The Big Weekend is always one of the most fun-packed events in the Cambridge calendar – it’s a three day extravaganza of fun, activities, music, food, stalls and entertainment, taking place right in the middle of the city on Parker’s Piece. This year’s Big Weekend, which is organised by Cambridge Live on behalf of the council, is from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 July. Friday’s entertainment starts from 6pm, with live music on the big stage from acts including Boney M and Dario G, and the evening ending with a bang in the form of a spectacular fireworks display. Saturday is the designated Family

Fun Day, with a host of activities and demonstrations for people of all ages, alongside market stalls, food and drink, and plenty more live music including from The Selecter. Visitors can also try their hand at a number of different sports in the Active Play Zone including bouldering, cycling, tennis football and table tennis. The final day of the Big Weekend sees the annual Cambridge Mela – a celebration (in the form of music, dancing, food and more) of the different Asian cultures which bring so much to the life of the city. There’s also a full line-up of world music acts playing live on the main stage.

Jazz and brass in the parks Across the summer you can also enjoy free jazz and brass music on some Sundays in our beautiful parks until September. Why not make an afternoon of it – grab a picnic and a blanket, and head down to listen to these performers:

Improving city centre travel – have your say on City Deal proposals Residents, workers and businesses in and around the city are being urged to help shape proposals to tackle congestion and improve travel in the centre. More than 206,000 vehicles enter and leave Cambridge each day leading to gridlock impacting on journey times, business and day-to-day life. Subject to approval, the Greater Cambridge City Deal will be taking its eight-point plan to tackle congestion out for public debate this summer. The proposals include: ● Better public transport ● Better cycling and walking facilities ● Peak-time congestion control points on some roads ● A ‘Workplace Parking Levy’

On-street parking controls such as residents’ parking near large workplaces ● Smart transport technology [see side panel] ● A better travel planning service for organisations, schools and individuals The City Deal is a partnership between Cambridge City Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership and the University of Cambridge. Its aim is to support economic growth, more jobs and quality of life across the city region by using Government funding to make it easier for people to travel around, find a home and for local employers to find workers with the right skills. ●

The congestion-busting package follows public consultation and will complement existing schemes to improve public transport, cycle and walking journeys on other key routes – promoting quick and seamless trips in, out and around the city. For full details about this and other City Deal transport plans visit gccitydeal.co.uk Smarter way of life for Smart City ‘Smart city’ innovations are set to change the way people live, work and travel in Cambridge and beyond. The City Deal is exploring how data and emerging technology can be connected and used to tackle travel and other city challenges to make people’s lives easier. Improved real time bus updates, better travel planning tools and digital screens for visitors are just some of the practical solutions that are being developed by the City Deal’s Smart Cambridge programme.

As you may have seen in previous issues of Cambridge Matters, the Local Plans for Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire are the documents that will help guide the growth of the city and surrounding area until 2031. The council initially submitted its plan to the government in 2014, and following a series of public hearings the government’s inspectors queried whether enough homes were being planned to meet local needs and whether the proposal to build the majority of homes in new towns and villages was sound. The city council and South Cambridgeshire District Council carried out more work address the inspectors’ concerns and put forward a series of modifications to the inspectors at the end on March. The next hearings with the government inspectors will take place during the summer and autumn.

Credit Unions – volunteer advisors needed Two local credit unions supported by the council are looking for volunteers to join them, in order to help more Cambridge residents benefit from the financial services they offer. As part of our Anti-Poverty Strategy, we recently expanded our support for the work of two credit unions in Cambridge – Eastern Savings & Loans, and Rainbow Savers. Credit unions are small, not-for-profit organisations owned and controlled by their members. They offer ways to help people save and plan their finances more effectively, as well as being a safer and in many cases, more affordable source of small loans. The expansion has seen new public access points for the credit unions introduced at venues around the city, where residents can drop in and speak to representatives from the credit unions. A new one-stop ‘Advice Hub’ has also recently opened at our Customer Service Centre in Mandela House. Here, residents can obtain free financial advice - as well as advice on areas like tax, benefits, housing, health and education – from organisations including the council, the credit unions and Citizens Advice. Currently, the credit unions are looking to recruit additional volunteers who would be able to give some time on a regular basis. Volunteers assist at their drop-in sessions in King’s Hedges, Trumpington, Romsey, East Chesterton, Abbey and Cherry

Hinton, by opening new membership accounts, distributing leaflets and raising awareness of the credit unions locally. Full training will be given. If you’d be interested in volunteering to help the credit unions help other people in the city, contact us using the details below.

New webpage on domestic abuse Have you, or has someone you know, been affected by domestic abuse? If so, the council has recently launched a new web page containing lots of useful advice and links to organisations that may be able to help. You can find the page on the council website at cambridge. gov.uk/domestic-abuse-advice – it contains links to organisations such as the Cambridgeshire Peterborough and Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Partnership, Cambridge Rape Crisis, Cambridge Women’s Aid, Men’s Advice Line and legal organisations including Resolution Cambridge and West Suffolk branch. The page also offers useful information on spotting the signs of domestic abuse or relationship abuse, and how the council’s Housing Advice Service can help. The page has been set up as part of our commitment to the White Ribbon Campaign, the movement led by men working to end male violence against women. Cambridge Matters

It’s never been easier to make your metal matter Do you remember the first item you ever recycled? Maybe not, but there’s a good chance it could have been a fizzy drink can or a baked bean tin. In the UK, we’ve been recycling these materials for many years now, and it’s just as well, as we use more than half a million tonnes of metal packaging in a year. Currently, we recycle an estimated 75% of steel packaging and 50% of aluminium packaging. That means there’s a lot of metal packaging that’s being recycled - but there is still a lot more that we could be doing. Aluminium and steel can be recycled over and over again, and it uses around 95% less energy to make products from recycled materials than it does using raw materials. Recycled cans can be turned into anything from a paperclip to a designer watch, a washing machine or even the hull of a ship. But how do we make sure we’re recycling all we can? Well, the good news is that you can recycle all your drinks cans, food tins, biscuit tins, aluminium foil and foil trays and

more at the kerbside in your blue bin. Just give them a quick rinse first, and if you want to save water you can rinse them in the left over washing up water after you do the dishes. Recycling metals helps the environment in significant ways. It can minimise the need for new raw materials, which helps save energy – just think about the energy needed to mine ore, extract the desired metals, and transport it for processing, versus collecting and melting down pure steel cans. In fact, if we recycle all the steel we use in a year, it would save enough energy to make over 50,000 return train journeys between London and Edinburgh. When it comes to recycling, metal is hard to beat. That’s because it’s 100% recyclable – every last bit can be turned into something new and it’s a cycle that can go on and on for years to come.

Foil – recyclable or not? Can foil be recycled or can’t it? To settle this one, do the scrunch test. Some packaging, such as crisp packets and pet food or drinks sachets, can look like aluminium foil, but looks can be deceiving, as some are metallised plastic film. To find out, scrunch the item in your hand. Does it remain scrunched? If so, it can be recycled. If it springs back, it can’t.

Have you got an old electrical item that has lost its spark? An estimated six million waste electrical and electronic items are thrown away in the UK every year, but almost all of them can be re-used or recycled. If you’re looking to clear out unwanted or

broken electrical items, you can bring them to one of two drop-off events we have organised with the county council for quick and easy disposal, and even have a chance of winning a £25 One4all voucher. The events are on Saturday 25 June at Newmarket Road Park and Ride and on Sunday 17 July at Trumpington Road Park and Ride, from 10am-3pm. If you can’t make it to either of these events, there are other options for recycling electricals: ● Repair Cafés bring together ‘fixers’ and people with broken items. Find out where your nearest one is at repaircafe.org; ● Working appliances can be donated to charity shops or social enterprises;

Recycling Centres near Milton or Thriplow accept all electricals for recycling; We can collect your items under our chargeable bulky waste collection service. Tip: Recycling batteries You can recycle batteries from your electricals by attaching them in a bag to the handle of your green bin. You should have received a battery bag with this issue – but if not, don’t worry, any small plastic bag will do!

Your neighbourhood needs you! Volunteers wanted to help keep Cambridge tidy Would you like to help make the streets and open spaces where you live cleaner and tidier? We’re looking for people to join our growing band of Streets and Open Spaces Volunteers who work closely with council officers on regular projects, aimed at improving the city’s neighbourhoods in a variety of ways. Volunteers can get involved with a number of different activities where they live, such as organising and taking part in litter picking, removing graffiti, encouraging dog owners to keep to the law, and taking part in small garden projects. If you have an idea for a project that could improve the streets and parks where you live or work, or would just like to get involved, why not get in touch? As well as doing something worthwhile, you’ll meet new people, learn some new skills and can

even earn Time Credits – the scheme which repays people for volunteering by giving them vouchers to spend in places like

cinemas, sports centres and music venues nationally and locally. ng

Rent your spare room – and help someone in need of a home Do you have a spare room in your house that might be suitable for a lodger in need of somewhere to live? Cambridge Supported Lodgings is a council service that provides homes specifically for people who need accommodation and are at risk of homelessness – which may be the result of a relationship breakdown, loss of employment or another reason. The service looks to provide homes for people for a limited period of time, to prevent their situation from worsening and to help them rebuild their lives. The aim of the service is to match suitable, well-vetted tenants, with friendly, welcoming hosts, into good quality houses. We can provide you with full training and all the support you might need, to make the arrangement work for you and your new lodger. Our team will carefully assess the people looking for somewhere to live. We create a personal action plan to help them manage their circumstances, and also work with you, advising on a wide range of potential issues such as property standards, rent collection, tax and benefits. Most importantly, we work hard to match you with a suitable lodger and ensure that the agreement – typically between three and nine months - is set up to succeed. Renting out a room can be a good way of earning extra money. Cambridge Supported Lodgings can help you negotiate a fair rent and work out the tax and benefits implications – including how to

14

take advantage of the Government’s Rent-a-Room scheme which lets you earn up to a threshold of £7500 per year tax free from letting out furnished accommodation in your house. However, the main benefit of renting out a room is the impact you’ll have on someone’s life – providing a safe, stable environment for someone who really needs it. spare-room

Never visited a community centre? We want your views We’re currently on a fact finding mission with local residents, groups and organisations as part of a review of community facilities across the city to find out what people think of our centres, what they use them for, and if they don’t use them – why not. Our findings will help us plan how we will provide the facilities that people in the city need in the years to come. Did you know that we operate five community centres across the city, which offer a wide range of facilities for use by local residents and groups? The five centres run by the council are: Meadows Community Centre in Arbury, Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre in King’s Hedges, Brown’s Field Youth and Community Centre in East Chesterton, Ross Street Community Centre in Romsey, and 82 Akeman Street Community Centre in Arbury. We’ve already gathered views from people ■

who use these centres, but we also want to hear from people who don’t use them. If you don’t go into any of the centres listed above we would like you tell us: 1. Why have you never been in? 2. Is there anything that makes it difficult for you to use the centres at the moment? 3. What might make you think about using the community centres in the future? e.g. more or better publicity about what goes on; additional or improved facilities etc. Please let us know which of the centres your comments relate to, if they are about specific ones. Please email your responses to: jackie.hanson@cambridge.gov.uk or phone the number below. munity

More local employers sign up for Living Wage Several more local employers have signed up for the Living Wage Foundation’s national Living Wage campaign recently, with the help of the council. Local homeless charity WinterComfort’s Catering and Cleaning Services, food cooperative Daily Bread and the Regent Hotel in the city centre have all recently become officially accredited as Living Wage employers. This means that all their employees will earn at least £8.25 an hour, compared to the national minimum wage of £7.20 an hour for people over 25 which was introduced in April. The figure of £8.25 is set by the independent Living Wage Foundation to reflect the real cost of living. Local cleaners Trojan Commercial Cleaning have also recently become one of the first local companies named as a ‘Recognised Service Provider’ working with the Living Wage Foundation. This means they have pledged to pay all the employees based at

their head office at or above the Living Wage rate, and also to encourage clients to pay a Living Wage rate in more of their contracts. Although they may be unable to incorporate Living Wage rates in all the contracts they undertake, Trojan will always supply bids to prospective clients based on Living Wage rates, alongside ‘market rate’ proposals, in order to help publicise the benefits of the Living Wage more widely. There are now more than 40 employers in the Cambridge area officially accredited as Living Wage employers, including the city council. We have supported the Living Wage mean for you as an employer or employee, Foundation’s campaign since 2014 as part of contact our Living Wage Coordinator Theresa our ongoing Anti-Poverty Strategy, which Bateman using the details below. aims to tackle the continued high cost of living and working in Cambridge and dge.gov.uk/living-wage improve standards of living for people • Website: cambri@c bridge.gov.uk on lower incomes here. Introducing the Cambridgeshire Handyperson Service If you’re over 65, or a younger resident with a disability, you might be interested in a new service from Age UK and local councils – the Cambridgeshire Handyperson Service. The service aims to help people with small ‘odd jobs’ around the home, to ensure it continues to be safe and comfortable to live in. The kind of jobs that can be carried out include: ● Fixing taps ● Replacing fuses, light bulbs and plugs ● Moving furniture ● Small carpentry work ● Changing curtains ● Putting up shelves ● Fitting internal locks ● Renewing bathroom sealant Grab rails can also be provided and installed in your home free of charge, and key safes can be installed for £45 including the cost of the safe. If you have a small job that you think the Handyperson Service could help with, just give them a ring to tell them what you need. Then an Age UK assessor will visit

you in your own home to complete a Wellbeing and Home Check assessment. Any work carried out will cost £25 per hour plus the cost of the materials used and will be done by contractors approved by Age UK. The above list is not exhaustive, so if there are any other small jobs you might need doing, just get in touch with us and ask. ndyperson Service: • Cambridgeshire Ha team on Phone the Handyperson lpline on 0300 01480 700205 or the He 666 9860.

Get active with our exercise referral scheme Do you – or does someone you know – have a long term medical condition or disability? If so, you might be interested in our Exercise Referral Scheme, which offers specially tailored activity programmes for people who would find them beneficial. The scheme provides adults with a variety of carefully structured activities at various locations in the city. These include gym programmes and specialist classes such as: ● Water workouts ● Cardiac rehabilitation ● Cancer rehabilitation ● Disability-specific classes. If you are currently doing little or no activity and would like some professional advice the exercise referral team may be able to help. For more information just get in touch, or ask your GP or health professional to refer you. Free exercise referrals are currently available to patients registered to East Barnwell, Arbury Road and Nuffield Road surgeries.

Your one stop shop for building control If you have ever had work done on your home, you may have had contact with our Building Control service. The service provides advice and support to householders, builders, architects and the construction industry about safe working. The team are mostly out on site working to make sure that buildings across the city are safe. This can be new housing, large commercial developments, household extensions, and even calls to check on buildings that may be dangerous, such as after fire damage. Building Control services for Cambridge, South Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire are now being provided by one big team, under the banner of 3C Shared Services. The recent move to a single shared team means anyone who needs Building Control services across the three districts only needs to go to one place, we have the capacity to provide good cover for all areas at busy times, and are able to save money. If you are a resident, and are planning to make changes to the structure of your home, or if you have any concerns about building

safety – just get in touch. We can help make your building project quicker and easier by arranging consultations with our surveyors, ensure you comply with all • Website: cambridge.gov.uk/building-control regulations and Email: buildingcontrol@3Csharedservic giving you all the es.org advice you’ll need. Phone: 01223 457118. Building a better future through apprenticeships Have you ever considered a career in surveying? A career in building control surveying offers an interesting combination of time indoors studying and checking plans and calculations – with time outdoors inspecting work on site. A great deal of new development is expected in Cambridge in the coming years, so to help bridge the demand for skilled construction professionals, we are committed to developing our own staff, including through apprenticeships. Our latest apprentice, Jade, had already developed an interest in construction – including completing a BTEc at college – before joining us. We are supporting her with study time and mentoring to work towards a full surveying degree and her Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors qualification. Jade says: “Although no two days are the same, most of them involve getting muddy out on site. Getting out and about meeting lots of interesting people is something I really enjoy and I would certainly recommend a career in Building Control.” For more information about apprenticeships with the council, call 01223 458108.

Is your company looking to grow? One of the ways in which we support local businesses and organisations – and the city’s economy in general – is by offering a range of offices, industrial units and shops for rent. We own a variety of different commercial properties across the city, suitable for many types of company – ranging from small offices and light industrial units to city centre and neighbourhood retail premises, including within the new developments at Orchard Park, and Great Kneighton Virido from 2017 As well as providing local companies with affordable premises and a reliable landlord, our commercial properties also generate much-needed income for the council, which

18

can then be spent on services for the city’s residents. Among the commercial properties currently available in the city (as of 8 June) are: ● Offices at Barnwell House, off Barnwell Road, and at Orwell House, off Cowley Road; ● Light industrial unit at Robert Davies Court, off Nuffield Road. If you’re looking to start a business, are expanding your company, or are looking for premises to lease on flexible terms with a reputable landlord, why not take a • Website: cambridge.gov.uk/business-property look at the complete list of properties Email: proper ty.services@cambridge.gov.uk we currently have available around Phone: 01223 457447 the city?
