“It really is as funny as it is impressive and it kind of breaks the mold from the typical comedy magician because the audience is so much a part of it. They kind of come on a journey with me and are intimately involved in the success or failure of the illusions themselves. They are not the brunt of the jokes, but they provide the material. They help me make people disappear and turn invisible, read minds and generally have a good time, all based around not me but their peers.” The core of Daniel’s show is the audiences, augmented by a really fantastic performer. “I think a lot of performers fall into the trap of trying to build their personal character up to the point where the show is all about them. I want my show to be about the audience. I want them to remember how they felt. Years from now I don’t want them to say ‘I saw cool magician.’ I want them to remember how they laughed and bonded with their peers.” Bass-Schuler Entertainment • (773) 481-2600 or info@bass-schuler.com

It’s been several years since we saw Natalie Stovall as Entertainer of The Year, and she’s back as Best Female Performer as well as Best Music Artist.

Natalie Stovall and The Drive are one of the hottest acts on campus, and with their blend of classic and contemporary covers combined with great original music, it’s not hard to see why. “Much of our show has derived from the fact that we have been on the road for 8+ years playing 200 shows a year. We are in front of crowds who don’t know who we are. So much of our show came from putting together a performance that would span across the many demographics. We are a country act at heart, but we all have many different influences. I have always personally leaned a little bit more on the Rock N’ Roll side of things and so I think it is fun to play a broader spectrum than just straight up country music. We have

a very exciting up tempo show and we like to keep the energy up, the crowd rocking and having fun.” Covers include Metallica, Michael Jackson, Journey, Beyonce, The White Stripes and others. “When we play ‘The Devil Went Down To Georgia’, the devil’s part is ‘Enter Sandman’ by Metallica. We have a medley called Fiddlepallooza that starts with Led Zeppelin and AC/DC and finishes up with Lynyrd Skynyrd.” “The college market has been so good to us. It’s where we got our start and we wouldn’t be a band if it weren’t for this market. It has been such a blessing for us and we don’t ever intend on forgetting that and want to continue to give great shows to these audiences.” Degy Booking, Jeff Hyman: 217-359-4243, jeff@degy.com

Mitch Clark went to college to play golf....Yes, GOLF.

“I injured my hand during my freshman year and had to take time off. Then I went back too soon and made the situation worse simply because I was anxious to get back into the sport. I play pretty good golf now, but when I tried to get back involved, I sucked. But here is the real kicker, I had never played an instrument in my life. I had never sang. But the guy that recruited me for the golf program, was a musician and he led a worship program on campus for The Fellowship of Christian Athletes.” FCA was the biggest Christian organization on campus. “The golf recruiter was the advisor of the group and led the worship band. He gave me his old guitar and told me to take it home, learn how to play it and learn how to sing with it. It was tough but I kept with it.”

The next thing that happened was the Activities Board Advisor at Methodist College told Mitch that she thought he would be perfect for performing in the college market. Now, in just his second year, he already won Fastest Rising Star last year and has accelerated to tie Natalie Stovall For Best Music Artist this year.

"Starting this fall I will be hosting a new show called, As Seen on TV. This live music show will include a “writer’s round” style format, involving myself as the host, and two (surprise/varying) special guests from your favorite singing shows, NBC’s The Voice, and Fox’s American Idol. The special guests will change from show to show, but the talent will not. We will be playing covers, as well as some original music, and accompanying each other with harmonies and backup guitar or piano. Be a part of the first people to experience this awesome new show in the market! “I also currently have a dual show with an amazing Magician, Lee Terbosic (www.leeterbosic.com), called “Magic, Music, and Mayhem.” It is a comedy, music, and magic packed show with lots of audience involvement, blown minds, and your favorite tunes played live along with it. Mat Franco is no stranger to the pages of Campus Activities Magazine®. We got the scoop first-hand when he won America’s Got Talent and covered it in detail in the Back To School Issue in 2014. By the way, that complete story is available on our website by simply scrolling down to that issue on the issue bar. The interview took place only 3 days after his win.

To say he is the Fastest Rising Star is an exclamation of the buyers’ belief in his enthusiasm and his talents: “I am still young and still like to travel, so I definitely want to continue touring...Vegas is still another possibility. As much as I love Vegas. I am not sure this is where I want to hang my hat, but we will see what is in the cards. At that point in his career, he probably feels more like Dorothy in the eye of the twister. Just before this interview in 2014, he had just gotten off the phone with Terry Fator. In case you don’t know who Terry is, he first got national recognition performing on a showcase at IACEP, The International Association of Corporate Entertainment Producers: which CAM’s parent Company

helped found. Terry was performing before some of the nation’s most prestigious Corporate Entertainment buyers, and if I am not mistaken, I believe he was going for somewhere around $2500. Not long after that performance he was offered a room at one of Vegas’ most impressive casinos and a multi-million dollar contract. Terry is still one of the top draws in Vegas today. There are a lot of other acts who have come from the Cameo ranks. especially the campus market. To mention a couple, Recycled Percussion, who have been featured numerous times in both Campus Activities Magazine and American Entertainment Magazine have a headline casino option in Vegas ( and they also showcased at AEP) and of course there is Carrot Top, one of the campus market’s most celebrated acts during his tenure, who also performs in Vegas, So Mat is in some very good company. A four-man improv comedy troupe, MI formed in 1999 around six key people who were themselves then college students. One of them was Aaron Krebs, who is still at the helm of the project.

Originally formed out of UMASS Amherst, “We were all buddies and moved to Chicago together to do the short-form college-style improv show we had been performing. It was fast-paced, fun and it was a little bit different from your traditional improv show in that it was simply six buddies making fun of each other. It’s more like an internal roast that the audiences gets to jump in on,” Aaron relates. The show officially started in 2000 at the Orlando Fringe Festival. “We never looked back,” he says. “It was very well-received and a friend of ours who saw it knew these two guys who had just started their own agency, Chris Schuler and Scott Bass. It became clear right away that we were a great fit for the college market. The second semester we were with Bass/Schuler Entertainment we did a showcase and it just exploded. By 2002 we were doing 200 dates a year.”

Aaron realized that if the show was going to maintain its presence, periodic overhauls were necessary. “As the years progressed, the touring cast rotated and we have been able to keep the cast of MI fresh, young and in tune with the campus cultures of their time. Even musical acts take a break for a while, but we seemed to never find a gap in the demand and plowed through hundreds and hundreds of shows on the road together. Toward the end of that original cast run, we probably looked more like crazed postal workers than comedians.”A rewarding aspect for the original cast in coming off the road was the opportunity it afforded their replacements. “There are not a lot of jobs in the improv community and the idea of being able to create jobs for performers was and continues to be very attractive to us. We all wanted to move on to Los Angeles to pursue dreams, and we have. Except there have also been just under 50 young performers since then who have had the opportunity to tour with our campus market road company and pursue theirs as well.” Contact: Bass/Schuler Entertainment at (773) 481-2600 or chris@bass-schuler.com.

Making her first national television appearance on the fifth season of “Last Comic Standing,” Amy was a face recognizable to devout fans of comedy or that show, but would not be widely recognized until years later.

Now, she’s the star of her own Comedy Central series “Inside Amy Schumer,” which has made her a recognizable face everywhere she goes. Going back almost 10 years, we find Amy starting off as a budding comic in New York, when she first hit the stage June 1, 2004. Many people think the national exposure she gained when she placed fourth on the fifth season of “Last Comic Standing” in the summer of 2007 was her first big break, when in fact she had been making a name for herself around Gotham Comedy Club and the New York scene, even having her own half hour “Live at Gotham” episode. She considers this her “big break” but also makes it clear that the mass exposure of being on prime time network

TV sure got a lot more people knowing her name.

Amy says performing in the college market made a major difference too. “Colleges have been a big part of what’s helped me succeed and move along in stand-up. It’s a great place to work on material and just get better. I am really interested in seeing what would work at comedy clubs and in other venues, but especially colleges. It’s a great way of measuring how funny a joke is. College students are still young and excited by life, they haven’t become jaded yet; I especially love orientation shows.” Amy is not what you would call a “clean” comic, with her material being well suited for a young adult crowd or Comedy Central, but maybe not so much for the major networks. -Augustana College, according to the agencies and artists who read our magazine and work in the campus market, is the Reader’s Choice Awards winner for Best Campus Program Board of 2016.

Located in Rock Island, Illinois, Augustana is a private liberal arts college of about 2,500 undergraduates situated in the quad cities region of Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline and Rock Island, Illinois. Ken Brill, AC’s Director of Student Life and Leadership and several of its student board members join us to talk about the programming there. “We are a pretty motivated campus,” says student Charlie Bentley. “We have a lot of different majors, some of our more popular ones include biology, business, music and communications. We are about 60 percent female and 40 percent male.”

For a fairly small campus, the programming participation on campus is very robust. Paige Pierson tells us, “Our Office of Student Life is made up of two programing boards: The Multicultural Programming Board and the Student Life Programming Board are made up of a total of 18 committees, each of which are composed of 2-3 student leaders. The Multicultural Programming Board has 12 executive board members and the Student Life Programming Board has 28 executive board members. Each of those committees is supported by committee members, all of whom are volunteer student leaders.

We do about 280 programs a year, or about 8 a week when school is in session.”

With such a high involvement in the programming culture, those spots on the boards are highly coveted. “For the Student Life Programming Board alone,” Ken says, “we actually had 70 people apply for 7 open positions. We are not in what most would call a major market, but the Quad Cities area does have 350,000 people and it’s not as if there is nothing to do in the area off-campus.” Ken says with adaptations, the board has been able to work nicely around local happenings and still keep student involvement high on-campus. “We have stopped putting on major concerts, for one thing. There is so much in that area going on in this market it provides a high-risk competition we avoid. With talent and production costs running a lot higher for major events, we have found our events are more affordable and fun for us and the students.” There are quite a few options for students to choose from, as Megan Meyer tells us. “For different groups we have a lot of options depending on taste. We have a comedy club, we have a coffee house venue, we feature spoken word artists, smaller music acts, magicians, hypnotists, etc. We are also pretty motivated on campus by current events so there is always a high level of interest in speakers, personalities and movements that are happening in the news. We

20, READER’S CHOICE AWARDS ISSUE: 2016, Campus Activities Magazine® • campusactivitiesmagazine.com

also have movies that play every Wednesday and Friday, titles that are not out on DVD yet.”

Ken is a guiding force that helps implement the students’ decisions, but the decisions themselves are left to the students. “The events calendar here is always very in-tune with what they want, because representative students are the people on the board, and those representatives are always keeping an ear to the ground,” Ken says.

“Two successful late night events this year were the paint party and the foam party. The students had an absolute blast at those and those kind of things are just not offered in the wider community.”

Cassidy Fauser explains, “Live On Campus presents our coffeehouse programs, but the Multicultural Programming Board does four special events each year as well that feature music acts. These are usually our bigger events that are held outside or in an auditorium .”

“We find the best way to get as many students as possible to attend our events is to have them and their friends as the features. Open mic nights for comedy and poetry always are very popular and well attended. Even when we hire nationally touring performers, we can often take the budget that would normally provide for only an hour of feature entertainment and stretch it into a real event by using our

top student talents as openers for the main professional act.”

Everything old becomes new again, so it should come as no surprise that here, just as on many other campuses across the country, BINGO has now become all the rage with the hippest young people in our culture. “It is an amazing draw.” Ken says, “It probably doesn’t hurt that there is a $500 cash prize up for grabs as well. All of our student events are free, and that keeps an entire night of student community fun in a more affordable price production range.” Well, there you have it. We have gotten to the core, boiled it down. Apparently the secret to becoming the Campus Activities Magazine Reader’s Choice Award winner for Best Campus Program Board of the Year comes down to a formula as simple as BINGO.

Joking aside, clearly the students and staff at Augustana do a fantastic job of keeping a very active schedule packed, keeping students interested, and knowing how to run it all in a professional manner while making artists feel at home in their venues. Bass/Schuler Entertainment has won the Campus Activities Magazine Reader’s Choice Award for Agency Of The Year so many times it’s tempting to just run one of the previous stories here and call it a day. But, out of a sense of duty, we decided to drag Chris Schuler out of his top secret agent’s bat-cave for one more Oscar-worthy acceptance speech.Ok, that may be overstating things , but the agency remains incredibly dedicated and grateful to the market it serves.

The campus market is not known for the longevity of its agencies as a general rule. It’s pretty common to see one open up shop and close or move on within a few years, but BSE has managed to stay at the pinnacle of college entertainment for almost 20. “Scott Bass and I formed the agency in 1999 and the makeup of the office has remained pretty consistent since then,” says Chris Schuler, co-owner and the agent responsible for the agency’s clients on the Eastern seaboard. “Scott handles the Midwest, I am on the East Coast and Drew Korb works with the West Coast and some central states. There are some edges that bleed together, but we feel that three agents give us a good coverage to stay in communication with all of our clients.” Chris explains that BSE has managed to strike an ideal balance. “I think our level of success has been due to the fact that we don’t just have one key agent trying to manage and maintain relationships with thousands of schools. For any agency there is a balance point about

the reasonable expectation of coverage one agent can handle so they aren’t so overwhelmed they are losing communication with schools and aren’t able to keep up. At the same time there is a trap in being so ambitious that an agency has too many agents and each one has such a small number of clients that the schools end up feeling hounded. It’s not the agents’ fault if they have too few accounts to adequately support themselves. They end up circling around those same few schools to try and generate revenue, but in reality I think that is counterproductive after a time because the schools are feeling a bit bombarded. Scott and I have always felt that three is the magic number.” Chris says that much like the folks in the background that are so vital to an event’s production at a school going off well, the unsung heroes in the office are vital to any successful agent’s work. “Our office staff can’t be underestimated,” he says, “and it was a very intentional focus of ours to make sure that we had one person in every chair and not have anyone spread too thin. We were very lucky to find a few great people early on in our journey that have been with us for years. Quentin Egan is our director of marketing and handles our website design, email marketing and social media. Rachel Wolfson has been with us for over 10 years as the liaison for contracts for schools that have questions about paperwork, as well as with the artists and the magazine. Sharon oversees all of our accounting,

22, READER’S CHOICE AWARDS ISSUE: 2016, Campus Activities Magazine® • campusactivitiesmagazine.com

working directly with the artists and making sure they get paid. We also always have two interns working with us who provide the true legs for the operation. And we can never forget about Mia Bass, the point person in our office. Scott and I rely on her heavily to make sure all of the cogs are turning on the administrative side of things. She oversees the office staff and her input and feedback are valuable on a lot of levels. She is the one that makes Scott and I look smart (laughs), as best she can. That’s a real challenge sometimes.”

A lack of infrastructure is certainly a reason many small or “boutique” agencies fail eventually, and seems to be a key reason Bass/Schuler Entertainment has not only managed to survive for almost 20 years, but has been Reader’s Choice Awards Agency of The Year for 8 of those (with another 4 they had to sit out the nomination since CAM enacted the rule a few years ago that no act or agency can win for two consecutive years). “Scott and I tried to make sure that when we started we built a team around us, creating an office that allowed each person to be able to handle their responsibilities adequately and not wearing too many hats.” Perhaps another reason some college agencies fade from view isn’t because they die, but simply move on to (seemingly) greener pastures. The allure of big corporate money or headlining multi-thousand seat events centers is alluring, but there is also something to be said for dancing with the one who brought you. BSE realizes they have created a niche in the college

market and do it really well. “There is a saying along the lines of ‘I’d rather be simple good than fancy bad,’” Chris says. “From the beginning the business plan of BSE was to be a college agency. That was our focus and has continued to be. Our goal was to be the best college agency in the market and not try to be anything beyond that. We rarely middle dates even in this market, because we feel that there are other people that are better at it because that is all they do. Our focus has always been to make sure that the acts who have hired us to represent them get the attention and recognition they deserve. Our goal is to make sure that every school is to be aware of the roster that we represent and gives it full consideration when they are deciding on what types of entertainment they want to pick. Our relationships with the schools have built a level of trust, because I feel we have created a very strong roster of artists that will always exceed expectations. If an artist goes in and does well, it bodes well for everyone. They come back to the agency, which benefits the roster as a whole. Any performer that is walking into a school is more than likely following in the footsteps of another performer that has been there ahead of them from BSE and did a great job. That is how we keep the doors open and continue to try and be the best college agency in the business.” Bass/Schuler handily won their EIGHTH win for Agency of the Year. When it comes down to true grit, determination and remaining honorable in defeat, no performer has plowed a harder road to the coveted Reader’s Choice Award for Entertainer of The Year than Sailesh Jaiwan. This is his seventh year in the RCA’s and although he has pulled down numerous wins for other categories like Best Male Performer, he has only been able to get within striking distance of the big win. Last year he was runner-up, edged out by only 2 votes; the year before was the same except the margin was 4. “This is my Oscar,” he says. “This is the award I have had my eye set on through four nominations. I was starting to think it was going to be my great white whale,” he says laughing.

Sailesh is a stage hypnotist of the highest order. Performing for 22 years, in 19 countries with over 5,000 total shows, he began his career quite by accident. “I always joke around that the majority of hypnotists are failed magicians,” he laughs, as a good-natured way to gently rib other hypnotists. “I actually started off as an opening act for a hypnotist as a comedian. I was also his road manager, so I was responsible for all of his travel, show setup and, coming up with new skits. When I walked away from him I had never performed a hypnosis stage show and never planned on it, but had gained the skills to do so. I was managing a bar some time later and did it for fun with the staff there. It ended up being the beginning of a long road. I came up with a show to make a little bit of extra money and after performing the same show for 73 Sundays in a row, other people had heard about me. The next thing I knew I was making more money being a stage hypnotist than I was doing anything else and my career had been launched.” Sailesh is widely regarded as one of the best hypnotists in the college market, and

consistently tries to evolve his show to stay in the class of “often imitated, never duplicated.” One unique aspect of his show is that it can be configured and formatted to various audiences, this is not a onesize-fits-all performance. “I can customize my show to fit formats from G to PG to R to completely uncensored, depending on the preferences of the school that night. I do a lot of research and consulting with the venues to make sure they are going to get exactly what they want and expect.”

The show is very fast-paced, high energy and exciting. “There is music throughout the entire show, which I use to bring up and down the energy level as we progress through it. It’s something that is constantly tweaked and updated so that I know students will always recognize the musical scores and be more comfortable with the environment. I keep up with things in the campus culture and adapt to it and always try to keep the show in the ‘here and now’. Keeping the music updated is a big part of that, as is consistently creating new skits.”There is a longstanding tradition of hypnotists and magicians performing excellent, amazing shows until they are perfect. So perfect in fact that they are remiss to change anything. Fast-forward 15 years and this “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” attitude renders their shows very predictable and stale (see: “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”). This is especially true in stage hypnosis, where there seems to be a limited supply of different skits to enact, and the less imaginative performers either stick to the tried-andtrue routines, or they “borrow” material from their peers. Because of this, most artists are hesitant to describe their show in detail in print, but suffice to say Sailesh is one of the innovators. Just like keeping his

24, READER’S CHOICE AWARDS ISSUE: 2016, Campus Activities Magazine® • campusactivitiesmagazine.com

musical tracks fresh, he updates his show to remain with the times. “An example is the super hero craze that we have undergone in the last several years. So I work with that and the volunteers love getting to be their favorite hero, or to make up a completely new one. The crowd is just as excited because it is a topic they connect with and love.”

On the same token, when the new comes in, some of the old has to move out. “There are certain skits that just don’t work any more that were amazing back in the late 90’s and early 2000s, but new students don’t relate to the material. It’s easy for us performers or even advisors to forget how fast time goes by, but I have been performing long enough in this market now that I could potentially be performing for the children of students I saw at the beginning of my career. The material that entertained them so well revolves around topics that were out of the headlines by their time some of these students were even born. The Bill Clinton and Spice Girl bits just don’t hold any relevance for today’s students (laughs). Luckily, social networking has given performers of my generation a way to stay in touch with students and exactly what is trending for them.”

There is traditionally an inextricable link between talent and ego. It has become accepted fact that the most talented and successful entertainers often struggle with their own self importance. Sailesh is widely known as one of the most mellow, down-to-earth and easiest performers in the market to work with. Perhaps it stems from his perception that he is not automatically the most important person in the room when he performs. “The audiences are the stars of the show. I am a funny per-

son naturally; I have a good sense of humor. That gives me the ability to direct and guide the volunteers to a place that I know will generate a laugh, but the real laughs and memories of a show come from the volunteers once they receive instructions.”

“There is a lot of improv in the show. Even though I have a structure, there are always amazing things that happen throughout and I just let it flow and roll with it. It has been 22 years, and it is very gratifying to come back to many of the same venues year after year. I have been going to some of the same venues for 15 plus years. I have been able to create an amazing fan base. I often go perform orientation shows and it’s not uncommon for 200-400 extra students to show up and join the freshmen .” Sailesh is also a certified hypnotherapist, and works with students and others in the areas of focus, memory, sleep patterns, stress management and more. He even incorporates this into the booking aspect of his show, offering combinations of entertainment shows with daytime educational and motivational presentations. No one has worked harder to become Campus Activities Magazine’s Entertainer of the Year, and our hats are off to Sailesh for keeping after the dream years in a row, to reach the pinnacle of the campus market.
