From the Headmaster Happy Chinese New Year! I would like to wish all our families a Happy Chinese New Year for Tuesday 5 February. Our Chinese Department have led us in a range of activities to celebrate the Year of the Pig. Our exchange students from China have been helping our students make Chinese lanterns and design posters to celebrate Chinese New Year and they will have dumplings with visiting students on 19 February to celebrate the end of Chinese New Year celebrations. They will also give presentations to various classes about Chinese New Year as well as their school life in China, our students are thoroughly enjoying this week’s activities.
Staff Departure I am very sad to announce that Ms Paulene Clarke, our Senior School counsellor, has decided to retire at the end of the Term after 35 years of excellent service at our School. Paulene has helped thousands of students to negotiate their way through school, and has proven to be a wonderful asset to students, parents and staff members. We will greatly miss her positive contribution to the School. We will also miss Molly, her “Assistant”, who has been much loved by students and staff. I have now commenced a search to find a suitable replacement for the important School Counsellor position.
Parents’ Association Start of Year Social Functions Tonight we will hold the Senior School Parents’ Association start of year function in The Camberwell Room in the Sports Centre. Thanks again to the Parents’ Association and to the Development Office for organising and hosting these functions. I have appreciated the opportunity to welcome parents from the various year groups of the School to a new School Year.
Exchange Students I would like to welcome twelve students from Xi’an Tie Yi High School, and their supervising teacher, Ms Shiyu Yao, who arrived earlier this week for a four-week exchange. Students have been paired with Year 9/10/11 Chinese language students and will follow their timetables. They will participate in classes and experience a range of different activities whilst also helping our boys with their Chinese.
Scholarship Examinations Tomorrow morning – 9 February – we will be holding scholarship examinations at School. Some three hundred students have registered for these examinations including some of our own students. We wish them all well, recognising that only a very few candidates will be awarded a scholarship, and that examination results do not define one’s worth as a person.

VCE Season of Excellence 2019 I am delighted to inform you that Finnegan Sampson and Will Woods (Year 12, 2018) will perform their work from 2018 in this year’s Top Class Theatre Studies program as part of the VCE Season of Excellence 2019 at the Playhouse, Art Centre Melbourne in March. I am also delighted to announce that Hugh Williamson (Year 12, 2018) has been selected for this year’s Top Arts Exhibition for his two-layered posters. Top Arts presents diverse and accomplished works of art from students who have completed Art or Studio Arts as part of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in 2018.

Towards2050 I am excited to announce another initiative from the School’s sustainability group, Towards2050: Clothing and E-waste bins in the Highton Car Park. Old clothes can be placed in the yellow bin, while anything that has a circuit board can be placed in the maroon e-waste bin. Toys, old gadgets (complete with power cords and charging stations can be placed in the bin. However, it is imperative to note that we can only accept things that fit in the bins. If you have something which is too large for the opening, I am sorry to say we cannot take it. Furthermore, a reminder that we have mobile phone recycling in the Weickhardt Library. Middle School Settling In Well done on getting through the first full week! I’m sure it was good to get into more of a routine. New boys (and staff) are starting to find their way around the school, although it will take some time to become more settled. A Middle School Handbook will be distributed to families by email, as we finalise the New Parent Portal.
Meet the Form Teacher Many thanks to parents and staff who made themselves available on Wednesday night for the meet and greet sessions. It is always good to know what motivates your boys, so that we are in a better position to partner in their learning. I encourage strong communication lines between the parents and Form Teachers throughout the year.
Year 8 Surf Camp Perfect conditions greeted our Year 8 boys as they ventured to Torquay, Anglesea and Ocean Grove for the Annual Surf Camp. The camp proved to be an extremely positive bonding experience for all involved and I congratulate the boys on the enthusiasm and courage they demonstrated. It was clear that we had a mix of boys trying surfing for the first time, with several others well accustomed to the breaks in the area. Regardless of their experience, it was great to see the boys helping their mates. Many managed to stand up on surfboards for the first time and the educational sessions around water safety were most valuable. Thursday night was filled with the infamous ‘Ga Ga’ Ball, soccer, card games and guitar solos. Many thanks to Mr Thomas for organising an excellent few days and to the Year 8 Form Teachers and accompanying staff who spent the time away from their own families to be with the boys.
Homework Club The Homework Club will recommence next week in A21 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Boys are encouraged to come along to these sessions to receive support from Mr Scott Wyatt and Mrs Ciara Chaomhanach in subject specific-areas, as well as guidance in time management and study skills.

Curriculum and Wellbeing Information Evening I am looking forward to seeing many of our parents next Tuesday at The Middle School Curriculum and Wellbeing Information Evening in the Middleton Theatre (behind the Performing Arts Centre), commencing at 7.00pm. Mr Scott Wyatt (Deputy Head of Middle School) hosts the evening, and will be presenting relevant information to all Middle School parents wanting to better understand the following topics: • Our curriculum • Assessment • Homework • Technology • Learning for the future • Caring for your son Teaching boys • • Communication and collaboration between parents and teachers The evening will conclude by approximately 9.00pm, with tea and coffee for those wishing to stay around and mingle.
Sport Update It will be terrific to kick off school sport tomorrow. We wish all our boys the very best, especially those on debut for CGS. Win, lose or draw - I hope all boys are proud of their effort and sportsmanship at the end of the day. Best of luck also to the Swim Team, competing at Mentone tonight.
Choir Practice Choir practice will begin next Tuesday (Period 1) for the Middle School. I encourage all boys to make a big effort, as the guidance they receive by our dedicated team at CGS will take them well beyond their expectations.

Junior School 2019 JUNIOR SCHOOL PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS Wednesday 20 February 3.40pm to 9.00pm Thursday 21 February 3.40pm to 6.00pm On these two evenings, there will be an opportunity for you to meet with your son’s classroom teacher, specialists and support staff. The purpose of this introductory interview is to provide an opportunity for you to meet your son’s teachers and to share important information about your son. As this is the first occasion new families have to meet with specialists we request, unless you are a new family to CGS Junior School or have a pressing issue to discuss, you do not book an interview with the specialists. You would have received an email this week explaining how parent/teacher interviews can be booked on-line from 2.00pm Monday 11 February, until 2:00pm Monday 18 February. These meetings are for parents only, if as a last resort you need to bring your Junior School boy or siblings, we request they are adequately supervised or quietly occupied outside classrooms during interview times. Please note, due to Government regulations boys who are not booked into Aftercare cannot join this group in outside play. As the Library is used for interviews, it is also unavailable. Parent Information Session 2019 Years 3-5 Mathematics: Core Numeracy Skills and Flexible Thinking Tuesday 26 February – 8.30am to 10.00am Wheelton Centre, Room 310 The session is an active hands-on workshop intended to give parents information about what is at the heart of Mathematics today. Namely the deeper processes of fluency, reasoning and justification and the capacity to think flexibly. Simply memorising content is no longer enough. Anaphylaxis Management
VCE Season of Excellence 2019
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction to a substance, most commonly nuts, egg, milk, wheat, soy, seafood, some insect stings and medications. Camberwell Grammar School is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment in which students diagnosed at risk of anaphylaxis can participate equally in all aspects of their school. The School has an “Anaphylaxis Management Policy” in place, which includes individual management plans for each student diagnosed at risk, and procedures to ensure that staff are trained and informed. Parents new to the school are asked to notify the school if their child has been diagnosed at risk of anaphylaxis in order for an individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan to be developed. While we are not a nut free school, we actively discourage the bringing of any nut products to school. Should this occur there is a protocol in place to ensure the product is consumed and rubbish disposed of well away from all other students. The Deputy Head of Junior School, Mrs Dianne Collins will contact the family and renew the request to avoid nut products being sent to School.

Sport First Weekend of Sport It was great to see Camberwell students back in action last weekend. Thankfully, the oppressive heat held off for the morning competitions. After their first week of training, the Year 7s are ready and enthusiastic to play in their first weekend of Sport for the first time.
Triathlon Series Last Sunday, the 4th race of the Triathlon series saw all competitors faced with warm conditions, flat seas and a slight breeze. Competing in the Junior Elite division, Jack Amling (Year 12) exited the swim leg in the latter part of the field of top class athletes, including part of the USA national squad. He rode strongly to ride 20km in just over 31 minutes and eventually finished in 9th place. In the sprint race, over 750m swim, 20km ride and 5km run, Charlie Harper (Year 12), Harry Swingler (Year 12) and Alex Lew (Year 10) all raced strongly in the 15-19 age group. Freddie Askew (Year 8) finished a mere 10 seconds behind Billy Swingler (Year 9), who both recorded excellent times in the mini race, which involved a race over 300m, 13km bike and a 3km run.

Victorian State Badminton Titles Otto Zhao (Year 10) competed in the Under 17 Victorian State Badminton Titles last weekend, where he was successful in winning the Singles and was crowned State Titleholder. An exceptional effort, as Otto is only 14 years old. New Year 9 Student, Connor Laird is currently representing Victoria Metro in the Under 15 National Cricket Championships, being held on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. We wish him all the best for the week long tournament.
Mouthguard Fittings On Friday 1 March at 9:30am, the School is holding mouthguard fittings in time for the Winter season. If you are interested in getting a fitted mouthguard for your son, please refer to the flyer attached to the Bulletin.
Sports Report After a long summer break, Camberwell sport resumed the season strongly, winning 37 out of 60 games on Saturday. Round 5 of the AGSV season saw the First XI Cricket team record a good win over Ivanhoe on Saturday to regain ‘The Allan Graham Cup’. After a strong start, with good pressure from bowlers Tom Graves (Year 12) and Ray Son (Year 12), Ivanhoe were 5/61 after 20 overs. Camberwell maintained the pressure all the way through the innings and after a brilliant 5 wicket haul from Vihaan Narayana (Year 12), Ivanhoe were bowled out for 121. Camberwell made the most of the time they had, passing the target patiently, with contributions from Josh Pollocks (Year 11) and Jordan McCleery (Year 10). CGS now have two must-win games against Marcellin and Yarra Valley to earn a spot in the finals. The 10A tennis team continued their run of form with a convincing win against Trinity. The boys showed great skill and application to guide themselves to victory with exceptional performances from Riley Smith (Year 10) and Zach Lewis (Year 10) both winning their doubles and singles matches. Nicholas Taranto and Thomas Georges both outclassed their opponents with Camberwell finishing with 9 sets, 66 games to 2 sets, 43 games. The First Volleyball team had a tough encounter against Trinity, losing the first two sets. However strong leadership from Christopher Kyriakos (Year 12) and Dominic Di Censo (Year 12) inspired the team to level the game two sets apiece. An outstanding team effort meant Camberwell took home the victory winning the game 3 sets to 2. Up against a tough Yarra Valley side, the 10C Crest basketball team had to fight hard to come out on top by the end of the game. Harry McColl (Year 10) and Harrison Kimmitt (Year 10) led the way with consistent shooting and pressure not letting Yarra Valley get on top. Sam Schwenk (Year 10) added an extra boost to the team in the 4th quarter to see the team win 43 to 29. Second Blue Basketball team hosted Assumption on Saturday to continue their dominant run of form of late. After a return from injury, Aksel Salins (Year 12) starred as he led the boys with tight defensive efforts and playmaking abilities. Camberwell remained in control of the game from start to finish, refusing any attempt of an Assumption comeback. There were crucial supporting acts from Daniel Bowers (Year 12) and Max Inglis (Year 12) who combined for 21 points, assisting Camberwell to get the win with ease. The 8A basketball team had an enthralling match against arch-rivals Ivanhoe. CGS started slowly as Ivanhoe were able to maximise on turnovers and score in transition ending the first half 20 points down. However, the team would not go down without a fight and thanks to outstanding performances by Harry Thomas (Year 8), Ed Lord (Year 8) and Adam Rizzo (Year 8), CGS were well and truly in the game with only a few minutes to go. Against all odds the boys were able to salvage a draw and come back from the impossible, leaving the team hungry for success this week. Tax File Number (TFN) Any student will need a tax file number when starting work and all students undertaking a tertiary education require one. Importantly, students cannot enrol in a CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place) course at university without a Tax File Number, so current Year 12s should get one now. You must apply for a TFN online and have your identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office. New Course Seeker website Course Seeker is an interactive, searchable website displaying course information, entry requirements, admission processes and student satisfaction survey results at the study area and institutional level Australia wide. The website is designed to help students make informed decisions about their future study by allowing them to access clear, meaningful and transparent information on ATARs, prerequisites and enrolment policies. VCE students are encouraged to spend some time browsing and familiarising themselves with Course Seeker.

CGS Auxiliary Annual General Meeting Wednesday 20 February, 9.00am (coffee from 8.30am) Development Office, Round Room. All are invited to attend. Cafeteria Volunteers The Auxiliary is urgently seeking assistance from parents who are available to volunteer 1-2 mornings per term to assist staff in the cafeteria. We ideally like to have two parent volunteers per day. The hours are from 9.30am to 1.00pm. It is a fun way to meet other parents and feel connected to the CGS community. There will be an induction held for new volunteers on Monday 11 February at 8.30am in the CGS cafeteria, however it is not a requirement that you attend this session to be able to volunteer.
